Dodge Dakota - Quad Cab

  • Getting close to purchase, Dodge is offering $4,500 off '03's, do all dealers take this right off the M.S.R.P and call it thier final offer? Seems to me they should give you their best offer first AND THEN subtract manufacturer's incentive. Would someone explain this to me. thanks-JD

Thanks for the help Ferous. Code was P0442, Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak). Gas cap is on, but I'll replace that first.
  • you are getting the shaft..Wow, I just checked and there is a $4,500 manufacturer to customer incentive..I bought my new truck in Aug and the incentive was only $3k. Anyway, the $4,500 should come off the invoice price, or there abouts. If the dealer is stating the $4,500 is just off MSRP, then tell him to go f*** himself and go to an honest dealer. Don't pay more than a few hundred over invoive..before the incentive. You should actually be able to get the truck for invoice minus the $4,500. Great Deal!!

    Good luck
  • Klaus and Dusty, thanks for the replies.

I had concerns due to the fact the 4.7 has only 5,300 miles on it and the exhaust temperatures have clearly discoloured one complete section of the muffler where one of the baffled chambers starts and ends with no discolouring in the other chambers. The discolouration is at the forward 1/3 section of the muffler closest to the O2 sensors. I have heard stories about the 4.7 overheating...

I'm sure Dusty is correct regarding activation of the MIL light if the ECM discovered the level of exhaust temperature was out of acceptable range. I just hope the muffler will handle the heat build up and not wear out prematurely.
  • I bought my 03 Quad this summer. Dodge was offering $3,000 cash to the customer in my region. I ordered a pricing report off of the internet for $20. I priced my options and came out with a total invoice price of $22,200 for the truck I wanted. Dealers want to work from the MSRP. I let them play the game but worked from my price and wouldn't budge. It really threw the salesman for a loop as many buyers don't do their homework, so he called in the sales manager to soften me up. Manager kidded around about how I was beating up on the poor salesman (LOL). I stuck to my guns. I ended up getting some of the dealer holdback and ended up signing for $19,000. They made a few bucks and I saved a few bucks and I wasn't trying to get it for nothing. We all gotta eat :-)

This scenario has been reported before on Dakotas. the fuel cap is a likely suspect, but if it checks out okay look for split or cracked rubber hoses coming from the top of the fuel tank. This is probably more common than a failed gas cap.

    Best of luck,
  • My White/Silver '03 SLT Plus Quad Cab was delivered today. And since you all had input, I feel obliged to tell you how I made out. I paid 20.6K, including taxes. I got the 26H package with all available options except leather and CD changer. Like one of you said, I believe I saved a little, and they probably made a little. If I new how, I would post a picture on this forum. It looks good, even from Iraq. My wife is keeping the battery charged until I get home and says it drives like a dream. Thank you all for your help. JD

Congratulations! I hope you are pleased with the new machine, and if you have gotten one as well assembled as mine you will be very, very happy with it.

Now get your butt out of Iraq and come home and drive that Dakota around! My son is with A-Company 1-37 AR 2nd Platoon, 1st BDE 1 AD, Unit 93035 in Baghdad. Please bring him home with you.

    Best regards,
  • In your opinions, is it worth the extra 770 bucks. I have always believed that if no problems within 3 years, than it's probably a good unit and with good maintenance it will most likely hold up. Any thoughts? JD

Well, I don't think the first three years is always the dictate. In some cases, either by design weakness, component quality issues, or faulty assembly, things aren't going to break until after three years.

This really depends on your mindset. If you consider it insurance, then I think it might be for you.

I once advised a friend not to buy the extended warranty and he didn't. He had to put a fair amount of money into that car. We don't speak.

I once advised a friend to buy the extra warranty. He never had a moments trouble with that car and he ended up feeling that he spent $1000 for nothing. We don't speak, either.

Do what you feel is right for you.

    Best regards,
  • Thanks Dusty. By the way as long as your boy stays in that M1A1 he'll be fine. It's the wheeled vehicles and recently choppers that are vulnerable. And if he will fit in my ruck I will bring him home with me. JD

My final deal: Invoice-holdback+ approx. 300 including sales tax, all financed at 4.9 through Chrysler. OR to compare apples to apples, without tax or financing factored in, I was just under a thousand below invoice and 4700 below sticker.

My truck: 04 Dakota Quad Cab Sport Plus, 4x4, 4.7, 5 speed auto, 26c with power windows and locks, cruise, tilt steering wheel, sliding rear window, 60/40 split bench, and 245/70 tires. All wrapped in the new Atlantic Blue. Couldn't find 03s near me like I wanted and I know if the 05 is restyled same as the 04 Durango Id hate it so I figured it was time to stop talking constantly about a new truck and go in on the last of the month and just do the deal.

Oh my god I still can't believe when Im driving this truck how far trucks have come since my little rwd reg cab 95 Ranger was built. IT handles as tight as any car I've ever been in and the acceleration is UNBELIEVABLE for a 4thousand pound plus 4x4. Pulling off the lot I gave it the same kind of gas I normally have to give on my little 4-banger Ranger to get up to traffic speed and before I knew it I had gone from being at a stand still to moving FASTER than the approaching cars as I merged in.

Interior is very quiet and comfortable. Everything feels tight and well engineered. Only criticism is one side of bumper sits a couple inches lower than the other, but I have not yet decided if it's annoying enough for me to let the dealer mess with it.

On the radio: CAn't believe Dodge would put a radio in a 2004 truck without a scan function.

Back seats: VERY spacious. On a 3 hour drive to DC my Mom was able to sleep comfortably. She absolutely fell in love with big blue when I first pulled into her driveway. Her first reaction: "We have to go on a road trip. NOW."

Have already put ventshades on all four doors and a bug deflector. A bed liner, bed extender, and soft cover are probably next. I see little reason to spring for locking storage in the bed when I now have an actual full interior where I can store the fragile stuff.
And I have Ram's head cutouts on my tail lights but they're the cheap type that don't fit too great and I don't think I like them much. Can anybody point me to cheap places to get the full rams head tail light covers that cover the whole tail light and blend with the rest of the body?
  • Looking at putting a AutoVent Shade bug deflector on my QC, but the website shows only years 97-01, Does this same one fit my '03? And how difficult are they to install?. thanks, JD
  • Bought a new 2001 on 08/00. 4x4, 4.7, auto, 3.55, bright white quad. Have 50,302 miles. No problems so far other than 1 battery at about 28K replaced by the dealer, and the cassette/stereo went out at 40K. Dealer said the extended warranty did not cover it so I went to the local stereo store for a Kenwood CD player that I like better. The thing that really astounds me is that I'm still on my stock mopar brakes...Had a recent inspection and they are close but still a few miles on them.....and I heard nothing but bad things about them....I even tow a 3000Lb bass boat 3 or 4 times a year with no trailor brakes and my wife'6 4300lb horse trailor with trailor brakes once or twice a year. Looking foward to the next 50K... Really am enjoying the truck!

The premature battery failure seems somewhat common. Most of the 2001 and up Dakota owners that I know have not experienced it, but I have talked to a couple with 2000s that had to replace them early.

I don't know anyone that has had short brake rotor life on 2001s and up. Before 2001 I talked to a number of Dakota owners that said they had repeated rotor problems. Of course, they were all getting aftermarket replacements, so its unfair to blame Chrysler for that. There are four Dakotas in my parking lot that are 2001 and up (two 2001s, one 2002, and mine, a 2003) and none of us have touched the brakes yet. In my office building its the Explorer and GM fullsize pickup guys that currently appear to be having the most problems with rotors.

    Best regards,
  • I just received in the mail 11/7/03 a "recall" notice for my 2001 4.7l 5 speed quad. The wire harness near the clutch pedal may need to be re-installed or replaced. Clutch pedal actuation and close wire harness proximity may cause chafing to the harness. Intermittent electrical may cause weird things to happen with radio/lights/horn/wipers etc.. When I get home I'll quote the letter and re-post.. Ger

Anybody still having problems with brake noise on 2003 Dakotas? When I bought my Quad Cab in July they said that they were looking into the issue (makes an intermittent noise when backing) and they did issue a TSB a month or so ago. I got the repair done but the noise never went away. I have an appointment 11/12 for them to look at it again.

Is this a symptom that only affects Quad versions or those with 4-wheel ABS? I have talked to quite a few Dakota owners and haven't heard this as a problem from any of them.

Tell us again why this is a "problem"????

Does your truck stop when you push on the brake pedal?

My Dak exibits all kinds of brake squeels when I stop... I ignore it because I know it is not a concern of any kind. It is , after all, a TRUCK!

Geez, these types of responses caused me to stop using these boards, not even to lurk. My mistake for coming back....
