There is a reason why it looks like an offspring of Jaguar, and that is because it was initially designed by Guigaro to be a small Jaguar, but Jaguar wanted a slightly larger car, so ItalDesign sold it to Daewoo when they asked them for a new design.
    http://irishcar.com/daewooleganzabb.htm

What I usually do is drain the tranny and then put in as much fluid as I took out. I am not sure what it is in Quarts, but I usually end up replacing about 3.5 to 4 litres.
I also do it every spring since it is easy to do. I probably have the best maintained Leganza in the world. I love this car and I do my own maintenance on it for the simple stuff. For safety items such as brakes, I take it to my dealer. It is now 6 years old (mine is a 99 model CDX), and so far has been flawless.
BTW, the tranny fluid stick has a lock lever on it to keep it secure and to prevent dust from entering the transmission. To remove the stick to check for the fluid level or to add fluid, you have to lift the lever first and then pull on the stick. When putting it back, push the stick all the way to the end, hold it down tight with one hand and then close the lever with the other hand. This is important as when closing the lever it pushes the seals sideways to form a perfect lock and if you are not holding it tightly down, the stick might get lifted up a few milimitres.

    Hi,
I have a oil leak and it is difficult to determine where it is coming from. I've changed valve cover gasket, but the leak is still there. Did anyone have the same problem? Can you give me an advice on how to fix it?
  • macatowamacatowa Member Posts: 69
Thanks, a few last questions for you, is it better to drain with warm tranny fluid or doesn't it matter? and what brand and type do you prefer?
BTW I do like the CDX and would not mind getting one as a daily driver and give my trailblazer a little rest as I do about 30,000 mile a year. There is a dealer in Easten Michigan (auto Trader ) that has dozens of Leganza's for sale but they are very pricey!
  • jkobty2jkobty2 Member Posts: 210
Yes it is usually better to drain with warm fluid. After the fluid has stopped draining initially, I start the car for a few seconds (20 seconds) this would activate the tranny fluid pump that pumps the fluid through the radiator to cool it, so you will get some more fluid drained out. It is not advisable that you keep the engine on for a longer period as you do not want to cause damage to the fluid pump or tranny. But a little crank helps push the remaining fluid out. Do not forget to clean the drain plug as it is concave and has a magnet inside it that traps the metal particles.
I usually use Quaker State Dexron III. Any Dexron III will work.
Leganza's are still pricey in Canada too. In fact I believe they are keeping their resale values better than the domestic cars and other Korean cars. I was offered a trade in on my Leganza of 6 years old equivalent to what I was offered 5 years ago on a 3 year old Chevy Lumina. But I am not thinking of selling it. My Daewoo dealer is now a Suzuki dealer which means he is still selling the Daewoo built cars under the Suzuki brand name now (Verona, Swift, etc.) And he has been trying to sell me the new model of the Leganza (Verona).

The odds are great as the Nubira tranny is a GM unit made in Windsor Ontario, just like the sunfire :)
To check the level is not simple:
    1. The engine must be hot (normal running temp)
    2. Raise all 4 corners of the car. You cannot just jack it up from the front.
    3. There is a little screw on the bottom side of the transmission, it has to be taken out.
    4. Remove the red cover where you are supposed to add the tranny fluid.
    5. keep adding fluid until the fluid leaks from the side hole. Once it starts leaking out from the side hole, you know you have the right level.
    6. put the screw back and tighten it.

Check if there is any oil in the spark plug holes. If oil is getting in there, then the valve cover gasket was not replaced properly. The round seals for the spark plugs also need to be replaced.
If it is not that, then check out the oil pump which is held by the same bracket as the timing belt assembly. If the timing belt assembly for this car had a severe failure before, it might have affected the oil pump, just a guess.

    Things to check for misfire
    1. Clean fuel injectors. perform a cleaning service with a pressurised cleaner running through the fuel system (not enough to add a can of cleaner to fuel).
    2. Maybe a defective fuel injector.
    3. Check for any oil residue in spark plug compartment. Maybe a defective valve cover gasket that is causing oil to leak into the spark plug hole.
    4. Oil light is more worrying. possible oil pump damage.

If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost to get your timing belt replaced? We haven't noticed anything obviously wrong with ours, noise, etc., but since it's my wife's car and she loves it and the dealer is only open Monday through Friday I would just as soon have everything done at once!

I discovered the same problem on a 2000 Daewoo Lanos. The carpet on the passenger side was saturated with water. The AC evaporator drain is definitely the culprit. The hose is NOT inside the car it is on the firewall under the power steering rack. The last inch or so of the hose is closed down to a small slit. Well that is a pitiful design from an engineering standpoint.

Before you attempt to remove the hose either put the car on a hrydraulic lift or support it with jack stands. Be safe!!!!

Remove the L shaped hose and when you do a bunch of junk and debris and water is going to drain. I flushed out the hose which was full of dead flies and other dirt and debris. I then cut off the last inch of the hose and reinstalled it.

As for drying out the interior I ended up lifting the carpet and with a razor knife I cut the foam pad close to the console hump with the carpet lifted out of the way. I must have squeezed two quarts of water out of mine. If you do not have the experience pulling apart car interiors, find a reputable car body or upholstery shop and have them dry out the interior. Just keep in mind it is not going to be cheap.

If the car is under warranty, the dealer might be willing to do the work, but, don't bet on it. Eventhough it was their poor design (Daewoo is bankrupt and now owned by GM).

If you have it replaced which I would recommend before 60,000 miles. Make sure the belt tensioners and water pump are replaced along with the belt and that they show you the used parts. The engine is what we refer to as an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks and the pistons reach the top of their stroke the the valves will be bent if they are in the open position. The best way to fix that is a new cylinder head with valve components (expensive).

You can get the parts from Milea on the web. Milea is a major GM parts distributor and provide fantastic service and technical help for the do it yourselfer.

I just purchased a 2000 Lanos. The radio does not work, and my lighter plug in doesn't either. Without the expense of taking the car back to a mechanic, any idea if it could be a fuse or something?

Hi. I have a 2001 daewoo nubira and my front right side control arm bushings are gone and it pulls my car to the right and wears my tires really fast. I can't find anywhere to purchase just the bushings. Can I buy the good ones from you? How much are they and are they easy to install yourself? Thank you
  • jkobty2jkobty2 Member Posts: 210
I am not a parts salesman, but I will direct you to my dealer, you can contact them directly. They can get you the bushings. They are not expensive, but you will probably have to pay the shipping cost.
www.daewoodixie.com, you can find their service departments phone number there. You should replace the bushings on both sides.
If I remember correctly the bushing was around $30 Canadian. You will need power tools to disassemble the control arm, so if you are a do it yourselfer and you have the proper tools, it should be easy.

Thanks for the reply...sorry it took so long to get back here...I'll run the info you gave past my wife and our mechanic friend!!!

    Thank You!!

thanks for your post...sorry it took so long to get back.

i will definately look into the small claims route as hopefully a last resort...there was no mention of the check of those parts although when I talked to them they said they did the check and nothing was wrong with the tensioner and that's why they didn't replace it...BUT it is not mentioned ANYWHERE on the paper work that they did these checks...we'll see where it goes.

    thanks again....I'll keep y'all posted.

Does anyone know where I could find a valve cover -- not the Gasket but the actual part that covers the spark plugs and wires --

I am having a hard time finding it. I can only find Gaskets
  • dclanosdclanos Member Posts: 5
The mileage in my '00 Lanos has dropped from an average of 30mpg to 25mpg in the past few months. I've checked tire pressure, replaced spark plugs- nothing changed. Adding fuel injector cleaner provided a brief improvement, but then back to 25 mpg. Given gas prices, I'm dreading what'll happen when I start running the AC more. What's likely to blame? Might a professional injector cleaning be a/the solution?
  • jkobty2jkobty2 Member Posts: 210
Check the oxygen sensor. It is known to fail on the Lanos.
Do you have a check engine light on?

My 2000 daewoo nubria started this swaying motion and I thought it was the tires. The front tires were beginning to wear on the outside part only. I had two new tires and an alignment done and the car stills veers as if you skid on a patch of ice. The mechanic drove it and said it is nothing to be worried about, but it does worry me. He said it is just the way the car handles the dips etc. in the road. I have never driven a car that did this and it wasn't doing this before. Any advice, suggestions or tips on what it could be would be appreciated.

When you accelerate the vehicle slides to the left, but the wheel doesn't pull. I had the front end done and new tires, but this didn't fix the problem.
    Can somebody help!
  • rpuschelrpuschel Member Posts: 2
I am having the same problems, did you find a solution? I you did can you let me know how to fix the problem.

    Thanks
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
    2 things:
    1. Was the four wheel alignment done properly. This car REQUIRES 4 150lb loads over each wheel in order to do the alignment per sepcification. Most shops do not know this or have the proper equipment to do this.
    2. Have the bushings been replaced/checked for excessive wear. Common wear item.

Hi. My son bought a 1999 Daewoo Laganza SX a year ago and it's been great so far. I was driving it today as he is out of town and the engine warning light logo appeared and the fuel gauge started dropping all at the same time  . I noticed the fuel gauge a little strange prior to the warning light a few days ago. I read it might be a defective resistor card in the fuel sender. Otherwise, there are no leaks and everything else seems okay. So...what is a resistor card? How does one fix it and how much will it cost? Also, could it be a fuel fuse problem under the main fuse box under the car's hood? Just curious. Hope someone knows. Thanks.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Odds are good that the symptoms are due to the same cause. You simply need to get the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer or scan reader and start there with the service manual in hand. Without the scan information as to why the malfunction indicator lamp turned on, no way to start finding the problem.
  • spirit3spirit3 Member Posts: 2
Hi. Thanks for the reponse. Yeah, I hate those computer diagnostics. What is a "resistor card in the fuel sender" so I'll know in the future just in case. Is it an electronic part? And if so, is it expensive to fix? Also, should I check the fuel fuses under the hood anyway just to make sure?? Thanks.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
The fuel sending unit is in the fuel tank. It consists of a float kind of like what you find in modern toilets. That float is attached to the wiper arm of a variable resistor. The variable resistor changes value depending on the postion of the wiper, which moves as it is attached to the float. Typically you cannot replace just the variable resistor but need the whole sealed sending unit. The wiring would obviously have to be checked before taking the time to replace the part as any corrosion on the connector at either end, or a bad ground (think it is under the rear seat), will cause the same symptom.

I have recently purchased a 1999 nubira stwagon and when I go over bumpy roads, I have this banging sound in the front center of the vehicle. I have recently had veh inspected and the front end is in really good conditon, sway bar links also replaced. mechanic says front end is good, I am wondering if this is a common sound. I also was only getting approx 320 km per tank so I had the fuel system cleaned (injectors etc for $39. cdn) now getting 500km per tank, well worth the investment.

I have a 2001 lanos with the same problem the gas mileage is good til the needle gets halfway between 3/4 and half then it goes down too fast. I think I got 200 miles out of a tank once MAYBE . Did you get the sensor and how much did it cost?
  • chadcchadc Member Posts: 2
Ok, so the timing belt broke and my valves bent and my lifters broke too. I replaced and ground and seated all the parts to spec, replaced the belt and now it wont start. What's up?

Anyone ever do the timing themselves? I have all-data program and I am doing it the way it says to...but maybe I'm 360 off with the crank shaft...dont know is it possible?

I put in over 8 hours just today, getting a little frustrated. Is anyone here a daewoo specialist?
  • chadcchadc Member Posts: 2
DONT BUY DAEWOO!!!! the parts are expensive and labor is ridiculus!!! Just say NO!!
  • macatowamacatowa Member Posts: 69
I changed it today, a pretty easy and inexpensive job for DIY's, cost was $7.05 for one gallon of Dexron III and a drain pan. Only thing that you need is a high quality cresent wrench to undo the bolt. I thought for a second that I was draining the engine oil based on the dark black color with just a hint of red. This is a must do, and it does seem to shift a little smoother. Thanks for the advice!
  • jkobty2jkobty2 Member Posts: 210
Yes that is a very common sound in the Nubira. As long as your control arm bushings are ok, you do not have anything to worry about. Front control arm rubber bushings are a common wear item on the Nubira. If you are in the toronto area, a good daewoo repair shop is daewoo dixie 401.

My wife drove our Lanos to a doctors appointment 60 miles from our house. She parked in the parking lot, saw her doctor..about 2 hrs...Then when she went to leave all the car does is turn over but not fire up. I had it towed home today and have possibly ruled out the fuel pump..I can disconnect the gas line on the engine side of the fuel filter and gas comes out when you try to start. This is as far as I could go. Other than a tire going bad this car has been great..Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

    Jer

I have a 2000 Lanos. The positive battery cable connector fell apart due to corrosion. I replaced the connector and all seemed okay except that the airbag indicator light stays on. Replaced the fuse but light still stays on. :shades: Would appreciate any suggestions.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Connect the computer that can read and reset the airbag computer codes to find out if it is a real problem or not. Then reset the computer airbag illumination once it is determined there is no real problem.
  • interstateinterstate Member Posts: 3
Thanks, I'll I guess that only the dealer will be able to check the airbag codes.

Yesterday I started my 2001 Daewoo Nubira sedan and when I pressed the accelerator I heard a "clunk" and all of a sudden my brake warning light came on and my steering wheel jammed so my tires are at a / / angle and I cannot straighten them out! The engine DOES start so I checked under the hood and it looked like one of the belts (timing belt maybe?) was running funny. I am really worried about this and if I at least knew what it possibly could be before I have it towed to the mechanic I would be greatly relieved!
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
How were you able to see the timing belt running funny? Did you remove the timing belt cover and everything in front of the cover so you could gain access to see it?

Without a qualified mechanic actually looking at the problem, no way to know what happened.
  • adnilgergadnilgerg Member Posts: 3
I'm not sure what it was I was just guessing. I am going to have a mechanic look at it anyway (unfortunately I cannot find anyone on Sunday nearby) but I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem. My main problem is the steering wheel not being able to move.
  • angieplace2angieplace2 Member Posts: 1
I just recovered from the same problem. My car randomly stopped one day. I changed the oil, replaced the spark plugs and all this caused a lot of confustion as to what the problem was. As it turns out the air conditioning tube had plugged and was overflowing into my car under the carpet. It had been going on so long that it created a lot of corrostion on the plug between the computer and the wireing. A single orange wire had come lost and it kept the feul pump from turning on. So I had to pull off the passanger seat and remove the carpet. Right afterward the car ran. The way that you can tell if this is your probem is if the feul pump turns on when you put the key in the on position (not turned over), but just like you'd want to play the radio. After I fixed this problem I took a 950 mile road trip, and it never even gave me a hiccup. I hope that helps. :)
  • adnilgergadnilgerg Member Posts: 3
We found out what it was. The crankshaft pulley broke and now we have to replace it but the mechanic had difficulty finding the part and the dealer (it is a poo dealer anyway because they will not deliver, we would have to pick up the parts ourselves) we would have to get it from told him we have to wait two to three weeks and it would cost $256.00. Does that sound right? Sorry if I sound like a dummy. :(

my light came on and off and I had to replace the cam shaft sensor, no problem since. As I stated in an earlier message, get your injector system cleaned professionally, cost about $40 cdn but will save that in couple of weeks.

I have a 01 Leganza that I can't get going...My wife drove it (she says it sounded like an airplane and couldn't place her order  at the drive through, then it died on the way home  ). I replaced the cylinder head, timing belt, pullys, water pump, serpentine belt and it's tensioner. The car still won't start. The timing belt didn't break, but I just replaced everthing. The lower end had no signs of trouble. Any suggestions? The fuel system has plenty of pressure I tested it. I'm gonna check for spark next. Is coil failure a common problem? Any way to test it? What about the cam position sensor? Please, anyone... I need some direction.
