That's it. Looks like it could've come out of Darth Vader's TIE fighter!

Edmunds member RSHolland owned one that made him swear off VWs forever.

VW is funny, no? They have both extremes. Haters with a bad previous experience, and rabidly loyal fans.

There seems to be no middle ground among the VW owners I've met.

Funny thing, back in the day my grandparents were thinking of a new car, and I recommended that 1990 style Passat. My young eyes thought it was so modern and German looking, and it was fairly priced. They also didn't have the horrible rep yet. Good thing they actually bought a Taurus - even though those can have issues, theirs was OK. No doubt the Passat would have been on a tow truck all the time.

I'd roll the dice on a US built new Passat, but many of the others scare me.

The new one got dulled down. Doesn't do anything for me, though a TDI is always interesting.

Dull, but handsome enough, and a loaded TDi for ~30K isn't the worst value out there. Probably the most reliable Passat ever, too, as it is shaped for this market.

With the Accord averaging 30mpg per CR and the Altima 31mpg, the appeal of a diesel (36mpg) diminishes for me, since diesel costs way more than gas around here. You break-even on fuel cost.

And both of those cost a lot less, and have better tech. Passat doesn't even have a backup cam.

    Wagon's also gone.

The only real advantage is the excellent range, and Altima is still close.

Diesel makes sense for larger heavy vehicles. Will be a tough sell on smaller lighter things, as gasoline engine technology improves and mileage shoots up.

I suspect actual transaction prices on a loaded Passat vs EX-L aren't too far off. But neither are the fuel costs, and the latter will have lower maintenance I am sure.

How'd you manage that? When I tried to post the 6th Emotorcon, I got a pop-up that essentially said "enough already". :confuse: :D
