I'm seriously considering buying a used 08 EB EL RWD with 16,800 miles. Are there any problem areas with the new generation of Expeditions?

I purchased a used 07 EB 4wd Expedition back in June. The only issue I've run into is poor shifting with the 6speed transmission (slow to downshift to 1st when coming to a brief dead stop, it would stay in 2nd gear, unless stopped for several seconds). I don't know if it affects 2008 models or not. I had the dealer perform a TSB to reprogram the module that controls the transmission and that fixed the problem. So far I really like the Expe.
  • my 03 xlt has recently started to stall upon initial start up, when i first turn the truck on when it's cold or has been sitting for a while, it hesitates to start, but then kicks over after a few seconds, and if i turn the truck off right after the hesitant initial start up, and start it up again, it doesnt hesitate to start, and it starts right up just fine. HELP, Any Ideas????? :confuse:
  • I have a 2003 Expedition, 5.4L V-8 Eddie Bauer. My wife took it in for annual state inspection and while inspecting the tires the service tech told her the front wheel bearings were bad. He told her that he would have to replace the entire hub assemblies because "you can't just replace bearings like you could in the old days on old cars". So he's charging ~$1200 parts & labor to replace both front hub assemblies. Can't the bearings only be replaced as long as there is no damage to the hubs?

  • Please go to : Ford knows they have a problem with this, this site will tell you all about it.
  • I have a 1998 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4 4X4 with the air ride suspension system. I have been experiences problems with the rear dropping. My local mechanic told me that the compressor was probably allowing it to leak off. I finally made the decision to replace the compressor. Yet that did not fix my problem. Let me also say that I hear the compressor running often while I am driving. I does not run constantly but often. While travelling with a lot of luggage in the back, the Check Suspension light came on. I also recently went to have the front end aligned and I was told that they couldn't get it perfect since the back end kept dropping. I HAVE had the bags checked for leaks. Meaning that by a mechanic they have been sprayed down with soapy water which showed nothing. WHAT DO I DO NOW? Someone please help me!
  • Well... Most likely it may be the air shocks goin bad. Ive just bought my 99 expidition a few months ago. When i went shopping for one i was advised not to get on after the year 99 if i didnt have the money to have the shocks repaired. The socks on these newer trucks now come equipt with air shocks. These air shocks on these trucks have a common tendency to go out and cause the truck to drop or just lower down more than usual. Either all around the truck or just in the front or back. This is the reason why i opted to purchase the 99. It does not have air shocks.
  • I have a 2006 Expedition with an in dash 6 cd player. It's broke. It is loaded with 6 discs and when I hit the eject button it says "no cd". If I try to load it, it asks for the position then says "load error". I've tried resetting the fuse, holding the eject button for some time, and simultaneously holding the load and eject buttons together all to no avail. It sounds like it is trying to do something but mostly is just a bunch of whining. One last thing, I had to jumpstart the vehicle this morning. Could that have something to do with it?

It sounds like you've done all the tricks for getting the changer to work. There's one more but I can't really recommend it (or maybe you've done this already and that's why your Explorer wouldn't start this morning?):

"6. Against my better judgment, I pulled the same fuse again while it was powered on."

  • I had the key turned to the on position and pulled fuse 22. the radio went dead and I waited a few seconds (actually fumbled around with the fuse, dropped it etc) and put it back in. According to the manual, it is actually a fuse to the relay which operates the radio. I assume you meant with power to the radio and not the engine running right?

Right - probably with the ignition on to auxiliary or whatever.

Mind you, I haven't tried this myself, it's just what someone has posted about around here.
  • Tried it too. Nothing. Probably got a piece of Hubba Bubba in there or something!!!! Who knows. Looks like the dealership is going to get a little money from me (or my kid's piggy bank)!!!

    Thanks for the help though

If you have a local stereo shop, they may be cheaper than the dealer. It may be cheaper just to put an aftermarket unit in.

I have the same problem after being rear ended. I have found out the module for the system is under the rear bumper. Ford has replaced 3 modules and 3 sensors and when they test the system the modules or sensors fail. Their Tech's are stumped. They have ordered new test equipment for the vehicle. The Ford engineers are stumped too. I have noticed that before the system failed that I could go to the message center inputs and turn the system on and off but since it has failed I can't access this part of the message center. When the vehicle is placed in reverse, the message center states "check back-up aid. When ford fixes mine, I will let you know what they did. I think though that the dealer can turn on the system with their computers but it will cost you. I had my vehicle jump started and battery replaced and they charged me 50.00 to reset the climate controlled seats about 3 weeks later.
  • Thank you for this information, all good to know stuff. Please let me know how you make out with all this so I can try to fix mine. Mine is also doing the same thing, and there are no options in the message center to reset anything either, I've looked at that too. Frustrating!

When I was talking to the service tech. I asked him if Ford was having this same problem with other Expeditions and I was told no. The strange thing about that is he also said that there is a TSB from Ford to replace the module with a modified one. Maybe since there is a TSB. on this system, maybe Ford would replace the module in your vehicle for free. My vehicle only has 2 sensors installed in the rear bumper and the technician told me that my vehicle was an early model 2003 and that later 2003's and 2004's have 4 sensors..
  • I have a Ford Expedition 2006 4x4 and I'll explain something!

I had a part time whistle when I was driving at a minimum of 10Kmh... After a while I saw the mechanics and he said it was a vacuum problem. Ok up to know there is no link with your topics but there we are! I wanted to select the 4x4high and 4x4low and I was not able. I read your topic and from this one I check my fuses (2 fuses to check) So the mechanic saw the actuator on the right side.

So $143.00 Canadian for the piece and about 1Hour of labour.

Finally Thank you my friend and for the others look for it
  • Help! ...I had the exact same thing happen to my cd changer as you described after my Expedition wouldn't start and had to be jump started. Have tried disconnecting the battery for several minutes in hopes that it would somehow reset the computer and fix the problem. Just wanted to know what finally happened with your radio-did you get the problem fixed? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!
  • Hi There!

Looking for quidance to replacing a crankshaft sensor on my 2005 Expedition, recent light service at dealer indicated i have a "wet" sensor and it should be replaced. Figure it should be a slam dunk job (a little oil on the o-ring and replace), but don't have a manual or any guide for replacement, any assistance/guidance is appreciated in advance.
