The mechanic who replaced the front shocks saw the broken coil on one; I didn't say both had failed.

BTW, after hours of searching on the web for a source, I found only one parts house that had springs listed and I had to request a quote via email. They wanted $92 each plus $15 total for S&H. I called my local dealer and they had them in stock and sold them to me for $82 ea. No S&H...! I just had to drive 22 miles round trip to get them..
I have always liked my dealer for their fairness.

I have a 1998 E320 4matic wagon. I have changed this fuse before but now can't find it!!!

I have looked in engine goes to #25, drivers side of dash 1-12, and under rear passenger seat.

Any clue what I did last time. Thanks

But now that my mechanic has replaced the front springs, he did find that BOTH springs had broken off about half of the last coil...

He couldn't do anything about the AC blowing luke-cool air at the driver and frigid air at the passenger. Says that since around 2000, MB has implemented some kind of computer monitor/control of the AC system and ANY modification or work on the AC system has to be followed up by re-programming of the computer. Although he has a software package for most Euro cars, it doesn't include what he needs for this MB function. So I brought it back to the dealer today who found that the compressor had a leak and they wanted to replace it for $1400... I asked him about getting a used compressor (my car has 109K miles on it..!) and he called back in 4 minutes with a used compressor having only 42K miles and now the job will cost about $850 instead.. I'm getting it fixed and then this sucker is getting sold within the next 6 months. This is my second MB E-class that required big expenditures in the 110K mile range to keep them going. That is gonna stop.. I'm moving to Mazda or Honda or Hyundai (Genesis looks good!).. :)

I found them myself!! in the engine fuse box 1-25 are brightly marked with white over the numbers making them easy to read.....if you get your readers and a flashlight a section close to it, that I thought held the extra fuses the owner's manual claims it has but I never found! has raised black numbers smaller in size and different fonts...that is where 40 and 41 are....replaced it and the horn now works, unfortunately the wipers and turn signals still do not. Taking it in as the steering column has gotten loose where it connnects to the dash. I believe the wiring in the turnsignal lever which also houses the wipers is screwed up unless a new lever is needed. The cruise on the column but a different lever still works....needless to say a few days without turn signals and wipers is hell. found an independent who can fix it??? I hope in 3 days. Until then rain-x yes it finally decided to rain here.

Looking at a 2005 E320 CDI. Was a lease and now being sold as a CPO. Get th nice financing and the extended warranty as well. How's the overall reliability? Seems to be hit and miss. Nothing of note in the carfax report. Regular service only. Brakes were replaced about a year ago. Normal for an MB? Probably had about 25k miles on it at the time. I like the deal I have. Even with the price of diesel, I make out due to the MPG of my 2007 G35 (the high price of high horsepower). Thanks.
  • greasykid1greasykid1 Member Posts: 336
Go for it! Have one and it is a great car. Brakes replaced means nothing . It's how you drive. Have over 25k now and no problems.

I also just found out the top coil on my 1999 E320 w/106000 mi was broken. The dealer will replace both front coils for $604.00!! He says it is a big job (1/2 day). He says he has seen several breakages like this. I think for a Mercedes this is faulty material, but I don't suppose they'll cover any of it. I only drive my car on good hard-surface roads. I've never had a broken spring on any other car. Good German engineering?? I now have a Lexus for my main car...just for that reason.
  • jodar96jodar96 Member Posts: 400
It hurts to spend $600 over broken coil spring that no one should ever experience in a $45-$55K car. There is no doubt that there is something wrong with the coils whether it is the material or heat treating. Mercedes should own up to the problem and fix it free.

Hi, First Post.I bought my first M-B, a 2000 E320 with 76K onit in Feb 08. In beautiful shape in and out, but no service records. I put on new tires, plugs, belt ,fluids and filters. The air mass meter lasted for 100 miles after sale, so thats also new. Except for the tires, a local MB approved shop did all the work. A complete scan shows no malfunctions. I have 3 questions: a. Headlight coating. A local shop advertises clearing fo $100, with a 1 year warranty. thoughts on this? b. Operators manual cautions against using any phone in car that isn't wired into antenna. Doe's this apply to cellphones? c. Wandering elements in outside temperature display. I've gone over 15K Emails on MBs and saw that this was a problem on these models., (since finessed by MB by going analog). Msg #818 on this thread states that this can be repaired without replacing dashboard. Nothing further on this subject. will appreciate any comments on the above. These forums have provided me with a lot of useful information. Thanks to all. Jim

Hi all, considering a 2005 E500 AWD Wagon with about 20k miles. Anything in particular I should be looking for in terms of problems? how are the reliability of these vehicles? I think this might be a CPO, so how does that work for being a different owner? I've had an 06 ML350 and have a 08 R350, but they were new.
  • bottomsuppbottomsupp Member Posts: 11
E320 better choice ... IF you need AWD wagon for tons of snow, etc. ... O.K.
Unless these conditions ... 2WD Mercedes is more than enough. The maint cost of AWD is not worth the expense. If anyone else has any thoughts...

    Hi gang,
    first post..
I found a nice 320 e wagon with 55,000 miles, one owner and dealer maintained... it seems nice and the miles are low. I think the car would suit my needs very well and the asking price is around 12,500. seems like a good deal considering the milage. also consumers reports is not as harsh on this year mercedes as it is on most others.. is there any suggestions of what i should expect in maintenance over the next few years? any problems that are looming. there are quite a few independent mercedes repair shops, are they the best approach to long term maintenance. can i / should I get an extended warranty on an almost 10 year car? and suggestions or observations would be greatly appreciated! :)

I bought a 98 E320 4 matic wagon 12-05 with 70K and love it.....absolutely no problems....the esp light comes on periodically but I have driven it with it for 55+K miles and no problem......buy that car as fast as you can. I didn't have any papers to show maintenance but could tell from the perfect condition that is was well cared for. I use an independent dealer as I wasn't happy with the level of customer service at my dealership but that can happen with any kind of car. If you just listen to your car you will learn it and know. I have put new tires and a couple of fuses and that is all. It is my first mercedes and not my last.

I just leased a 2008 E350 with satellite radio installed. I've configured the steering wheel controls to run through the preset memory stations for the radio and it works fine when listening to the FM or AM bands. However, when I'm listening to Satellite, the steering wheel contols go through each station, not the presets. Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks.

2006 E500 4Matic.....Replaced AWD transaxle at 30K miles...now seems to have same problem at 60K miles after warrenty expired! Anyone else having this problem and what did MB do about it?

What you guys think, should I buy this 99 E320 model with 100K on it? I test drove the car and tried to speed in the highway, but it seemed reluctant to go over 70M/hour with ease. however, I did try it from 10 miles/h to 75m/hour under 6 seconds. I am not sure if this would signify that engin is in relative good health. I am thinking to buy this car for drive around the town and the dealer is asking around 7500, the front bumper cover may need to be replaced, yet the rest of the car seems in great condition. Is it worth? and you MB owners should I look into paying for repairs right of the bat? thanks

My 2001 E320's alarm system is acting badly.. When I leave the car and activate the alarm, sometimes the horn will start blowing every second after about a 20 second delay. It acts like someone has broken in to the car. Other times the parking lights will start to flash on a one second interval immediately after activating the alarm. When either of these things happen I can deactivate the alarm, BUT, after about 20 seconds that car locks itself and starts with either the horn or the parking lights again. And no matter how many times I turn off the alarm, it self activates 20 seconds later..!!! The only way to stop it from doing this is to start up the engine and then turn it off. Then I just leave the car unlocked and risk having it entered illegally..!

The local alarm/auto electric folks won't touch the MB factory alarm system so it's the dealer or nothing. ANy thoughts on what this might be and maybe even an approx. cost to fix?

I am looking to buy a 2005 E320 with about 70,000 miles. I've read many issues with the 03 and 04 models.

    Is the 05 reliable

What type of issues have people experienced with the 05 model, and around how much have people spent fixing those issues.

Any information would be much appreciated.

    Thanks much.

Just wondering what people here are paying to have the dealer perform Service F for a 2006 E350 with 32K miles. This is the first time I'm taking mine. If anyone had it done by an independent shop specializing in MBs, that will also be appreciated. I'm particularly interested in those who live in the San Francisco/Oakland/Pleasanton area. Thanks!

Anyone has experience or recommendation for independent MB service shops (non-dealer) in San Diego or north coastal SD area. Thanks!

My vehicle won't shift into gear and the selector range on the cluster does not display. After manually shifting trans into gear it would only drive in limp mode. Has anyone else had this problem diagnosed?

I have a 97 E420 with @ 125,000 miles. After filling up the gas tank and driving 4 miles, the engine idle became unstable. (Had never happened before - came out of the blue) Thinking I let the tank go too empty and maybe some crud started circulating, I shut off the engine, turned back on, still rough idle and check engine light. Drove 1 mile, and smelled sulfur. Drove one city block to a foreign car repair shop, and sulfur smell became very pungent and car smelled hot. Foreign repair shop owner said a tune-up (in Millis, Massachusetts) would cost $370. He said the car (which I bought last year, put on 7K mileage, and was told they had given it a tune-up before I picked it up) needed a tune-up very badly and that it had burned one of the 8 coils because the engine was misfiring. Another $200 for the one coil. He told me if I didn't change it, I would blow the engine. (He had previously told me that running the car with a rough idle would cause extra heat in the exhaust and burn out the exhaust system). I don't know anything about foreign cars (should have stuck with a '67 Ford Falcon), so I can't dispute his claims at this time. This is an automatic 8-cylinder gasoline powered car. Next time, I will call ahead to get tune-up quotes. And because I was stuck with a broken car out in the boondocks, I had to go to the nearest place. Next time, I will find out what the problem is, call around for quotes, pay the gentleman for his diagnostic time, and have the car towed to my mechanic at home, if at all possible. If you have noises, get them checked out earlier rather than later because waiting will definitely cost you more.

    check motor mounts also....
  • eliaselias Member Posts: 2,209
same symptoms happened to my Y2k E320 years ago.
The problem was the transmission-selector-switch itself - it had to be replaced.
  • greasykid1greasykid1 Member Posts: 336
Usually comes from the catalytic converter. You may need a new one. Have it checked. Recommend that you have service done by a MERCEDES SPECIALIST,not a generic foreign car repair.

    Hi,

I have a 2006 E 350 that I bought in July. I want to do my own repairs on small things vs going the dealer and I was thinking about buying the cd from MB for $115. Has anyone tried this cd or are there any other options out there.

    Many thanks.
  • jodar96jodar96 Member Posts: 400
$115 for a MB repair CD does not sound expensive. You can check on E-bay to see what is out there.

I would pay the $115 and get the OEM CD vs. copied ones your find on E-bay that could be missinf files or sections.

My wife's 1998 E320 has been great. Couple days ago the key stopped working in the ignition. At the same time the remote sensors stopped working . Tried changing the battery but it did not correct the problem, and I did not think changing the battery would have anything to do with key turning the ignition on. Any ideas?

I have the extended warranty for a 2003 E320. Does anyone know if the extended M-B warranty covers replacement of the valve cover gaskets? .The warranty language covers "cylinder head gaskets and internally lubricated seals and gaskets". Thanks in advance.
  • jodar96jodar96 Member Posts: 400
If the extended warranty covers " Engine gaskets", your valve cover gasket is a part of the warranty and must be covered.

On my 2001 E430, it cost $320 to replace the driver side valve cover two-piece gasket. They gave me a $480 bill first until I started taking apart their bill.

Let them know that you have read your warranty and have searched other engine part warranties and are aware that this is covered before they tell you it is not.

You may have a no cost option as close as your public library. My library has manufacturer service manuals as well as on site access to All Data online database. It has saved me the expense of purchasing the manuals for the occasional repairs I have to do.
  • catdrivercatdriver Member Posts: 2
Thanks Joe. I took the car in, and the extended warranty covers the valve cover gaskets. However, the dealer says the oil is only misting out and must be actually dripping onto the exhaust. In other words, my problem is not bad enough to warrant a replacement of the gaskets. My extended warranty is good 'til Jan., 2010, so I'm going to monitor the situation and either take the car back to them in a few months or take to the other MB dealer here.. When I asked them how much oil leaking is too much, the response is that it must be dripping. I may also contact MB hdq here in the US to get another opinion.
  • jodar96jodar96 Member Posts: 400
I love these people.....A misty oil is a leaky oil. Mine was dripping on the exhaust and was smelling. I put a folded oil absorbant pad over the leaky corner and put the engine cover over it. It has stopped the dripping but was gradually soaking the pad.

Just go back in a few weeks and tell them the smell of oil bothers you and it is NEVER a good idea for oil to drip or mist over hot exhaust. The oil could catch on fire whether it is a drip or a mist.

Has any experienced a noise similar to a wheel 'rubbing' when making turns (forward or reverse). A authorized Euro-car mechanic suggested rolling down windows to determine if the noise can be pin pointed, but the noise was not noticable with the windows down... only when in the closed cabin. I'm unsure if it is just the noise of the tire (newer performance tires) tread design as it grips the road surface when turning or if there is a potential problem with the wheel struts or in the transfer case. The car has about 81k miles on it so I'm sensitive to parts wearing out due to this point in the maintenance life. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks. :confuse:
  • eliaselias Member Posts: 2,209
Did you just get those sticky new tires?
If yes, I bet it's just normal/expected tire noise you are hearing.
A possible test to help confirm that is to try the exact same turns on iciest/wettest surface you can find. Or maybe off pavement - on grass or dirt.
