Audi A4 2004 and earlier

  • I like German cars, so of course, I would go with a VW considering your desire to conserve cash. And, I would lease one for no more than 39 months, and if the price is rightr 36 or fewer months.

But, then again, a friend of mine just leased a new Honda for 36 months and the "price was right." I assume the lease was really low bucks, that is.

I personally can't see myself in a Japanese car -- although I do think Subaru makes some good ones.

Try the VW, try the Honda and try the Subaru. On the other hand, another friend of mine's kid got a Neon R/T and it seems to be "high value" too.

Read the reports, take a test drive -- bet you buy the last one your drive. So save the VW for last.
  • you are only needing the car for commuting, why not also consider the A4 1.8T CVT, unless you need or want Quattro? The A6 2.7T is a nice car, as you probably already know, but it is a bit larger: more fuel, more expense, harder to park, higher insurance cost, all of the negatives of the larger and more expensive car(new, that is). If you need a family car though, then the choice is easy: the A6.

I am wondering how to attach the front license plate for my 2002 A4. I was given a plastic mounting piece by the dealer which appears to require drilling into the bumper to be able to attach it. I am worried about damaging the bumper by doing this on my own but since I am not in the same city as where I bought the car, I can't go to my original dealer and have it done. The local dealer wants $45 to attach it since I didn't buy the car from him. I said no and left thinking I could do it myself. In the end I may just pay the money and get it done instead of risking damage to the car. How have you guys done this? I am in Texas and have been trying to find out if I even need a front license plate. Do any of you guys know? Thanks, Josh
  • Yes, unfortunately TX does require a front license plate, which irritates me to no end. I hate the way it messes up the front end and spoils the designer's intent. However, for most of the past 20 years of living in Houston, I've gone without the front plate and never been hassled by police - they usually have more important things to worry about. Your local police may be bored, and you might not be so lucky. Just carry the plate in your trunk, and tell the cop you're trying to get an appointment to have the service department install it... they'll probably let you go. On the other hand, having no front plate gives the police "probable cause" to pull you over and ask other questions, so take your pick.
  • $45!

I do not understand why the selling dealer didn't do it, unless you didn't ask -- but does the dealer that wants the $45 know that you are going to become his customer?

Wow! I am spoiled by Northland Porsche Audi here in Cincinnati!

I am also irritated that Illinois requires front front end is totally visually "ruined" by the plate. Anyhow when I was in Wisconsin I took the front plate off and yup the cops got more important things to worry about. Then the ex-Accord came to Illinois and in my Chicago suburb cops got nothing interesting to do except pulling me over for front plates and tinted windows. They gave me a warning for taking off the tint but after I used the same excuse as silver bullet (I even have the plate holder in the trunk and the cops didn't check for it), they let me go and told me to put the plate on later.

Mark, I think Jmad325 didn't buy the car from the local dealer who wanted to charge him $45. Why can't you go back to your local dealer when you do oil changes, Jmad? Just tell the cops when you got pull over that you are really trying to put it on next time you go to the dealership. And in the pre-02 A4's, yes the dealer needs to drill holes in the bumper to attach the plate holder which will definitely ruin the bumper. Dealers here automatically put front plate holders on and for guys who take off the holder later on, they need to buy a small cap to plug the ugly drill hole.....or they get new S4 bumpers, but they will forfeit the use of the fog lights if you go that route.....nah you won't, there's no S4 bumper that will fit your 02 yet.

And Mark, of course you are spoiled by that many Audi's have you bought from them??? :>

  • I just put down deposit couple days ago. The vehicle will be arriving the dealer in the first half of Feb.

Rocco, thanks for your help. You have been great!!!

Billy, I will be related to you pretty soon...will be proud Audi owners...8o)

Thank you all for the help during the purchasing process.

good news, I went back to the local place which intially wanted $45 to have them put it on. My temp plate was about to expire, and I was more worried about damaging the car than the $45 so I went in prepared to pay. Luckily though, one of the techs was putting plates on a new TT and the service advisor who initially wanted me to pay got him to put them on for free. I don't know why they changed their mind. I told them I would be coming to them for service after that, since he was nice enough to do it free. anyway, I must say I liked the clean lines of the bumper without the plate but I don't need any trouble from Houston police. thanks guys. josh

Congrats on your purchase.....yup you will be one of us soon.....posting here nonstop all nite long :> So what are the specifics of your order??

Saw an 02 A4 3.0Q Amulet Red on the road this morning.....gorgeous :>

  • Thanks. I got a silver/ebony leatherette 1.8T with Manual, Quattro, Xenon, 16", moonroof, and the Premium package. Paid a bit much in $29,245. They originally asked for 30.045. Did a search on and got nothing in return. When I put down the deposit I wasn't too excited. But I now get more excited as I wait. Hopefully it comes sooner than the expected delivery date of early Feb.

    Hi Gang,
Well, I finally ordered my new A4. I got the 3.0Q w/ 6spd, sport, xenons and a moon roof. I did not care for any of the other stuff. What color? Amulet red with the beige 'ette. I had to order because the local dealer basically did not have any that were not fully loaded. I got $1100 off MSRP from the dealer and another $600 from Audi since I am a repeat customer. Apparantly, the money back from Audi changes month to month. The dealer is hopeful I'll get the car before April, but I will be surprised. It took 3 months to get the 1.8T. I am very excited. We will be driving this car up to Maine this summer (from NC), so I will be able to answer anyone's question about long distance traveling. So far, our '97 has been great for road trips.

congrats to the other new owners.

  • Anyone know which systems on an '02 A4 1.8 tip work in reverse? ABS, ESP, Traction Cont, Brake Assist, etc. It's a long and slippery downhill trip down my driveway in reverse in the winter. All electronic help is appreciated (in addition to the winter tires). I'm on the brakes all the way down with little need to turn.

My '98 jeep looked up the brakes and did a near 180 the other day on the way down. ABS did not work in reverse, wheels locked, no other electronics aids on that vehicle. (Although the Jeep went right back up as though it was dry pavement). Not brave enough to try the Audi that day.

Congrats on the new car! I know you are very excited and can't wait, kinda like being a kid again on Xmas morning isn't it?
Billy, I see you have another silver A4 out there now that A4 4vince has made his selection..... :)
BTW everyone we finally have SNOW here in the Chicago/Milwaukee region! Who'd a thunk the middle of Jan. for the first measureable snow? Billy, I am going to find a parking lot later tonight and fool around, how about you? Any powerslides in your future? :)

I plan on purchasing a A-4 '02 model in the next couple of weeks.
My question to the Audi experts is about aftermarket wheels.
Tire rack says that a BBS "RC" wheel 18x8.5 with
235-40-18 tires will fit this car with no rubbing.
Can somebody confirm this. Also what is the best high perf. summer tire can you recommend (I live in California).
    Thanks, Ron

I'm very happy with my Michelin Pilot Sports. Mine are size 225-45-17. They grip and ride great, and don't punish the ears either. They get very good marks and reviews at TireRack too.

After a month on my winter tires, I can also recommend the Dunlop Wintersport M2 (my size being 205-55-15). They are a bit less responsive than the Michelins but still quite good in all respects. I'm very impressed with how quiet they are for a 'snow' rated tire. I've had louder all-seasons. They haven't been truly tested in snow yet. Philly's only gotten one teeney little snow storm so far.

  • I really like the Dunlop SP9000

Have had 7 Audis. Bought 98 A4 2.8 Q new in June 98. Ordered 02 A-4, 3.0Q Nov 12 2001. Cash no trade .Waiting for delivery. Some message boards mentioned $600 from Audi USA to loyal customers. Called Audi USA. Said one program ended 10/31. New program started 11/22 and that I am not eligible for the $600. Doesnt seem fair. Have others experienced this? Did others get the $600? Thanks
