  • have a '99 ML 320 and I would like to install the original in dash phone unit. From reading my Mercedes Owners manual as well as the original car brochure I understand, that every M-Class is factory prepared for portable cell phone and In-dash control unit system. Here are my questions:
     
    How difficult is to install the unit? Has anyone done it?
    Does the installation has to be performed by Mercedes dealer in order to have the phone integrated with the radio and the sound system or anything else I am not aware of?
    How do I activate the phone since I already have a local service provider? Is this done by a dealer and do I have to pay an additional fee for the service?
    I also understand that I need an additional hand held unit needed to program the In-dash unit in my car. What else I need to purchase in order to have this unit fully operational?

    Ah!! Good old Drew. What ever happened to him. If I remember he had a spat with Edmunds. Used to be host on this board.

    ML's are so predictable. The problems are standard in all their cars. Those of you who have replaced the driver side power window switch raise their hands.

    My brake light and driver side low beam lamp has died too. What a coincidence??? I just got a rear brake lamp from pep boys and am looking for a more powerfull low beam bulb. I think the original one is too bad and drive with my fogs on most of the time. Since the fogs are kind of focussed on to the road it never troubles drivers in the opposite lant.

  • Since the warranty ran out in May, I've spent nearly $1500 maintaining this POS. My lease runs out at the end of Apr. Fortunately, I have a Subaru to drive. I think I'm gonna park this thing, until I turn it it, and get another Subaru!!

  • The unit will cost you $1500 + plus installation. If I were you, I wouldn't waste $ on the phone. Buy yourself a hand-free unit that support bluetooth(wireless).

    You have a 99 ML. I wouldn't put $ into 99 ML. Use that $ to buy a newer model.

    so where is the "engineering" in this, i've had enough problems with mine that what i plan to do is drive till it drops and donate it then get a toyota, I WILL NEVER BUY/LEASE ANOTHER MB PRODUCT there are just too many better more reliable choice. jd powers says that mb has had the fastest drop in quality recorded geeeeeeeee

  • Hi all,

    Got the vehicle back last week from the shop - the car has 17k miles on it in 20 mths. Issues fixed :

    1) Engine Coolant Leaking - 3rd Attempt to fix. Seems the Coolant Cap was not holding pressure. They had put a new cap in on the last try as well. Hopefully, its fixed and will not reoccur.

    2) The Left Headlight Low Beam Bulb wnet out - replaced the bulb. My 99 RX300 hasn't had a bulb replaced in the last 5 years !!

    3) Rear Cupholder fell off - replaced with a new one. Hopefully will not break soon.

    4) Severe Rubber rubbing noise coming from Rt side of Dashboard - took off the whole dash and re-insulated the area with felt. Noise is gone for now - keeping fingers crossed.

    5) Front Rt door lock making loud squeaking noise on unlocking - the lock assembly and actuator had to be replaced.

    This is the 6th time I had to take the car for some repair in 20 mths. Will definitely sell it before the warranty runs out. This car is the most expensive mistake I have made so far - what a piece of crap for $55k. The CEO of MBZ - some Jurgen S guy, was named the WORST CEO in 2003 by Business Week. No wonder the quality sucks !!!

    That would be a major design defect and Shremps head should roll.

    Please don't make sarcastic comments. And yes, Jurgen S should get fired - not because of a burned out bulb but because of the total lack of Quality Control while building this vehicle. He should get fired for : Failed Fuel Pump, Failed Aspirator Motor, Leaking Coolant, Failed Purge Valve, Bad Door locks, squeaky dashboard, etc etc. The list of problems just goes on and on. I fail to understand why is MBZ hell bent on screwing up the reputation built over 100 years. By cutting corners and using low quality parts - they are going to ruin their brand - which is their cash cow ! If the Japanese Auto makers can keep improving on quality - why the hell can't Mercedes ?? Anyway, hope you are happy with your vehicle. Have a nice day !!

    what is left for us, overpriced low quality electrical nightmares. they dropped the ball and we are moving on

    Self-inflicted embarrassments of analysis and a dearth of any meaningful information--nothing distinguishing about these few repetitive and discordant personal opinions. Just a discordant few among thousands of satisfied MB owners; disgruntled malcontents who thrill in demonstrating their pitiful need to maintain dubious credentials as the holder of an intelligent opinion. Just a stagnant love affair with the swamp of their stagnant personal and irrelevant musings. Every car maker gets these kinds of posts. Big deal.

    I had the distinct pleasure of working for nearly 20 years in a highly regarded computer design and manufacturing business. The company easily attracted top talent from top schools. The company was so good that it did little marketing
    of itself or its products - hot products and hot
    support brought the company to over $10B in annual
    sales. We made stupid mistakes every day but had
    the brains to recover, and learn from the mistakes. As time went on the mistakes came faster and we lost the ability to recover. What once was a mistake that was exposed to one customer, became exposed to many customers. The company is gone now, with the good parts being
    acquired by other businesses.

    M-B may be facing the same latter-day issues. Making mistakes that are clearly evident to the
    marketplace. Something changed in the corporate
    attitude that allowed the continuation of production on vehicles that had known problems
    that are visible to the customer. That same attitude ripples down to the local dealerships and local service advisors. My advisor is a likeable person but isn't service-orientated; I ask questions several times before I get a decent response, I get crappy loaner cars, I pick up
    a dirty car, and there is never an apology. When I take our Lexus in, it's a whole other world, even though both dealerships are owned by the same family.
    What's wrong at M-B? Start with fixing the attitude and most other things will fall into place.

    I changed my airfilter and noticed a round electronic piece bwtween the filter and the connection hose? if this is it, can i replace the "mass airflow meter" myself?? it's causing the check engine lite to come on. if i can do it myself and buy the part online i can save myself $120 (local service dealer quoted $320 to fix it)

    excuse me but i'm not "bashing" MB,... as far as smarts, i must have some to keep my MB buying job, i bought MB to last me 10 years as other long time MB people said (especially the diesel owners). MB let me down, and i can afford anything and i can also afford NOT to buy MB. I hate to see such a great vehicle and company (potential) slide away. Do you think i bought MB to bash it?, i had faith in their history of quality, safety and service and am lost to MB"s future because it let me down (and by jd powers many others). I wanted to have a great MB product, proud to drive one, a great experience, but MB is slipping, and why is that.....sorry for the opinion and passion. next time anyone asks for "an opinion" on the ownership experience i'll just paste in the business week article and say "no"
  • Our 02 ML-320 has now been in the shop for 61 straight days (it arrived the week before Thanksgiving) for accelerator hesitation and a transmission that downshifts at will. This is the third time for the two problems...the first time was a week and the second time two weeks.

    Our dealer has said MB folks from both Houston and San Fran have been to fix...but here we sit.

    Have contacted (in writing) MBUSA both the second and third time...all we have gotten back is a form letter.

    Does anyone have any other ideas on how to deal with MBUSA? We did sent a Texas Lemon Law notice back when it went in November...and another last week.
  • It seems I stumbled on a way to make my ML un/lock from more 20 yards away - as opposed to the more typical 8 feet. Rather than trying to press the remote in one's pocket or in your hand by your side, simply raise it over your head and it works much better! Must be a line of sight thing or something, but it sure does help...

    I have a 2002 ML500 with Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires. Is there a certain way to install the tires - is there a direction of rotation which needs to be taken into account when installing the tire on the wheel ? I noticed that there is a small (D> arrow symbol before the DUNLOP on the sidewall - should the tire be installed such that the forward motion of the vehicle is in the direction of this symbol arrow ? The 2 right tires on my ML are setup this way but the 2 on the left are such that when the care goes forward the arrow points reverse ? Are my 2 left tires installed incorrectly ?

    They're not directional. To rotate, you're supposed to move the rears directly ahead to the front, and cross the fronts to the rear.
