  • yes, i took it to the dealer but the fix was only temp. I expected the vehicle to be supper quiet.
  • Not only it will take care of the pinging sound, it may also jam wind noise and an occasional police car siren. And the more DYI projects the better for the luxury car segment. This way these banking Presidents and CEOs will be immune from disconnect from Reality. Very characteristic for your industry of late..

  • (12/30/11) I traded in my 2001 BMW 740il on Thanksgiving weekend, for a certified preowned 2010 Ls460. I made the switch based on consumer reports ratings, talking to a few owners of lexus vehicles and price conparison on repairs. After owning the vehicle for about a month and i have put about 400 miles on it, I can say that im quite pleased with my decision so far. It isn't as heavy as the beamer, but it has more bells an whisles than I will ever use. I am looking forward to putting it on the road from the Houston area to visit relatives in Louisiana in a couple of weeks. I will keep you posted. :)

    Having owned and driven both, I can predict you'll be happy with the quiet, the creature comforts, ride, handling is "good", and it will get you there with nothing failing to work. BUT, you'll miss the "driver's" feature of the BMW. There is a difference in handling that's difficult to describe, but you know it when you feel it. The Bimmer handles better than anything else I have driven in that class. If the Bimmer would stay out of the shop, I'd drive one. But the total cost to drive one is horrendous!

    I have to disagree with you on two issues. First, I too am experiencing the engine noise and have been told by Lexus first it was injector noise and subsequently it was mechanical fuel pump noise. It seems Lexus can't agree among themselves what the issue really is. I took a new 2011 out to see if it made the same noise and it did not. I replaced the recommended 0-30 oil with 10-30 and the noise seems reduced by about 30% i would estimate. This leads me to believe in the fuel pump theory. As for accepting this noise, that is total hogwash. I also have a ls 430 which is quiet, no such noise and by the way to your second point, gets better mileage, by about 1 to 2 mpg than my 460 in the same driving pattern. I first thought this might be due to the 460 not being broken in but the differential in mpg continues now that the 460 is broken in.

    I am about to escalate the 460 noise problem with Lexus corporate, as the local dealer is able to do nothing for me. I feel that I have given them plenty of time to resolve the issue.

    I had two 430s, the 460 does much better on fuel and I haven't moved. It's a fact. Maybe mine is extraordinary, but I doubt it since the reviews on the 460 when it came out also corroborated the increase in mileage over the 430, as well at the extra horsepower - remarking, "how they do that"?

    Didn't know they had a mechanical fuel pump???? WTF? Haven't seen one of those since my 1981 Fairmont!!

    Still could care less about the click. Once I knew it was normal, and not a problem, I tune it out. It's what I do. Have much bigger issues in my life.

    Go get an S-Class. Will be in for lots of malfunctions - but is quieter.

    Full disclosure, my 460 is a sport, perhaps thats why the mpg difference, but I mostly run it in ECO mode...... Yes, there are two mechanical fuel pumps. One on each side of the motor. They are driven off one of the cams on each bank. The 460 also has an electric fuel pump. The last tech took considerable time showing me the pump location and letting me listen to them with his stethiscope. They are located at the firewall end of the motor.

    And they are the source of the ticking? I was told it was the high-pressure injectors. Well, either way, they don't bother me. Machines make noise, my Lexus doesn't squeak, rattle or vibrate, and with the Mark Levinson going at reasonable volume, OR the excellent climate control on in the summer in Vegas, I don't notice it. YMMV. :shades:

    BTW, how is the Sport to drive compared to the standard model? The 460 handles so much better than the 430, I am thrilled with it. Better handling would be nice though, however, I don't want to give my "boulevard ride".

    Had an 03 S-500. Loved everything about it but the crappy air conditioning, which they are known for, and the minor malfunction issues all over the cabin. I think at one time I counted 13 things that weren't working right inside the cabin...... So I got an 05 LS430. Much happier. Not as much fun to drive, but only see the dealer every 5000 miles for oil.

    I was told by the service dept people, the first time I complained, it was fuel injectors. Subsequently however, I was told it was the mechanical fuel pumps. Maybe it is neither, but when I put a heaver weight motor oil in, the volume was reduced by about 30%. The mechanical pumps are driven off a cam lobe and I was told the clearance but can't recall the number now.
  • Interesting. Not sure about the multiple mechanical fuel pumps. That is a new one for me, although quieting by use of heavier motor oil would seem to confirm the possbility.

    I would personally not mess with the oil viscosity in an engine of this sophistication and precision. The tolerances in this engine are very tight. They call for 0-20W I believe, for a reason. Going to thicker oil can prevent very close tolerance areas to lack sufficient lubrication and wear. To quiet down this (IMO) negligable idle noise by messing with the specs required by the designers of this engine is unwise, and I would not consider it for the first 250,000 miles...... YMMV. Just how I feel.
  • (For Used car lexus buyers)Take heed with this message so you don't have to experience what i've lost so much. So i'm in the market to buy a lexus ls 460. I test drove the 2007 ls 460 with 57k on it with 1 previous owner. After first for two to three minutes of driving I decided to buy it, and there was no substatiating evidence to point out any concealed defects with the vehicle, I mean come-on it's a 5 minute test drive. I also did buy an extended warranty for 1800. After I purchase the car I drove it home and within a few days after driving it on the highway I started to notice noises and vibration issues. Vibration issues occur between 70 - 80 mph, and over here 72mph is the average highway speeds. Not acceptable for this class and level of luxury vehicle. When brakes are applied there is a clicking noise. After hours of research I found other people having this issue to be told that it may be the brake actuator. I requested service history for the vehicle and I found out that the previous owner had complained about the same problem, and they actually replaced the actuator and various other things related to the brakes. Wow, after replacing all that the brake still make those noise, all right fine, no big problem I can live with that noise. By the way I did bring it in to the dealership to complain about the brake noise and the vibration and to my totally shocking amazement(exaggerating ofcourse) they said it's normal for that to happen.

    So I keep driving the vehicle for another few days only to notice ratteling noise in the front of the vehicle only when going over a series of small bumps. Dealership mechanic says he doesn't notice anything. Okay either i'm crazy or your stupid and lying to me, and i'm not crazy. After I drive it further for another few days warning lights come on the dash stating that the vsc and the abs failure are occuring with the afs light flashing on and off. Bring in to the dealer, mechanic states that the front left bearing needs to be replaced for 750 total. okay so they change it out. They give me a loaner car a 2011 AWD lexus ls 460 with only 14,000 miles. Guess what? This one doesn't drive smooth too, some kind of ratteling noise in the front suspension also!!! wow! I thought it was just my car!! Then i wanted to investigate a little further so I drive out to another dealership somewhere else and now I test drive a LS 460L with 46,000 miles and let me tell you this car drove like it had 350,000 miles on it! holy crud, can you believe they were selling this car for 45 grand? This car had even worse suspension/vibration issues i've ever experienced in my life with a luxury sedan.

    (By the way what I love when you bring the vibration issues up to a dealership is that they tell me, well was it in the cold for long before you started the car? because if it was then the tires need to get warmed up first, or another excuse I love to hear is that my tires need to be replaced or balanced!! Dipshit, do you retards realize that vibration symptoms and causes can have various factors other than tires, wheel balancing and alignment? take for instance, front end coils/struts/shocks, tie rods, bearings, cv axle joints, bushings, sway bar link, drive shaft balancings.. by the time i figure out what is wrong with this car my bill is going to be so high that i've already could've bought two or three more cars!!!)

    I can live with everything else except the vibration issues, so I start to test drive ANOTHER lexus ls 460 they say it is "certified", this lexus drove like the suspension system also had a slight vibration problem to it, totally amazing but not surprised at this point.

    My advice, I think that these cars are beautiful and everything with all the gadgets and all and styling is great, engine reliability is excellent, everything but the luxury drive that should be there for this type of vehicle with this type of price tag is not there at all. Unless your okay with that don't look to buy an ls 460 until they do a redisgn and re-engineer and correct their design flaws that are inherent in the ls 460.

    To lexus: you need to research how lincoln builds their suspension and take a page out of their book, i mean.. forget the page, take the whole book!

    I'm not doubting you, (well, maybe I am...) because my 2009 with 45,000 trouble free miles has none of those issues, never has. It has been perfect. Hard to believe all three of the ones you drove have these same issues, when mine is so good. I drove Lincolns for 16 years, and was very happy with them. Nothing against them either, but my Lexus is fine too.
  • Doubt all you would like, but there is no reason for me to lie about these experiences, I don't gain anything in any way. I'm not a anti import fanatic or someone like that, infact I love imports for their reliability. My father and other family members have driven imports ever since I was a small boy... and so i'm not that much of domestic fan either, I prefer imports. I can't sit there and say that new lexus or all other lexus's are like this or even your lexus and, especially the LS 400 prior to 2007 series because i'm not a critic, but all I can report are the experiences that i've had with these 4 or 5 expensive random vehicles drove. If anyone out there can confirm similar types of experiences please post your experiences about these ls 460's. Thanks.

    I too have been a long time Lexus fan. Prior to my current 2011 LS 460 I had a 2009 LS, 2001 LS and 1996 ES.

    Up until the 460 I was convinced Lexus made the best car for the money in the world.

    However with the 460 things have changed. I still love the styling and the technology but the engineering and assembly is now badly flawed.

    My problems with the 8 speed AWD in my 2009 LS are well documented on the other Lexus owner's site. Lexus (to their credit) eventually did a buyback. I thoroughly test drove the replacement 2011 and, at that time, could not detect a problem. But now, after 10,000 miles the transmission is starting to show the same flaws. I am not surprised Lexus choose to not use the 8 speed in the new GS

    The brake actuator was replaced on the 2009 and that solved the clicking brake problem. The rear air suspension on the 2011 is now creaking and groaning and I suspect it will need to be completely replaced.

    Both the 2009 and 2011 have the engine ticking but the 2011 is a little quieter.

    My 2001 LS was flawless but based on my LS460 experience this will be the last Lexus I will own.

    Sounds familiar. Thought they would have fixed those things from 2007.
    Some guy in a 1991 LS came buy me the other day and I told my wife I wish I had that one back.
