Well, it seems I have been rather lucky, as on at least 2-3 times I filled up at over 350.

Saturday, I checked volume. Low fuel light came on around 298. Ran out at 357. Put in a gallon. Drove 12 miles to the gas station. Filled up with 13.2 gallons. Thus, while volume is stated as 14.5, it is more like 13.5-13.7.

you need tires already? or just the one that you drove on with no air? tires are expensive - don't replace all of them because one is bad. if you have 30k miles, you should still have a good 10-15k miles to go on the originals!

oh wait, are you looking at snow tires or something?
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Umm...I was talking about a bad sensor.

Anyway, it sounds like electrical gremlins :(
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Well since he had problems with more than one door, I would assume it might be an electrical thing. Unless all the sensors went bad...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I was going to replace the one tire. But I heard you should always replace both tires on the same axle.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
When you fill up from empty, you cannot fill the tank to its capacity because the fuel foams as it pours in. If you wait 10-20 seconds after the pump shuts off and then top it off, you can put in more. I have found this to be up to a gallon with diesel fuel, not sure if it would be more or less with gasoline.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I ran a loaner Golf for about 40 miles after the low fuel light came on once. When I refueled, the car took 14.1 gallons of fuel. I was literally running on fumes. :) Anyway, I notice when I fill up my car some of the time, the gas gauge doesn't go all the way to full. You think this foaming thing has anything to do with that?
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Thats probably what it is. Picture yourself filling a glass with beer/soda/whatever. If you didn't add any more after pouring once, you would definitely not have a full glass.

don't forget the vent trick, which adds another 1.5 to 2 gallons
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
don't worry. all cars and gas pumps are different, at different times. i have noticed that sometimes my car will take gas, gas, and more gas, until it comes spilling out of the car. other times, it just won't take it. and as a result, the gauge won't go past the full mark. sometimes i think my car needs to "burp" so it can take more gas :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I never thought about it like that...

On the same topic, I did see the "valve" inside the gas tank of my 1.8T. I am afraid to "vent" the tank though, because I am carrying gas and not diesel fuel, which expands more with heat.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The gas shouldn't come spilling out of the car. That's a crappy gas pump you are using. I would say something to the station about that. It's also a safety hazard.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I use the vent trick every time I fill up in fact, I like to squeeze every drop I can in there, that way I can last that much longer before filling up again.

Vocus: I agree, venting gas would be a bad idea.

I liked the Sumitomo's I had. In fact, I would say they were some of the best tires I EVER had. The fact that they were cheap was a bonus!

Sumitomo was the parent company which made Dunlop tires. After Sumitomo bought Dunlop, a few years later I think Goodyear bought Sumitomo.

I had the HTR something, but it was a summer tire, not an all season.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
The worst is when the pump makes the gas come out on your shoes or pants.

That doesn't happen much with our Jetta, because we don't fill the tank any more except when going on a long trip because it leaks about 2/3 of the way up the tank somewhere. Usually just buy a 1/2 tank at a time. I am guessing VW screwed up when they replaced defective fuel pump a while ago.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You are guessing the leak is coming from the pump, or the spewing of gas?

I also appreciate the advice on the tires. The Michelin Pilots my car came with are $200+ each, so I definitely am not going that route! Also, the Sumitomos actually rate better than the Pilots do! For half the price!
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    Two separate issues.

One is that the tank has a leak. It drips, not spews gas into the driveway. We never fill it past half way.

The second is cheap pumps which don't shut off properly and spray you with gas. I hate it when that happens! :-)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Why not get the gas leak fixed? After all, that is pretty dangerous...
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
It usually entails taking it to a dealer, and I won't give another penny to that dealer.

It hasn't been a problem so far as much as an inconvenience.

There aren't any other dealers in the area.

AVOID PATRICK SAAB/VW IN AUBURN, MA AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
they replaced both front window regs, my dash cupholder (they didn't have to - that was nice), and the engine temp sensor.

until my next coil blows, i should be good to go!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Glad to find out you got the car back. And what did they find wrong with the cupholder?
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
You cannot be seriously saying there are no other dealers in the area! How about Colonial in Westboro? Bernardi in Natick? I know there is one in Springfield, but I forget the name.

I have heard Colonial is really good BTW, you might want to try them out. They are right on Route 9 westbound.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I don't consider Natick or Springfield even close to "in the area".

Westboro, maybe, but that is about the limit. I didn't know about them. Maybe I'll give them a call.

    Thanks.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
oh i had a years worth of coffee and coke goo all over part of the mechanism. but, they replaced it under warranty. they probably recognize the bad design on VW's part...
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
What town are you from? I generally consider anything within an hour to be in the area (being that my commute is an hour).
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
looks like the coils on someone at work's late model passat 1.8 went out...he's driving an escort around..lol
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
those Escorts are really nice. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How do you people keep getting these crappy cars? I don't get it. My coil went, and I got am Impala for a week.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
the Impala is just a stretched Cavalier with a circa 1960 engine :) does it have chrome/silver inside door handles? that is the only thing that can save it! ;)

everyone is either out driving their Jettas, or every single one of them is in the shop for something!
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Umm, not really, but ok. I am not the biggest fan of the Impala, but it is a pretty good car. I would buy it any day over the Camry. GM has really been improving their products over the past several years.

Please note that this post in no way endorses the Cavalier. Why? Because its awful.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I liked the Impala when I had it, except for its size. The car was in no way maneuverable, no fun to park when you live on a small city street. I always have to end up making u-turns to get parking spaces, etc., and could not pull it off in the Impala without backing up! Frustrating. It was better than driving a Kia or Escort as a rental though. I flat out refused to drive a Metro or Escort when I went to get this car though, because I am too tall and drive too far for that crap.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
You must be young! I can't imagine you in a REAL Impala.

Hey guys (vocus) long time no see.

Am I the only one who HASN'T has a coilpack go south? Is it more common on AWP 180HP motors or what?

Mine is a late '01 AWW, so maybe I got lucky (jinx).

BTW, Upsoluted and Forge DV really wake the AWW up. Evo CAI coming soon.

My car, other than 3 window regs, has been extremely dependable. Not even any creaks/rattles.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    Evo CAI? CAL?

    ???
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I am 24 actually. :) The biggest car I have driven is a 1994 Bonneville, and that was enough for me thanks. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Engine code for the 1.8T in 01. AWP is the 02 code for it.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
    CAI = Cold Air Intake
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
    AWP=Always Wanting Parts?? ;)

and i would take a Camry, a 10 year old one even, over an Impala. my Mom likes the Impala though....she always prefers "get up and go" over refinement/reliability/style/safety. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That AWP thing was cute. :)

The Impala has actually been pretty reliable as far as American makes go. And if your mom likes get-up-and-go, she needn't look at an Impala. Not the base 3400 V6 one anyway...

Does anyone get a shock when touching the car door in the winter time? I was just wondering, because it used to happen to me with every car I have had, but this one. Of course, this one has leather seats and that might be it. Just curious though, thanks.
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
static electricity. happens both in winter and summer. there was a story on the news today about a guy who caught fire at a gas pump in Texas. static electricity from the vehicle is the likely cause.

when I get out of a vehicle and touch the metal door frame, I usually get a shock - some are pretty good, with a visible spark.

I do notice this more with cloth seats. I am not sure if I have had a shock yet with leather.

  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I have no idea how the current Camry would compare to the Impala as I have driven neither car, but do not try to tell me that a 10 year old model will have better "refinement/reliability/style/safety," because it won't.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
you didn't read my post correctly. the first part said what I would prefer. i would take a 10 year old Camry over a new Impala.

then, i said my Mom would take a new Impala over even a new Camry. because she only wants to feel like she can press the go pedal a little bit and have the car GO. she doesn't value refinement, safety, etc as much. i am talking comparably priced cars of course. sure, she could get a V6 in the Camry, but then she would pay over $25k, and you can get an Impala with V6 for under $18k. music to her ears :)

of course a new Impala SHOULD be safer than a 10 year old Camry. not sure though...
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
That's exactly why GM continues to sell more cars than any other car manufacturer. There will always be people out there that will buy car with no regard to build quality or refinement. Before you start throwing stones.......My wife drives a 2002 Chevy Tahoe that we are VERY happy with.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
throwing stones? people say i am bananas for driving a VW. i don't tell anyone what they should buy. and i would never throw stones. and i NEVER said people were not happy with their GM purchases. well, except for my uncles who are no longer GM truck guys. i should hope the reason GM sells so many cars and trucks is because they offer SOMETHING! thats what it is all about!

people get SOOOO defensive! makes you wonder...
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
GM products are getting much better.....since our Tahoe is my first Chevrolet, I would probably consider another. Though, i am really not sure what other GM product I would consider.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
the only true affordable super-car out there! :)
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
    agreed
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have never been shocked yet by the Jetta. Maybe it's because I have leather seats. And I wear jeans and sweats all the time, even to work, in the winter. I have for awhile now, and used to get shocked like crazy in my Mazda when I had it. Not so in the VW though.
