Could a BMW 7, 3 or 5 Series (non diesel) go over a Million Miles?

Any thoughts on whether or not a BMW 7, 3 or 5 Series (non-diesel) could drive over one million miles on the original engine with proper maintence maintained throughout the cars life, garaged and treated well?

Has anyone seen a Lexus with one million miles? Everyone always talks about how reliable and long living the Japan cars are, like Lexus, Toyota & Honda but I personally have not seen any with a million miles. I have seen a Mercedes Benz with over a million miles on the original engine, also a VW and the guy with the record for having the most miles on a car is a guy driving a Volvo from the 1960's.

These mileage claims often neglect to tell you that the engine is opened, cylinder heads replaced or service records mysterious disappeared.

You can keep any car you wish going for one million miles if you want to spend the money to do so---a Yugo, a 1915 Model T or a BMW 7 series.

If you are asking will one go one million miles on an unopened engine, no, I think that is virtually impossible. Most engines are totally worn out at 250--300,000 miles. I've seen a few at 300K+ plus, but they've had some work done to them. I've heard claims of more, but no supporting evidence except boasting over a couple of beers. I've never yet been satisfied with the evidence presented to support such claims.

  • I have a mechanic that has a friend who has a 3 series 1986 with over one million 80 miles on it. He said the engine was rebuilt at 680,000 miles and still going. I have links below that shows mobil performing a test on a bmw 325i with over one million miles. http://www.imotormag.co.uk/news/266664/we_drive_the_bmw_e30_with_over_one_millio- n_miles.html

If you research around you will find more bmw's with over one million miles and still going. I have 3 bmw's two with over 200,000 and still going strong. I have seen people and friends who have over 400,00 miles no overhaul. Same engine but rebuilt transmission. If you just research you will find what you are looking for. Believe in yourself!!

Not the same thing. That was a controlled test to run a car for one million miles in a short period of time.

That's not at all like driving a car for 30 years in weather and rough roads and traffic and attempting to reach 1 million miles.

Anecdotal evidence, that is, what is "seen" or "heard", is not evidence at all. It's just a story that might or might not be true, because it hasn't been carefully investigated.

Like I said, any car...ANY car..."could" go one million miles. Just keep replacing parts.
