I have been reading the posts here for the last
few weeks and have been very impressed.
As a Silo owner, I knew the day would come when I
would have the need to post. So here I am !!
Mine is a 2000 Silo "GLS" (loaded, except for the
Ent. Sys)purchased in May 2000. VERY pleased so
far. Roughly 9400 miles to date. I have had two
unexpected trips the dealer.
First one for liftgate adjustment because there
was a thudding noise every time I hit a bump from the real right side. Problem still exists, however
minimized since I stuffed rags in the jack
compartment and had the rear right bench seat
replaced because the leather had a rip (warranty covered not to mention dealer came to
the house to replace it).
Second problem occurred around the same time.
Rear right tire had a flat. Dealer sent someone to have the tire picked up. Turns out I had a nail.
Tire plugged and back on the vehicle.
From day one I have NOT been pleased with these
Generals. I have noticed in the "2001" models (GLS
and Premiere), GM is using Goodyear's.
Admittedly, not the best, however, much improved
from the current brand.
Question which I want to throw out to the floor
is: Do you think we (2000 owners) have a way of
getting GM to replace the Generals for Goodyear's.If so, at what cost?
Thanks in Advance,
Robert.
P.S. We went on a cross-country journey...
details to follow soon.
Dealer installed wiring harness, computer and still can not get car to run.
As of November 7 they still have car (22 days at the dealer for repair, 3 in my house). They are going to try to put in another wire harness.
I have requested the dealer take the car back. He says he can not since its been titled. Called 1-800- olds number a number of times and requested they take it back. They refuse saying thats what warranty is for. Dealer spoke to his rep and says they refuse to take it back.
Under state law 30 days in shop in first 12 months or 18,000 miles is a lemon.
What a great van!!!
problems with this van. We bought the van 6 months ago. I was a lease vehicle with 19,000 on it. So far, no problems. The engine is a good performer. Power is always there when I need it. And it still gets good MPG.
The four doors makes it very convenient for my wife and I to strap our three and one year old into the car seats. We usually leave the very back seats folded up for tons of cargo space.
We have had 2 Chrysler minivans in the past. We bought them because they were cheap in comparison.
Both had the 3.0L v6. Both of them used. Just o.k. acceleration. The tranny was going out in the first one. The second one, started to make a terrible lifter noise when started up. Most people could here us coming, before they saw us.
Traded both of them in.
My other car is a 94 Cavalier with 150,000 miles on it. Still going strong. I bought another GM product because of the luck that I have had with my Cavalier.
Took car back in on Tuesday Nov 13 with 363 miles.
I have had this great car in the SHOP FOR REPAIRS 25 DAYS in my first 30 days of ownership.
PLEASE SOMEBODY TAKE THIS CAR TO THE LEMONADE STAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Help?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
dad into opt'ing for a luxo-sedan or a SUV - with
that being said my dad came home with a 2000 Silo
GL today. Since I'm a 19 year old college student,
you can guess that I'm not exactly crazy about
mini-vans (unless it's a party on wheels
;-) ). His first response was to get me to drive
it...so I took it on the freeway and gunned it (I
don't think my dad liked that). I was impressed by
the pick-up it hit 70 relatively easy and I didn't
notice any lag while I approached it. Also,
wind/road was relatively low and tolerable. I was
also relatively impressed by the stereo, RDS, good
bottom-end for the front speakers (altho lacking
highs-I'm an audiophile, look at my name). Alot of
other good things I liked but I'm going to try and
keep this short.
I had a few questions/concerns that I hoped
anybody could help me on.
While going into the on-ramp to the freeway it was
alittle rough, with each bump I sometimes heard
some sort of squeaking noise. Later when I got off
and made a turn onto a main road I also ran into
some more squeaking, it seems to occur when the
road is alittle rough. Has anybody else ran into
the same problem?
The silo is used @ 22k, he paid 18.5k for it, can
anybody provide any insight to if this was a good
deal or not?
Thanks in advance,
John
It has 6,500 miles on it today, I've changed the oil three times (once at 1,000 miles and then each 3,000 miles since). We've done a lot of mountain and highway driving and the van's been great. The entertainment system is great at keeping the kids occupied when there's nothing they want to see on the road. The wireless headphones are a god-send! The only problem I had was when I put in a bad CD and it "broke" the player. The dealer ordered a new one and replaced it while I was there in about an hour. The seat warmers in this year's model are great. You never know you "need" something until someone invents it! I do have a couple of gripes, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying this van again. My gripes--I ordered the third row captains chairs--when they're up, they impede rear view mirror vision through the van. I usually have them put down. The new cup holders in the front stack--when you have anything in them you can't reach the buttons for your rear wiper, fog lights, etc.--minor, but annoying. The chrome wheels--don't buy them if you live in a city that gets lots of snow. The stuff they put on the road along with all the dirt makes them dirty all the time. Unless I'm scrubbing them all the time, they look like the alloys! Anyway, I traded in my 1997 GLS with 75,000 miles for this one. I'm glad I did. We'll just see if we all end up with orphan vehicles!

My current lease is up and I have taken a look at a Silo. Premiere as a replacement. I am starting to discuss leasing, but the rates I am getting quoted ($598/36 mos., $555/48 mos.) seem quite high. Any comments on whether this is in line with others experiences?
Thanks,
SST
I leased my Premiere in August. The sticker was around $34,500; our price was slightly over $31,000. We traded in our previous van and put down about $3,000 in equity on the 2001. Our lease is 36 months and it's $498/month. We live in Colorado and, at the time, GM was giving a $500 rebate for leasing. If you're putting zero down, these numbers might be in line. I'd be sure to shop them to a credit union, if you're able, to see if you can get a better rate than the dealer.

I called Olds dealer for service on these (I'm off work like everybody else this week), and the service advisor about fainted when he found out that neither had been serviced yet! He says the coolant turns gray and breaks down well before 100K, and transmissions can't run over 50K between servicing, even with Dexron III.
My miles aren't the "severe conditions" mentioned in the owner's manual (mostly hours on end on the interstate).
I've just done oil changes every 5K (about every 6 weeks), and brakes, rotors, and tires at 40K.
Am I missing something?

Any thoughts or experiences on this???
Not only that, but in the "RIP Oldsmobile" topic Olds is giving dealers and salesmen a lot of incentives to move any Olds. The 5 year/60K warranties are nice, too.
Patience is a virtue.
I'm thinking it's maybe a bad strut, but the possibility of it being something more costly (eg. transaxle or transmission) is upsetting. It's intermittent, and doesn't necessarily happen whenever you hit a bump. When I had it in for an oil change at the dealer (~6000 miles) I asked them to look for it. They "didn't find anything". Could you let me know your findings? Thanks.

Don't do it. The van is a basic hollow box with gadgets. The road noise, the drafts the handling suggest nothing other than a cargo van.
Because I leased it we are stuck for another 18 months, but I can't wait to get out of this junk.
Anyone remeotley considering a GM van either the Chevy or Pontaic, they are all the same think again.
Just my opinion.
Any other advice regarding the Silhouette or its siblings? We didn't want to go back to Dodge for fear of tranny problems.
Good luck with your decision!

letsgetmikey: Check out the following site: http://www.auto-parts-direct.com/ It came up with a dealer that will sell the filter for $57.41
So far all is well after one week. My wife and I like just about everything, handling, style, performance, features, and especially the 5yr/60k warranty. I do not like poor access to third row seats. Did I mention I still have 5 kids at home. No evidence of the dreaded rear leakage yet but it/s only been thru the car wash once and all the precipitation we have received here in Indianapolis since I've had the van has been in the solid form. Where the hell is that ground hog anyway?
I Will keep you posted.
Only problems I have had are the electric sliding door (had problems at first with it not working, dealer worked on it and finally got it fixed. Recently had a short problem again during very cold weather, but no more problems since then) The security system kept going off (I don't think there was a problem, except it being overly sensitive. Semi trucks going by our house on the highway set it off) Onstar phone went out (promptly replaced by dealer) and last summer at the beginning of our 2 week vacation the CD player quit (the first day of vacation, Darn!!!) All these problems have been taken care of by the dealership. Other than these minor problems, we love our vans! I don't think Mom & Dad have had any problems.
Readers might find it interesting that my Silhouette has a full vinyl roof which looks very nice. I own a small funeral home, and had a hearse conversion done to this vehicle. Full vinyl roof with removable rear side matching vinyl window covers with decorative chrome bar on them. Removable wood grain formica floor with casket rollers & holders. I drive the car as my personal car, and for funerals for lead/clergy/flower car now, and after the van has many miles on, it will sit in the garage set up as a hearse. Looks very classy with vinyl top & chrome rocker panels. It is burgandy with gold package, vinyl top matches paint exactly. Most people think it looks really sharp, but can't quite put their finger on why.
My warranty will be up this year, so I will watch this board for any problems that should be fixed. Anything I should have checked before warranty ends?
Only other problem just occured. The driver's set heat stopped working. The dealer has order a new heating element for the seat. I'll post again if the problem recurs.
Other than that, still loving the van. I find the traction control excellent. I have this hill by my house, that, when covered with snow, the Silo has no problem getting up. My 94 Jimmy in 4wd cannot make it up the hill. Go figure...
A few of the changes: other that the slightly different front end (which is an improvement), that great American obession: cupholders. The front ones pull out of the dash, and the second row is built into the side of the captains chairs.
Somebody must have gotten the message about how easily the old style cupholders could break. Just paid $140 to have both sets fixed on my wife's 97 Silo.
Second row captains chairs are standard. The bench is no longer available here. Can't tell you much about the third row fold away seat, since mine has the split bench back there.
The instrument cluster is a bit different, not necessarily better, but different. Radio Data System is kind of neat.
OnStar is standard also. Still trying to figure it out.

My question is. Can we, just by visual inspection, tell that we have the towing package? If so, how to identify these things?
Our van came with a plastic bag contains the wire harness that is not installed. Shouldn't this wire hardness be installed by the dealer before delivery?
Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

Our van has the compressor and automatic leveling, these options are standard for premiere. Thanks for the comment Brian #199.
