I only stated that we are more in debt with Japan because of foreign purchases,I don't care what you drive or who you buy it from. There's more to a lightning than just a 5.4 and a charger. You only wish you could afford one,13th quickest vehicle made and thats against foreign to.I only stated Japan because they trade unfairly with the US,maybe if you understood the whole picture you'd understand.why don't you try duct taping a windmill on the roof of your tacoma head for a steep hill and you'll have your own supercharger.See you in the unemployment line in 2 years when the recession hits.Thank you Tacoma drivers.
  • allknowingallknowing Member Posts: 866
Lightning is the 13th fastest vehicle made? Somehow I find that hard to believe. It's probably the fastest truck made but I'll bet every model of ferrari, porsche, lotus etc. will smoke it, not to mention Camaro's, vettes, Mustangs. I probably have already included more than 13.

"See you in the unemployment line in 2 years when the recession hits.Thank you Tacoma drivers."

yeah, all you tacoma drivers are sending us right into a recession!! jerks! ROTFLMAO

GMC SYCLONE AWD....in 1990 it set Bonneville (unofficial) record of
202 mph, was limited to 125 due to tires in 1992, all these facts
were published in "PICK-UP VAN & FOUR WHEEL DRIVE MAG 1992...."

    forget Toy-oh-ta, Datsun, Rangers.....so on

Please add GMC Sonoma to topic, also add mini trucks of long ago...

    Thanking you in advance....

You're right, I forgot the tightened-up suspension and fatter tires, but other than those, you're driving a stock F-150 with an Eaton supercharger. But 13th fastest vehicle! I assume you meant quickest, as in acceleration from 0-60 mph. But in case you actually thought "fastest", here is a short list of cars that out-accelerate the Lightning and top out at over 140 mph . Feel free to count them: Viper, 911, Boxster S, 360 Modena, 550 Maranello, Ferrari 456, Audi S4, BMW M3, M5, 540I, Z8, Mercedes E55, Mustang GT, Cobra, Camaro Z28, Firebird, Corvette, Jaguar XJR, Lotus Esprit V-8, Honda S-2000, Diablo, NSX, Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, Shelby Series 1, etc.
I got 24. Is that what you count? Oh, here are two more: Saleen S281, S351.

Now, if I could afford $27,500 (Mr. America says that anyone who does their homework can get a Lightning for this price) then I guess I'd would be driving a Ford Lightning...or a Tacoma Prerunner. But wait, I do drive a Prerunner! You know, us Toyota owners are always paying too much for our yuppie vehicles.

One last thing, and then you can spew your Anti-Japan cacaphony. You said you'd see me in the unemployment line in two years. Is this because you acknowledge that as a Ford buyer you, too, are contributing to the downfall of the U.S. economy because your money helps to support foreign car manufacturers, or is this because in two years you'll be insolvent from making $600 truck payments?

to the list: McClaren Fl. O-60 in 3.6 and top speed of 200+ Personally, I would or could never buy this car, but it does qualify for the list.

It would be interesting to see Ford take the engine out of the Lightning and put it where it belongs....in the engine bay of the Cobra Mustang. I always wanted a Mustang, but I never bought one because who would I race? Preludes, souped up civics, or german family sedans? At least now the GT and Cobra are comparable 0-60, but after that you have to wave goodbye to the Z28.

here's 2 scenarios: I buy an F150 made in Mexico. I buy a Toyota Tundra made in Indiana.

-In which scenario am I better supporting America's economy?
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Your F150 Litening is good at using imported gasoline. Driving Tacoma will decrease oil importation and decrease the deficit. 13th fastest vehicle... what good is this for on public roads and highways with speed restrictions? Or do you live in Montana or own your own private speedway? Your statement about the debt is not very applicable to trucks. Tacoma built in CA and Frontier in TN. Tariffs on all imported trucks so they are built here. The tariff worked. Buying a truck like a Ford does not mean that it has all domestic content. For example I looked at a Ford Ranger and the engine and transmission were imported from France and Germany. Buying Toyota or Nissan trucks employs workers in the US.
About your Litening...your choice in a truck shows how the limitations of your thought process. If it is for speed then a car would accelerate quicker and handle better. If it is for work then a regular F150 would haul more cargo and tow a greater payload. It does not do truck things well or car things well. Why not just buy a jet propelled tractor. Better yet, duct tape the tractor to your head.
  • allknowingallknowing Member Posts: 866
Duct tape the tractor to your head? Pretty funny even though I'm not sure exactly what it implies.
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
the tractor to the head is HILARIOUS. Moparbad always seems to put things into terms everyone can understand.
  • amoraamora Member Posts: 204
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I love it..... LMTAO....I thought duct tape was for a temporary mend for the

The lightning is the 13th quickest production vehicle made,it was quicker than half those cars you mentioned, check out popular mechanics.com and do a search they were the ones who did the test.I don't have the truck anymore it was sold, 1/4 mile times for the 99 are 5.6 seconds while the 2001 will do 5.2 seconds, impressive for a vehicle weighing 4000 lbs never mind those rat boxes made out of tinfoil. My truck isn't made in Mexico your vin # tells where your vehicle is made.I Think if it begins with a 1 or a 2 its made in the USA,there is a site you can check out if you want it I'll find it.I own a ZR2 now and that is why I visit this site and I only mentioned the Lightning because someone said a prerunner was the quickest truck out there. So what are you getting for xmas a karate chop from your local toyoda dealer, hows that windmill concept doing? break any landspeed records yet.
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
Well, Barlitz shows his true side. Barlitz, I say you are a lying teenager who fronts as a consenting adult. You don't own a Lightning and because of all the crack you obviously smoke, I doubt you'll ever see anything more than used-up pinto or 40 year old impala.

First, anyone who owned a Lightning would never trade it for a ZR2! Are you kidding me?! 0-60 in 5.6 seconds traded in for 0-60 in 8.9 or so!

No, I didn't get my facts from Popular Mechanics because those bozos don't know the first thing about testing vehicles, and you obviously are illiterate. Even Popular Mechanics wouldn't come up with the numbers you gave.

The 1/4 time for the Lightning is 14.0 seconds. I think you got 0-60 and 1/4 mile confused, son. The truck weighs 4670, not 4000 lbs, and of the vehicles I named, not one of them will ever see the tail lights of the Lightning. Most of those CARS do 0-60 in under 5 seconds and have a top speed way in excess of 140 MPH, which is the ceiling for the Lightning.

You want to check up on my stats, you just look in the December 1999 publication of Motortrend for the Lightning's numbers and in any recent Motortrend, Car and Driver, Road and Track, etc. magazine for the cars I listed.

Don't bother responding with anymore of your racially offensive remarks. I think I shall speak to Pocahontas and see if we can't have your [non-permissible content removed] axed from the site.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Somethings in life are just not worth it. The hosts are aware. What they choose to do about it may represent a general attitude of the hosts in general. Pocahontas is too busy freezin and consolidating topics. I don't envy her. So where's Meredith. No sight no hair on that one. I wouldn't worry about it too much. An online community is just that...it has one or two of each "kind". Ya'll have a great Christmas
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
I've noticed Pocahontas has a tendency to freeze topics. Does she get off on her power to do so or is there some deeper reason for this?
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
Now it's 6.7 seconds? Just a couple weeks ago it was 7.5. You're not supposed to put your Viagra in the gas tank.

Moparbad, the "LIGHTNING" will tow 5000 lbs. it uses the Super Duty tranny. Its payload is a little low at 800 lbs. but I believe that is more a product of the tires than anything. Before knocking one, try driving one. It's a blast.
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
I don't know if you were calling me a duck or something more sinister. Yeah, I called the guy a crackhead. I suppose you didn't bother to read his statistics or dialogue. I didn't, however, make comments racial in nature, and I was honest.

I hope you're not going be one of those that follows others around from room to room nitpicking their remarks.

I don't think I cried anywhere in my statements or do you think that the respecting the dignity of others' origins is a crying affair?
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
I have asked that question many times. Never an answer.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
I really don't care what he said. I didn't nitpick either. I think it was rather clear; you "cried" for a member to be banned in the same breath as you called names and belittled. I guess only you can attack???
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
I deleted all my "crying" remarks. I've only been posting to edmunds for about a week now and hadn't got a good feel for the overall sensitivity of the writers. Now that I know everything outside cursing is acceptable, let the party continue. I shall "cry" no more.

Actually, Barlitz, threw the first punch, and any name I attached to him from that point is going to remain. I don't name call for fun. I joined edmund's to combat some of the BS I saw and to hobnob with truck and car people because I love automobiles.

I hope you and I can converse in that manner and not resort to belittling one another.

I just got back from the toyota dealer and was looking at picking up a 2000 tacoma 4x4 and the dealer told me "oh, i don't think there are any of those left. toyota only sends them (from Japan!) when supply is low, etc..." OK, being a first time truck buyer, female, and in my 20's i thought..oh okay. But, when i checked out this site and found that tacomas are made in USA, i realized this person might be feeding me a line (what a shock, huh?). So is it true also that a 2000 tacoma (NEW) will be extremely difficult to come by? He might be telling the truth. Who can help?
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
I hope you don't think I was trying to belittle you. I just found the 2 posts contradictory.
Barlitz is a gung ho union guy that sometimes doesn't see the forrest through the trees. BTW he's been here awhile and does go through trucks rather quickly!!!!
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
If you are after a '00 model, you missed the boat. There may still be a few out there that haven't been bought yet, but mostly it's '01 models now with the ugly front grille.

All Tacomas are final assembled in Fremont, California. Your dealership really has no control over its supply, but it can swap with other dealerships in the area. So do a search, use www.carpoint.com, in your area for a 2000 4x4. You might get lucky and find one.

Don't know what region of the country you are in, but if you don't need 4x4 for commute, the Prerunner has the same look and most of the performance for a little less money.

    Good luck.
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
No problem. I meant for future encounters when our comments might turn from nitpicking to belittling. I'm going to watch a movie, see all of y'all tomorrow.
  • acf2001acf2001 Member Posts: 28
Webbd: i do need the 4x4 for a commute (in extreme NE Ohio), so i guess the prerunner is not in the cards. Sorting through all the models and options when buying a pickup is harder than my physics class in college! Thanks for the info.... guess i have to buy a 2001. At least I think I can afford it - my first NEW transportation! It seems even the 1999 tacomas i have seen have too many miles on them for me. Thanks again.

I don't think barlitz is a teenager posing as an adult. no Gen X'r would have those narrowminded views. I think he's just bitter because other countries like Mexico are building F150's and Silverados better than the UAW for a fraction of the cost.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352

Don't you guys realize when you buy an import your money leaves the country, most likely never to return? I wont comment too much on unions as a topic was closed before because of it, but since it was brought up and I'm high on the union list, if this reccesion does come I wont have to kiss anyones behind to keep my job.

    Barlitz makes some good points.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
I've asked this close to a dozen times. Never an answer.

If you buy GM, Ford etc. and the "money you're keeping here" builds a factory in MEXICO, who cares that the money "stayed here." If a Japanese company uses their profits from "over there" and builds factories in the US, pays taxes in the U.S. and employs U.S. workers how does that "keeping the money here" benefit you and me?
  • eagle63eagle63 Member Posts: 599
Mod is exactly right. Another thing you guys (superjim, barlitz) are forgetting is that these auto companies are publicly owned. If I go out tomorrow and buy a Tacoma, who am I supporting? -answer: Toyota shareholders. Who are the majority shareholders in Toyota stock?? answer: US insitutions. (mutual funds, pension plans, etc etc.) Yes, Hiroshi Okuda (Chairman/CEO of Toyota) will also benefit from me buying a Tacoma, but who cares? he's one guy. and he'll still be rich no matter what I do.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
My comments aren't meant for Toyota they are meant towards Japan,Like I said Japan doesn't trade fairly with the US,Canada and Mexico do trade goods more equally with the US.In the end it means more jobs for US citizens. If we import 1000 cars from them they should import the equivalent in merchandise back but they don't and thats why I post what I do,I don't mean to offend anyone I'm only trying to help my friends and neighbors.
  • wetwilliewetwillie Member Posts: 129
That's all that American workers do in Japanese plants here. We've become no more than an overseas assembly plant for Japan, much the same way we export our assembly labor for, athletic shoes for instance. Japan ships the major components (engines, transmissions, etc.) over to bypass import tariffs, there's very little in the way of domestic support industry that finds it's way into these vehicles. Japan industries do this for only one reason, money. They not only avoid the high import tariffs (an advantage that is not reciprocated) but endear themselves to Americans who previously thought they were not trading fair, but will now puchase their product since they're providing 'employment' for us. Without the wage pressure the UAW has created from negotiations with domestic manufacturers, ask yourself how much do you think Japanese manufacturers would be willing to pay our 'assemblers'?
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Every time I post a message it doesn't get posted!! I gave a few good lines of data on the Ford Lightning and its gone! no place to be found!
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Looks like I can post now.
As far as the Japanese vs American bit. I work for a Japanese company. All the tools are Japanese, 90% of the parts are Japanese. We are talking millions of dollars, I mean over 500million in tools and parts here folks. Don't let the Japanese fool you. They are in it for money just as are the Europeans, Americans, Chinese.. you name it. I buy what is the best value on the market my hard earned money will get me. I love competition. We live in the best country in the world for products. I have visited Japan and thier markets are pretty closed. They have nowhere near the products to choose from we do. China has taken more jobs from the U.S. than any other country in history!! and there are more to come. Boeing, Intel, GM are just a few companies looking to expand into China...
Just remember, with out us, there is no them....
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
I find it interesting (maybe disturbing) that everyone cares so much about whether their money goes to benefit Japan or not. Everyone who purchases a vehicle from DaimlerChrysler, for example, puts money into the hands of German shareholders since the Mercedes-Chyrsler merger, yet no discussion I've seen in Edmunds focuses on Europe?

I think this is latent racism. For one reason or another, we discriminately view Japan through one economic lens and Germany and the rest of Europe through another. No one including such "Americans" as Barlitz and Justtheone, make any disparaging remarks concerning German or European auto manufacturers, yet they'll be damned if one penny of theirs makes it into the hands of an Japanese shareholder.

What gives? Can anyone explain the reason for this?
  • webbdwebbd Member Posts: 176
I agree with Vince8 about competition. Where would we all be today without the craftmanship of the Japanese cars of the 70's and 80's? We'd probably all still be driving around in "domestic" makes happily visiting our dealership for our once-a-week technical service bulletin fix or repair.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
posts 44 and 45....well stated. Bigotry rears it's ugly head far too many times.....
  • allknowingallknowing Member Posts: 866
I can't believe Edmunds is keeping this format. I've had it lose my messages too vince. It probably posted the message in the wrong forum. It also posted my last message in a pretty strange way.
  • allknowingallknowing Member Posts: 866
By the way, if the Lightning is really that fast, maybe it is one of the fastest production vehicles. I hadn't read a test showing it to be that fast. I thought it was 0-60 in more like the 7 to 8 second range.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
I don't see the racism. I think there are just more fanatical owners of Japanese vehicles on these topics. If there were people screaming buy Audi trucks or Porsche trucks(if there were such a thing) I think you'd be hearing the same theme, ie; support U.S. workers etc. IMHO.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
Wonderful post. Everything true. I would imagine there are no auto companies in it for charity. Now please answer a simple question; What is more beneficial to a UNITED STATES CITIZEN; building Toyotas in Indiana or buying a domestic truck built in Mexico???

While foreign vehicles are being built here to avoid tariffs at least by being built here it's feeding U.S. families. What did a tariff ever do for you or me???

BTW. I own Domestic vehicles because they are what I wanted. This patriotic BS is just that....BS.
