What should GM do with Hummer

  • Goofed off today and one stop was at the Hummer dealer. Seems gm is paying you to buy the last of the '08's. Had another thought recently but just came from insideautomotive with the bad news.

Thought the financing guys would've had some creative ideas. GM had a costly learning lesson when Olds was killed, no buyers for Hummer, now selling Hummer again.

Had a crazy thought that Hummer should be sold to us, owners and other interested parties-complete or partial. Management, not only at the general, seems to be incompetent these days (good old boy network, frat brothers, hand shake societies, who knows).

Then there is the union is no good, lazy workers, etc. No it is not us it is them.

Now they want billions to stay alive. Why? The middle class has been destroyed and those that haven't may soon be. Let them fail. Buy Chinese or Vietnamese or Brazilian vehicles next year. have the malibu and the h3. You have to burn up what you didn't lease.
  • saw a bumper sticker with a picture of a Hummer with the word "Dummer" written underneath.

    just thought i'd share
  • Two other hummer forums have posts which pretty much say it all. The announcement to sell hummer. The management goofs. Buy a give away '08 H3 or wait for the best ever H3, the '09. Don't they always walk away after they get a product right. Went back to look at wrangler a few more times(cerberus to sell off jeep?). Looked at an H3 '08 with those prices but really holding out for a loaded '09. Now wishy-washy gm sell the line, no takers, sell the line - wonder why we are sitting back.

One post recently, if no hummer then back to jeep, if no jeep back to toyota.

Like the full time 4wd for better_half - no lever to pull. Would liked to have had a higher geared commuter h3 with 3.55 gears and lockers (wanglers, I believe have 3.21, 3.73, and of course the 4.10). Then have the real rock crawler version. Like sfa but didn't like mag article about unlimited's highway wander (alignment problem only?).

A little better highway performance with the ability to get out of trouble. Plus a tired old back doesn't have to crawl down into the sedan/wagon (as a new H3 owner in canada posted).

Not to use a scare tactic, but the roads are getting worse-where did we spend our treasury, billions to oil companies but not a dime more in road taxes to keep our highways from turning into toll roads (who's getting that money), and of course the drunks on the highway. Again, a couple just died in the metroplex when they were hit by a serial drunk driver in a tahoe? (he survived).
  • Can't believe I got the answer to the road taxes and more. The road tax idea was from listening to Ed Wallace's radio show (with great Backsides of History segments) some time back. And my answer is in this Sunday's Ed Wallace's column in the Fort Worth Star Telegram which is linked to at insideautomotive.com

  • I think GM is smart in selling Hummer. From a financial standpoint Hummer is losing money... GM would not only gain money by selling but also it will seal up one of its wounds. GM already has too many truck based SUV's, which is a dying market. I believe that they should still keep an SUV line around but I think a Tahoe/Suburban is a better choice. I understand and respect that there are those of you who do use these vehicles for their actual purposes but I'm afraid to say you're a minority. I see more Hummers in rap videos and mall parking lots then anything. I live out in the country and I still see people using Hummers as an alternative to a minivan instead of a hauler or boulder basher. Believe me I'm not bashing Hummer as a tree hugger or environmentalist (I own an SUV), I just don't think it is the right choice for GM to keep it alive.
  • The three don't want to merge into one. No money for the automakers. Some still don't understand the manipulation they are reacting to. war of the roses, the red army the white army, reds going ballistic against the blues. And a son of a military man who brags about not voting has tried to get people to read (history if nothing else) and use the instrument in the cranium and not just mimic fear mongerers. The artcle linked ends nicely. Maybe the Chinese will be building our cars in the plants they bought this holiday season.

  • Funeral homes should line up to buy all unsold Hummers and convert them into herses - they will be very appropriate to carry away the dead after the collapse of the Big Three ....I am sure Mr. Wagoner and Mr. Lutz would relish the thought of their last journey in a Hummer!
  • You could, if you really cared, sell your prius move to a city and walk or use mass transit or even better telecommute since nothing is built here - people only push papers and there is a lot less of that every day.
  • As much as I believe society has gone down the wrong path with suburbia and sprawl, and while it is not nice to threaten congress or anybody, maybe the big little three should shut their doors at 8 am tomorrow, send employees home, send supplier trucks back, take an extended holiday season. No payroll, no paper pushing, just wish the employees and America a very Happy long holiday season until New Year's or later if the feel good feeling still lingers.
  • Well, Tired Old Dave, when I read that the Detroit Dickheads flew to the Capital in their private jets, with Tiffany begging bowls, I din't know weather to laugh or cry - even a fresh PR college grad could have told them to fly South West - these guys are really arrogent, stupid and don't get anything outside the world of middle aged White men on the golf course!
I walk to the Metro station, live two blocks from Whole Foods and drive my Prius only for grocery shopping and road trips.

I think it would have been better for them to form a convoy to Washington with all of their latest models including hybrids and electric vehicles. Think of the P.R. they would have gotten. :)

Arrogant indeed. They're claiming that their present troubles are solely to do with the current credit situation and have nothing to with the fact, as has been suggested, that they continue to design and build vehicles that the public has little interest in driving.

These people are as isolated from reality as the tobacco executives that each stood up and solemnly swore that smoking tobacco wasn't a known health hazard!

As was suggested, think what a huge amount of positive publicity could have been generated if they'd each driven to Washington in the most economical vehicle that their respective companies produced. Offering to take a cut in salary and bonuses would have helped too.

However, having an innovative business plan to show how the money could be used to good effect would have been more impressive still. Just turning up and expecting a sack of cash to take home is arrogance indeed!

With their luck, their convey would have broken down on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. :P
Lots of bailout talk is happening in the Do You Favor A Government Loan To The Detroit 3? discussion (well, it's happening all over, but especially so in there).
  • Thanks for the link. Don't spend all my spare time in Edmunds World. Even enjoyed the punch line to tidester's set up.

None are automakers, one is from the U.S. and two are from overseas, Reuters reported Thursday."

GM wants to change the name of Hummer to Bummer.

Maybe this witty and intelligent post could be moved from 'Jeep Wrangler' to the appropriate forum?

Sounds like the Chinese are ok with the deal this time too.

GM wanted $500 million. They are getting $150.

I interpret that as "GM valued it at $500 million...boy were they wrong!" :)
