Explorer 4.0 6cyl. SOMC - Won't Stay Started - Black Smoke

I have a 99 Ford Explorer with the 6 cyl, 4.0 SOMC engine. It has 42K on engine and was running find until yesterday. I went to start it and it kept dieing out if you left it at an idle. If you stepped on the accelerator it would stay started. However, when you kept it running by doing that there was black smoke coming out tail pipe. Any idea what would be the problem?
I was told that it might be a EGR valve sticking. This has to to with the emmission control stuff. Thank you. Email at accucast@home.com

    Well, it needs to be scanned and diagnosed. Could be lotsa things. Obviously some kind of fuel delivery problem and over rich fuel mixture.

    Black smoke out the tailpipe is unburned fuel. First guess would be a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. Is the check engine light on?
