With my 2001 I'm at 1900 rpm's when I'm doing 70 mph.
I have the 5.3L, 3.73 axle, and 265 tires.

Ryan, what does your tach read now at 70 mph with those larger tires?

...hope this gets him back posting with us again.

tucsonjwt: As for not using heat/ac, don't you loose more milage with the wind drag from an open window (even with visors) than from using the heater? I agree the AC compressor can draw some hp from the motor, but why be uncomfortable for a few pennies? Anyways, I ordered my 8.1 for the pure joy of driving it, mpg be dammed! (Sorry Poca) Just my opinions...

Hey why doesn't this new topic show up on the menu. I hope this puts it up on it now. If not can you check it out Pocahontas.

    Thanks

  • I think there's a $20 fix-it fee, plus however much it is to remove the tint. But that's beside the point. It just makes me mad that I spent the $ to have it done, and now I have to pay to have it taken off. I don't understand why California is so harsh on this. In Az, you can tint any of the windows as much as you want. If I was a cop, I would find tinted windows so insignificant. Why don't they go after some drug dealers or something.

I have a manual trans, 3.73, LT245/75-16's = 2120 rpm at 70 mph. The 5spds have 0.73 (1500) or 0.75 (2500) overdrive ratios. The automatics have 0.70 (1500) or 0.75 (2500). A quick check of websites failed to find the OD ratio's for the HD transmissions.

So where did Edmunds get Ryans Silverado picture from ?
  • Hi Dave & everyone- I'm linking ryan's pic directly from his website.

If you'd like your truck featured here, please send me an email... with your website address. And I'll put it on the schedule to link it up. Okay?

Btw, it helps if the picture is not too big, that way it won't take up too much space below the title. Ryan's pic is about as large as I'm able to fit up there. Talk later. ;-)

a few posts in the previous Chevy Silverado concerning a creaking coming from the upper dash. I, myself, have had a cricket like noise coming from the upper dash (actually, sounds like it came from over the dash) and it started making a appearence in a particuler curve on the way to work. After awhile it got so it shows up more often. Took it to the dealer's service shop and they in turn had a auto-glass specialist come and recaulk/reseal the windshield in place. Appearently that was it so I no longer got "the crickets".

regualtions - all of the tint shop have the rules and won't install the dark stuff. When they showed me the darkest they would install - I took a pass. The dealers tint the side windows as a big sticker mark up item - better than nothing I guess.

The link is now there and works on the menu. Thanks for fixing it for us. We would have to be overlooked. I think the truck of the week is a great idea, and actually I think that it would be great to have a truck of the week for the entire pickups forem to compete for. It would be a neat way to show off the proud owners of the trucks and the trucks. Im not sure if you can do that but I think you can. Also, feel free anytime to take part in the discussion. There isn't anything that says you can't join in. I can remember when Meridith used to. Hopefully Ryan has gotten his nerves back and returns, we all miss him. Id like to nominate his truck for the Pickups Conference truck of the Week :)

Thanks for all your help and dedication

  • I am considering purchase of a 2001 GMC or Chevy full size PU 4x4 with extended cab. I am wondering about how safe the rear seat is for children ages 7 years and 9 years of age.

Also is the rear seat comfortable on extended trips for adults as well as children.

    Thanks in advance
  • Does anybody have any thoughts on airbags for the rear suspension? Im thinking of putting them on my truck for a better ride when towing our fifth wheel camper.I have a 2000 2500 ext. cab SB 4x4,will these help the ride or would I be wasting my money. The camper is 29 feet with a pin weight of 1500-1600 pounds. The truck only seems to drop 3 inches when hooked up.You guys can take a look at it at
    http://www.picturetrail.com/careyace
    any thoughts would help alot.
    Thank you all,Andrew
  • the reae seat is fine for kids, but for adults, you'd be better suited with a crew cab for longer trips. As for saftey, it has sholder belts on the outboard positions and a lap belt in the middle just like a rear car seat.

Andrew, you could put air bags on and they should be fine for that application. But I know a guy (not me) who put airbags on a 1500 Reg cab LB 4x4 and hauled 500 gals of water several times to fill an ag sprayer. A piece of advice DON'T do that. That was over 4 grand and he bent the frame where the cab joined the frame. He spent a couple of grand getting it fixed back to factory spec. And traded for a 3/4 ton, no problem since. The truck he had is fine and A guy I know bought it. He has put 20k on it since then and no more problems. This was a 99 5.3L. But the airbags are fine as long as the tires are up to it and you don't exceed the GROSS axle weight for either axle. They would be a good solution for that camper.

Chesapeake, the rear seat should be comfortable for your children. The ext. cab is the biggest out there, have taken adults for 400 mile trips in back, but you have to cheat the front seat up about 4" when I usually have it all the way back. It works great for Occasional use or shorter trips. I think my next truck will be a crew cab though.

SInce Edmunds owns and operates this site site they ahve every right to operate it as they see fit. I haven't seen the posts that have been deleted, nor have I seen any of the emails Edmunds has sent to offenders but our host seems to be pretty evenhanded and restrained. I have enjoyed the wide ranging exchange of ideas here and trust that the freewheeling atmosphere won't be dampened.

I remember several people posting about rear air bags in the archived Silverado topics, but can't remember who they were. You may want to try searching them.Anyone out there remember who had the air bags? Also, you may want to try the camper topic.

It'd be nice to see Ryan back here. Hate to see any of the regulars leave. Of course since Ryan's not posting he can probably spend a lot more time with his honey!

More room than Ford or Dodge and Tilt back an a comfortable 18 degree angle rather than straight up like the other two.

Also the front shoulder belts are mounted off the seat back rather than the roof so gives a nice unobstructed entrance for adults.

    Makes a world of difference.

'01 Reg cab 2500HD LB with 8.1/allison white

Not bad at all for a reg cab...dealer wanted $34K

    '01 xcab 2500 2500HD SB 6.0 onyx black

Not as good as the 8.1 but no slouch either.

The 8.1 had 3.73 and the 6.0 had 4.10. Dealer wanted $36K for the 6.0. The 8.1 was MSRP + $4K and the 6.0 was MSRP + $6K. Talk about ripoff. Salesman told me he could get me a deal at MSRP + fees....yeah right. These were 2wd with locker.

Not in that much of a hurry to buy a new one. Not at those prices.

Just couldn't get over those black flares on the black truck. Made it look kinda cheap and scratched the paint. The LT245/75R16 left a big gap between the tire and the fenderwell on the bed. Almost 20". Looked kinda goofy more like a Dodge. Then again...depends on what you want

Your kids are probably going to be safer in the silverado than in a minivan. For more safety look at the 2500 crew cab (if you need full truck&bed) or F150 Supercrew(if you don't). The "b-post" and regular front-opening doors offer more side impact protection and seem more secure. As extended cabs go, Chevy/GM are by far the roomiest.

I have had the front(faceplate?) of the dash off and put some foam in the left front area of the dash without much success. the far right side of the dash(passenger side) has the same problem but access to it isn't going to be easy. As I had mentioned earlier, it is only at colder temps, so if I can't resolve it, oh well. I'd take this minor problem over my previous '00 2wd Shakerado!

    That's 4000 lbs!

....air bags will help it so it doesn't sag....but won't increase the weight rating....

That is 2500 territory for sure

You gotta be s@#$%^&g me? I ordered mine for $200 over Invoice. I saw one on a lot here with some $2000 add on for "Market" something or other. But you know what? It's still sitting there. Kinda makes you wonder. They try to gouge you on a truck that they can't "seem" to deliver but at the same time they are shutting down plants for weeks at a time to clear the lots of the glut of 1500's that are out there. Ask yourself how many 2500HD crew cabs you have seen on the road and compare that to the number of F-250 SD crew cabs you see. Ford is kicking their [non-permissible content removed] right now and GM wants to play games. Go figgure.

where Dean lives......what's he gonna do?....drive to a different dealer?

There are three chevy dealers and two gmc dealers where I live. Do you know how they get their allocations? Each dealer receives a listing of what GM is sending. When the trucks arrive, one representative from each of the three dealers meet to pull straws to see which truck goes to which dealer. Ordering....takes anywhere from 4-6 months on a 1500, who knows on a 2500. Needless to say, the dealer isn't dealing. Market conditions dictate rather than what's happening at the factory.
  • the titled of this discussion has changed to "Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra - Owners hangout" In addition, the old Silverado XVIII has been reopened.

Reason being: we will no longer have stopped/continuing discussions. That way your subscribtions will alway be current. However, this discussion will remain and it will be a more casual hangout... for Silverado/Sierra owners to discuss their vehicles.

    Happy Motoring! ;-)

This should hopefully aleviate some of the problems. :)_ Now if we can just get RYAN back we will be good.

    Thanks Again

    Hunter

I assume we get a little more lattitude in this version, like we wish we had on the other correct?
  • Perhaps you place too much importance on things already forgotten. ;-) To further clarify what "this" is really about: It was my error in the first place to stop the previous Silverado discussion...and continue it here. With our new software, there is technically no need to stop/continue a discussion.

In addition, I think people will appreciate this, because they will not have to update their subscriptions. My apologies for any confusion or inconviences... And now back to the subject of Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra - Owners hangout .

    Thanks. ;-)
