How did the purchase process go for you? Was the dealer a help or a hindrance? Any problems having your Audi serviced?

But the buying process was very easy. I got a very good deal, too. McDonald Audi in Denver did a great job (so far, like I said - no service yet).

They forgot to put in the Mobil 1 Synthetic I brought.....apart from that, they did a perfect job, I had a loaner for a whole day even when they're working on mine for only 1 hr, they hand washed the car, drove out the loaner for me (not just hand me the loaner key), drove out mine when I'm there to pick it up, called me when the service was done, fast in and out counter service and it's a shame because they will score a perfect score on my sheet if they remembered to put in the synthetic I brought. I ended up bringing my car over again and have them put the synthetic in and change the filter, a 40-mile roundtrip drive.

Oh by the way the dealer is Schaumburg Audi in Chicagoland.

My experience with Jim Ellis Audi here in Atlanta has been a very positive one. The salesman was very knowledgeable and courteous. The service department manager, Lee Wertz, has been very professional and personable. The same goes for Lee's staff as well. I would recommend buying an Audi from Jim Ellis.

I am considering buying an A4 with auto trans, leather seats, celebration package, cold weather package and ebony pearl color. Dealer has offered to sell it to me for $33,262 (incl dest, tax and DMV fee is extra). Is this a fair price?
  • scirocco22scirocco22 Member Posts: 721
Ravi-- Is this a 2.8? I'm assuming it is because of the leather seats and the price you quoted. Sounds pretty good if it is. If you can give me the MSRP, we can determine the invoice price to see how much you'd be paying above that price. A price with tax included makes it difficult to determine how good a deal it is because taxes vary by location. Also, in what general area are you located? ...prices vary considerably in different parts of the country. People are getting excellent deals on 2.8's right now at the end of the model year and it sounds like you're one of them! *thumbs up*

Thanks for the response. Sorry for the confusion, the price I wrote did NOT include sales tax (which is 6% in New Jersey, where I am).

Anyway, through the Costco Auto Program, I got a better price for the same car, $900 over invoice price. The car includes:
    2.8 A4 Quattro w/ auto transmission
    Leather Seats
    Celebration and Cold Weather Packages
    Ebony Pearl paint

With destination charge, the invoice price is $31,899. The MSRP is $35,535. My price is $32,799. Seems reasonable to me, based on the edmunds TMV price and the carsdirect.com price that I got on-line.

Had my eyes on the A4 1.8T for a while now. Sales folks were very helpful and think I could have gotten a good deal on a 2001.5 A4. However, the service dept (who I would be dealing with in the future) was less than impressive when trying to ask questions, etc. Tried in person (basically ignored me) and tried on the phone (could NEVER get a service rep on the line). If that was what the future held, sorry, no way! You spend far more time with the service folks than you ever would with salesman....too bad, only Audi dealer around so they lost a sale.....

Ordered a new 2001 1.8T in mid-May. Sales rep said that I need to wait about 12 weeks because they need to order it from Germany and will call me when the car arrives the dealer lot. So I wait, wait and wait unit last week. I called the dealership and they said the car arrived the port a day ago and should be ready to pick up in the next few day once it arrives the dealer lot. Can anyone tell me what paper work they need to do and how long it takes. I just can't wait any more!

I am a former owner of a 97 a4 1.8t quattro. The dealers were great, but i got to know them too well. I appreciate getting a free loaner, but how many trips to the dealer do i need to make? My a4 had numerous problems, including a clutch that often rendered the car undrivable, poor brakes, a faulty oxygen sensor that made the car's redline feel about 3500 rpms and a transmission noise that could never be identified. I now own a tt coupe. The ''check engine'' light stays on. The car has been to the dealer five times in the past two months. They order a part, say the problem is fixed and the light goes back on the next day. Like the a4, the car loses power after 3000-3500 rpm and the dealer still can't fix the problem. Now, the cd player doesn't work and my directionals are out. I am very disappointed with this car and despite the friendly service department, I don't think i will buy an audi again. After all, how can i enjoy the german engineering, smooth lines and solid structure when the car is always at the dealer? I now have a wrx sedan that i can drive every day. Sure, it is not as solid as the audi, but it is more fun to drive and the engine sounds and feels great.

I leased a 2001 S4 last year. The car is awesome, quick, sure footed and a joy to drive. The service on the other hand is plain non-existent. No post sale follow up whatsoever. It takes 4 attempts to get through to the service department, 6 weeks to get an appointment and no loaner because I bought the car at another dealership. This one (Pray Audi tried the bait and switch).

Am I being unrealistic, or am I dealing with the wrong people. Is anyone else having this experience?

I've had a few problems with my new '01.5 A4T with only 5k on the car (see problems/solutions for details). Service manager was excellent, but I felt the mechanical "service" was a little shotty.

Took it in for a rear end "squeek" and a transmission "clunk", for lack of better way of explaining it. Told the Serv. Man. about both problems. Dropped off in a.m., they drove me to work 30 miles away. Called 3 hrs later to say the feel they know what was causing problems. They pick me up in early afternoon and take me back to dealership. I pick up car and didn't even drive out of the lot and could hear the clunk was gone but the "squeek" was still loud and apparent. I turned around and parked in front of the service dept. The serv. man was at my door before I could even get out of the car, asking if there was still a problem (most serv. man. would hide behind the counter if they saw you come back!). He proceeded to drive the car himself, pick up the mechanic that had been working on it and they both drove the car. Both concluded a rear rocker problem; needs to get replaced.

It was obvious they NEVER drove the car to test that the problem was COMPLETELY solved. I now have to waste another day dealing with it. I appreciate them being forthright, but the job should have been done right the first time. No loaner was given, either. Here I sit, two weeks later, still waiting for my parts.....and wondering whether I made the right "car' choice.

I am looking to lease an A4 Avant. I was originally looking for a 1.8, but Audi finance is pushing the 2.8 with a 1.67% implied interest rate. The car I saw is $36,885 MSRP with pearl paint, leather, cold weather, celebration, automatic. Capitalized cost is $34,100 which dealer says is $1,000 over invoice. 48 month lease is $398/month; 39 month lease is $430/month with 10K/year, and taxes upfront, bank fee and 1st month.

    Any thoughts?

Anyone with recommendations on any of the three Cleveland area dealers?

tiger182 - here's a lease deal on an A6 at one of the Cleveland dealers... www.stoddard.com click on Audi, then specials or internet specials, forget which one it is..

I've found the best experience at Fred Baker Audi. Extremely friendly and helpful sales staff. What really won me over was their service area. It's one of the largest service areas I've seen, but also one of the cleanest. I've seen the service area in action when I took my boss's A6 in for routine maintenance. There is a lot of care taken in the vehicles and the equipment used on the vehicles.

They were able to offer me a good deal on a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro - around $1700 over invoice. Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow!

I've spent time looking at a couple of other dealers in the area, and none of them compare to Fred Baker. They've also won numerous awards for sales and service.
  • cllk55magcllk55mag Member Posts: 2
1700 over invoice? that's quite impressive considering the car. i live in san francisco, and most of the high end dealerships here stick pretty close to the MSRP. do you think location makes a difference in the way dealers negotiate their prices? i thought i got a good offer when i was quoted 1,000 bucks below edmund's true market value. i ordered the 3.0 quattro (manual) anyway. it should be fun when it arrives.
  • cyberpmgcyberpmg Member Posts: 83
The pricing that is offered by the dealers is based upon several factors, some of which include the demand of the vehicle in that area, how many the dealer will receive to sell, how the dealer wants to do business (either wants to help everyone get a new car or feels that if you have to ask, then you're not "worthy" of their cars), and what profit margin the dealer wants to make in order to run a successful business. I feel that I was able to get a good deal. I feel that you were able to do the same.

I've heard of some people lucky enough to get $500 over invoice while others could only get $500 under MSRP. In the end, we're all ending up with a really great car :-)

Regardless of how others around the world fare in their transactions, if you feel that you've done the best you can in getting a price that is fair to you and fair with the dealer, then you have achieved your goad and should be happy with it.

I shopped for a '02 A4 at the Detroit Metro dealers - Bill Cook and Fred Lavery.

The salesperson at Bill Cook was courteous, patient and appeared genuinely interested in making the sale. The moment I walked into Fred Lavery, I got the feeling that I was not welcome. Eventually I bought my car from Bill Cook, and he gave me a great deal as well. No service need so far, but I am totally satisfied with my purchase experience.

Audi in Huntingdon Valley (near NE Philly).
I just got A4 from there, and I was very impressed with my dealer.
I recommend him to everybody. I will know what I'm saying.

anyway, I purchased my car from them too.
ye, they have many audi brand specialists(I don't know what's specialists mean, just same as dealers?)
I was also happy to buy from them, and those people are nice. (service dep people too. <-this is important for free maintenance!!)
good luck guys who are looking for audi.

I've had a 97 Audi A4 since 97. While the car was under the 3 yr bumper to bumper all was fine. The car handles great, could be faster (it's the automatic), could get better mileage (~23) but is great in snow and handles well. Once the warranty ran it, so did all the mechanical equipment in the car. I've had computer, radio, brake and control rod problems. I've had to bring the car back to the dealer multiple times for the same problem. This has happened on multiple occasions with 2 dealers. The mileage is just over 50,000. Things shouldn't be breaking this early. Audi service seems to generally suck. I bought the car in northern Va and HBL sucks and came up to Massachusetts and the dealer out by Worcester sucks. These cars are expensive to operate. No wonder there is a 3 yr bumper to bumper, no one would buy them otherwise. I will not be buying another Audi.

Has anyone used them for service? If so, how was your experience with them? I just got an Audi A4 from them, and I want to know what to expect.

I set out falling in love with the A4 6.0 - and after trying to buy one in June 2002 - I wouldn't return its phone calls :)

If you are reading this and considering an Audi purchase in the next 3 months - this may not be the right time. It seems that dealers know this car is hot.. and they can almost charge MSRP. And forget Onstar. I would never buy a car in 2002 without a Telematics system on it - and if you want Onstar in an Audi - better be prepared to drop 5K on options !!! Build your own Audi. ? .. hmmm it should say : build your own - pay MSRP and wait 4 months. These dealers seem to have no inventory of vehicles.

If you live in New Haven CT, you will also experience the uglyiest Audi dealer I have ever seen in my life. It's located in Wallingford CT with 5 brands crammed into a shack like warehouse building.. The sad Audi rings are spray painted on metal mesh falling off the building....... very very funny.

My next car might be an Audi - I hope in the mean time that Audi USA fixes the sales channel.

Hey everyone, I am hoping you can help me. I just recently sold me car and have been looking to buy a used Audi A4. The one I am looking at right now is a 99 A4 1.8T Quattro. The problem is that my dad is a service manager at a dealership and he always handles our car problems. He is worried that if I get an Audi, then he won't be able to service it as well since it is a foreign car etc.. He would rather me just get an Explorer. He tries to tell me that reps keep telling him the service is difficult for Audis. Could anyone help me out here? Can you tell me if you have had many problems with the Audi or how expensive they are to have fixed?? THANKS!
  • scirocco22scirocco22 Member Posts: 721
Chrissy-- I agree with your dad. You wouldn't want to take an A4 to a Ford dealer to have it serviced. I agree that it would be rather difficult for the guys at your dad's Ford dealership to evaluate and fix an A4 since its characteristics are much different than a Ford. As a general rule, as with any make, if you take an A4 to an Audi dealership for service, their techs have the knowledge and the experience working with Audis so it wouldn't at all be difficult for them to diagnose a problem or easily fix or repair a malfunction at a much lower price. If you can find a good independent repair shop which specializes in Audis and VWs, then you'd also might be able to get better service knowledge with lower costs of repairs.

I believe it is true that an Audi will be slightly more expensive to service and repair than the typical domestic car. They also don't have the stellar reliability record of Japanese cars. But the reason I bought an A4 is for the joy of driving it. I usually buy Japanese cars for thier reliability and also have owned VWs but I missed the feel and the drivability of a German engineered vehicle. Yes, I know I have accept the fact that an A4 may have less reliability and cost more to repair down the line but that's the price I'm willing to pay for the smile it puts on my face while I'm at the wheel. The refinement and that certain feel of the road I experience while driving the A4 is something that I just couldn't find in a Japanese sedan for a comparable price.

My '01 A4 1.8T quattro is a little over a year old now and I haven't had any mechanical problems yet. But the '01 model was the last year of the B5 platform so they had six years to work out most of the bugs. The 1.8T engine has actually proven to be fairly realiable during the years it has been used. It is an award winning engine as it has been on the Ward's ten best engine list several times during the last few years. The 1.8T has many applications across the Audi/VW model line which should help service knowledge and parts availability for many years to come.

So how did you feel when you drove the A4 you're looking at? I've got to believe that that the A4 will be much more fun to drive than an Explorer. They are totally different vehicles. And, I believe the '99 A4 1.8T quattro actually has a much better reliability record than a '99 Explorer according to Consumer Reports.

Good luck and if you have any more questions, e-mail me and I might be able to give you a few more resources which may help you with your decision.

I just bought my first Audi from Advantage Audi in Houston.I bought an A4 3.0. My sales person, Eric P., was very helpful. He started work on the deal while I was out of town. I sent my wife for a test drive and Eric took good care of her.
So far, I have been impressed with my experience. I usually look at customer relations when purchasing a care, and I think that this dealership will keep me happy. I am also enjoying my car very much. It is better than my original expectations.

I am never fond of car shopping until I was treated pretty nice by Eric P. at Advantage Audi. I am thinking to get one pretty soon. Just wondering how much your drive out price is over the invoice price.
  • jaydolljaydoll Member Posts: 120
I have been test driving the A4s and in the end once you drive the 3.0/6 speed, the 1.8T/5 speed seems like it needs to work very hard. Anyways, I just found a 02 3.0/6 speed with 8.6 K miles equiped with roof, leather, sport package, xenon, Bose, premium, and heated seats. The car stickers out at $38,480 with a invoice of $34,858. I can buy it for $31,600. Does this sound like a good deal?

    Thanks for any help
  • JBaumgartJBaumgart Member Posts: 890
That seems like a very reasonable deal to me, assuming the car is in pristine condition and with a good service history. I wonder why the previous owner decided to sell it?
  • kmcdonnellkmcdonnell Member Posts: 1
I purchased my 1997 A4 in Feb of this year and love it. I have had no problems with it really except for the steering pump had to be replaced in March. I'm knocking on wood because I have recently noticed that when I start up my car in the morning and put it into reverse I get a large puff of smoke( obviously oil) out of the exhaust pipe. My dealership Valenti in Watertown CT told me not to worry about it. I recently spoke to Bennett Motor Werks in Litchfield CT and he told me what could be the problem and suggested that I ONLY use Synthetic 15W40 oil in the car and that would help with the smoke. He said that all that he had to do was see and smell the smoke and he would know what the problem was. MY suggestion....don't take your car to a dealership. They don't want to deal with you especially if you didn't by the car from them and your car is over 3yrs/50,000 miles.

I HAD ALMOST THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS WITH MY 97 A4, INCLUDING A NEW TURBO. THE CAR ONLY HAD 38000 MILES AND WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. I AGREE WITH YOU IN REGARDS TO AUDI BEING A HORRIBLE PRODUCT. I SOLD MINE AND WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER AUDI AS LONG AS LIVE

Pertaining to greggsa4's comment about the horrible quality of Audi automobiles, I would affirm markcincinnati's comment about always having the Audi warranty in force.

These high-buck German cars w/turbo's and other high tech gadgets do and will break down. The warranty is an important issue for anyone to ponder before buying these types of cars.

Of course, I do not know the intimate details of greggsa4's Audi breakdown, but there is the issue of maintenance and how these cars are driven. I went new because I know the turbo models have the tendency to be driven harder than the average car, and the upkeep is more demanding... i.e.-low oil levels can be death to the turbo units!

I'm not saying by any means that greggsa4 beat the crap out of his Audi and never changed/checked the oil- I'm saying these vehicles are more complicated, are driven faster, and require more watchful maintenance than the average Honda or Toyota!

Greggsa4 had a terrible out-of-warranty experience with the Audi brand and I can't blame him for never coming back, probably for reasons beyond his control inherent in the brand!
  • greggsa4greggsa4 Member Posts: 24
I BOUGHT THE A4 USED WITH 17000 MILES ON IT. I CHANGE THE OIL ON MY CARS EVERY 2-3000 MILES. I'M 36 YEARS OLD AND HAVE A 1 YEAR OLD. I BY NO MEANS DRIVE HARD OR FAST. MY FRIEND ADVISED ME TO LET THE CAR RUN FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS AFTER DRIVING TO ALLOW FRESH OIL INTO THE TURBO. I WAS VERY DILIGENT ABOUT THIS. IT DIDN'T WORK. AS STATED BEFORE I ALWAYS BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND NEVER ONCE GOT MY MONEY OUT OF IT. I PICKED THE WRONG CAR NOT TO BUY A WARRANTY. I HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK THAN ME. I'LL STICK WITH TOYOTA.
  • JBaumgartJBaumgart Member Posts: 890
When you bought the car at 17,000 miles, did you inquire about the car's previous history and maintenance record? I wonder if it had been allowed to run real low on oil at some point, or if it had been routinely driven real hard before the oil had a chance to warm up. I agree with marleybarr about the dangers of buying used - especially turbo cars of any brand and expensive European models in particular - unless you can be absolutely certain of the car's history.

P.S. I follow the RX 300 thread here, and if you read back through the various posts, there are a lot of posts about that car's engine and its tendency to develop "sludge" which many owners are very unhappy about also.
  • greggsa4greggsa4 Member Posts: 24
THE TURBO WAS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAD. NEW TIE RODS AT 37000 MILES $900. A NEW COMPUTER (AS PER AUDI) THAT COST $650 AT 37000 MILES. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR RELEASE WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE WINDSHIELD WIPER IN PLACE BECAME LOOSE AND SCRATCHED THE WINDSHIELD SUPPORT AND SIDE VIEW MIRROR $400. NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS AT 32000 MILES N$600. NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING.

For what it's worth, Byers Imports in Columbus is doing a knock-down job of customer satisfaction. I've been shopping for an A4 for a couple months, and made one of my last stops at Byers. Within an hour, I had a trade-in offer that was $1.5k higher than the nearest competing dealer, and was offered a loaded 2002 3.0 Quattro at invoice. Within a week, I came to negotiate financing, and the deal was done. Easy, honest and friendly folks all around, and no typical salesmen scams, last-minute changes or pressure to buy extended warranties or other things.
Ten miles from the dealer, I got my first speeding ticket in six years!

For what it's worth anyone considering purchasing an Audi from Bellavia Audi in West NY, New Jersey beware of the service department hassles. I have owned my car for almost 2 years, only some minor problems with squeaks and rattles. On 3 occasions I have brought the car in and asked for a loaner, on 3 occasions I was told that they had no loaners when I arrived after being told no problem on the phone. Part of the reason that I bought the audi was the 4 year warranty and what I thought would be easy drop off an pick up service. I don't know about other Audi dealers in NJ, but I will never be back to Bellavia again!

Just bought a new A4 1.8Q for 750 over invoice and 2.9% financing for 60 mo. in a no hassles, very pleasant buying experience from Lasher in Sacramento, CA. Though not the most aesthetically pleasing dealership, the salesman (Ralph J.) and manager (Patrick) were very sharp and forthright. I had my quote within five minutes after they knew I was serious without any need to haggle. Probably could have gotten to 500, but as markcincinatti emphasized, no need to beat up good dealer experiences, and I knew this was a good deal from shopping experience. There were no attempts at any hidden costs and and all details on the car were carefully described by Ralph. As he had almost the exact same car, his credibility was good, as was his insight about details and problems common to the model (radio dying on '02 models). The other local dealer (Niello) had all Audis on the lot marked up an additional $1900 so as they said, "we want to eat steak, not beanies and weenies." As you can imagine, this was all I needed to hear to walk away. By the way, I am in the health care profession, not affiliated with either of these dealers.

My wifes car is a 01 A4 1.8t Avant, the car was purchased over the phone from Audi of Charlottesville, VA. The saleperson there was very helpful but the financing manager almost blew the deal for us, he was very dishonest and tried to scrape more money out of us. I would not buy a vehilce from this dealership. The car has had NO mechanical problems to speak of. The quattro system has worked beautifully in the snow, cruisng right up the slick hills past other cars spinning all over the place without so much as slipping a tire. I have had the car serviced at Audi of Richmond, VA and Duncan Audi in Raonoke, VA. Both service visits were a pleasure, as a matter of fact Duncan is so nice they are almost annoying. Both are fine choices. I choose to purchase my car from the lowest bidder and did not have a good experience. Audi of Richmond was excellent when I was shopping but could not beat the price of the other.

    Hi All.
I've been reading the board to get an idea of how reliable (or not reliable) the A4 is. I'm looking into the A4 and a Nissan Maxima but I can't decide. One week I love the A4 and the next, I want the Maxima. I've been indecisive for about 6 months now (and still no new car). Also, what should I expect to pay for an '03 A4 (automatic)? I don't even want anything special in it (not even leather). And can anyone tell me what the track record for the A4 is on reliability? I drive 25 highway miles to work and the last thing I need is to be stranded. I apologize for my ignorance. I know the Maxima is reliable but I really like the idea of owning an Audi (and I hear it drives really great), but I don't want to end up regretting my decision. Thanks!

I am in the market for a used audi A4 which I am told is audi assured. I would like to know:
1.)The cost to transfer the policy
2.)what is covered during the 2yr/100,000 mile warranty. (i.e parts/labor, deductible)
3.)Can any audi dealer service the car besides the dealer where car/warranty was purchased from. Thanx in advance.
4.) Is a loner car covered in the warranty
5.) I like to do my own oil changes, will performing scheduled manitenace nullify the warranty
6.) What are the limits of the warranty in regards to recurring problem(s)

Also is there a fee to transfer the balance of the remaing factory warranty to the new owner. This is a 02 demo model. What should I be on the look out for??

I suggest you check jdpower.com for initial quality reports on these cars. Their data is much more objective than the comments I see on chat rooms. Also, Edmunds' website has reports of their test drives and long-term tests; I consider these reports to be reliable also. As a final check, ask the dealer service manager what problems they see (if they say "none", beware) and see how many new cars are in the service department for more than an oil change.

What kind of warranty is available for a 2000 A4 1.8T quattro 5spd. with 36000. It just came off factory coverage with a good inspection report.

My 96, which I purchased used at 36,000 three years ago, now has 105,000 miles on it. Local imported car repair shop says I need a new timimg belt plus a major tune up, cost around $1,300. Does this sound reasonable?
