Wow Larry, I'm embarrassed to admit that it does make me feel a little better! I hope my log helps to kill the memories of the Q45 :) I was seriously considering getting a Q45 until a friend told me he'd gone through two transmissions on his.

The Saddleman LeBra has a rectangular area to cut out if you want/need to put that awful plastic license plate mount on. I took it off, and am waiting for a citation before putting it on again. But, since that kind of citation doesnt include a fine Ill just remove it again. Here in L.A. theyre installing cameras at a number of traffic lights to photograph the red-runners and ticket them by mail, so theyre starting to crack down those who dont have a front license plate (guess Im just stubborn when it comes to automated police-state tactics). You might have noticed if you saw my pics on the Classic site, that the windows aren't tinted in front. I had to remove the tinting because of a citation. Also had to remove a clear plastic cover for the back license plate because of a citation. The cops here really steam me.

P.S. Why are the apostrophes disappearing?

"If your car was painted, Saddleman suggests you don't use a bra."

Heheheh I guess that rules out every car on the road almost. Bra's do quite a bit of paint damage to a car over a long period of time. Mostly to the clear coat.

BTW My alias matrixfrog does not come from the movie "The Matrix" (Although I loved that movie.) It is a name I came up with after reading some info on SiliconToad. A great hacker in his days.

Did anyone else notice that "Supermodel Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp" was at Indy being taught how to drive the pace car only 4 days after the end of the contest that was supposed to pick a current Oldsmobile owner for the task? The contest rules stated that winners (1 driver and two runners up) would be notified on or about May 7. I can't help but think but think that, for someone to be at the track only 72 hours after the contest close, the pick was made before the entries were all in. There is no mention of the contest in the press release, and no mention of whether Irwin-Mellencamp owns an Oldsmobile.

During my lunch-time walk I spotted a familiar Aurora - green with beige leather - perhaps 98 or 99. This time the driver was in the car - and it turned out to be a very nice looking woman, probably late 30s or perhaps 40s (think I should ask her?!).

Anyway - nice to see an AuoraBabe - haven't seen many.

Zinc1: Be careful if you're considering a used Q45. A very good Q45 specialist told me that to keep a 1st gen ('90 - '93)in good condition, expect to spend $3K- $5K a year in regular maintenance. If this hasn't been done from the beginning, you get hit with the mega repair bills. If you are looking at one, take it from me (who has made the mistake), be sure to see all service records and be sure that all the special maintenance services have been done regularly. Email me if you like and I'll let you know off line about those "Special maintenance services". Enough of that.

Bra - FYI, Oldsmobile has one for the car for $87 list, with the olds logo. I thought that was very reasonable.

Henry - Saw your car on Zinc's web page. Looks just like mine - same color and all (damn good looking). Guess I got to get the KYBs now. BTW, I had the local Olds dealer pull the maintenance records on my car and boy, did I luck out. This guy had the oil changed every 3 months (even though that was only 1K to 1.5K miles each time), had the induction system cleaned twice and has had the tranny flushed twice. Not bad for 50K miles. Problems were minor, including the driver side lock actuator replaced twice, both outboard rear seat belt retractors replaced, and a knob on the radio(?). Additionally, the fuel regulator valve has been replaced and a transmission selinoid. Looks like I might have a good one if I keep it maintained.
... now, if I can just keep from scraping it up....

According to the salesman at the dealership, the Magnasteer on the 2K1 is NOT user/dealership adjustable. Admittedly, the salesman is a poor source of information about the car they are selling. Hardesty, is the adjustablity of the magnersteer listed in yout manual or the sales brocher? How do you know that it is???

I do not know if you folks noticed this or not, but I have a habit of not proof reading my posts. I proof read my documents all day, all the time, and need a break from it when I do things that I do for fun (i.e. this board). So please excuse my occasional error.

    Henri
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
Your aROARa sounds like it has almost the exact same history as my car. The radio knob broke on my car the first week that I had the car.

The tranny would "CLUNK" into gear with one hell of sound until I got a module replaced.

The rear seat belts are a recall item for the car. If any of you guys with a 95 have not had the rear seat belts done, you have an appointment with your dealership to make.

The only thing that has happened to my Aurora that I NEVER got an explanation for was the dead Aurora. One day, I moved my car about 100 feet because I had to run into my house for something quick. When I came back out to the car EVERYTHING WAS DEAD. I mean nothing at all!!

I shifted into neutral and it finally started, but it was running on the battery. I went about 2 to 3 miles and the car came back "on-line."
It has never happened again and surprise surprise, the dealership has no explanation for it. However, in all fairness to the dealership, you can not diagnose a problem you can't see. Needless to say, my car did its cute (spelled annoying) little trick where it fails to retain the error codes.

Replaced the brake this weekend. Except for the caliper bolt having some ancient form of ninja torque applied to them, it was probably the easiest brake jobs I have ever done. Took a total of about 45 minutes (about 25 of which was de ninja-torqueing bolts). Total cost was about $135. Bought the canadian rotors, $42 a pop, and the "premium" auto-zone carbon-metallic pads, $35.

As I took off the back wheels just to check the pads on those, I noticed that both of the lug caps were broken. They were also strangly hard to remove. The fronts popped of with no problem, but the backs just flexed and I had to coax them off. Anyone else with this problem?

Aurorababes rare in your area, Ken? I see about 8 of the same auroras in my area through the week. Of those, only 1 is driven by a male. By the looks of him, I would peg him for a retiree. That and the fact that his car always seems to be at the local golf course....

I have a copy of the 2001 GM service manuals for the Aurora (nearly 6000 pages). The variable effort steering programming procedure is described on page 2-100. It involves the use of a scan tool, but should be no more than a five minute procedure.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
Most of the Aurorababes I have seen have been older. This one woman that looked like she was about 55 years old would have done Zinc PROUD. This aROARaBABE eventually dusted me! Hey Zinc, you never told me your soul-mother lived in Jersey?

I have found that the aurora babe is close to being a myth/legend. I've had the rare oppurtunity to see one passing through my home town. I immediantly followed pursuit and pulled up next to her and gave the witty remark "Nice car."(I was driving my Aurora.) She smiled and off she went. Of coarse the aurorababes I consider babes are more closer to my age group unless they are a MILF(for those that know what a milf are) ;o) The AuroraBabe might be hard to find but is no myth.

    ATTENTION AURORA OWNERS!!!

On a trip to AutoZone today, i pulled up next to a nice looking Black Aurora with chrome wheels. According to the owner, whom i saw inside, PEOPLE KEEP STEALING HIS CHROME VALVE CAPS!!!! Be on the look out!

    Wingnut,
how do you like the "premium" carbon metallic brake pads? do you notice any squealing at all, and do you notice a difference in stopping power? i want to do front brakes on my 95 soon, and i want to put on the best parts possible, including high performance vented rotors.
    thanks!
  • zinc1zinc1 Member Posts: 133
There's a 50+ woman owner of a black Aurora with chrome wheels who I've seen in the neighborhood. We coincidently had arrived at the Post Office at the same time one day. She didn't seem interested in cars though; when leaving, I gave the customary Aurorian greeting "Nice car", she hesitated while entering her car and looked at mine and said "Oh, is that your Aurora?". Then hopped in her car before I could deliver my witty response "Yeah". Oh well.

Mine has chrome valve caps. No problem keeping them so far (assuming the cops don't make me remove them too). Someone did steal the logo off the Axxess' hood while it was in the driveway. The Aurora will always stay in the garage.

Hi, I'm back. I think it's been almost a month since I last posted...

Just read thru about 140 messages. Regarding the autobahn package on Aurora series 1, bypassing the speed limiter will let you hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear at maximum speed. You dont want to drive too long at that rpm. With the 3.48 ratio you'd hit a tad over 135mph at close to 6200 rpm in 3rd. 4th wont let you pass about 122mph (that's mostly the fault of the hyperglide).

With the autobahn differential, you'd hit 139 at about 4200 rpm in 4th. The 2K1 will hit 144 at 4375rpm in 4th.

    Ciao,
    Francois

I call them "premium" because the cost $40 instead of $16, and they have something like a 2 or 4 year warranty.

There was some noise at first, but it has been rapidlly subsiding. Time permitting, I think I would have looked at some of the ferro ceramic pads by raybestos. They are supposed to stop well with very little noise.

A friend of mine also warned that the carbon based pads may cause a lot of brake dust build up on the wheels. I'll have to keep an eye on that.
  • matrixfrogmatrixfrog Member Posts: 180
The carbon metallic pads can't be any worse than the OEM ones. gives off too much brake dust but I must admit that the classic wheels do a good job of hiding it compared to other cars I've owned.

How old are you guys? Forgive me for mentioning MILF, you guys seem to be older gentlemen and I am a outgoing teenager. MILF is a acronymn for an attractive mom. Don't ask me what it stands for, it's dirty.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
Matixfrog - given your age and the subsequent posting about a high school friend, I called my 16 year old nephew and asked him. It took a awhile for me to get him to tell me what it stood for. So I guess I am "in the know now." BUT I CAN"T BELIEVE I AM CLASSIFIED AS OLD! Kind of like that old Mitubishi commercial -- The first time you get called Sir.

Funny thing is, that the car we all love to drive and look at is an old person's car (it is a Caddie afterall).

Hey Kid, just because I can remember dancing to "Rappers Delight" does not make me old.

The Aurora does seem to be a woman's or an old man's car. But at least I can say that Olds did not run an ad in this weekend's paper offering rebates to AARP members (buick did)
  • larryfllarryfl Member Posts: 214
    Fellow Aurorians:

As a newbie to the aurora, I've noticed something "different". When I turn on my hi-beams, both low-beam lights go out. Normally, I'd think this was caused by both low beam lights being burned out, but since this car seems to have many "different" ways of doing things, I thought I'd ask. Is this normal for the '95 Aurora or do I need to replace my low beam bulbs?

Maxtifrog: I guess I'm an old fart. Having done the mid-life crisis thing already (bought a V8 firebird at 39 years young), I'm now settling into old age at my mid-forties. The scarry thing is that I asked my SON about MILF (and he told me). ...Ah, memories of my younger days...
  • matrixfrogmatrixfrog Member Posts: 180
HAHAHAH You guys crack me up. I didnt know Milf was counrty wide. I didnt mean to call you guys old, I found it wierd reading Zinc's post about a good looking 50 year old. I got a ways to go before I can consider a 50 year old good looking but thats just because Im only 18.

I think the only reason teenagers don't drive "older people cars" is because they can't afford them. If I ask a teen in my town if you could afford a Caddy STS would you drive it and most of them reply "hell yeah!" I think as time goes on, the teens that know a lot about cars are going to start buying "older people cars".

BTW Only 2 people have driven my car while I've owned it; My girlfriend and my dad. Im thinking about letting a friend drive it but I dont know if I can make the plunge.

Does the classic rims come on any other vehicle? I swear I've seen a Grand Am with them on it. I think I've seen them on another olds too.
  • fjk57702fjk57702 Member Posts: 539
I have seen the rims on Olds 88's.

The autobahn pkg gears let the engine run faster and so more horsepower is developed. Drag increases with speed so max speed is where the horsepower and drag are equal. The standard gears should give better gas mileage. On a trip to California I averaged 29+ cruising 70 with a '98 and std gears.

So then the Autobahn package isn't any faster except when traveling high rates of speed? I wish I had the 4.0 in my Dodge Avenger. An engine like Aurora 4.0 would make a light car like the avenger fly. Same engine the Shelby Series 1 uses and that has 320hp. (If I remember correctly)
  • fjk57702fjk57702 Member Posts: 539
The autobahn gears should give better acceleration. I have not read any tests of the standard Aurora though. The autobahn pkg came with high performance tires and so the speed limiter is not used. The standard Aurora comes with s rated tires(112 mph), so the computer limites the top speed to about 110 (I have not tried this on the Aurora but my 95 Riv shut down at 110).

Funny how it's either OLD or YOUNG - but most of us find ourselves squarely in the middle - and the old side keeps moving further out and the young side gets older!

All you teens and twenty somethings - wait till you hit 30 - you won't believe how fast it comes!

    46 and lovin it!

AHHHHHHH I'm hitting 30 in less than 3 months.... so should I start having my crisis now????

I think I'll take my Grandma's view, old people are those at least 10 years older than her, (she's 78)
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
We all know, that if they had an Aurora (with Zinc at the wheel) they would have been back from the Delta quadrant years ago!

At one time the Aurora in the Chicagoland area was considered the choice of drug dealers with the nice wheels and fantastic paint jobs, but in the past year, I have seen a lot more older drivers in them more like in their forties like myself.

Hrm... Matrix, I read back and it did look like I was admiring the 50+ woman. She was okay I guess, but a little too old for me - by about ten years. I'm too busy keeping up to feel old. Tired sometimes, but not old yet.

I just saw the Voyager crew old and young tonight and Kirk Douglas acting on another show at 83 after his stroke. It's all kinda relative. But over-the-hill is apt as I've noticed the downhill acceleration in time.

"...careful with acronyms that imply profanities..." You must be joking - check out the newsgroups, this board is like day-care by comparison. Hope the Terms of Use aren't mad now :)

Does anyone know how much quicker the classic Autobahn package is compared to the standard classic?
  • larryfllarryfl Member Posts: 214
OK. I guess my question got lost in the Old/young/Whatever discussions, so I'll ask it again:

When I go to Hi-beams on my '95, the low beam lights turn off. Is this by design or do I have two low beam lights that need replacing?

If someone can let me know what their car does, I'd appreciate it...

    Thanks.
  • larryfllarryfl Member Posts: 214
I actually did buy the V8 firebird at 39, T-tops and BRIGHT RED (used, w/o the WS6). Loved it - so did my then 12 year old son ("punch it, daddy!") I was smart enough, though, to sell it before he turned 16. Even with his POS run-of-the-mill '84 Nissan P/U he now has, insurance still went up $3000/year!?!?
  • matrixfrogmatrixfrog Member Posts: 180
ummmm the low beams are supposed to switch off when you turn the high beams on. same with fog lights. I seen a item in JC Whitney that lets you have them both on. If you really need both high and low on at the same time have your lows on and pul the lever for high and keep it pulled back. both will stay on then.
  • fjk57702fjk57702 Member Posts: 539
I don't think any of the car magazines ever tested the standard Aurora. The current Cadillac web page does have performance numbers for the STS and SLS which have both different gears (3.71 vs 3.11) and tuning (300 hp vs 275). 0-60 is 6.7 vs 7.7 sec So there probably is less than a second difference on the 0-60 for the Aurora with or without the autobahn package. The real "advantage" of the autobahn package is the top speed difference. In the USA the standard package will get you in trouble. (I have had zero speeding tickets so far).
