I guess I should mention that we're in Hawaii since it might affect the price a bit.
Thank you.
Actually, not sure if it includes all the other fees or not.
My wife and I are ready to purchase a Honda EX-L (4 cyl). We're coming back to the US after being overseas for 3 years and want to buy a car over the Labor Day Holiday (Sep1-2). We don't have a lot of time, so want to negotiate a deal via the internet prior and just walk in, test drive, and sign the papers.
We're hoping to negotiate a decent deal (21-22k prior to any other fees/add-ons) since the 2009s should be arriving.
Any suggestions on good dealers in Northern VA/MD/DC area?
We previously bought a car from Sheehy Honda in Alexandria, but did not get great followup (failed to provide stuff they promised....not big stuff, but enough to make us want to look for another place to purchase our next vehicle).
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.
To be clear, the quotes I got were going to be honored. The dealers, except for route 22 Honda were told that there was not going to be any trade in. So, they prices will be honored if I still go today, but again, it will probably make sense for me to wait for another time, or until I sell my car on my own.
I am copying and pasting all the quotes I got. I believe that any of the best 3-4 dealers/quotes I got were able to match or beat each other. Keep in mind that most dealers only had about 10 in stock or so on Saturday morning, so they may not even have the colors you may be looking for.
I had said before that the best price in the tri-state area were the one offered to me and is true, but only for about $70-80. So you can always get a good price at any time during the year. I think I could have taking the hit on the trade, if that was not the case. The only reason I was going to buy it now was because of the APR. But again, if I wait until the end of the year sale, or whenever I sell my car, I would be able to put half of the price as a down payment, and then I can careless about the “Special APR.”
My advice, always sale the car on your own, so will lose the least, if anything. Be serious about buying the car, so they don’t play around with you. Let them know that at the very end the economy is on your side.
more advises will be posted tomorrow, here are the prices for the LX and LX-P's

I've had a 94 Toyota Pickup for over 14 years (which has been great, BTW), and so I finally decided to treat myself to something a little sportier. My choice of cars ranged far and wide, from the Honda Accord Coupe, Audi A5/S5, Audi TT, Infiniti G35/G37, Lexus IS250/IS350, Nissan 350Z, and Nissan Altima Coupe. After much research and debate, I narrowed it down to the Accord Coupe and the A5. Yeah, I know, two totally different price points, but my choices nonetheless. I felt going from a pickup to an A5 was just too much of a jump for me, so I decided on the Accord Coupe. Being that I wanted one with all the bells and whistles, I ultimately decided on the EX-L V6 w/ Nav and several accessories, but I'll get to that later.
Following the advice of some people here, I submitted requests for quotes to several different Honda dealers here in Southern California over the Internet and got many responses back. One came lowest @ $27,950 (which included destination), so I used that quote to try to get others to beat it. None of the ones I initially contacted would bother trying. So I decided to just go with them (them being Power Honda Costa Mesa aka PHCM). Now I needed to decide what accessories I wanted to add to my purchase, and they were:
- Option Name [MSRP w/o Installation]
=====================================
- Back-up Sensors [$509]
- Cargo Net [$69]
- First Aid Kit [$30]
- Interior Illumination [$111]
- Moonroof Visor [$128]
- Remote Engine Starter [$509]
- Splash Guards [$101]
Total: $1,457
In my reply back to PHCM, I asked them how much they would charge for my requested accessories, and they came back with:
- Option Name [PHCM Price w/ Installation]
=====================================
- Back-up Sensors [$635]
- Cargo Net [$116.50]
- First Aid Kit [Not Given]
- Interior Illumination [Not Given]
- Moonroof Visor [$175.50]
- Remote Engine Starter [$936]
- Splash Guards [$196]
Total: $2,059 (and this price doesn't included two missing options)
To say the least, I was blown away with how much they marked up the pricing with labor. So I decided to see if I can just buy the accessories alone and try to install them myself. I searched the Internet for, and found, the installation instructions for all of the accessories I wanted, but after reading through the instructions, I realized that it was more trouble than I was willing to go though. So, first things first, I had to search for where I could buy the accessories the cheapest. There are several different sites that sell genuine Honda accessories and parts (including Ebay), but by luck, I stumbled upon the Honda eStore (http://estore.honda.com) that showed a list of local dealers' shops selling the accessories and listing how much each one sells them for. So I went through the pricing for each accessory that I wanted added to my purchase from all the local dealers and compiled a list in a spreadsheet, and the cheapest that I found were:
- Option Name [Price w/ Installation | Store]
=====================================
- Back-up Sensors [$569.20 | Store A]
- Cargo Net [$87.75 | Store B]
- First Aid Kit [$21.60 | Store A]
- Interior Illumination [$179 | Store A]
- Moonroof Visor [$120.90 | Store A]
- Remote Engine Starter [$543 | Store A]
- Splash Guards [$116 | Store C]
Total: $1,637.45
With this compiled list of accessory prices, I was set to go to PHCM and make a deal. But before I headed out to PHCM, I noticed that Store A was not part of my initial list of dealers that I contacted for quotes. Since they had the cheapest prices on most accessories, I decided to call Store A's Internet Sales and see if they would be willing to beat the $27,950 price quote. They said they would beat it by $100 as long as I brought in a printing of the quote from the other dealer. I said "Okay! I'll see you tonight!", not really sure if I would really make it out.
So during the day I first went to PHCM and met up with the Internet Sales person there. I told him I would be willing to buy if they were willing to give me the accessories that I wanted for the cheapest prices I had found from other dealers. He said he couldn't do that because he couldn't change the prices of what their shops sold the accessories for installed. The guy wasn't trying very hard to make the sale by trying to work with me. So knowing that I had a Plan B, I just walked out.
So 30 minutes before closing, I made it to Store A and tried to meet with Internet Sales there, but they had left already, so I met with a regular sales guy. He seemed cool, so I told him I was ready to buy tonight and updated him on the conversation I had with the Internet Sales guy. They were willing to do it, but he wanted me to see the vehicle and test drive it, which I was fine with, since I haven't been there before. I saw the car and saw the sticker price on it:
MSRP: $31,180
Dealer Added Equipment and Services
Cilajet: $699
Wheel Locks: $119
Splash Guards: $240
Cargo Tray: $240
Total: $32,478
I told them I am willing to take the car, but I didn't want any of the Dealer Added Equipment and Services already on the car, except for the Splash Guards. They said we can deal with it later after they find out if I qualified for the financing that I wanted. Let's just say it didn't go too smoothly, so I had to come back the next day with a lot of paperwork to try to close out the deal.
So I came back the next day, and to finally wrap up this long-winded post, this is the deal that I got:
$27,950.00 (car w/ destination)
+ $1,637.45 (all the accessories I wanted)
+ $0.00 (all the Dealer Added Equipment and Services)
=========================================================
$29,587.45
+ 55.00 (doc fee)
+ 2,445.50 (tax @ 8.25%)
+ 275.75 (ttl)
So that was my first experience in buying a car, and I am quite happy with the purchase. I'm just curious what you guys think of how I made out. Oh, and Store A was Spirit Honda in El Monte!
Thanks
-The moonroof without the visor is already made not to produce too much wind in the interior (notice the wind diffuser that pops up when you open the roof). -
-Also, if you ever drive in rain or wash the car, the water on the moonroof will take MUCH longer to dry, preventing you from opening and using the moonroof soon after the rain/wash.
-Finally... the moonroof visor really detracts from the very sleek lines of the coupe!
I'd like to thank and acknowledge the role that this forum has played in my getting a good deal on this. As always the information and education provided here are the great levelers in this game with the dealers. I had the same kind of help on this forum 3 years ago when buying my MDX. This is also my 2nd Accord, I wish this forum had existed 10 years ago when I got my first Accord.
Its a great car and the deals are out there for anybody looking - do your homework and stick to your price inspite of all the FUD you get from some of the sleazy dealers and you'll come across a dealer who is willing to meet you at your price.
Autowest Honda of Fremont, Honda of San Leandro, Capitol Honda, Hardin Honda (LA) are some of the dealers who have low pressure straight talkers in their internet divisions.
Most of the other dealers are lower volume dealers who won't match the deals that you can get at the high volume dealers. Most of the other dealers had greasy sales folks who will try to play games with you and try to convince you that the price you offer cannot be got anywhere. The same dealers are now falling over themselves in reducing their initial quotes as September looms near.
Good luck!
Thanks,
Minh Vo
I even found a used '08 with the same equipment but without the moonroof visor. for 28,500. has 5k miles. Too much?

Can somebody tell me the average price that people are paying for EX coupe without options? I picked 3 dealer locations and checked availability, but want to be little more prepared. Or edmund's TMV price up to date, which is $22452? I figure it would be lower due to 09 models being available soon.
How much can dealers take off the sticker price on average? Or how much they won't? 5%? 10%? Can APR go any less than 1.9%?
What kind of paperworks do I need to bring to the dealer?
After tax+destination charge+APR+etc, how much will I eventually spend more on top of the car price?
Price difference between EX and EX-L? $2000 difference by the MSRP, so should I take that as an average difference at the dealers as well?
I'm gonna go around 3-4 dealers in my area(OC, CA here) to get quotes within a week. If anyone got recommendations from certain dealers, please do.
Thank you.
Destination charge is $670 and cannot be waived.
Your dealer will likely add a "Documentation Fee." Some dealers keep these reasonable (under $150), while others like to go overboard with $300-$600. This likely CAN be negotiated; negotiate the Doc Fee as if it was included in the price of your car. Say, for example, your dealer is wanting a doc fee of $400 but says the documentation fee is something they can't bargain with. In that case, ask for that amount off the price of your car (if the price of the car is otherwise reasonable but the doc fee makes it too high, just negotiate it backwards).
Sedan prices you see here are likely to be lower than you may be able to get a coupe for, since coupes are more limited commodities (sedans outsell coupes by a WIDE margin). Sedan buyers are getting cars for many hundred, sometimes $1,000 under invoice. With a coupe, aim for under invoice, but don't be surprised if you can't get it THAT low.
By the way, the Edmunds TMV is typically too high.
Hardin:
4 cyl EXL AT: $23,897
4 cyl. EX AT: $21,871
Penske:
4 cyl EXL AT: $23,297
6 cyl EXL AT: $24,855
Honda of Corona:
4 cyl EXL AT: $23,177**
**Honda of Corona seemed cheap until I read the very fine print
*NOTE: Prices quoted do not include tax, license, dealer installed options, destination or documentation fees.
So you have to add another $670 Destination on before Tax, Title and license. I emailed to clarify this and never got a straight answer.
Penske is the best price so far in my search....
freeway - EX is more quiet than the lx in term of road noise
Power - EX has 190, LX has 177. test on hills and you'll see the big different.
Ex has sunroof, lx don't
EX has driver's power seat, lx don't
EX has 6 disc changer, lx don't
EX has 17" alloy wheels, lx don't
anyway, strongly recommend the EX. I paid the invoice price + tax + lic + $50 doc fee and drove the car home yesterday. In addition, I got over $600 worth of dealer installed accessories for free.
They still have a large selection of 2008 accord that they need to clear them out before the 2009 coming in. NEGOTIATE! you hold the money, you have the power :-)
good luck.
Accord LX auto sedan 2008: $18800
OTD price with doc fee & tax (6%): $20500
Do you think it is a reasonable one?
In addition, they told me that the same model with 2009 marked on it will cost additional $1000 on top of that. I you were me, what will be your choice? buy 2009 by paying $1000 more ? or just save $1000 to buy 2008 one.
Thank you so much.
The way I evaluated it when going for the 08 is -
-The 09 model had no changes compared to the 08 that I know of.
-The 09 will be a year newer when it comes time to trade it in or sell however the 08 will have fewer miles on it for its vintage.
-The discounts offered on the 08 more than make up for the future difference in
depreciation between the 09 and the 08.
Car: $22,450
Doc fee: $299
VTR $289
Sales tax (Utah 6.8%) $1574
License / Reg $58
Age base / property fee $150
GAP protection (I added this on) $700
Window tint $116 (talked him down from $299)
Total: $25,642 out the door. Without the GAP insurance my OTD would have been $24,942. I probably could have done better, but overall did I get a good deal?
You should check with your auto insurance company. They most likely can add GAP insurance for just few bucks. GAP insurance rates throught the dealer is very overpriced and is nothing but a profit center for them. I think it cost me $6 per year on my policy. :shades:
I think you can cancel it. First check with your insurance company to make sure you can get the coverage from them.
If you financed it, I don't think they will modifiy your loan/lease, but you will receive check fo the unused portion. Bear in mind if you call the dealer and try to cancell it now, they will be very resistant and try to talk you out of it.
Thanks!
I figured out that I got the car with all the extras including them eating the installation prices for $22882 before destination
