I just test drove a 2010 Hyundai Sonata with 156k on the odometer but it looks and drives like it's less than 30k.

Except for the transmission. I just got done researching comments on the 2009-2010 Sonata and the issues owners were having with their trannies suddenly downhshifting into 1st or 2nd gear (like "Hitting a cinder block" as they put it).

Not with this car. I have to imagine that for the prior owner to have put 156k on this car that whatever tranny issues existed with respect to the common complaints were corrected.

My problem is different, however. It doesn't seem like it's cycling through all five gears when going from a stop to highway speeds. Also, during the test drive, I stomped on the pedal at 40mph and again at 60 mph to simulate a passing maneuver and the tranny only downshifted from 5th to 4th.

Would a reflashing of the ECM and TCM eliminate this issue? Or, should I put an OBD II on it and see what code it throws (if any)? Thanks for your help.

Hi I have a Tucson CRDi 2L 2005 all wheel drive and I also have the same problem where my car will not engage into drive. It started with drive only and it can only engage in reverse now. Please advise on what the cause could be. Thanks

    Hi Steve,

I am looking to buy Mazda Cx-5 Touring or Toyota RAv4 XLE. Feeling Cx-5 is better. Can you please advise what is a good price to look for Cx-5 Touring . Zipcode 32246 Florida.

Hi Mike, Invoice is $25,400, MSRP is $26,115 and TMV for your zip is $24,173. All numbers include the $900 destination, no options, and TMV includes a $500 incentive.

So TMV is $1,200 off invoice. I think I'd aim for $23,500 for my lower end target - that's 10% off MSRP. The typical range is 8 to 12% off invoice. Getting some quotes first would give you an idea of what dealers are more aggressive.

The trick with Florida is high doc fees, usually $500 to $1,000. Any doc fee over $50 is too much and is just extra dealer profit.

Good luck and please let me know how it goes.

      Thanks Steve.Appreciate it.
What would be an approximate okay out of the door price for car price of $23500..That would give me an idea if dealers try to fool me with doc, tax, and other additional prices.

We say your taxes are 7.5% and DMV fees are around $180. Sometimes our fee chart is off, so you may want to double-check with DMV. (goo.gl/HoikK8)

I get $25,442 - throw in some doc fees and you'd wind up at $25,500.

Earl Stewart Toyota is a fun site to check out down in N. Palm Beach. He's a one-price shop so his prices are a bit high if you decide to compare his RAV4 numbers with the CX-5, but his blurb about doc fees is worth a read.

Thanks Steve for quick reply..I was out today with different car dealers.. Mazda didnt come below 27500.. They have 800 document fee + 650 dealer fee etc..
Checked out 2016 Honda CRV EXL and after negotiations, they came down to 27500 out of door. Wondering if it is a good deal. I am considering waiting for 2017 EXL as i really like Honda Sense features (adaptive cruise control, lane assist etc). Do you think I would be able to make a deal near the OTD price of 27-29k for new 2017 EXL in the first couple of months once it is in market. Like the CRV after my first test drive today and feels more comfortable than CX5.But really confused whether to go with 2016 model or wait couple of months for 2017. This i my first new car purchase and I would really appreciate your advise.
      Thanks once again.

We shopped a Civic Hatch last month and if we were going to get one, we'd wait for the Sense stuff too. The 2017 Hatch is out but not with that option package. I would wait because of those features, but I'm getting older and "need" them. :-)

TMV on the 2016 CR-V EX-L is right at $27,000. 10% off MSRP would get you down to $25,600.

My guess is that when the '17s arrive, you'll still be able to get a deal for around 8% off MSRP and that should be under $29k OTD. And if you can wait, you may be able to snag one of the few remaining 2016s if for some reason the 2017 prices are nuts. Your color choices will be slim though.

Not sure what to tell you about Florida doc fees other than to go buy in Virginia....

Thanks so much Steve. I will wait for couple of months to see how new crv price comes around. Hopefully 2017 models will come out by Jan end.

    Hi Michaell,
I live in NJ. Could you tell me what is the December MF and residual for a 36 months / 10k lease on a Subaru Outback 2,5i Touring with total MSRP of 38,880/- (ordered and waiting delivery in December '17)?
Kind of confused if the dealer outplay us at the delivery now... If my local dealer gave me MF = 0.0010 and Residual = 65% back in October when we ordered it for monthly payment of $340/- (total 1600/- total out incl all taxes & fees), what will be the reduction or increase I should be negotiating at the delivery?
Again, this is in New Jersey.
I appreciate your proper guidance v much.
    Best, RCJ

    Hello Michael,
I have looked at the forums for the Audi Q5, BMW X5 and the Lexus Rx350/450 and all I see are questions on how to lease these cars, while I plan to buy one and keep it for 8-10yrs. Since you and a couple of others on the forum had helped me get a great deal on a 3 yr. lease on a 2015 Lexus RX 350 a year and a half back, I find myself turning to you once more for advice on how to go about negotiating a good deal on these cars. Where could I get information on the current discounts, invoice price, et al for these cars ?

    Appreciate your help and guidance.

    Warm regards
    Gautam
