Mazda 6 Hatchback - Your opinions?

According to articles I've read, Mazda's current plans include only the 2003 Mazda 6 sedan for North America; however, we could also see the hatchback version over here if Mazda feels there's a market for it.

What do you think? ;-)

"Although the sedan destined for our shores is quite attractive, it's the hatch that really caught our attention."

I just hope the 5-door gets here. I'll bet we'll see the wagon and the sedan first. Then maybe a few years later the 5-door, if sales are good. Love to see it here though! We need more choices in 5-door hatches.

P.S. I normally don't care for "altezza" style tail lights, but they don't look too bad on the Mazda.

however not sure I like the fact the rear resembles the RX8.

I think the hatchback version would be much more marketable than the sedan. We already have enough bland sedans on the market here. My opinion.

Love it! As is, don't change a thing about the styling.

My wife likes sedans. I like wagons. The perfect compromise? :-)

We'll be shopping for a new car for her next, so since she doesn't like wagons generally, I would at least try to get her into a 5 door.

Honda, Toyota, and Nissan all offer better selling sedans. How can Mazda stand out? Zoom zoom, OK, so they handle well and are stylish, but the body styles would open up niches where the Japanese Big Three do not compete.

This is the size hatch that needs to be in the American market. Bring it on!

Although all 3 body styles look great, I really hope they bring the hatchback to the States.

Here's another link describing the new 6 and other new Mazda models

I'm a big fan of Mazdas, especially compared to other Japanese makes; I hope they bring the 5-door here (that seems to be unanimous, let's hope people put their $ where their mouths are). I love the way it looks, perhaps with a color other than yellow. Makes me wonder also if Acura will bring a 5-door RSX here.
I take it this is the replacement for the 626? I think the last time Mazda had a 5-door here (besides the new Protege5) was the 1991 626.
Its replacement is long overdue, the last few 626s have been BLAND.

    Is that Acura's signature penta-grille I see?

Looks stylish enough to pass as a luxury vehicle.

What's with the latest trend for the clear tail lens? I'm really not adjusting to it.

Please.....oh please....please bring the hatchback 6 to the U.S. If the 4 cylinder is less that $20,000 you won't be able to keep them on the lot. And please make the yellow an available color. And please, tell us when we can get one and how much it will cost. And please, please bring it to the U.S. soon, my Neon won't last much longer....

We're looking at a Lexus IS300 Sportcross right now, but the 6 Hatchback looks very nice. No price estimates yet?

Mazda really needs to find a niche in the North America market by bring the 5-door hatch here.

We owned an 89 626 LX hatchback that we sold a couple of years ago. It was very reliable and versatile. No other 5 door car looked as good as that 626. Mazda needs to bring the new hatchback to the US right away, to include a turbo version.

...and while their designers are still at work they should give us a new generation of their 3-door hatchback.

Go to cars.com, click on the link to the Tokyo Auto Show and take a look at the new Mazda RX.

I am a current owner of a 5-spd '88 626 hatchback with 175,000 miles on it and still going strong. I absolutely love this old faithfull. My other car is a '98 Camry that is quite unexciting and I am still having buyers remorse over it. Mind you, there is nothing major wrong with my Camry, it is just plain vanilla boring. I would love to replace my trusty 626 hatch with a new 6 hatch. Are you listening MAZDA!!!!!
I hope they have learned a lesson in not trying to be all things to all people like GM/Ford/Toyota/Honda. They have to go for niches like the wagon and the hatchback. ZOOM ZOOM.......

It looks near perfect. i would buy one tomorrow!!! i've always been a hatchback guy. versatility, and just plain coolness. 78 starfire gt, 84 mustang gt, 86 integra 5dr. i like wagons as well, but you get almost as much versatility plus real sports car looks from a hatchback. MAZDA PLEASE LISTEN TO US FAITHFUL HATCHBACK BUYERS AND BRING THIS BEAUTIFUL NEW CAR TO THE GOOD OLE USA!!!!! If the pro 5 is selling well, this car will too.

We just bought a Hyundai Elantra GT 5-door hatchback and we love the car. However, if the Mazda 6 had been available back in June I would have chosen it over the Elantra just on looks alone! What a neat looking machine.

Like a previous poster in this thread, my wife likes sedans while I prefer wagons. A 5-door hatchback saved my marriage!

I hope Mazda knocks 'em dead with this new offering. We'll need a second car in a couple of years. If they can keep the 5-door hatch MSRP under $20,000 for a 4 cyl./5-speed then I'll be the first in line! Zoom Zoom!

    That was me. :-)

I'd still push for the wagon, but I bet I could sneak her into a hatch without her even realizing it.

    V6 + 5 speed manual is a must, though.

to some executive at Mazda almost 3 weeks ago to please bring the hatch here ASAP.

    I haven't heard anything yet!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If the hatch doesn't come, we'll most likely end up in an Odyssey. She refuses to get a wagon, and I'm finding sedans a bit tight for our needs.

But now that I'm an AWD snob I don't know if I could buy a FWD, even one as beeyootiful as that.
