That's the coolest job in the world. Drove everything from a stripped Ford Escort to a loaded Boxter.

Does anyone know if there is much of a difference between the old 05 silver and the new 06 Classic Silver Metallic on the tC...?

    Thanks

    Mike:
Yesterday, while driving on AZ I-10 I saw a auto transporter heading East, presumably to Phx., with a load a Scions. The trailer had on it a tC in a brilliant silver color which I presume is the new Classic Silver Metallic. In my opinion it was a much improved color over the '05 silver...it reminded me of the silver on the Mazda RX8 or a silver Porsche...looked good! Decisions, decisions, etc. Heard today that my '06 White should arrive in two weeks.

wow..that nautical blue looks nice! i'm kind of glad i waited awhile before deciding to buy a tc..now i can get the 06! Are there any discounts for the 05s?
  • buckeyecasebuckeyecase Member Posts: 8
Don't count on any discounts on the 05's. Dealers hardly have any in stock. Those that they do have don't sit on the lot for long. It's not like they have 2 months' worth of old inventory to move to make room for 06's. At least around here, the cars are off the lot within days of arriving.

    Just a guess.
  • boikoboiko Member Posts: 82
I lived in NH..and I've called Scion dealers throughout NH and MA, and they all say that 06 tC's won't be showing up around here for another month..?? Why is it taking so long to get those 06 tC's into this area..?

Meanwhile I read that some people have already taken delivery on their 06 tC's....

My windsheild was destroyed by a piece of tire that poped up in the air from the car in front of me on the highway and has been in the shop for a week because they are waiting on the molding and apparently it is not available in the US. Thats what I was told. How long did it take to replace?
  • tcmantcman Member Posts: 1
I just ordered my TC on June 11, i ordered it with the side air bag option... my question is how long do u guys think it will take and also if i will be getting an 05 or an 06????
    thanks BB

I have a Scion TC with about 2,000 miles on it. Twice in the last couple of weeks, the engine raced when trying to brake quickly. Once at a stop sign and once at a stop light, the engine revved up while braking so that the car ended up in the intersection with my foot pressing hard on the brake and the engine racing. Turning the ignition off then on brought the engine back to a normal idle speed.

For details, the cruise control had not been on and the car was thoroughly warmed up.

The car was brought to a Toyota dealer where the car was driven and I was told nothing was wrong with the car (ha).

Has anyone heard of this problem?

I saw a couple of other posts implying that the throttle was electronically controlled (drive by wire) rather than mechanically controlled. Is this true?

    Thanks Dave C
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Next time make sure that you are not stepping on both the throttle and brake at the same time by mistake. They are fairly close and I have seen this happen on occasion.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,537
it is a drive by wire throttle.

I assume you have an automatic trans BTW.

Hi..I am the proud owner of a 1993 (yes 1993) Nissan 240SX XE. Hatchback, moonroof, automatic, etc. This car looks to be similar but I gotta say I NEVER had ANY of the cracks, creaks, squeaks, noises and other problems reported here w/the Nissan - in fact never ANY problems period. I have to wonder if some of the reported issues here are why there are so FEW hatchbacks on the market anymore. Haven't tried out a Scion yet but plan to soon but would like some input here and even better if anyone ever had a 240SX. The handling of the 240SX is amazing..I have yet to drive a car that handles as well which is why I still am driving it! I also have a "fun" car..a bmw Z3 and I swear the almost 13 year old Nissan handles even better than the beamer. I have NEVER had ANY major work done on it either. Just brakes and few light bulbs over the 13 years. The reason I've held onto it so long, never found anything I liked as well. ALMOST bought a Mitsu Eclipse. Then almost a Mustang. Was looking for a bit more power/larger engine but wasn't thrilled with either one and when priced as I wanted they were over or at 30 grand.

Is the 2006 model out yet for Scion? I have no Toyota history..was always a Nissan/Datsun gal but since Nissan has nothing in that class anymore, it's time for a change.

So far I've read problems with 3rd gear manual (I would want automatic), a "stupid" radio cover that sounds like they didn't "get" what would work for people and how stupid it looks open, a problem with the sun roof coming loose, rattling, creaking, cracking, etc. which is of concern (have a full pop up moon roof on the Nissan, never a hiss all these years) and the hatchback rattling/clicking sounds as well as a few other things. Coming from a very quiet 13 year old car, I'm sure some of this would bug me so hoping to hear there are improvements in the new model. Thanks for any input.

I also posted this in one other thread..wasn't sure where it should go....

yes my deflector broke in my garage after it was at the dealership to fix the creaking/groaning sounds. good news, they fixed the sounds!!!!!!!!
  • hercules00hercules00 Member Posts: 134
I just test drove a tC today and as an '03 Celica GTS owner, I feel completely cheated. If they could offer so much in the interior at this price , why why why could they not outfit the Celica a little better (given that one paid SIGNIFICANTLY more for that car). I do not have any regrets about the vehicle performance as such, coz a Celica still is the better handler and gives a more edgy driving experience (along with the edgy looks, and I like both :) However, the interior of this car is simply awesome for the price, I miss that.

That aside, I hope the tC's do not suffer from the build issues I am facing with my Celica. The car is just a year and a half old and the sunroof fabric shade creaks incessantly, both the door handles rattle with the music, there are wierd creaks at low rpms from the underside and the transmission makes wierd sounds while compression braking. The part that hurts the most, the dealership refuses to correct any of these. In case of the creaks and rattles, they say it isnt under warranty. And in other cases, they refuse to acknowledge that there is any problem! Toyota's may be reliable in the long run, but the tweaks and rattles are all in there!

Some might have seen my post about being a '93 Nissan 240SX owner that has had nothing but perfection from the car and am looking to get something very close. It is a hatchback w/moonroof, auto, etc. This care seems similar but has several consistent noted problems...have any of these disappeared with the 2006 models? Creaks/noises from hatchback, noise AND breakage of sunroof, 3rd gear problems, stupid radio flap, etc.? Anyway..since Toyota is foreign to me...could someone help me decipher the options listed and what ones are "must have" if I'm looking to duplicate the handling and great experience of my 240SX? For example what is "Ground Effects Kit"? Or please point me where I can find out what each of these is. I clicked the "more info" and all it does is come up with the same list in another box!

Found the Scion site but it looks like it only has 2005 models on there..will check it out but would REALLY appreciate any input on this car, the known problems, the 2006 model what is known AND the options above..what are Must Haves vs Don't Bother.
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Well went through the Scion site...there were a few of these options for the 2005 but not all of them. One big question...does that hatch have a "privacy" protector so folks can't see what you have back there...I LOVE that in my Nissan.

How is the stereo system on this car? Anyone get the subwoofer? I think I would get maybe the lip spoiler but NOT the pedastal..that is a nightmare on Mitsubishi Eclipses as it blocks view out of back. The ground effects maybe too. And the mats..always get those. And security system.

What color is everyone's favorite? I think I will look into a 2006 BUT NOT until they go through the first few shipments of them in case there are new bugs and to see if old bugs are fixed.

Would love to hear ANY input on this car and these questions...I still don't know how Scion came to be from Toyota...is it American Toyota? Gonna research that now.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,537
I wish my '05 had the stereo upgrades, especially the wheel controls, which would make the volume buttons much less of an annoyance. The ipod stuff would be neat to have too.

To the guy with all the questions, there is a hard cover over the hatch area. And, the lip spoiler looks nice, and reasonably subtle. Someone that parks near me has one on a blue (the darker) one, and it looks good. I like that color in person.

When the Scion TC was first talked about...there was mention of a "supercharger" option...did that ever happen? After doing some more research I now fully understand that the "options" are all dealer based except the transmission and paint pretty much. So one has to be sure they find a GREAT dealer right? And this is a "gal" with all the questions..an "old" gal at that LOL.

Does anyone have XM? You have to pay a fee every month right? Haven't really research it much. The ipod attachment might be fun..just have to get an ipod now LOL. It seems they are changing the blue for 2006? stickguy...did you see the 2005 blue or 2006? Seems the 2006 first shipment is just coming out. I sure hope folks post here about any discoveries/experiences with the first ones shipped. I am always a bit worried to buy at the very beginning of a year for a car. And this being only the second year for Scion...but so far it seems as close to my old 240SX as I'll probably ever get for the money. Though the ride and "silence" may not be there. They said they redesigned the "head" of the stereo..not sure if that means that door flap or not..anyone know. I apologize for posting in the wrong thread and posting a report from scion's web site here...got me in trouble with the board moderators. Ooops. Hope to see more posts here about the 2006 Scion TC.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,537
I saw the '05 blue. No idea what the '06 color is.

The headunit is the stereo itself. I imagine the cover will be the same.

For XM, yes you pay a monthly subscription fee (I believe about $7-$10 now, depending on how long a term you pay for).

The options, if you order them up front, are actually supposed to be put on at the port (delivery center), so they are on the car when the dealer gets it. But, the dealer can also add most (if not all) of them if you decide to get them after they already have the car. So yes, pick out a good dealer, especially since the price is probably going to be the same no matter where you buy.

I sat in a 2006 tC last night that had the Ipod stereo. It had a rotary knob for volume control - an improvement over the 05's that had up down buttons.

Does anyone know if the BASE stereo unit on the 2006s has a rotary volume knob?
  • csmallfieldcsmallfield Member Posts: 1
yes the knob is in the base model. I just bought a 2006 tC, it's at the dealership right now, I'll be picking it up as soon as some paperwork goes through. So I'll be able to let people know some 2006 info.

I have an 05 tC and im so pissed cause the only thing its missing is stereo controls on the stearing wheel... the 06's from what I understand have this feature. I went to get my free oil change and while I was there I talked to the service guy and he said you can't even get an upgrade for the 05 with the steering wheel controls... CUURRRSSEESSS!!!
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Interesting because if you look at the official Scion site (which thus far only says 05 but seems to have 06 info - I wrote to ask them about it), there are two pics of the stereo unit...the one with the knobs it SAYS is the IPOD version BUT the one without the knobs has the options for "folder" "files", etc...whereas the one with the knobs does not - very confusing so I wrote to them but have heard nothing back. It seemed like their pics were reversed since the options that seem to go with IPOD were on the pic that said it was WITHOUT the IPOD. So when someone gets a FINISHED 06 one way or the other, let us know for sure OK?
  • tdottdot Member Posts: 1
Do you guys know which of the two is the more darker black? Initially, my guess is that black sand pearl is actually black, while flint mica is a dark grey/charcoal color. but in the scion.com website, it shows the opposite: that flint mica is a little darker than the black sand pearl. Can you guys help me out?
  • johnnyringojohnnyringo Member Posts: 31
The Black sand pearl is darker in both the shade and the sun... but keep in mind it is still a pearl finish so it looks different in sun and shade. I have a flint mica tC and its neat beacuse the pearl effect really stands out, in the sun it alomost looks dark blue with a greay hint... in the shade it takes on a dark lusturous, wet looking charcole greay... I originaly was going to go for the black but the tC is kind of different than cars like a civic or acura in the sense that black IMO doesn't really look as good as you might think... Maybe its the pearl finishes that they use but the tC looks really good in color rather than black... I actualy just recently saw a medium almost electric blue tC and it looked super sharp... (not the powder blue)... hope this helps :)

Could we start a 2006 Scion TC forum now that they are out?

just keep this one going. They only start a new model year thread when it is a new design, otherwise it gets messy.

Really? Oh OK...I've been looking at some others and have seen new 2006 threads started for existing models. which is why I requested one here. That way when someone searches "Scion TC" they would be able to choose to review comments on the 2006 model VS past experience with the 2005 without having to wade through everything else. But OK..rules are rules...already learned that as I posted a 2006 Scion TC press release and got an email telling me it had been removed because it's not allowed.

and am in LOVE LOVE LOVE. The steering wheel controls, iPod, dual sunroofs, cool wheels are all new to me. I totally don't fit the demographic as I'm a 40 yr old emptynester but dang I look so cute in it (jk).

I got all the extras on the car including ground effects kit and spoiler. The spoiler does block your rear view a bit - but I'll adjust. I love the quik get up & go even with the air running full blast. It has a bit of a hesitation but finds its power pretty darn quick.

Check it out & tell me what you think. TFL.

Thanks again for posting info...especially about the spoiler in this thread. I am very short and I know when I test drove a Mitsu Eclipse the spoiler on that thing blocked a substantial part of my view so I will go with the lip spoiler only on the TC.

I wonder what others feel about the gauges on the dash..to me they seem very drab (as did Mitsubishi ones)...compared to several other cars I looked at. Do you all agree? Talking about the speedometer, etc.

Looked at a friend's new Civic today...yes a lot less engine but it sure looked sharp but didn't have some of the goodies the TC does on either side of the hood LOL.

About the ground effects..does that give the car less ground clearance? I have a steep driveway as I posted before and my 240SX bites it often, my Z3 sometimes so just wondering.

To me my Nissan 240SX had it all...but alas after 13 years I gotta move on....

Hi just wondering if anyone had a good experience with a particular Scion dealer in Orange County CA (North OC if possible or Central)? I will be ordering a 2006 with lots of options, yes I'm picky and I want to deal with competent, friendly folks. Any input would be greatly appreciated. So far have heard of a few GREAT AZ ones but that's a bit too far LOL. Also will want to use for service as well.
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Also..does anyone know what the paint cutout looking circles are on the front bumper just above where the fog lights go in below on the grille? They are VERY CLEAR on pics on scion.com page and you can see one on Kelly's pics in picture 6. I thought those were pre-cutouts for fog lights but then saw on the pics above and on the site the fog lights are put down below on the grille sides? Seems weird to me...anyone know what those are? Are they "stamped" with something?
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Ooops hit enter too soon..on Kelly's it seems only visible on the driver's side but if you go to Scion.com and go through the build a car photos there are clearly TWO circle cutouts on the front bumper....if they are intentional what are they and why is there seemingly only one on Kelly's?
  • juandehavasujuandehavasu Member Posts: 16
My '06 has the "cutout" only on the drivers side. It is actually a snap on cap that covers a tie-down point for shipping the cars. With the cap removed a screw-in eyebolt is used as a tie-down point during shipment. The rear is secured via the bracket welded to the rear crossmember. This cap is fairly common on Japanese and German cars ie. the New Beetle and Mazda RX8 to name just two.
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Wonder why the scion.com site shows one on each side. I also wonder why they have to tie down during shipment in a manner that involves messing with the integrity/appearance/surface of the car. I've owned German/Japanese cars all my life and never had the "circle" before...looks kinda silly in my opinion. One would THINK they could figure out another way to secure the vehicle for shipment! Anyway, thanks for the response....
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
Really. Nor is it rare. As said before those knockouts are on much more expensive cars. Just another way of doing something. Hardly noticeable.
  • juandehavasujuandehavasu Member Posts: 16
I suspect that Scion being as bright as they seem to be, may have tested the left vs. right placement of the " shipping hook " and that was the pic you viewed on scion.com....probably a prototype. Keep in mind; the height-off-ground of a vehicle would influence how it can be secured during transatlantic shipment...too...if vehicles are being shipped West to East on the Pacific vs. East to West in the Atlantic, then a entirely new equation exits (ie. which side gets the hole for load shift and currents?)... any vehicle being tranported via ship that does not have the "circle" will have an undercarriage attachment point. A good body shop can fill-in the "circle"....or buy U.S. junk and not worry about it.
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
My Nissan has a much less obvious undercarriage "hook"...it in no way involves the painted surface of the vehicle. Had three Nissans..all had the same..VW before that..not sure but it didn't have any cutouts.

The pics on scion.com per their email to me are actual shots of 2006 TC model (only TC has updated 2006 pics) - this is in both the "build your own" section and the gallery.

    Anyway..thanks again for the info!
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
In 2001 I almost bought a fully loaded Mitsu Spyder but for less than two grand more I got a very loaded BWW Z3 so that is my "fun" car.

My other/practical car is a Nissan 240SX 1993 which I LOVE. I've had it this long because I've never had any problems with it and I've never found a car I liked as much.

That being said...age is catching up with 'er and while I love the convertible BMW for long trips and "fun" I need a more practical/affordable everyday car now.

As most have seen here, I am very interested in the Scion TC but just saw the new 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS which is comparable in many ways now including engine size, horsepower, tire size (Mit a bit wider?) and even audio on the steering wheel..with the incredible option package that includes a 650 watt stereo that is.

So...I'd love any input or discussion on this comparison. Compared to the 2005 Eclipse..the TC was for sure the winner...the 2006 not so sure now..mainly because now they really are much more comparable, at least when I "build" them each with everything I want. And yeah I'm a sucker for powerful stereo systems.

The TC wins though for being a bit more roomy in the back seat AND for cargo hauling with my favorite...HATCHBACK. And if I get that stereo and other upgrades package in the Mitsu...it includes a huge component that goes in the trunk..one reason I wasn't gonna get the subwoofer in the TC.

I priced them both out with ALL options I would want. My TC gets to about $20K, the Eclipse GS right at $22K. Both have MP3 player, steering wheel audio controls, etc. I don't own an IPOD so no concern there.

A couple of questions I hope folks can answer here for me. I am very short...and in test drives of Eclipse's / Spyders before..I noticed a huge problem with lack of visibility out of the rear window due to the curve and what used to be a way too tall spoiler...like the pedastal one offered for the TC. The 2006 Eclipse GS still has the odd curve/shaped windown but the huge spoiler looks to be gone and replaced by a lip one similar to what is available also for the TC.

Would LOVE to hear from other SHORT women re: the TC (and/or 2006 Eclipse if they've tested one out). And from anyone who has reviewed the 2006 models for both vehicles. THANKS!

The cutout is also for towing the vehicle in the event that you need such a service. I.e. It gets pulled onto a flat-bed via this point. It's explained quite well in the owners manual.

Hey guys I was wondering how much extra horse power average does the trd exhuast give my Scion tC, thanks
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
In addition to comparing to Mitsubishi Eclipse GS, also would like to hear thoughts comparing 2006 Mustang to TC....and I too wonder about the exhaust option...price seems high to be just cosmetic. The above person might be asking about another exhaust but I'd like to know about the Scion option..is it just "pretty"?
  • got_vtecgot_vtec Member Posts: 22
It is probably worth looking at those two cars (Eclipse and Mustang), but I don't think I can do it. The Scion should be a lot more reliable. I can't decide if I even like the new Mustang styling either.

As for powerful stereo systems, I like wiring custom systems. (I wonder how hard it would be to integrate an aftermarket amp into, for example, the base system? That way, you'd still have the controls on the wheel....) If you like bass, you can pretty easily add a subwoofer onto an existing system too... but I have to admit, I like the "hidden" subwoofer design for the Scion. Less mess.

I think that the tC is a neat car. I've just about convinced myself that it has enough passenger room in the back seat (though I want to look at that again), but as others have said earlier in the topic, I wish it had a bit more performance. I would like to try a manual shift model, though. In the smaller cars, sometimes manual makes a big difference. (Unfortunately, the local dealer has virtually nothing to look at, much less a manual...)

I think if I were stuck with a <$20k price, this would be my top pick, but I can afford something more as well. I just have a problem spending a lot of money on a car. :-) Ah, decisions, decisions....
  • aeroluvraeroluvr Member Posts: 42
Got vtec..sounds like we are in the same boat..I could go the extra few thousand but don't really want to..especially since I bought the Z3 for my "fun" splurge in 2001. So this car needs to be practical.

I still wonder WHY OH WHY Nissan quit the 240SX hatchback line..the reliability factor and resale value alone justifies it. I waited for YEARS to see what they would come up with only to be hugely disappointed with the 350...too much money, too little car (as is space, etc).

Neither of the other two have the hatchback which I don't know if I could "live" without...the cargo abilitiy with it is truly amazing...even though trunks have seats that fold down too there is usually a "hard top" that limits the true vertical cargo space.
  • johnnyringojohnnyringo Member Posts: 31
I too have the means to buy just about any car I want under 50K... but I don't place that much importance on a car... got a mortgage you know... but I traded in my full size dodge 1500 extended cab super truck for a 5 speed manual tC (autos IMO in a sports car are for gilrs)... I did this because of gas prices and the distance to and from work... 70miles round trip every day... To answer your question about roominess... I have 3 children 12years, 10 years and 2 years plus my wife... we were all able to pack into the tC for a 1200 mile trip from the twin cities to austin tx... the rear is better for 2 when your dealing with full size people but it has the most leg room i've ever seen in a small car... the back seat is lacking abit in head room for people taller than 6' though... with the caviat that the back seats recline to kinda deal with that... The front seat is very roomy for the legs... again you have to lean the seat back to gain head room...I'm 6'2" and this is the first car that I have ever owned where i had to move the seat up to reach the peddles...as far as power... well if you understand that this is a compact... not to be compaired with eclipsis or mustangs... it has 160hp in a small body... I am somewhat of a speed deamon and i have raced a few punk kids in mini cooper S's and smoked em', civic Si and smoked em', acura rsx beat me by a bit... not as bad as i thought he would though.... what i'm getting at is for the price I can smoke the tires in 1st and second gear with a respectible 3 gear scratch... I'm gonna need new tires soon... but sense I saved soooo much money on this car I can afford it... I suggest that you really shop around... only then will you see the value of the tC... Lots of cars to choose from in this class but bigger sticker prices for less creature comforts... :)

If you talk to the dealer he told me that it doesn't add any extra horse power... its for looks and sound... i have tried alot of little things to increase hp such as cold air intake, super spark plugs... nothing is noticable... if you want more hp get a different car or go for a supercharger or turbo system.... thats really the only way you will feel a real difference... you can also tub out your car... make it much lighter... :shades:

Does the exhaust option create a very loud exhaust sound? Just wondering as in CA they frown on that and besides..I'm a bit too old to put out the "racer" signal LOL. That being said I liked the LOOK of it...and other cars offer a chrome exhaust but for a lot less which is why I wondered what else this exhaust offered...well if anyone on here gets it...let us know how LOUD is LOUD OK?

just wondering if anyone knows what'll be new with the '07 Tc, and when it will be released. I'm planning to buy a Tc in a month or two, and am debating whether I sould wait 10 months or so for the 07 to come out.
