I didn't know the Maxima was sold outside of the USA, or hasn't been for some time anyway. A huge amount of sales have to be to fleets these days.

That's a custom street rod that uses a '65 Pontiac 2+2 body shell and interior components but not much else. LS7 power, custom frame and suspension, wheels, brakes, etc. It's a beautiful custom but it's not a Pontiac. Really doesn't belong on here.

Look how clean the styling and even smaller looking the 64 Olds convertible and 62 Buick look compared to the 58 Mercury and other older cars.

For a few years in the late 50s the Dauphine was a hot seller (4 doors to the VW's 2)

Car on the left of the first row next to sign is the Dauphine's predecessor the Renault 4CV

The blue Yank tank behind the 4CV could be a Hudson "Step-down".

That brief flash of time when the Dauphine was big enough to warrant a custom sign like that.

I get a sense something is going on in the leftmost lane, car behind the apparent Ford panel van (which is behind the Dodge) appears to maybe have rear-ended it, and the Dodge maybe was hit too. I notice traffic is going around it, and people in the Chevy are looking.

To the right on the other lane we have about a 48 Pontiac two door

To the left in the Dauphine lot what is that car above the rear of the Renault 750?
I thought a DeSoto but can't make it out

On the left, I think that's the same Renault 4CV that appears in the prior color shot. Has anyone mentioned the 1957 Bel Air coming towards camera?

I think the Pontiac is a 49-52 style. You are right on the DeSoto, looks like a 53.

Paris, must be around 1960, cool pic - these look like Dinky toys (should zoom well):

They do look like Dinkys! i count 5 2CVs and 4 Citroen DSs. White over black sedan looks like a Simca Aronde.

Looks like good traffic discipline considering no painted lanes!

In Paris there are a couple of interesting ones - especially some of the taxis

Bottom left is a black & red Simca taxi - and this would inevitably have been the economy model if bought as a taxi - which would be the Ariane.

The Ariane was a base model Simca Versailles - a development of the French Ford Vedette model - but instead of the former Vedette engine - a Ford V8 - it had the 1300 engine of the SImca Aronde..

They weren't all taxis though - that blue car in the bottom left corner is another in normal colours so it may be an actual Versailles or an Ariane and there was even an Ariane 8 which was the equivalent of say a Vauxhall Cresta

There is also an ancient taxi just next to the coach.
Renault and Citroen both made old models for the taxi trade before the war and kept on selling them well into the 50s - in much the same way that the pre war Austins in Britain evolved into the old familiar London Taxi in the same period, I suppose.

    @andys120

That lane discipline is only an illusion - there was probably a cacophony of horns as an accompaniment

First time I was in Paris we tried to cross a side road near the exit from a roundabout off the Place de Concorde just as the lights changed and about seven lanes of traffic raced each other to funnel into the bottleneck of the street we were in...

You rarely see an un-dented car in Paris

I've found this picture of a Citroen 7UA but they also had an 11UA which was a six window version though I can't find a picture of it. the pictured car might be an 11UA

They were rear wheel drive based on light commercial chassis but used the engines similar to the Traction Avante (fwd) models

Production ended in 1939 but they were apparently common until the end of the fifties and also had a diesel engine option from 1937

    Details supplied from Citroenet.org.uk

Amazingly the engine for that old girl was therefore the same one as that used in the first series of Citroen DS which was powered by the Traction Avant unit...

Interesting that there's only a single Dauphine in that Paris photo. The Dauphine may have been the most popular French car ever sold in the USA.

I remain unconvinced that the "Paris" photo is real. Not only do the vehicles look like Dinkys or other miniature models, but look at the number of identical models painted in exactly the same color scheme.

It was named after Pininfarina Design's founder, Giovanni Battista Farina. "Pinin" was a nickname
and Giovanni Battista is Is Italian for "John the Baptist". Fulgencio Batista, the ex-Cuban dictator spelled his name with three Ts. You probably knew that and were just joking ;)

To the right of the Fiat 600 is a Hillman Minx. Behind the Fiat gives me a 58 GM product vibe. Something obscure to the right of the GMC truck in the front row, too.

With so many imports, has to be California, right?
