The rear brakes will wear out first as mine did at around 40K miles. As with most makes and models of cars, the rotors must also be replaced as they too are a wear item and will be too thin to be effective will the new pads and would just warp and crack almost immediately. Oh yeah, and bring money, lots of it; my dealer (Bennett in Allentown, PA) charged $500 for mine and they are known for being reasonably priced.

My mother is currently looking at purchasing a 2003 X-Type, with around 45k miles on it, for a good 13k sticker price. She has always wanted a Jag, just could never afford one. What I'm wondering, and what she hasn't given a lot of thought to, is after she shells out the purchase price, is she going to be breaking her retirement bank in upkeep and insurance costs?

I want her to have something she's always dreamed of having. But I can't help but worry that it's going to turn into a money pit with repairs, be unreliable, and skyrocket her insurance rates. Any suggestions?

I would only buy a used Jaguar from an authorized dealer and it would have to have Jaguar's Select Edition warranty. Not some third party warranty either. She will have to pay more but it will be worth it for the piece of mind and the monetary protection. The Select Edition warranty was the top rated manufacturers extended warranty in several surveys. They are very expensive to fix.

A 2003 is better than the first year 2002 but even newer would be better. My 2002 was virtually trouble free but I was in the minority. My 2005 was also pretty much trouble free. It could be an expensive dream for your mother.

Actually I wound up biting the bullet and changed the brakes myself. I did find that the rear pads were more worn then the front. In addition, the rear piston needs to be turned and pressed in at the same time when making the change. This is different then most cars. A special tool is recommended for this task but I found that a wide bladed screw driver did the job. I had other replies elsewhere about the rotor replacement. Concensus was that for the first change out the rotor did not normally need to be replaced. So the whole job cost me $95 for the front and rear pads. I have had no problems with the brakes since the replacement was done. Hardest part of the whole job was getting the wheels off the car. But I learned a little trick here too. It was recommended by another user and worked very well. You loosen the lugs and then drive back and forth a little bit. This does the job of breaking the bond between the hub and the wheel and does not damage the wheel at all.

Hey I have a 2004 Jaguar xtype. The check engine light is one. I know every other car maker in the work has a manual way of shutting it off. Who knows how to get it off? Please help. I just installed a cold air intake and I know that is the problem.

02 X type. Just replaced my battery. Had no problem with radio. Retrained all 4 windows to one push up and down. Tried doing the same to the sun roof and that's where I ran into trouble. When I hooked up the new battery I opened the sun roof to vent using the forward arrow on the button. I then closed the vent using the back arrow on the button and then opened the sun roof all the way again using the back arrow button and then closed it using the front arrow. Since I wanted to make this operation one push in either direction I again opened the vent holding down the front arrow of the button and kept holding it waiting for the little click as I heard on all of the windows when they were set up. Well what happened next is that the vent started to close and then the sun roof fully opened. Now the back arrow portion of the button does not work at all. To open or shut either the sun roof vent or the sun roof itself I must use the forward arrow. I tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours and then reconnected and tried the sun roof again but the back arrow button does not function anymore. Anyone have an any idea of how to correct this?

i have the same problem with the sunroof did you ever fin out how to fix the problem .
  • jerseyjagjerseyjag Member Posts: 13
No one has replied with any ideas. I have tried disconnecting the battery hoping that would reset things. But no luck. So rather then mess around trying to gauge when the roof is shut, I just have stopped using it. Hope someone has a solution.

Hello all, I just purchased a Select Edition CPO 2004 X-type 3.0 automatic. It had 24,000 miles on it from one owner. During the certification process they replaced the front tires due to wear. The dealer installed ContiProContact tires on the front. Since the rears were making loud noises, and since they didn't match (They were ContiSportContacts), I replaced them with the same tires as the front and balanced all four. Those tires would not have been my first choice but since the front were new...

Anyway, I have a pretty bad vibration above 55MPH. It seems to be coming from the drivetrain rather than the tires. I think that because is seems to be at a higher frequency (faster speed) than the tires. I had the tires re-balanced, and they balance fine, and it had no change. Of course I took it to the dealer and they did nothing, saying they feel it but didn't do anything to fix it. (Service writer said to bring it in again NOT on a Friday!)

My question is...What could it be? I read that some of you had drive shafts or bearings replaced. Does that sound like a possible fix?

Thanks in advance. Other than this, I love my X, but it really needs to get fixed. It's driving me nuts!

My money is on the wheel balance. If the dealer has a road force balancer - get him to check them again. I've only found 2 shops in my area that can correctly balance 16 & 17" wheels - one is the Jag dealer, and, the other is an independent.

Thanks for the reply. I just happened to talk to the tire dealer and they mentioned the road force balance. They only did a traditional spin balance originally. I plan on bringing my car in ASAP to see if that fixes it.

MY 2004 X TYPE CAR HAS ONLY 5K MILES ON IT. EVERY 200 OR 300 MILES IT VIBRATES A LITTLE BIT FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS WHILE RUNNING AT ABOUT 40 TO 55 MPH. BUT LAST TIME IT REPEATED THE VIBRATION THREE TIMES AT 2 OR 3 MILES INTERVALS. DEALER SAYS HE CAN DO NOTHING BECAUSE THE PROBLEM DOES NOT SHOW DURING THEIR ROAD TEST. I ORDERED WHEEL ALIGMENT AND BALANCE TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. DOES SOMEBODY HAS HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE OR ANOTHER IDEA?

I had the check engine light on my 2002 X-type, as well as the cruise not available status came on, for a short period. When the cruise not available comes on the car hesitates, than this goes off, and the check engine light stays on. I replaced the two front oxygen sensors. and reset the light. After awhile of driving, the check engine light comes back on, and the cruise not available comes on again, and than shuts off a short period of driving later. The code I received was a P0174 which is fuel too lean (bank 2). Any ideals? Could this also be affected by the two rear oxygen sensors? Do I also need to replace these sensors?
  • oldcemoldcem Member Posts: 309
Check ans see if the hose running to the PCV valve is split open. I've read in other forums that this can cause this problem. Hope this helps.

  • spaceman2spaceman2 Member Posts: 2
Thanks Oldengineer. I will check that. I did replace the rear oxygen sensors, and that did not fix it. It seems that I can drive the car without the light on, but when I turn the car off, and back on for a short period, the lights go back on. The cruise not available comes on with the check engine light, and after a while the cruise not available goes off. I give up. Unfortunately, I will have to take it in to a dealer for their unrealistic labor charges.

I got a message "limp home mode" and "transmision failure" on my 3.0 auto trans 04 X-Type. I floored the engine, it revved up really high, engine continued to run very high, but no power when I would press the accellerator. I went over the side of the road, waited a few minutes, turned the car back on and it seemed OK enough to go home. I assume this is a major transmission problem? Help.

Who has the highest mileage here on an 02' or 03' x type? I bought my wife a one-owner local driven 03 2.5liter x-type with 22K miles. It is aesthetically perfect, but in the first week I replaced a driver's side window regulator ($625, parts and labor), and it has Bridgestone's that howl like there is no tomorrow. Other than that, we took our family of 5 on a 7 hour road trip for Thanksgiving and averaged 28 mpg running 75-80 mph. But what impressed me the most, we hit a monsoon in Alabama-Mississippi coming back the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and the X tracked straight as an arrow through heavy rain like it was on rails. Is it the AWD system, or the fact I had it loaded to the max( 600lbs of passengers, another 200 in the trunk)? Since I own it outright, I am waiting for the other shoe(problems) to drop to trade it, but after that road trip, I am inclined to hold on to it a while. Anybody here cross 100K on the odometer yet? Thanks
  • oldcemoldcem Member Posts: 309
I had an 03 2.5, and, now an 06 3.0 X Type. They're great in heavy rain because of the AWD. Have never put 100K on one yet, but, may try it with the 06. I've got it covered by Jag's 84 month - 100K extended warranty. If you worried about expensive repairs in the future, you might go shopping for a warranty package, since your car has low miles.

Hi, Im currently looking for a luxury sedan ...Ive always been a fan of the BMW 740 Sport but have heard and read some bad things about those cars as far as reliability and cost of repair. Ive recently been looking at Jaguars (specifically the X Type) because I love the classic lines and styling of these smaller versions. Im just not sure how reliable these cars are ....I assume quality has improved since Ford took over and these cars were mass produced but I have questions . If any one could recommend on the following choices or answer the following questions I would be hugely appreciative.

    1. 2.5 litre vs. 3.0 litre - does either have more problems.

    2. Transmission - Automatic vs. Standard... is either more reliable? Ive heard of some drivetrain issues with these... does this happen alot or does the XType have about the same reliability of other cars. Are tranny issues do largely to clutches or much more indepth issues.

    3. High mileage ok? - Im looking for something with 50-80K miles on it. BMWs are usually pretty solid for high mileage... do xtypes compare? are there any 200K mile jags out there?

    4. Years - any years I should stay away from? I heard 02 and 03 were not very good years with those cars having problems that were worked out in years 2004-2007 models.

    5. Cold weather reliability - I live in Canada so this is essential. I have a 98 Ford Escort that always starts in subzero temps... can I expect this from an Xtype or is it made for Mild weather. I love the fact it is AWD so this is a big plus over a RWD 740i.

    6. Alternatives - If you cant recommend the Xtype, can anyone recommend an alternative mid size luxury car. Ive heard alot of horror stories about BMWs as of late and Audis... can anyone recommend anything else? Are any other Jag models better?

I have had my 03 X-type since it was brand new, I have never had any problems with her at all :) I have the 3.0 auto. She will hit 130 mph and gets about 27 MPG on the open road... Just my 2 cents
  • spanky10spanky10 Member Posts: 3
Thanks for that. Im feeling a bit better about potentially buying an X Type... I was just over in the BMW 740 postings... What a disaster!

Is yours a sport package 3.0?
  • possum61possum61 Member Posts: 9
Nope its not a Sport. But this is one of the best cars I have ever owned, Just got thru putting on a Cold Air Intake and A new Borla Exhaust, It will get up and go now even more ! And the way it drives it feels like a go cart the way it sticks to the road. Good luck on your pick there mate :)

    :lemon: Lemon yellow that is

My Xtype is 2003 with 21k mi (i call mysel pampering it) I keeps it garaged at nights but anyway I...
Replace the battery, myself I changed it while the car was on running so I wouldn't throw off the computer but anyway a day or two later one of the HID headlamp turned pink and dim for a week, then a dim blue then only a flicker when I turn on the lamps then out.
I puts only 92 octane gas in it and use full synthetic oil. ...93 is unavailable in this area.
on below freezing days the washer solution don't work at all, the blades will wipe, but not even the pump motor makes a sound.
Lastly the engine light came on yesterday night, and hasn't went off. remember this is a 5 yr old car with only 21,000 miles.

I just bought a 2003 X-Type 3.0 Saturday, and absolutely love it. I've always wanted a Jag since I was old enough to get interested in cars. Every car except one I've ever had up to this point have been V-8, rear wheel drive Fords/Mercurys, and this little 3-liter Jag will outrun all of them. Absolutely gorgeous car. Now, I have to put new tires on them, as the front and rears are mismatched, and Iv'e heard this is bad for the AWD system. Oh, well. Goes with the territory I guess.

    Hey All,

I've got an '03 X-type, 2.5l V6 non-sport edition and I've been looking to do a suspension drop 1-1.4" using the Eibach Pro-Kit springs, but I can't seem to locate any information regarding the proper shocks/struts I should replace my existing stock ones with in order to acommodate the Eibach springs. Info on this topic seems to be awfully scarce. Bilstein tells me to call Eibach and Eibach tells me to call Bilstein, etc. I just need to know if anyone in this forum has done this to their X-Type and what your recommendations are. Thanks.

you might want to try asking over on www.jagdriver.com or http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/jaguar/jaguar_x_type/

I know a few have installed the lowering springs and discussed it on those pages.

    I had a 2.5 X automatic and, now, have a 06 3.0 automatic. Some thoughts on your fuel economy problem/;
    1. Run good premium gas - not the blended stuff.
    2. Run your tire air pressure at the high speed levels - 38 psi fronts and 35 for the rears.
    3. Make sure the engine is not overfilled with oil - They don't hold 7 quarts, but, several times the dealer overfilled my car.

The 2.5 I had would deliver low 20's MPG in town and 26 - 28 MPG on interstate runs.

    Hope this helps:

3 Times under heavy acceleration my 3.0 manual has a catastropfic power failure, very rough idle, no repsonse to the pedal. I pull over shut it off wait starts right up like nothing ever happened. no lights or codes.. Ideas?

  • oldcemoldcem Member Posts: 309
Its possible that you've got some water in the fuel tank. Run a can of drygas through it to see if that eliminates the problem. These cars also have a fuel tank shaped like a saddle and use 2 fuel pumps. One is a low pressure transfer pump that pumps gas from one side to the other, and, the other one is the pump that delivers fuel under high pressure to the fuel injectors. If your problem is occuring primarily at low fuel levels, then your transfer pump may be malfunctioning. My X developed a bad hiccup at idle and was down on power - a dose of drygas fixed it.

I have an 06 X-Type with 9000 miles. I bought it from a dealer with 7000 miles on it and had it shipped 1700 miles on an open carrier. After awhile, I noticed handling problems, as well as suspension and tire noises. Having the car checked by my local Jag dealer, they found damage to the sub-frame hub carrier, which I had replaced but now it won't go into alignment, needing suspension parts that are damaged. Parts that need replacement are front lower wishbones, and hub assembly and vertical links, both sides for each. I didn't incur the damage. Any ideas how this degree of damage could have occured?

I have an 02 X Type manual shift. I have has the shifting boot replaced 2x (@ $140) . It is now cracked again across the front. I used Armoral liberally and it still cracked.
    Suggestions?
I'm thinking of removing it and get it made of leather at a local amish shop. Anyone know how to remove it?

Thanks for your replys, more questions for you tho, only had this jag for a few months and is my 1st jag, thinking of chopping it in already tho. u mention 25-27 MPG from yours!? mine is a constant four wheel drive 60% back 40% front, I guess this must have a really negitive effect on fuel (MPG). the car i'm looking at buying I cant afford at the mo so am odopting the idea of performance upgradings (any suggestions? without making it look modified/a max power wanna be?) and forgetting MPG what you think?

Just bought one this week as well. '03 2.5 car with auto trans. During the test drive I noted a bit of driveline noise, but after getting it out on the highway between 50 and 70 mph it seemed much more prominent. I just took back my '05 Infiniti G35 at end of lease having driven Nissan and Infiniti's for years - and was looking for something with more charisma. Only drive 6 miles to the office each day but in NE Ohio AWD is a good idea.. Should I be concerned about this hum? It sounds like my Pathfinder with manual transfer case if you drove it on a dry road...
  • wshflwshfl Member Posts: 24
Sad to say, but, if you read the previous 2525 postings, you shouldn't be too surprised; grief seems to come as standard equipment with a Jag.
  • oldcemoldcem Member Posts: 309
My 06 hummed from the day I bought it. Dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it. Two months ago, I replaced the OE Continental tires with Yokohamas and had it aligned. Now it's dead quiet. Check your tires for signs of mis-alignment. Mine cupped on the inner tread, and, were really noisy at interstate speeds. I disagree with the other fellow - this is my second X Type, the first being an 03 2.5. Yeah, the 03 had a few problems, but it was the best foul weather and long trip car I ever owned. Then the local dealer offerer me a hot deal and I swapped it for a better equipped 3.0 Liter model.

Try to be aware of whether or not you are in sport mode. I have a 2002 2.5 and have found a significant difference in gas milage between continuously driving in sport mode as opposed to driving in OD. Use sport mode as needed! RH
