    My 2011 Chevy Equinox has had the stalling issue since it hit about 20,000 miles. I bought the vehicle new. On January 23, 2013 I had it at the dealer and they replaced my cam actuators. They told me that should take care of the problem. Yesterday on my way to work, it stalled on me 3 times. I again took it to the dealership. This time they replaced the solenoid valves. The service manager said that GM was going to issue a recall regarding these issues. I will be surprised if this fixes my stalling issue. I am afraid to go long distances with my Equinox.

    so the dealer called me first thing this morning. A new engine has been ordered and will installed when it arrives. They gave me a loaner last nite to drive in the duration. Great service from the dealer!! Let's hope this new engine replacement fixes the issues. :)
  • After having many of the same problems (excessive oil consumption, ticking in the engine, poor gas mileage, smell of oil, timing issues) I took my 2010 Equinox into a Chevy Dealer who repeatedly told me that they could find nothing wrong. I finally decided to do my own research and ended up here, among other forums. Needless to say, I am scheduled to take it to a DIFFERENT Chevy dealer tomorrow. My guess is that mine too, will need a new engine. MY question is this - does the "new engine" solve the problem of the incompatible metals of the piston and cylinders? Or can I expect this problem to arise again in another 50k miles? Is the new engine under a 100k mile warranty? Or the typical dealer warranty on parts and labor? My husband is strongly trying to talk my into getting rid of my nox after the new engine is put in. I really like the vehicle, but am worried about hanging onto it.

    meowkat148 - I have some of the same questions that you do. At the moment I am having conversation with the GM Specialist about my car. It is in the shop with a new 2013 engine ordered and to be installed next week. I'm so happy about that. But when I asked about the warranty on this new engine the answers I got were conflicting. At first she said it would have the standard 12 month/12k miles dealer warranty. No I said that's not good enough. Isn't GM standing behind these engines? Then she said it would be covered under the balance of my powertrain warranty. Told her I would like a new 36k/3 yr warranty as I am 39 months (less than 2yrs left) into my powertrain warranty. She's investigating the owner specific options I may have and calling back with them today. I also asked what GM might be willing to do towards a new car as I feel this one may have some lemon issues..... we'll see what GM will do....
    Like you I really like this car. The mileage has been great and it handles so well. Find a dealer who will work with/for you. The dealer I am at now is wonderful, the car has been in so much the last year we are on a first name 'how-you-doing' basis... but I believe they are trying to do the best for me. Supposedly my Nox is the only 2010 they have had with these problems. And I think they were doubtful about the engine issues until I asked them to check out this forum.
    Maybe others who have had the new engine replaced can give more insight on the warranty of it. I know I would appreciate their input....

    Just got off the phone and the district specialist on my case from GM told me that the best and ONLY thing GM will do is offer me either a $500 Owner Loyalty credit good for one year only or a 12 month Specialty Care package good for oil changes and tire rotations. I have 90 days to decide. GM won't extend the warranty for a full three yr/36k miles on the new engine either. I get the balance of the powertrain and that's it. Gosh Thanks ever so much. They don't seem to understand my fear that this engine won't fail at 50K miles like the last one did.

    I appreciate that yes GM is standing behind the original warranty on the car, just pretty disappointed that they don't seem to be doing much to keep me as a happy customer. And the 'Specialist' tells me she is closing the case as 'pending'.... why do I get the feeling in a few weeks once I decide on these offers that they will be off the table? Offer me $2k towards a new car and I would be happier.

    duetsu ... thanks for the info on your experience regarding the warranty.

    I dropped my 2010 Equinox off at the dealer on Monday with the same problems and they have ordered an engine to put in. I made it to 75000 miles before the oil consumption got really bad so if I get the same warranty, I'm looking at just 25000 miles of warranty.

    Frankly I like this car, and I had hoped to keep this car past 100000 miles but there is just no way I want to take that kind of a chance with an engine design that is known to be defective.

    I agree with you in that GM should be offering everyone who owns this car a better than usual trade valuation towards another vehicle, i.e. all the current promotions plus another $2K bonus for having to deal with this crap.

    I don't understand why GM won't give you a 3 year/36k mile warranty on the new engine. I believe, if you go to a GM dealer and buy (i.e. pay cash) a factory made engine, then it comes with a 3 year/36k mile warranty. If they're replacing the engine with a "new" engine under warranty, then it should come with the 3 year/36k mile warranty. Unless the so called "new" engine is really a rebuilt engine. You need to find out if the "new" engine is really new. Good luck.

    they do not appear to be doing anything to keep happy customers. When I have I will have to go thru the earlier posts - people were given replacement vehicles or 3000.00 credits....
    Those offers do not sem to be on the table any more....

    You are correct - that kind of offer is not on the table. The district rep I spoke to told me that really I didn't have that many issues with my car, gosh I'm driving a loaner while the replacement engine work is done, what MORE would I want? I wasn't inconvenienced the numerous times I had to take the car to the dealer. Not at all.
    I bought this car in good faith. Gave my hard earned money in good faith of getting a quality vehicle. Obviously GM got the better part of this deal.
    Offering $500 credit to a new car is insulting. I can get $500 off before the salesperson and I even start talking serious numbers. I'm not looking for something for nothing. I would like GM to care about what makes me a happy customer. This has been a lesson in dealing with a global corporation that is so large taking care of the individual is certainly not a priority.

    Amen - they think just because they replaced the engine they are off the hook - well the car still does not get the stated gas mileage and runs really rough....
    And they have not even considered the time and energy on our parts bringing this vehicle back to the shop so many time, nor all the oil I needed to put into it...
    You are right - we purchased these vehicles in good faith... with our hard earned money.
    They have lost a customer for life - and I make it a point to share this story with as many people as possible as people need to be aware of what a potential disaster is in store!!!

    I agree with you. WAS a lifetime GM customer .... did I mention that the $500 customer loyalty credit was only good for a year? how nice... :mad:

    I work for a large equipment manufacturer within the service engineering dept. I see how our company goes the extra mile to please the customer when something fails. We depend on repeat business and customer loyalty. We even have a category of warranty called 'goodwill' that enables dealers to take care of issues that are out of warranty to keep the customer happy.
    Here's the irony where my case is concerned. Had the snotty district rep apologized sincerely instead of reading from a script and offered me, say $2000 off of a new vehicle, I would have been happy. I would have felt like I had an ace in the hole, and probably NEVER USED IT. Would have kept this car and drove on.

    Well I'm dropping my car off at the dealer tomorrow morning, throttle body finally came in. Hopefully this resloves my issues and I really hope thats the end of them. Fingers crossed.

    I too work for a large company in the finance industry - and we would never treat oyur customers like this....

  • So the dealer calls....and tells me that the timing chain is bad and will be replacing that under warranty along with a couple sensors and other things. To which he so dutifully explained to me that the timing chain is dependent on oil. Please - do go on. When questioned as to WHY the timing chain was bad - ie. the engine consistenly running low on oil - he gave no answer. When I specifically explained to him what I thought was wrong (cylinder problem) - said that he couldn't investigate that until he could prove that I was excessively consuming oil. He also said that if i was claiming that, that I needed to produce maintenance records to prove that I had taken care of the vehicle so as to not void my warranty. While I may be able to produce some of those records, I often change the oil myself - and have been forced to add oil on the fly. Not happy with how I was treated. Being forced to go through "the process" when I have a good feeling that the cylinders are the problem in the first place. I know that I am not entirely knowledgeable about engine, but aren't their other signs of oil consumption - ie spark plug evidence?
  • Hi-My name is Traci-I named my truck "Chuck" Chuck is sick--REAL sick. Chevy Case ID number 71-1135219519
    11 visits to service with NO RESOLUTION to my problem.
    We replaced
    a) Timing Belt
    b) High Pressure Fuel Pump (TWICE)
    c) Heater Core
    d) AC Compressor
    e) Changed the cover on the crankcase (?)
    f) power wash engine
    g) Carbon filter changed

    GOD-I have lost count on the amount of work I have had done. Owning this truck as become my part time job. We are about to do the Valve Cover. No leaks, no puddles, no blue smoke. Just buring oil smell inside and around the running car during idle.

    Chevrolet Customer Service thinks its ok for me to CONTINUE to own/drive a truck that releases the smell of buring oil IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT when the truck is
    1.stopped at a light
    2.warming up in the driveway
    3.stuck in traffic
    4. ANYTIME it is standing still

    Oder is also OUTSIDE the truck.

    They have refused to offer a Service Engineer because my truck has 70,000 miles and is NOT covered under the bumper to bumper.(this issue began over 6 months ago and about 5k miles or more) (I do have an extended bumper to bumper tho) They think I should TRADE my truck for a new one (AND take a LOSS on this one)

    I am at my wits end. I have no resolution. My 4 year old HATES to get in my truck because "it makes her belly hurt
    Chevrolet does not think my daughters safety is important enough.Please, Please, Please help. I am at a complete loss.
    Don’t get me wrong, I have owned and driven Chevrolets MY ENTIRE LIFE! This is my 2nd Equinox. (I had a 2008 that I traded when I got this one)

    Help. I can’t say it enough.

    I am convincved that until someone dies - they will not do a damn thing!!!
    I am so sorry for your daughter. This is my first and last chevy piece of crap - hoping to scrape together enough money together to buy another car and park this piece of crap until the lease is over and bring it back.
    Funny you should mention the smell - my 11 year old son the other day mentioned how bad my truck smells with the new engine....
    I give up - i cannot afford anymore time on this or I will loose my job and not be able to pay for the piece of crap....
