I have an '88 528e automatic w/153k miles, bought about 8 months ago. In general, I like the car, considering its age and purchase price. Thing is, a couple months after I bought it, the trans started to slip, badly. I took it in to a local shop, had the fluid, filter and gasket changed, and the car shifted/behaved perfectly for a few months. Well, now it's doing the same thing: car will barely move under its own power, and takes forever to shift (I'm not driving it currently). Any suggestions (I'm hoping it doesn't need a new trans, because that will certainly cost more than the car is worth)?

You need to find a shop that is familiar with the ZF 4HP22 transmission. There's a specific diagnostic procedure which should pinpoint the problem. It's far from rocket science, but the tech needs to know what he's doing. Some helpful general information on the 4HP22 can be found here.

  • larrynguyen and bmw5sin ,Did you guys found out any solutions yet?
  • My 2007 BMW 530i Sport recently began shifting irregularly between 4 and 5 gear, particularly in the Sport mode, but occasionally in the non sport mode. At 105K miles, is this something that may indicate a problem on the horizon? Thanks for any responses that may be helpful.
