I did a search here and didn't find this so I'll guess we haven't seen this one before (though the search function seems broken as it only delivers one page of actual results while showing numerous pages available, so who knows). Supposedly Portland OR, around 1962.

Today is the 41st anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. In the past I have posted a few pics, here's one from Spokane. Knowing this region, some of these cars might still be out there:

I visited when I was a kid (before Johnson Ridge was built), and hiked Spirit Lake in 1995. I visited again a couple years ago, it's a lot greener now. Nature isn't taking a break.

Growing up in eastern WA in the 80s, I remember the ash was still everywhere several years after the event.

When new, that was a sharp color of blue on that unloved 69 Olds Delta 88.

I had just left Eastern Washington (Richland) in January of that year. Seeing pictures of the area, including places that I knew well, was surreal.

In fact, it went off while I was in the air on a flight from LA to Seattle to see my family. I got to become very familiar with one gate area of the airport in Vancouver BC (needless to say, we were unexpected. There were no customs agents on duty so we couldn't explore).

In that Spokane pic, I notice all of the cars are some shade of blue.

I believe this is the same spot today, in a slowly but steadily gentrifying neighborhood

Moses Lake, 1980, should zoom fine (I clearly remember shopping at that K-Mart when I was a kid):

I wonder if the '50s bungalow in the background is the home of the owner of this early 1960s used car lot.

    Wow, a 1959.5 Ford Galaxie.
Introduced mid season. Note the Thunderbird C pillar.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,097
I've never heard of the 59 Galaxie being a mid year model.

Also note the oldest car is parked at the house.

My favorite of the group is the 60 Chevy convertible though I would prefer a different color. The front end of the 59 Ford is not my favorite, even the 58 Olds looks better to me and it was no beauty.

Celica convertible. No clue what year. Around a 2000? If it’s a stick, I’d love to have it!

I like it, except for the tilted main headlights. Had they been flat, it would have an Alpine look:

Background kind of upper right I swear I see a 63 Valiant convertible, top up. Maybe a Ford Taunus 20M in front of it. Heavy French lineup as expected, a very nationalistic market especially then.
  • sdasda Member Posts: 6,936
Does France still require headlamps with yellow illumination? I seem to remember the reason for that is yellow illumination produced less glare and produced better lighting in poor weather conditions such as fog or rain.

    The reason is more "French":
What many of our American readers probably do not know is that until 1993 all cars in France were required to have yellow headlights. This tradition started during World War II so that the French civilian cars would stand out form enemy vehicles. The Government enacted a law on the 3rd of November, 1936 stating that all vehicles put into production in 1937 are required to have yellow headlights. The French being who they are, didn't abandon these headlights until 1993 when forced by the European Unions conformity standards. Today, it is illegal to drive in France with yellow headlights unless your car was first registered before 1993.

Yes, I see that and think you're correct.

I'm curious about the little silver sportscar pretty much immediately beyond the Renault 4. Another tiny car in light blue to the left of it.

Thanks for the explanation. We lived just outside of Paris from Feb 75 to Aug 76 when we returned to the US. I was a freshman and sophmore in HS.

There's an odd little silver car to the left of a blue VW in center pic. I think it could be a Honda S600

Couple of Brits in amongst the Parisians
Mk II Cortina obscuring the Honda headlight and a Triumph 1300 in that space below the Valiant & Taunus
To the left the Honda and one back there is a white Opel Kadett Caravan ( wagon) and just in front of that is a tiny black car - I think it may be something like a Vespa 400 - they were made in France and it doesn't look like a Mini or a Fiat.

A nice Falcon Woody wagon and a '63 Plymouth four door. A '64-ish Ford Fairlane along rail. Looks like rear window of a white "shoebox" Ford in front of the Falcon.

I generally don’t care for Falcons, I like that Falcon Squire. Good color combination and no blind spots in that baby. Not sure if you could get the V8 yet, that would be best.

I think maybe a 260 could have been ordered in the Squire?
I think the white car could be a 51-52 Chevy, Fairlane is also a 63.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 16,762
True calling of a Corvair wagon? I thought about this when I saw the Falcon above; I think these were contemporary competitors, so it seems fitting....

That hood ornament on the red car with the dual chrome pieces that merge to a single front piece has to be a giveaway. But I can't recall what car had a hood oranament that looked like that.

The 1958 hood ornament has edges that rise upward at the windshield end. Little wings?

The 1959 is a closer match.

Saab 900 Turbo, SPG wheels so I assume a SPG car, Euro model on Swedish plates apparently, I will guess around 1985. Pretty cool car.
