  • After the replacement of the driveshaft (supposedly I had an old version), the pounding, cyclical, humming, grinding or whining noise that we have been referring to is still there, just as it was on day one. Without looking at the speedometer, I can tell you when I reach 70mph or when I slow to below 70mph, based solely on that annoying noise.

     

    The dealer is installing the shield that tgilbertjag is talking about on my X-Type right now, but I doubt that will help. Apparently the differential is not the issue as proven by tgilbertjag in Post #2089. Now, what really bugs me is the fact that I picked up a loaner this morning (2004 X-Type 3.0, automatic), which was manufactured the same month as mine, but it is absolutely quiet at 70mph and above, which proves that the noise is NOT NORMAL. The mechanic that worked on my car said that there is only so much that he can do and investigate with this noise. If the known remedies according to the bulletin do not help, they will need to call a field specialist who will test drive my car with me and decide on the course of action based on his findings. This is becoming cumbersome and very inconvenient.
  • So, my X-type is on its second day at the dealership being checked for noise at 70 mph. Supposedly they have it hooked up to some sort of noise analyzing equipment. We will see. In the meantime, I have been enjoying the 3.0 loaner, which has been a blast to drive. Here are some differences I noticed between my 2.5 and this 3.0:

    - The 17 inch 225 wheels give much better grip in the snow and on wet surface and they take potholes less harshly than the 16 inch 205s that I have on my 2.5.

    - I like the way the wood-covered steering wheel feels.

    - The 3.0 has some serious power behind it, although the automatic transmission is not as refined as I would expect. Merging into the expressway is like being launched from a catapult and you reach 100 mph before the transmission hits 4th gear.

    - Fuel economy is noticeably worse than the 2.5 in city driving.

     

    Conclusion: While the 3.0 is very exhilarating to drive, the 2.5 with manual still manages to blend sportiness, smoothness and good fuel economy.
  • Unfortunately a tree recently fell on my wife’s 2003 X-Type and totaled it, so now we are getting ready to purchase a new 2005 X-Type and I was wondering if the have been able to improve the AM radio reception on in the newer cars. My wife’s 2003 X-Type got the worst AM reception of any vehicle I have ever been in, has this been fixed??
  • I just bought a 04 X in Rochester NY and the whine noise has been there since new. Let me know if there is anything to be done for this. Tks
  • Guess you are trying to drum up business for another board. The F Type was cancelled three years ago. Jaguar has no money to spend, Ford won't spend much on Jaguar so dream on. And, it wouldn't replace the XType anyway.

    I am a VW guy, but confess that I have always loved the looks of Jaguars. The current X-type would be the only Jag I could afford, and it would be a used one at that. However, I've heard that these will be discontinued in 2007. Does anybody know of this? I may be interested in these X-types, but certainly NOT if they are only going to made for 2 more years.
  • The dealer replaced the drive shaft, but the whining noise is still there. I think the problem is in the differential. The mechanic and his service adviser supposedly drove three other 2004 X-Types to compare the noises and surprisingly they were all louder than mine (I did not participate in this test, though). Apparently loud drivetrain noises and whine are a very common problem. Just search all forums using the word "whine" and you will get 10 pages of complaints related to drive train noises in various brands and models, although I did not see Mercedes, BMW or Audi mentioned. It is just very disappointing that Jaguar couldn't perfect its drivetrain. It is possible that some of us are very sensitive to any noises that shouldn't be there, especially when driving a Jaguar. The Company is certainly aware of the problem, the best example of that is a shield that they installed to the bottom of the vehicle above the drive shaft to quiet it down. I guess this is their solution to the whine issue. So, trying to persuade the dealer to fix these noises is like asking them to correct the issues that Jaguar (or Ford) engineers couldn't fix.

    I have just come back from a 2,500-mile vacation trip from Chicago to South Carolina and back. The X-Type performed well with a cumulative gas mileage of 26 mpg, including cold starts, some city driving and a trip through Smoky Mountains. For the most part I was driving at 85mph, but at times reached 90 or even 95. On a short (70 miles) stretch I drove no faster than 65mph and the mileage for that distance came out at 31.5 mpg (not bad). For a 2.5 liter 5-speed, the car was very satisfying to drive through Smoky Mountains and its power felt adequate. Even on a steep highway uphill distances, where the semi-trucks were doing 30mph with emergency lights on, I was cruising at 80mph on the fifth gear. The 2.5 is not a rocket like the 3.0, but its power is quite sufficient for most applications. So, other than the annoying drive train whine (which if not corrected may persuade me to get rid of this Jaguar quicker than I thought), it is a fine automobile. The seats were also comfortable as I did not feel fatigue after 6 hours of continuous driving. The oil consumption over the first 4,000 miles of driving this vehicle is negligible and the oil still looks light and clean. I still don't like the stiffness of the clutch. It takes more muscle than it should to depress it. I recently went to the Chicago Auto Show and tried the clutch in any manual-transmission car on the floor. The X-types' clutch feels the stiffest of all, even when compared to the Kias, Chevys and even the muscular Mustang. You should try the clutch in a BMW 325, it gives out so little resistance! It must be a pleasure to drive. Anyway, let me know what you think of my observations, especially if you share them.

  • Hi axiomlover: Well actually I've been in the family for the past 38 months. I bought an '02 when they first came out and had almost no problems with it. Lease was up and I turned it in as the residual was too high to purchase and there is no negotiation with Jaguar Credit. My spouse cried and cried when her baby left so I broke down and got another. Got to stay away from those dealers!

    They have a special on 3.0 cars with sunroof at $399 per mo. BUT......on the floor was a really gorgeous 3.0 Sport. It is platinum with black leather and alcantra seats with perforated inserts. The sport package includes suspension, dynamic stability control, 18" Aruba wheels with Parelli PZeros, black upper and lower mesh grills, lower side sills and big exhaust tips. The car also has the X1 prem pack and heated seats, reverse park and a carbon fiber dash.

    Couldn't resist. Sticker is 41K. I told them if they could lease it to me at the $399 for 39 months I would take it. We are driving it now. It is a head turner. BTW, they had several 2.5 manuals with sunroof for $23,xxx. I would snap one of those up in a second if my wife would put up with the manual. What a steal!

    Those Sport packages are really nice, especially with the 18" wheels, mesh and lower fascia. Congrats on a nice deal! $41thd sticker is no small change, but $399 per month makes it so much easier to own. Did you notice any significant changes/improvements from the '02 model you used to drive? How is the drivetrain noise?

    I'll keep the board posted if I have issues with drive train noise etc. Biggest improvement that I notice right off the bat is TWO cup holders instead of my previous one. No more fights with the spouse to see who gets the one & who has to hold the sweaty cup.:-) Fortunately, my '02 was trouble free and I'm hoping this one will be to. I am not sold on the carbon fiber dash as I really like the wood. Also, I have not heard much positive about the Perelli PZero Nero tires. They handle great in the dry but tread life is not so good. And they are expensive.
  • I agree with your observations. I have an 03 X-Type 2.5 automatic - now with 23K on it. I've found the power more than adequate, and, my gas mileage on long trips is comparable to yours. Mine had a drive train noise problem - a droning, booming noise at idle and at about 3ooo rpm. The dealer replaced the torque converter flex plate, and, that eliminated it. One other strange thing about mine - just after its 20K service visit, I took the car on a long business trip, and, noticed that it was making noticably more power than before. The dealer and I have no idea why, but, I'm certainly enjoying the extra ooomp its got now.

    on the X-type, please. Why does Edmunds have "Production Limited" next to the 2.5L manual and the 3.0L automatic? Will there be a 2006 3.0L automatic?

    Dealer told me back in Jan. that the 2.5 was no longer being produced, or at least no longer being shipped to the US. (Therefore, we are no longer interested in Jaguar and :-P to snobs of Jaguar USA)

    Don't know anything about the 3.0, though.
  • Hi, I was considering purchasing a 2002 X-type 2.5 sport with a manual. I was told it takes premium fuel but I didn't understand why as the Contour, Mystique, and Cougar that shared the same 2.5 Duratec ran on regular. I wouldn't care about the performance decrease as long as the car didn't start knocking or the check engine light didn't come on. The only reason I don't want to purchase the car is the gasoline issue. I already own 2 cars that require premium and with gas getting more and more expensive it seems dumb to buy another premium fuel car. If someone has any input on if I can run the car with regular please let me know. Thanks

    Yes, the 2.5 is going away. The 3.0 line is actually being expanded, with a wagon and an upscale van den Plas option. Diesels are being added to the line up as well. I think this is all good news. $23,000 Jaguars are not a good idea for Jaguar or for those who want the Jaguar name to carry some cachet.

    I agree with you that $23,000 Jaguars may not be a good idea for the image (mine was actually $21.7K), but at the same time I am happy I got an opportunity to own one at an early age. It is amazing how many looks I get on the street. I have a Salsa Red, which is pretty visible. In my 2-month ownership time frame, I got three "Awesome Jag" shout outs from pedestrians, not to mention the double looks from others. It feels great that the Jaguar image still lives on!

    Hi Oldengineer, the power may not be overwhelming in the 2.5, but I was surprised at a recent full acceleration from the red light standing next to an Infinity G35 coupe. We were going head-to-head at the first gear (G35 was manual, too) and through half of the second gear, when 280 horses in G35 showed their teeth and left me behind. Still, I never expected to be faster than G35, but having paid $13K less, I felt pretty happy about my ride and its image.

    I'm glad you and some others got a great deal but now you should want the price to increase dramatically! ;-)

    BTW, whatever happened to your whining drivetrain problem? You posted on 1/17 that you would let us know what the dealer said when you took your car back in.

    Further, I wouldn't be suprised to see fuel economy to decrease with the use of 87 octane. In that case, it's penny wise and poung foolish not to spring for the $0.20 extra per gallon for premium.

    Postoak, please look at post #2100 where I discribed my dealer visit regarding the drivetrain noise. In a nutshell, the noise is still there, but I will probably wait until my 10K-mile service before I bring it up again and ask the dealer to replace the differential and whatever other issues arise. Since the replacement of a driveshaft did not fix the noise and Jaguar ordered the mechanic to install a noise shield under the carriage of the vehicle, they probably don't have a mechanical solution for the issue. Not yet, anyway. Hopefully, if enough people keep complaining, Jaguar will be forced to improve their engineering. BTW, the mechanic who test drove the car with me said: "You should hear what an early '02 X-Type sounds like at highway speeds" suggesting, of course, that drivetrain was so loud.

    I reread post #2100 but I'm not clear on whether or not they installed the noise shield on your vehicle. If they did, what percentage of the noise did it eliminate?

    Sorry I wasn't clear. They did install the shield, but I cannot say it made a significant difference. The noise may be a bit more muffled, but it is definitely still audible.

    that you (axiomlover) and tgilbertjag made regarding your whine. You both had the differentials replaced, to no avail, and you had the driveshaft replaced, also with no result. What I didn't notice is whether either of you noticed oldengineer's post that *his* whining problem was solved when the service department replaced his torqueconverter flexplate. Maybe you should have them check that.

  • Hello All, I was fed up the issues on my 2004 xtype, so i went to the dealer and they were GREAT. I ended up moving to a 2002 S Type loaded with a 4.0V8 and the navigation system. No noises at all like the X Type. Good luck to you all.....
