So, I test drove an 05 pathfinder 4x2 tonight. I wanted to experience that 4.0 liter V6 that is going into the Frontier.

    Wow!

Like most Japanese engines, the juice is over 3000 rpms. The auto tranny I drove let me keep it in third gear so I could roll in and out of the power band. It being 5:30 in the afternoon, traffic did not allow a real test of the capabilities of the pathfinder. Nevertheless, that engine in the lighter Frontier will just sing!

    Some other impressions:

The instrument panel is beautiful at night. A subtle orange backlight is easy on the eyes and offers great feedback to the driver.

The leather wrapped steering wheel is excellent. Grippy bulges at the 10:30 and 2:30 positions. The sitting position was easy to adjust and visibility was great.

Being an LE pathfinder, it was loaded. Leather, DVD, bose sound system, sun roof. I know the Frontier will be more spartan, and probably less refined. According to the reviews though, the NVH in the Frontier is supposedly well dampened.

My appetite has been wetted now.

Can't wait to test drive my next truck!

    Come on Nissan!

Interestingly, when I got home after the test drive, a thick envelope from Toyota was in my mailbox. Inside was a full blown pair of brochures on the Tundra and Tacoma. Plus two nice additional, accessory brochures.

Nissan is behind the curve and Toyota is eating up potential customers.
  • I hate to say this because I love Nissan trucks, but no extended bed on the CC is a deal breaker for me. I guess it'll be a Tacoma, Colorado, or Dakota now. Any comments?
  • Correction ... it'll be a Tacoma. The Colorado and the Dakota don't have the extended bed on the CC either.
  • I have been test driving everything lately getting ready to buy a new truck. I am waiting for the Frontier (I was also told Dec 15th by two dealers.) The ride on the Tacoma was nice, but the fit-n-finish was not up to par and the engine noise I felt was excessive (although some say it is as quite as a Lexus, I guess a very cheap Lexus). I am hoping the Frontier has more to offer. I also drove the Pathfinder, the engine and drivetrain are outstanding (Toyota beware). Very quick acceleration (much better than the Tacoma, also the will be Frontier is lighter), I would expect a very lively truck. I hope they get this thing out there, there are some very good deals on '04 full size trucks right now.

My south florida nissan dealer called me today. He told me he received a letter from nissan informing them that the frontier has been delayed again until Jan 3, 2005

And it was being driven by this beautiful woman. I pulled along side of it on HWY-280, my Ranger whizzing to keep up with it. Just as I was trying to get the woman's attention, she nudged the accelerator and rocketed away from me.

No, no, come back! I was moaning.

Honey, honey, wake up. My wife was shaking me to awake from my dream.

    Nissan, this is getting serious.

Please roll those Frontiers out to the dealers! I can't take it anymore!!!

    :)

Kind of hard for the Frontier to compete when they don't have any units on the street.

Taco may warrent a serious look....

NISSAN keeps delaying the release of the frontiers while the competition ,the tacoma is winning truck of the year. Honda is comimg out with a crew cab mid size and Ford is redisgning the sport trac. Nissan is must be having some serious design problems that is draging its feet with there release. It is hard for me to beleive we do not have one person on this board that works at that plant that can leak out some details about WHAT IS GOING ON.

Yes I agree,I fear some problems with the truck must exist or it would have been released already. Another big problem is the dealers are clueless. What kind of company does not inform suppliers when a product will be available?I need a new vehicle by a certain date can I get one or not?Do I have to buy from a different Manufacturer? If Nissan could give a solid date I could make arrangements? The Tacoma is looking better everyday, much less hassles!
  • I agree. Does anyone have good or bad experiences adding aftermarket sunroofs? I like the Taco ok, but no sunroof, no leather. I was hoping for LE type amenities.

Anyone notice that it says in the above MT article that only trucks available for sale to the general public by Jan 1, 2005 are eligible?

Since the Fronty was a contestant, does that mean the Fronty has to be on lots in the next two weeks? Time will tell, but I can tell from numerous postings here and elsewhere, people are getting ansty!

I will wait and test drive the Taco vs. Fronty then make a decision...but the Taco is looking better every day the Fronty is not available!

Interested in reading that full article to find out why the Frontier lost out to the Tacoma. Also looking forward to comparing performance figures between the two.

    About time!

I would be amazed if the dealers actually have stock today though.

I can't believe sales people were saying, "oh, January or February on the Frontier".

Were they really not interested in giving us some hope to wait and decide???

    Thats even more amazing.

One thing about the Frontier though, and I'll cross drive the Taco against it, since MT named it Truck of the year, is that I have to deal with a Nissan dealership in order to purchase a Frontier.

In my experience, they are not the best at after sales service, nor is it a pleasant buying experience dealing with them.

I may just get a broker to negotiate between dealerships on my behalf. Its the one part of buying a car I hate, dealing with deceptive people.
  • Nissan dealers do not make it a pleasant experience. I bought a new Armada a year ago and they pulled out all the tricks and deceptions. And, of course, acted personally insulted when I suggested I get the truck at $1500 over invoice. My advice is to watch the paperwork like a hawk when it comes to signing. If I could buy a new nissan through a toyota dealership, I would.

Anyone have any thoughts on initial price for the Frontier? Will they try and get MSRP for awhile?

I was just at my local dealer (MA). They do not expect any Frontiers until the beginning of January at the earliest. None of the salespeople have even been trained on the Frontier yet. This same dealer had an allotment of Titans when they were first released, so I expect they probably will be in the first wave of arrivals for the Frontier as well.
  • hkingshkings Posts: 74
Millar, a few people have already reported being able to test drive one as of yesterday! Many dealers I talked to in the California area said they will be getting their first ones on Dec 23rd, this Thursday. In fact, I have one on hold that should be in by Dec. 31st. Sounds like your dealer might not be among the 1st to get them this time around. Just an FYI.
  • jjpeterjjpeter Posts: 230
I wonder which models will be the first to arrive at the dealers.

And I'm hoping you can "custom order" a Frontier with just the options you'd like.

I'm looking at a 4x2 silver King cab SE with the power package, Auto tranny, alloy wheels, spray in bed liner, bed track system, over the bed-rail protection and fog lamps.

Will that basically be an LE? I don't want leather, or the step up rail.

I bet the first units to the dealers will be optioned out 4x4 crew cabs. So, the wait for my configuration will be beyond next week or even January.

Would be really nice to be able to "build my own Frontier." I can dream...
  • hkingshkings Posts: 74
The 05 the dealer has on hold of rme is a fully loaded crew cab 4x4 with every option you can get from the factory. Im also getting it 3% under invoice because I have a Nissan VPP through family! WooHoo! It arrives Dec 31st... supposedly!

    Cant wait!
  • Are you in LA? What dealers have Frontiers? Thanks
  • jjpeterjjpeter Posts: 230
Do you truely want a Frontier before you have even driven one?

What if there is something you can't live with, like a lot engine noise coming through the fire wall? Or something with the interior, or whatever?

Even at 3% under invoice, a bad vehicle is not a good deal.

I think its great you will be the first one on the block - but having serial # 112 may have its distinctions...

I for one want to do some real comparisons before signing anything over, expecially my hard earned $.

    Hey JJPeter...

Just to answer some of your questions...

    1) I will definitely be test driving the Frontier this week when they hit lots before putting money down. In addition I will be testing the 05 Tacoma and 04 Titan 'again' back to back as those are the 3 trucks Im deciding between. If I do like the Frontier enough, I will test it again a few times before eventually testing out the one I want to purchase. I won't blindly throw money down on a truck I've never driven.

    2) If there is something I can't live with, then obviously I won't buy the truck. I will look at my other options, weigh the good and the bad, and see which one offers more good than bad regarding my wants and needs.

    3) I agree, even for free, a bad vehicle isn't worth the time (which is money) and headache of maintaining it or fixing it. Value only goes as far as what you get out of it. That's true with anything in life.

    4) I'm not looking to be #1 on the block, I'm looking for a truck that has everything I want in a pickup. So far, on paper the 05 Frontier fits all my wants and needs, the Tacoma doesn't. The Titan fits it all too but is bigger than my needs and wants at this point in time. If the Frontier test drives anything like the Titan minus the size I'll be a buyer. I understand that there will always be issues with 1st year models, or redesigns, however all the trucks I'm interested in are either 1st year, or for the Titan, a 2nd year but also a brand new model entirely as of 04. Basically I'm at a point I need a truck ASAP and I need to jump in and hope that Nissan and Toyota will treat me well with few major problems.

    4) If you only knew how much real comparison, research and test drives I've done to this point on all 3 models, your head would spin. Just ask my girlfriend, she is about to slap me sideways from me talking about my truck research the past 3 months! :) Sorry for this long response, but long story short, I need a truck and as long as the drive of the new 05 Frontier betters my 01 Frontier, it will be a no brainer for me as I was somewhat disappointed in the new 05 Tacoma, and I don't need the size of the Titan.

Hope this answers some of your questions :)
  • HKings,

Your post is sort of scary because it hits my situation perfectly. Have driven an 04 Titan several times and love it except for parking it and having it take up most of the garage. I have looked at the Tacomas and like them, but just something that I can't put my finger on that holds me back on those. The Frontier sounds like a good option but I would really like to see and drive one. There is a great 04 Titan that I can get a great deal on but not the size is an issue. Anyway, just know there is another out there with about the same issues/situation as you. Good luck.
  • I am in the same situation as you two. I want to drive the Frontier, because right now I am leaning toward the Titan. I really didn't want to get a fullsized truck, I am not doing heavy hauling or towing. The Taco board is starting to worry me. There appears to be some small issues showing up. Loose bolts, skid plate that may need recall, the composit bed broke, other rattles that can't be found. I have driven Taco's, each one I drive seems to be a little different. Some have been very quiet, others not. You can feel the road through the steering wheel. I have always heard Toyota has such good manufacturing, but these issues have me concerned. Plus, there are somehing missing on the Taco that makes me slow to fork over the cash. I hope the Frontier hits the spot, if it doesn't I am going with the Titan (still like the Tundra, but it is really long and parking it is a nightmare).

May as well sit tight and let the holiday's happen and forget about seeing any frontiers before Christmas.

Starting in January this board will be jumping.

    Merry Christmas everyone!
