I leased a 98 Silo. I have had many problems. Three recalls, Bad lights, broken tach, broken gas gauge, and grinding brakes. Service department took care of everything but the brakes. Now GM is saying it is a wear item and will not cover the problem. After many attempts, the local service manager stated that I should have had the brakes adjusted every 3,000 miles with each oil change. That is not in the service manual. Has anyone else incurred this problem with brakes on their silo. Please let me know. GM stated there is no tech service bulletin.

I too have recently noticed the occasional headlight flicker. My best guess is that it is related to the voltage regulator shifting modes. After reading the various posts regarding intermittent headlight/compass display flicker, I feel it is probably normal for this vehicle. As for the compressor, your van has automatic load leveling. The compressor will kick in when you turn the ignition to "On" to ensure the the van is level. It should only stay on for a few seconds and is normal.

I have posted before about our new olds silo. I really love this van. No problems except for a check engine light that keeps coming on and the service department can't or will not figure out why. The code I get from calling Onstar is p0440 which is an emissions problem. They have had the car 6 days out of the 21 that I have owned it..I've called customer service and they said they would look into it.

    Hello gang,

I have been reading the posts here for the last
few weeks and have been very impressed.
As a Silo owner, I knew the day would come when I
would have the need to post. So here I am !!

Mine is a 2000 Silo "GLS" (loaded, except for the
Ent. Sys)purchased in May 2000. VERY pleased so
far. Roughly 9400 miles to date. I have had two
    unexpected trips the dealer.
First one for liftgate adjustment because there
was a thudding noise every time I hit a bump from the real right side. Problem still exists, however
minimized since I stuffed rags in the jack
compartment and had the rear right bench seat
replaced because the leather had a rip (warranty covered not to mention dealer came to
    the house to replace it).
Second problem occurred around the same time.
Rear right tire had a flat. Dealer sent someone to have the tire picked up. Turns out I had a nail.
Tire plugged and back on the vehicle.

From day one I have NOT been pleased with these
Generals. I have noticed in the "2001" models (GLS
and Premiere), GM is using Goodyear's.
Admittedly, not the best, however, much improved
    from the current brand.
Question which I want to throw out to the floor
is: Do you think we (2000 owners) have a way of
getting GM to replace the Generals for Goodyear's.If so, at what cost?

    Thanks in Advance,

    Robert.
    P.S. We went on a cross-country journey...
    details to follow soon.

Took delivery of car with 113 miles on 10/14. Tuesday 10/17 with 285 miles had to have towed to dealer. Wire harness melted.
Dealer installed wiring harness, computer and still can not get car to run.
As of November 7 they still have car (22 days at the dealer for repair, 3 in my house). They are going to try to put in another wire harness.
I have requested the dealer take the car back. He says he can not since its been titled. Called 1-800- olds number a number of times and requested they take it back. They refuse saying thats what warranty is for. Dealer spoke to his rep and says they refuse to take it back.
Under state law 30 days in shop in first 12 months or 18,000 miles is a lemon.
    What a great van!!!

My van has been in the shop 5 times in the last 6 weeks. The engine makes a noise, kinda like spark knocking. Very loud sometimes, also seems to bog down when making this noise. The first time I took it in the dealer had a small black cap sitting on my paper work, said they found it in my engine compartment........OK?? They have adjusted the washer line...didn't work.....They have all heard the noise.. I'm worried about long term damage. Can't wait to get rid of this one!!!!!!!

I am sorry to here that many people are having
problems with this van. We bought the van 6 months ago. I was a lease vehicle with 19,000 on it. So far, no problems. The engine is a good performer. Power is always there when I need it. And it still gets good MPG.
The four doors makes it very convenient for my wife and I to strap our three and one year old into the car seats. We usually leave the very back seats folded up for tons of cargo space.

We have had 2 Chrysler minivans in the past. We bought them because they were cheap in comparison.
Both had the 3.0L v6. Both of them used. Just o.k. acceleration. The tranny was going out in the first one. The second one, started to make a terrible lifter noise when started up. Most people could here us coming, before they saw us.
    Traded both of them in.

My other car is a 94 Cavalier with 150,000 miles on it. Still going strong. I bought another GM product because of the luck that I have had with my Cavalier.

Picked up my 2000 Premiere on Nov 10 after being towed Oct 17 with 285 miles on it. They replaced wire harness 2 times and new computer. Cost in excess of $2400 which was covered by the warranty. Service engine soon light came on driving home.
Took car back in on Tuesday Nov 13 with 363 miles.
I have had this great car in the SHOP FOR REPAIRS 25 DAYS in my first 30 days of ownership.
PLEASE SOMEBODY TAKE THIS CAR TO THE LEMONADE STAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got a used 98 Silo, and need to get the squeaks and groans coming from the left side door fixed. Does anyone know what to do to fix this problem. It makes me think the frame is twisting everytime you pull into a driveway, but it may just be a misaligned door. Other than that, the only problem is the steering wheel trim not tight enough.
    Help?

Today my 2000 Silo with 18000 miles was towed back to Oldsmobile - would not start then one by one the inside lights, radio went out until nothing worked. On the way back to dealer I looked back at the van while on the hook and the head lights came on. At the dealer the inside lights, radio, doors began working until I tried to start the van then everything aborted again. Sounds like my van has a wiring problem similar to the Still a Lemon post. I'll let you know how things turn out.

I read a post where someone had shown seat covers for placing car seats on so they don't damage the seats. We have a 2000 Silo, and would like some additonal info. Does the dealer carry these?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Purchased my 2000 GL silhouette (with rear AC/Heat, audio control, key less entry/security system) this october. Picked my van when it had 121 miles and now 515 miles on it. So far the van is great by the grace of God (if any of you guys don't like my phrase, sorry. I always put God's grace first). Me and my wife realy like the van. (By the way I believe I got the best deal -$23K and 0% financing)

Well it finally happened, I couldn't convince my
    dad into opt'ing for a luxo-sedan or a SUV - with
that being said my dad came home with a 2000 Silo
GL today. Since I'm a 19 year old college student,
you can guess that I'm not exactly crazy about
    mini-vans (unless it's a party on wheels
;-) ). His first response was to get me to drive
it...so I took it on the freeway and gunned it (I
don't think my dad liked that). I was impressed by
the pick-up it hit 70 relatively easy and I didn't
notice any lag while I approached it. Also,
wind/road was relatively low and tolerable. I was
also relatively impressed by the stereo, RDS, good
bottom-end for the front speakers (altho lacking
highs-I'm an audiophile, look at my name). Alot of
other good things I liked but I'm going to try and
    keep this short.

    I had a few questions/concerns that I hoped
    anybody could help me on.

While going into the on-ramp to the freeway it was
alittle rough, with each bump I sometimes heard
some sort of squeaking noise. Later when I got off
and made a turn onto a main road I also ran into
some more squeaking, it seems to occur when the
road is alittle rough. Has anybody else ran into
    the same problem?

The silo is used @ 22k, he paid 18.5k for it, can
anybody provide any insight to if this was a good
    deal or not?

    Thanks in advance,
    John

I haven't posted for a while, but just an update (since there's news today that GM may be dropping Oldsmobile as a division). We bought our 2001 Premiere on August 24 (we had ordered it in June).
It has 6,500 miles on it today, I've changed the oil three times (once at 1,000 miles and then each 3,000 miles since). We've done a lot of mountain and highway driving and the van's been great. The entertainment system is great at keeping the kids occupied when there's nothing they want to see on the road. The wireless headphones are a god-send! The only problem I had was when I put in a bad CD and it "broke" the player. The dealer ordered a new one and replaced it while I was there in about an hour. The seat warmers in this year's model are great. You never know you "need" something until someone invents it! I do have a couple of gripes, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying this van again. My gripes--I ordered the third row captains chairs--when they're up, they impede rear view mirror vision through the van. I usually have them put down. The new cup holders in the front stack--when you have anything in them you can't reach the buttons for your rear wiper, fog lights, etc.--minor, but annoying. The chrome wheels--don't buy them if you live in a city that gets lots of snow. The stuff they put on the road along with all the dirt makes them dirty all the time. Unless I'm scrubbing them all the time, they look like the alloys! Anyway, I traded in my 1997 GLS with 75,000 miles for this one. I'm glad I did. We'll just see if we all end up with orphan vehicles!

Very disappointed to hear that GM will be phasing out the Oldsmobile Div. We have a 2000 Olds GLS with about 9000 miles which was purchased March 27th. Very impressed with performance and have not had any problems other than a leak around the tailgate which was fixed. Have e-mailed the Oldsmobile Division about GM phasing out the division and suggested that perhaps GM should have put more money into advertising and marketing the Oldsmobile. Also, perhaps that they should have used some of the money they advertise for the Buick Div.through AARP Modern Maturity magazine and put to the Oldsmobile Div.

    All,

My current lease is up and I have taken a look at a Silo. Premiere as a replacement. I am starting to discuss leasing, but the rates I am getting quoted ($598/36 mos., $555/48 mos.) seem quite high. Any comments on whether this is in line with others experiences?

    Thanks,
    SST
  • kklotzkklotz Member Posts: 19
    SST,

I leased my Premiere in August. The sticker was around $34,500; our price was slightly over $31,000. We traded in our previous van and put down about $3,000 in equity on the 2001. Our lease is 36 months and it's $498/month. We live in Colorado and, at the time, GM was giving a $500 rebate for leasing. If you're putting zero down, these numbers might be in line. I'd be sure to shop them to a credit union, if you're able, to see if you can get a better rate than the dealer.

Last Friday I was informed by my lawyer to return my 98 Odds Van back to the Dealer that originally sold it to me. After almost a year and four transmissions CM bought it back. This Van was serviced originally by Rob's OLD & Chevolet in Marysville, Ohio. I can see when mechanical problems happens but the personal treatment I received from this Dealer was very negative and I was told there was nothing wrong. Another Dealer in Columbus Ohio did not agree and worked with me up the very last week I had the Van. If anyone else has had a bad experience with this Dealer please contact me and we can get surport from GM.
  • nelpitnelpit Member Posts: 1
Olds is giving an extra $1500 rebate if you already own or lease an Olds. That is in addition to a $1,000 Holiday rebate, and a $1,500 regular (2001 Silo) rebate. They are also throwing in a 50/50K bumper-to-bumper warranty. Not a bad time to lease a new van.
  • letsgetmikeyletsgetmikey Member Posts: 82
My 99 Silo is at 75K miles, and owners manual says 100K to transmission service and 150K (or 5 years) to coolant flush.

I called Olds dealer for service on these (I'm off work like everybody else this week), and the service advisor about fainted when he found out that neither had been serviced yet! He says the coolant turns gray and breaks down well before 100K, and transmissions can't run over 50K between servicing, even with Dexron III.

My miles aren't the "severe conditions" mentioned in the owner's manual (mostly hours on end on the interstate).

I've just done oil changes every 5K (about every 6 weeks), and brakes, rotors, and tires at 40K.

    Am I missing something?

Well, you could go to your friendly Nissan Quest dealer and pay ~$65 for theirs:-). It seems to be quite a rip, eh? I washed mine in the dishwasher but it didn't seem to help (or hurt). Next I'm going to try a 24 hour soak in some hot tub filter cleaner I have lying around. I'm too cheap to pay that much for a dust/pollen filter....

Been looking at the GAS & was wondering how the prices might be even after the end of year sale end tomorrow? Right now they have between $2-3000 rebates & incentives. Wonder how much one might be able to dicker down cause of lost resale value because it's an old, etc??
Any thoughts or experiences on this???
  • letsgetmikeyletsgetmikey Member Posts: 82
I think the incentives can only go higher. They are now selling the Olds cars and vans that would have been sold maybe 2 or 3 months down the road.

Not only that, but in the "RIP Oldsmobile" topic Olds is giving dealers and salesmen a lot of incentives to move any Olds. The 5 year/60K warranties are nice, too.

    Patience is a virtue.

We have a 2000 Olds silo that has an annoying front end rattle. It only occurs when the van is travelling at low speed between 5 and 40 mph (on the hiway it's fine). does anyone else have this problem?

I'm thinking it's maybe a bad strut, but the possibility of it being something more costly (eg. transaxle or transmission) is upsetting. It's intermittent, and doesn't necessarily happen whenever you hit a bump. When I had it in for an oil change at the dealer (~6000 miles) I asked them to look for it. They "didn't find anything". Could you let me know your findings? Thanks.

My 1998 Opel Sintra (Silhouette commercialised in Europe)also has a front suspension rattle from time to time, only at very low speeds. It is not very loud though, and it's been like that for many miles. I don't worry so far because it is not getting worse. The minivan has done 33000 miles already. Is it a loud rattle ?

We just purchased a 1999 Silo that came with the optional air compressor. I've noticed that it has a mind of it's own and comes on when ever it's in the mood. Mostly I notice it when we're at a stop light, but I'm sure it kicks on while were moving too. Since my wife is the primary driver, I haven't had to deal with it that much, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has figured this out. Should I just pull the fuse so it doesn't burn it self out? Is it supposed to do this? It doesn't run constantly, but I don't want it running at all, unless I turn it on. Any thoughts?

I have a 98 Silhouette. Have noticed a rattle/vibration in the rear end that only happens with a side wind. Anybody have any clues on what could be the cause. It does not happend all the time but can get annoying when you are on a interstate with side winds. I just want to make sure that it is not the beginning of something serious. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
  • hardestyhardesty Member Posts: 166
The compressor is part of the load-leveling suspension and it will come on for short periods whenever a load change has existed long enough. There is a sensor attached between the rear axel and the body. The system will exaust air from the shocks to lower the ride and run the compressor to raise the ride to within spec (all with enough delay to avoid trying to be an active suspension system). If the compressor runs very often without any real load changes, I would suspect that there is a slow leak somewhere in the system, or a fault in the exaust function.

After 18 months with my silhouette, I am posting just to say how very disappointed my wife and I are with this vehicle. We owned 3 Town& Country vans prior to the Olds. We kept each one to about 80,000 and traded for a new one, simply to keep driving anewer model. The is time we went to something different because we were lured by the toys.
Don't do it. The van is a basic hollow box with gadgets. The road noise, the drafts the handling suggest nothing other than a cargo van.
Because I leased it we are stuck for another 18 months, but I can't wait to get out of this junk.
Anyone remeotley considering a GM van either the Chevy or Pontaic, they are all the same think again.
    Just my opinion.

The company I work for is looking at replacing our current van, a '94 Dodge Caravan Cargo model with a Silhouette since they have offered a 5 year/60k warranty and have very good incentives. The only problem is since there isn't a cargo version available (except the Chev. Astro) does anyone know of a cargo liner that would cover the rear area of the interior from behind the front seats to the liftgate?

Any other advice regarding the Silhouette or its siblings? We didn't want to go back to Dodge for fear of tranny problems.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
You may want to scoll back the beginning of this topic to have a look at the experiences that others have had with their Silhouettes. The Chevy Venture and Pontiac Montana topics may also be worth looking at since the vans are practically identical to the Olds Silhouette. FWIW though, Consumer Reports' owner's survey rates these GM minivans as having below average reliability.

    Good luck with your decision!

From what I've seen as for reliability in any vehicles, seems that any given one may be good or bad. For instance, I had a '00 Chev Silverado with problems and had it replaced under the lemon law, and currently have a '01 and have no problems. My .02.

Picked up our 01 silo last Saturday, traded in a 96 caravan with 69k and two busted head gaskets. Got a fairly good deal ($283 over invoice per Edmunds TMV price) but I'm sure I could have done better. Got $2k off in GM credit card money and got another $2K off from GM rebate so I'm not complaining too much since total discount was $6550.00

So far all is well after one week. My wife and I like just about everything, handling, style, performance, features, and especially the 5yr/60k warranty. I do not like poor access to third row seats. Did I mention I still have 5 kids at home. No evidence of the dreaded rear leakage yet but it/s only been thru the car wash once and all the precipitation we have received here in Indianapolis since I've had the van has been in the solid form. Where the hell is that ground hog anyway?

    I Will keep you posted.

I just found this message board tonight. Very interesting reading over problems, criticisms & praises. I bought a demonstrator '99 Silhouette with 2270 miles on it on November 30, 1998, and have not had any major problems. It has 27,000 miles now. My parents loved my van so much that they bought a 2000 model (With heated seats! wish they were avail. on mine! Just bought another vehicle with them and they are super nice) My only restriction on Mom & Dad was that they not buy the same color I had.

Only problems I have had are the electric sliding door (had problems at first with it not working, dealer worked on it and finally got it fixed. Recently had a short problem again during very cold weather, but no more problems since then) The security system kept going off (I don't think there was a problem, except it being overly sensitive. Semi trucks going by our house on the highway set it off) Onstar phone went out (promptly replaced by dealer) and last summer at the beginning of our 2 week vacation the CD player quit (the first day of vacation, Darn!!!) All these problems have been taken care of by the dealership. Other than these minor problems, we love our vans! I don't think Mom & Dad have had any problems.

Readers might find it interesting that my Silhouette has a full vinyl roof which looks very nice. I own a small funeral home, and had a hearse conversion done to this vehicle. Full vinyl roof with removable rear side matching vinyl window covers with decorative chrome bar on them. Removable wood grain formica floor with casket rollers & holders. I drive the car as my personal car, and for funerals for lead/clergy/flower car now, and after the van has many miles on, it will sit in the garage set up as a hearse. Looks very classy with vinyl top & chrome rocker panels. It is burgandy with gold package, vinyl top matches paint exactly. Most people think it looks really sharp, but can't quite put their finger on why.

My warranty will be up this year, so I will watch this board for any problems that should be fixed. Anything I should have checked before warranty ends?

We've had our 2000 Silo since 12/1/99. We had the leak in the passenger-side rear wheel well, which was cause by an open seam in the wheel well (water in the jack compartment). Hasn't come back since the dealer sealed it with black silicone sealer (both outside and in the jack compartment.

Only other problem just occured. The driver's set heat stopped working. The dealer has order a new heating element for the seat. I'll post again if the problem recurs.

Other than that, still loving the van. I find the traction control excellent. I have this hill by my house, that, when covered with snow, the Silo has no problem getting up. My 94 Jimmy in 4wd cannot make it up the hill. Go figure...

Curious if anyone has had problems with power door on 2000 Silhouette van power door. Mine would not close tightly, leaving the door ajar buzzer on. Turned off power and used manually until a roller wheel fell off. Anyway dealer "thinks this is a recurring problem, because he cannot locate a hinge assembly anywhere and has to wait on GM for part. Also Olds has changed part #, indicating probable redesign. I just hate to get the same replacement part and be back in 6 months with same problem. With Olds demise, I'll probably have this van forever.

does anybody know the lemon law specifics in NY. picked up a old silo Jr 3 weeks ago and it has already been back to the dealer 3 times. he first two were for engine warning lights that on-star diagonoised was a emission problem. Just today, the air bag warning lights come on and on-star tells me to pull over immediately and stop driving because the air bags could deploy any second. Just wondering if anybody knows how to go about getting a new vehicle? thanks

I just got my new company car, another Silo GL. Last one was a 99.
A few of the changes: other that the slightly different front end (which is an improvement), that great American obession: cupholders. The front ones pull out of the dash, and the second row is built into the side of the captains chairs.
Somebody must have gotten the message about how easily the old style cupholders could break. Just paid $140 to have both sets fixed on my wife's 97 Silo.
Second row captains chairs are standard. The bench is no longer available here. Can't tell you much about the third row fold away seat, since mine has the split bench back there.
The instrument cluster is a bit different, not necessarily better, but different. Radio Data System is kind of neat.
OnStar is standard also. Still trying to figure it out.

We have our 2000 Silo Premiere for 8 months now, and so far we like it very much. The van has a towing package "3,500 pound capacity, including engine oil cooler, heavy-duty engine cooling, 5 wire electrical harness.

My question is. Can we, just by visual inspection, tell that we have the towing package? If so, how to identify these things?

Our van came with a plastic bag contains the wire harness that is not installed. Shouldn't this wire hardness be installed by the dealer before delivery?

Any comment will be greatly appreciated.
  • abbanatabbanat Member Posts: 57
Your 2000 Silhouette should have the air suspension if you indeed have the towing package. With the air suspension, there should be a compartment in the back of the van on the side that includes an air compressor that you can access to inflate stuff with.

Yesterday, I removed some after market chrome trim that had gone bad from our '99 Silhouette. On the front passenger door, under the chrome I found some bumps under the paint. They look to me to be rust spots under the paint. There is no blistering or cracking of the paint on those bumps. I took the after market chrome off all the way around the car, and found no other spots like this. Anyone else found this problem? Could the heat gun I used to soften the adhesive have done this? It did not show up anywhere else, and if anything I heated this strip less than some others.
