Thats a very good deal. I leased one in SD, the MSRP is 23114, total drive off of $3,150 (2500 cap red) for $220 a month including taxes, so about the same as yours and I worked on this for 2 weeks.

bought an 09 sportwagen SE for $22000 + TTL. seems like a good deal. anyway when it came to talk about the extended service plan dealer wanted $2400 for the 7yr/100,000mile warranty.... is that crazy high or is it smokin' reefer high??!!! what is invoice/cost on these service plans??
    :confuse:

I got quoted $1804 for 5 year, 100k. For that kind of money, I can afford to do the repairs myself if needed. Not sure why it is so high. Should be around 1k. More reasonable. Perhaps VW doesn't have much confidence in its own product, or, more to the point, its a cash cow for all makers of cars.

For that kind of money, I will take my chances and find a good mechanic that works on diesels.

Extended service plans are cost regulated by the government in most states. Extended service plans are expensive, but VW also requires alot more specialty tools, computers, etc....also parts on VW are high. I see service bills every day that are 2-5K and trust me, they wish they had the warranty. The Longer the term of the warranty, the more the cost, for example, the 5yr 100K is less than the 7yr 100K by about 300-500 Hope that helps. Also, the prices you were quoted seem accurate compared to what i see daily. Nobody is making a ton of money off of you at those prices. :)

Sorry... only in very few states are they regulated, as far as cost.. Florida comes to mind..

They may fall under your state's insurance regulations, but very few states regulate the prices. In most states, you can negotiate the price, just like any other part of the deal.

I will agree that most VW owners wish they had an extended warranty.. :surprise:

Did you just order it or have you already picked it up? Curious because wondering what you think of new pano roof? looks gorgeous and must make car feel spacious. Wondering about road noise? Do you carry gear on top, e.g. skis, bike, cargo box? Also, you live in FL, what about heat or sunshine concerns with the larger sunroof and mesh covering? I've only ever had the harder cover on past vehicles to use and it does provide significant noise reduction and protection from sun and heat. Thanks.

My parents ordered a new jetta tdi last month from a houston dealer for MSRP minus a measly hundred bucks, and with no added "dealer fees". Although this seems like an ok deal if you consider some dealers are trying to add a mark-up (though none in houston did as soon as we told them our dealer wasn't), i can't think of paying msrp as a good deal at any point. i want to buy one for myself, but i will wait, with the economy like it is i think they will HAVE to start discounting eventually. maybe it's a matter of pride more than anything but i refuse to pay msrp on any vehicle!

Also, they told me they can't order the loyalty edition jetta tdi. Why the heck not??? if they are ordering it from scratch, why can't they make a loyalty one?

The "Loyalty Edition" was a limited run, introductory special. Production stopped sometime in late June, and thus you can't "order" one - either they're still around on a dealer lot [highly unlikely], or they're gone. It's not a conspiracy.

Hi, am in the DFW Texas area, but willing to travel.

First, any idea of whether the bump from SE to SEL is worth it? My daughter will be buying her first VW (automatic of course, with Ipod adaptor, OF COURSE)

She likes the leatherette, and would prefer power seats, but not a huge deal. Sun roof is just okay with her.

Any dealerships I should point towards as being no hassle & honest? Any price I might be able to shoot for?

    Thanks

VW North Scottsdale (AZ) is great. ask for warren.

    vwscottsdale.com

    bought SE - great deal!
MDI nav system has AUX to hook up iPod, and USB drive, great set up and better options versus straight iPod adapter. great deal and so pleasant to deal with. no hassle. they'll give you best price right at the beginning.

    good luck!

Grrr... Are all car dealerships adding on to the MSRP for the Jetta TDI?

The dealership in Bellingham, WA wants full MSRP plus $1500 "market adjustment".

Here's an e-mail I received when I asked about the market adjustment. What a load of [non-permissible content removed].

Market adjustment is an amount we add onto the MSRP and we do this because the TDI's are in high demand and limited supply. Other dealers are marking up their TDI's from $2k to $4+ above MSRP. The TDI's hold their value extremely well. Prime example is my customer who was on our waiting list for 1 year for a 2009 Jetta Wagon TDI. He was the first one on the list and bought our first Jetta Wagon TDI, manual transmission. After 2 weeks of owning it he decided he really had to have an automatic so his daughter could drive it too. He traded it in for what he paid (MSRP + $1,500) and we turned around and sold it again for even more. It was on the lot for 1 week.

Are you interested in our 2009 Jetta TDI Sedan? Would you like to come in to see it?

I want to be polite but these dealers are a bunch of (_fill in with your own expletive!_) crooks. And the whole thing about "other dealers" is another line of crap... aren't you lucky this guy is only going to rip you off for $1500!

Just be patient - it's supply and demand and VW dealers are in the sweet spot (unlike most other dealers) with the TDI. But eventually, supply will catch up with demand and "Market Adjustment" will be a thing of the past.

    Good luck!

I have found at least two dealers in our area [Portland OR] that are selling the TDI sedans at MSRP. Every dealer here has multiple sedans on the lot. With that in mind, I would never pay more than MSRP for a TDI sedan.

I too have heard many anecdotal accounts of dealer pricing in Seattle. Use the VW website to explore dealer alternatives up and down the West Coast. You will not have any trouble finding someone who will sell you a Jetta TDI sedan at MSRP.

The wagon is another story - too much demand, too little production.

    Hi all!
I am planning to buy my first car at the end of the month and was wondering if anyone has any idea of how much one can reasonably negotiate the price? I was quoted (by email) a price of $19,000 for a 2009 Jetta S w auto transmission, "cold weather package" and iPod hookup. Do you think I can get them down to $15,000 or would that just be laughable (and perhaps rude)? :confuse: :confuse:

Very well. What would you think would be a reasonable price? And what do you base that on?

Based on Edmund's pricing, 2.5S Jetta Auto (without the package, I don't have those numbers in front of me), at MSRP with destination is $19,090, and $18,445 invoice.

Offering $15,000 is $3,500 below invoice, which would most likely get you laughed/thrown out of the dealership.

I would personally try to negotiate by offering something that's invoice or invoice - 1000 and go from there. I am also in the market to lease a 09 Jetta S manual, and would be interested in seeing what others are able to get (in terms of amount below invoice).

    Thanks,

Just look over the last few months of transactions on this thread. Before the drop off in sales 09s were going for above invoice...now I'm sure they are going for under invoice. You can offer 15k but I'm positive they wouldn't bite. VW is one of the few manufacturers that sales have been holding up pretty good. If you can get it for $17000-$17500 I think you would be doing well.

Went to a local dealer - Fred Beans Volkswagon of Devon PA and drove and loved it.
Told the nice salesman wasn't quite ready to make a decision as I had a few more cars to drive, then would be making mind up this week or next. Was offered SE, automatic, with Ipod adapter and mats (lol) for $21,317. Seems like a semi decent deal from the start - no negotiating yet on my part.

    thoughts??

Also - Should I be conserned about the questionable reliability or is that a myth?

    cheers all.....

Thank you all for your input! I still haven't bought one, but I'm pretty sure it will be a Jetta S, either at the end of Dec or the end of Jan (or should I wait for the President's Day sales? Are they really good? I've never really paid attention to them before..)

Picked my Wolfsburg up for @ the same pen.

Awesome car........and I thought all they had was the so-so 5 banger or demo GLI that I drove the day earlier. Salesman told me he sold the SE-SEL?

"Got a few in, theyre back there"......4 Wolfs.....picked the one I wanted, wow, what a great car. And less than the 5 banger I drove!!

Absolutely, the Wolfsburg is by far the best value on the VW lot. I just bought one 2 weeks ago, 6 spd manual, spoiler negotiated $21,530 including all dealer fees and DMV, not including tax. I then qualified for $1,000 owner loyalty credit so final sale price $20,530, which I was very pleased about.

Does anybody know if the $1,000 Loyalty Credit is still available on the Jetta? If I am not wrong, the Loyalty Credit expired on Dec 1st, 2008. Does anyone know if the incentive is still available for the month of December?

    Thanks a lot!

Tested a new Jetta and love the handling. But did anyone else notice that the center console is right on your leg when you have your foot on the gas? Don't know if I could handle this for long distances. Also, has anyone cross shopped the new Mazda 6i against the Jetta? How would you compare the handling? Thank you.
  • Options
    ral2167ral2167 Member Posts: 791
yes--the center console is really tight--worst thing about the jetta i've found after driving it for 2+ years-- right knee room is poor.
  • Options
    cascadejimcascadejim Member Posts: 11
that's interesting, i've never considered right knee room and I haven't really noticed any difference in that regard going from an '06 Avalon to an '09 Jetta, but it's still new to me so perhaps i will in the future. The only thing I have trouble with is the tiny center storage area.

As for the Mazda 6i I never test drove it but sat in it during an auto show and I hated the interior it felt a bit cheap to me and definitely uncomfortable.

Thanks for answering my previous question. One more item: With taxes included, the S is about $2,700 less than the SE. The car would be a daily driver to work with one or two 1,200 mile round trips to visit family every year. I don't need the sunroof as it cuts down on headroom and things like ipod, satellite radio are of little or no value to me (sorry for being a Luddite!).

Baed on the above, is there any reason to get the SE? Are S versions as easy to find? Thanks again.

Traded a midsize car in on my Wolf and actually find it easier to get in and out of, they wanted you to know you were driving a bigger car. And it couldnt turn as sharply as my VW.

As for legroom, I'm 6'....no problems here.

Hi, I just bought a 2009 Jetta S with MT for $16,500.00. First they quoted me the MSRP 17,990, no thanks, 17,000, still no thanks. Inquired through the internet and got another price of 16,750. Called the first dealer and got 16,500, DONE DEAL! 15,000 seems a bit low, given what I've read, but good luck. It seems to be a buyer's market.
    BTW, Love the car!!!
  • Options
    BilKopBilKop Member Posts: 12
Thank you for that info, skidzam! And congratulations! So it's not impossible to get them to go a tad lower. I'm amazed they quoted you 16,500 over the phone! Would you mind telling me where in the US you are? I still haven't even found the time to do a test drive, but once the Christmas craziness is over, I'm going. Glad to hear you like the car too. I'm still trying to decide between a Jetta and a Civic. I guess the test drive and price will have to be the deciding factors.

BTW, does anybody have any input on whether one is more likely to get a good deal at the end of December or at the end of January? I can buy a car now, but I can also wait another month, I'm not in a hurry.

    skidzamskidzam Member Posts: 2
Hi BilKop! I guess I should be a little more specific. The first dealer who quoted me 17,990 and then 17,000, did so while I was at the dealership. I already had a test drive. The third quote was from the internet, on a website that offers car deals through my employer. After that quote, I called the first dealer and they beat the internet price by 250.00.
I live in New York on Long Island.
As far as choosing between a Jetta or a Civic, I can only give you my humble opinion. I have owned/leased many cars over my adult life: Peugeot x2, Sable, Camry, BMW 525, Lexus, Mitsubishi Galant, Altima and Hyundai and honestly, NOTHING DRIVES LIKE A GERMAN CAR!!
I drove a Volkswagen Golf (turbodiesel) in Italy and was so impressed, I swore my next car would be a VW. For the price, you can't beat the handling and pep.
Good luck, do your homework and I'm sure you'll come to the right decision.
    Merry Christmas!

lol skidzam, I think you and I may have bidded the price up. I am located in Queens NY and have been doing the exact same model search as you in the past week.

I got quoted for Edmund's invoice price from the place I test drove the car (17346 including dest. chg). They refused to go lower.

I then called a few places, and got a quote from the dealer on Sunrise Hwy (the one closer to the city) for around $16,416 which translates into about $252/month on a 39month/10k lease, but the dealer stressed I had to call back right away on the voicemail he left me. I called back 1 day later and left a msg but the guy never called back.

The original dealer right by my apartment refused to go below invoice, saying that I probably got a "lowball bs offer".

Called up a few more dealers (one of the benefits of being in NY, there are over 10 VW dealers w/in 50 mile radius), ended up with another dealer in the Bronx area (did a search, they had about 4 of the cars I wanted), and was able to get a lease with no money down (literally a sign and drive) for $245/month, which translates to about $16,200, or $1150 below the invoice. Picking up the car at the end of the month.

It is definitely possible to get the dealership to go below invoice during this time because car sales are plummeting like a rock. Just to give another example, I was able to get another dealer (Audi) to lease the A4 Premium (base model with metallic paint) for $1500 below invoice so that they matched my current 2007 A4's monthly payment of $450.

I test drove the GTI, Jetta SE, Jetta S manual (08), Jetta Wolfsburg, Civic LX and the Mazda 3, and loved the GTI the most. It was extremely responsive. But the car would have put me over the $300/month mark and I was targeting in the mid $200s. I could not believe that the car was so much more fun to drive than the A4 despite having the same engine. I really wanted to get either the A4 Premium + or a BMW 335xi, but that would have put me over the $500/month payment for sure, and given the way the economy is, I decided to go with the more budget conscious Jetta S.

The Jetta S definitely has better handling compared to Civic or Mazda 3 and even the S comes with many features as standard. I am actually kind of glad that it only has hub caps and not alloy rims. Just had my Audi A4 inspection and found out that the two tiny scratches on the right side rims (front right and back right) will cost me $120 each on excess wear and tear, so hub caps are fine as long as they don't crack.. :)

Good luck to others looking for a car, definitely do be bashful in asking for a better deal with the dealerships!

Thank you both skidzam and atsenb for all your info and encouragement! I do want to like the VW when I test drive, because it has so many features I want that are not even optional on the Civic, so I'm really glad to hear both your (positive) opinions on that. I'll let you all know what happens. Happy Holidays! :)

I took a test drive on a 2009 Jetta TDI sedan today. The car drove very well. One could not tell that it has a diesel engine by driving it. While VW has factory incentives on other Jetta models they do not have any on the TDI. Is it likely that VW will offer any incentives in the purchase of the Jetta TDI?

I am in the market for a 09 VW jetta S Auto with the 450 option of 16 alloys OR a 2009 jetta SE Auto. I have been emailing all my area dealers for the best price possible. I have recieved a email from a local dealer stating 1,500 BELOW invoice, I am still confirming this to make sure there is no hidden print. According to my figures these are the prices I am going to show the dealer this week.

2009 Jetta S auto 17,343 with dest 16,695 no dest.

2009 Jetta SE auto 18,040 with dest 17,390 no dest.

that's odd- there's nothing tight about the right knee area for me in my jetta tdi... and i thought it was built the same way as the regular jetta's? i dont see how anyone- even very tall would have a lack of leg room- it's very spacious. is the jetta built differently than the jetta tdi?

well, if you look at the right edge of the bottom seat cushion, and extend that edge to where the center console is, you will see that it runs NOT into the left edge of the console, but the console itself. thus the right knee tends to rest up against the console, unless the seat is back far enough.

also, when shifting gears, it doesnt feel as silky smooth as I thought a german car should feel...sometimes it feels more friction going into from 1st to 2nd gear. wonder if it'll get better after driving it for a few months.
