Ford Five Hundred/Mercury Montego Maintenance & Repair

  • I heard that a recall (?) or something to that effect was out for rear brakes & rotors on the Montego and Ford 500. Anyone have any info regarding this?
  • we bought a used 06' 500 limited about 3 weeks ago and the drivers side heated seat has stopped working. The lights on the switch still light up and the passenger side works fine. I checked the fuse (but it appears both sides are on the same fuse so that wouldn't be it anyway). It is out of warranty. I'm fairly handy with a meter and would like to do some troubleshooting myself before I bring it in to a dealer but I have no idea where to start? Has anyone had any problems with theirs? Any idea where I could find a wiring diagram for the car??

    thanks!!
  • Just call your Mercury dealer, just had new rear brakes put in for free fro Ford, theres a bulletin out,I dont have it avail. but its a no brainer. The brakes are made of Organic material from a distributer and are wearing quick so Fords replacing them at no cost to consumer. Just plan to hang aroun,it will take them a couple of hours to change brakes and turn the rotors.
  • Have an 05 Ford 500 LTD. The first LOF I had the dash compartment lid replaced.
Had a recall early on for a gas tank strap.
Then at about 20,000 they replaced the brake pads when in for LOF & tire rotation.

All in all it's been a pleasant experience. Nothing major and nothing that wasn't covered by warranty.

The dealer told me yesterday that the problem was my transmission and they could not fix it-but they could replace it- for $5,000.

Have other owners had similar problems with the transmission in the five hundred?

Also- is replacing the transmission my only option?

    Other ideas??
  • I have a 2006 Five Hundred w/ 63,000 miles(company vehicle for sales-mostly local territory.) I have noticed this same "bucking" behavior, but only after traveling apx 2-3 hrs at speeds over 60mph(interstate travel.) One dealership told me they found nothing on the diagnostic test so I left & it drove fine for another month of local, low-speed travel. Then on my next long distance trip, the same thing happens after apx 2 1/2 hrs on the road. It "bucks", then loses speed(pressing the gas peddle does nothing),then the steering locks up as it is losing power. The battery & check engine light comes on at the very end. It will re-crank but then the same thing happens. A different Ford dealsership told me it was a clogged fuel filter & replaced that and sent me on my way. Then after driving 3 hrs, the same thing happened. I coasted in to a 3rd Ford dealership & that is where I am now. I was wondering if you ever found out what your problem was?? This car was great until it hit 50K miles, I have sense had a new transmission installed & this has been the next problem.
    Any advice???

I just got my car back after a week at Aamco. They tested just about everything and determined it was NOT the transmission as the dealer had suggested.

They tested the computer and it was fine. Since they re-installed the computer, they could not replicate the problem(s).

I am hoping it was a connection issue. So far-so good.

Let me know how your issue turns out.
  • THey kept my car for 2 days & told me it was the Fuel Pump. I recently ran in to a friend w/ a Mercury & she had the same issue & hers was the fuel pump as well so I am hoping it is repaired for good. It has been fine all day but I have only done local travel. Good luck.
fyi- at 50K miles I had to have the transmission replaced so I really cant wait to get rid of this car!!!! but it does ride well when all is ok and I love all of the storage.

The fuel pump might be a good idea except for the bucking when braking. Hopefully, all is good for now.

My 2005 500 had this problem which was caused by a sticking valve in the transmission which had to be replaced. I had an extended warranty and my Ford dealer covered the deductible to keep me happy. This is a known problem - something to do with the transmission fluid.

Can you tell me if this problem happed again and what they did?
I was just told they reprogrammed the board and the problem was back in a day now I am being told I need to replace the whole dash cluster. Which is 500.00 for a car that is 3 years old.

Since they reprogrammed the computer, and are now telling you it's the dashboard - they clearly do not know what the problem is and are guessing at your expenses. If they are sure the dashboard is the problem have them give them you money back if it doesn't work. FYI - I had this very same issue with a Ford Contour. NO ONE (even some of the best diagnostic shops in my area) could figure out what it was.

I got rid of the car.

Did you have the same problem, ie vibrating while braking and when accelerating at high speed?

Also, do you have any other details about the fix? If I was going to relay this info. to my transmission guy-which valve would I refer him to?

    Thanks.

My 2005 Ford 500 down shifts for no reason at highway speed. At 70+ on cruise control, in traffic when you tap the brake to slow when you touch the accelerator again, lightly, the car down shifts really hard with a loud sound. The Ford technician who rode with me to trouble shoot was really impressed with how hard it is. They say I need a new valve block for $ 1,000 parts and labor. Any one else have this happen.

How do you release the piston on the rear clipper so that the pads can be replaced? I have replace the front and all is fine. The emergency brake may be the problem.

  • I have a 2006 500 Limited 2wd with 60,000 miles.

Often when I come out of park or neutral I feel and hear a "clunk". If the car was rear wheel drive I would swear it had bad u-joints.

Is there an adjustment that can be done or does the software need to be reflashed?

It was reflashed about a year ago under warranty for something else already.

    Thanks.
  • I have a 2007 and feel/hear the same clunk. Curious as well

Looking for all information on 05 ford five hundreds transmission problems.
  • I also have thbucking issue when accelerating rapidly and when braking. I has Aamco check it out on their diagnostic machine in May. They determined that the transmission was fine.

I have been driving it since. By driving carefully, I can minimize the problem.
  • Sounds like a loose wire harness connector or connection.
  • I recently purchased a used 06 Montego with 10k miles. I am enjoying the car but have noticed a minor problem, also noted in an earlier post. The trunk release does not always completely "let go." About 50% of the time I'll have to attempt the release 2-3 times before it works. Any solution/suggestion?

Also, are there any aftermarket replacements for the dorky stick antenna on the car? I noticed the '08 Taurus/Sable does not have a stick antenna.
  • My 2005 five hundred started vibrating at 40 mph with 50,000 miles on Pirelli P6 tires. Most noticeable in the stearing and floorpan. Dealer said to check it out again after new tires were installed, the Pirellis were cupping. Replaced with Goodyear Assurance Comfortread M+S. Still vibrates at 40 MPH. Very annoying. Tires otherwise are quiet and comfortable compared to the Pirellis.
Also have the dreaded bubble in the lid in the center of the dash.
  • I have a '06 Five Hundred. Last week after I went to wash it, about 15 minutes later the Gas Cap Warning Light came on. I checked the manual and it said the gas cap may be loose and to check it. I did and the light remained on. Yesterday, I purchased a new gas cap from the dealership hoping that the light would go off and the service technician said to give it about 10-20 miles time for the computer to reset itself. I've gone at least that far and the light still remains on. The technician said it isn't likely there is a vacuum leak, so I'm giving it a couple more days before I take the car in to get it checked out.

    Any ideas?

    Lorrie :confuse:
