    Daf, a freakshow Dutch car
  • jaserbjaserb Member Posts: 820
This one was a DAF 33, to be precise.
    Mostly known for:
    1. Dutchness
    2. unusual automatic transmission.

I can't imagine using one as a daily driver, but there ya go.

I can't imagine using one as a daily driver, but there ya go.

Heck lots of people used to use VW Bugs, Dauphines, Minxes and the like as daily transport, I was one of 'em ('65 VW Bug). It helps if you are young/single.

The "unusual A/T" in the DAF was the newly in vogue CVT which DAF pioneered, it was then known as a Van Doorne transmission after it's Dutch inventor. That era (early-mid '60s) featured many small cars that were more technically advanced than their larger brethren which were mostly not much advanced from the Model A era, as Shifty likes to
    remind us.

    Peugeot 505...exact version unsure Sti?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,380
Yes, it's a 505, dunno if it's an STi. The 505 was the last Puegeot imported in the US.

This one is characterized by CAR as "horrible to drive, own, look at", it seems sorta cute to me.=>image

Do you get them in CDN? I thought the modernized Samauri was the Sidekick/Tracker.

No Jimny in Canada...Canadian imports tend to be more or less the same as US, give or take a model variant here and there (echo hatch, etc)

The Jimny sure looks like a Samurai....maybe it's not even modernized

If I remember correctly, that rear end denotes a different model of Rolls, but I can't, for the life of me remember what it is.

    LOL, what was the tip-off.

Let's leave it up for a while and see if anyone can tell us just what the name of this Roller was. Hint: note the number of doors.

    Corniche coupe.

Your spelling is off Mike, it's the Camargue, named,IIRC, for a marshy area in Southern France famous for wild horses(?),

Shifty AFAIK Corniches only came in convertible form, am I mistaken?

  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
I would have said a Jag 420 (not 420G) which is its "twin" just with a slightly different grill, but yes it is a Daimler Sovereign. Good job.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,380
It looks like a Maserati Sebring but there's no Trident in the grille. ?You can see a Mangusta in the background as well as a Cobra so perhaps it's a DeTomaso Longchamps.

Nope. This one is a tough one (at least to me it was) as it is pretty obscure. The flanks (ignoring the C-pillar) look a little Jag XJ's-ish but it isn't a Jag.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
From the A-pillar back, it looks like a Ferrari 400, but the nose is certainly not Ferrari-esqe.

    Lamborghini of some sort?
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
Styled by Italians yes, but not a Lambo or Ferrari.
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
One more hint: It is powered by a Chevy motor. 350ci if I remember correctly.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,380
Hmmm, styled by Italians and Chevy power it's almost got to be an Iso but it looks like a Monteverdi with Frua bodywork, I just dunno which.

Ya gotta go some to find an Italian from that era that I don't know. :confuse:

I didn't even know of the car until I read about it yesterday in one of my European classic car magazines. I know very little of Italian cars, but maybe this hint would help:

It wasn't marketed under this name, but it was built by - Stanguellini
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Really? That's interesting. Mostly Stanguellini made this little open wheel Fiat-powered racers.

It's a little heavy-handed but not too bad. Way better than that ugly Daimler.
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
    It is the Momo Mirage.

Feel free to do what I did and go "Huh?".

When I get home I can post some basic facts about the car and the man behind it (where the Momo name comes from) if you guys want. I didn't get a chance to finish the article yesterday, but I figured I'd post a picture of it (tough to find!) and see if you guys knew of it. I think they only made about 5 of them.

Here's it is on the cover of Road and Track from 1971. (I'd have it just show here, but it's a pretty long photo).

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,380
 Now that I see it, I remember the R&T cover, obviously the car didn't make an impression on me. Which is odd because I usually grok Italian GTs of that kind, even if they had Chevy power.

Don't forget to let us know who the coachbuilder was, I'm betting on Carrozzeria
    Frua. Good one, Kev.

I can tell it's a Kaiser but not sure of the model. A Traveler? A Dragon?

Wouldn't you like to have a car called a Dragon? Kaiser had the most boring cars but the best names...Dragon, Manhattan, Virginian....

...According to "Classic and Sports Car", dissapointed with an Aston Martin DBS he had just driven, Peter Kalikow of New York had a conversation with a friend, Alfred Momo, about how a car like that should drive. Momo ran a Jaguar garage in NYC. Kalikow wants a car built with Momo helping out.

Reallllll short of it is they end up getting Stanguellini to produce the chassis (with a Jag Mk2 front suspension I learned), Frua to do the body with styling by Gene Garfinkle (U.S.) who had done some GM concept cars. Engine provided by GM. (In the article they say 5 liter but the specs in the same article show 5.7. One would have to assume a 350ci).

What did it in is right when Frua doubled the cost and doubled it again (ouch) Stanguellini doubled the cost of the chassis........oh and they now had to buy their Chevy motors through the dealer rather than direct, increasing the price even more. He decided to kill it after 5 cars because he couldn't sell them at this new price.

(This is from the April 2005 magazine with a Ferrari 308 and Acura NSX on the cover)

Nope, not a Pontiac at all but the resemblance in profile to the white LeMans I posted before is an important clue.
