Let's have you run those numbers using the EU2000 at ~46 lbs.

And what I'm suggesting is that instead of firing up and running a 1.5L Prius engine JUST to recharge the batteries why not use a 6HP Honda engine that undoubtedly will be a LOT more fuel efficient if the only task required of the moment is a recharge.

Since we're NOT here to discuss politics, I've taken down the last couple of posts that have headed us in that direction. Let's stick to discussing the Prius here please.

Understanding the "B" has been sorely underexplained by dealers & Toyota in my opinion. Getting the "Owner's Manual " out and investigating this "B" feature @ the shift contol does however clear the air for the most part. Too often I've heard several folks refer to the "B" as "boost".....wrong!! The "B" is, as Toyota explains, engine braking mode. Lacking anymore significant explanation, Toyota simply shows a piture of a Prius going downhill useing the "B" position to give added engine braking. Obviously this mode helps to add "drag" to the cars tranny helping to slow the vehicle without excessive foot pedel braking. On page 135 of the Owner's Man. it indicates that you "CAN" put the shift lever in "B" from "D" while downhill driving. This, I think, Toyota could explain better than they do. As an owner, I've noticed several other owners indicate confusion about the "B" position.
My wife and I even disagreed about how to shutdown the Prius. I thought you should press "Park" position then "START" to turn everything off. She said to just press "START for off from Drive and then exit car. She was right! I was wrong! Boy that was some serious humble pie I ate that time. Just goes to show that the Prius and its new inovative system of starting can be intimidating to a novice until mastered. :confuse:

P.S. One good thing about the starting sys. of the Prius would be the fact that a thief would skip the Prius because its no piece of cake to figure out. Takes too much time to figure out.

Is there a way to find out what will be different on the 2006 model? I really wish there were some more luxury stuff, like leather and power seats and a sun/moon roof.
    thx
  • cowboy3cowboy3 Member Posts: 1
Well - there's no see-thru top, but there's leather - and a rumor that power seats might be available too. In addition, the headlamp and rearlamp assemblies are "freshened", and there's a new look to the front grill. A tire pressure sensor will be standard. Note the new colors too.

there are still some 05 in the market if you are persistent! Just scored 1 @ MSRP last weekend!

So Cal dealerships have wildly different attitudes, policies, and prices. About half are happy to put my name on a waiting list (wait 1-2 mos), some with a required refundable down payment and some without that requirement. All are asking for MSRP with no markup, which is what I expected from the big dealership I went to recently but then found they wouldn't come down below 26!

The other half don't have any in stock and don't have any idea when they'll get any in--they never mention the option of ordering one. It's like they're not interested in the Prius (or my business!).
I put my name on several waiting lists. Looking forward to my new toy arriving!
  • ncommonsncommons Member Posts: 3
So I'm in Northern Cal - and I just put a $500 refundable deposit on a 2006 Prius - so excited!
Dealer said I could probably get it in Dec-Jan. Also, that new options include leather seats and MP3 connection support that includes powering for iPods, and 2 new colors. I'm waiting to pick my color until they know the colors...I just would love a really pretty color, but odds are against that. No idea which color I'd pick, otherwise.

Try and defer delivery until 1/1/06 and you'll get a nice fat juicy tax credit!
  • catskillguycatskillguy Member Posts: 6
I just put in an order for one at Geis Auto Mall in Peekskill NY.. MSRP, no other fees (Dealer prep, paperwork fee, open the door fee...). He did say the MSRP could change bewteen now & delivery in January. Said, no problem if I wanted to cancel, they would just sell it to the next person ;)

A bery easy, non-pressure, matter of fact sale deal.
  • ncommonsncommons Member Posts: 3
It's a trade-off: wait until 2003 and get the tax credit, but then you've waited an extra month and may not get the HOV carpool sticker (they could run out). I know, paranoid perhaps, but I really want that sticker! lol
  • tamiam2tamiam2 Member Posts: 1
Does anyone have any dealership recommendations in Northern Cal? I'd like to put my name on the list for a 2006 Prius! Thanks!

Does anyone know the cargo capacity of the current-gen Prius? With rear seats up/ down? TIA

Does anyone know Prius availability in New England? Or any good dealers? I'm in the metro-Boston area, thinking of ordering an '06. TIA!

16.1 Cu Feet with seats up

I can't seem to find the specs for volume with the seat down. The Toyota website is probably the dumbest I've seen. "Comparisons by Edmunds"? Huh? I go to their website to check out what they provide for numbers, not another website's numbers.

BTW, speaking of our hosts, Edmunds, they have an excellent new car section that has the specs (but again, without cargo capacity with the seats down).

It seems to me that I remember a value of around 32 Cu feet with the seats down, but I have no link to provide the numbers, so take it with a shaker of salt...

What is the "dealer prep fee" (how much and why???) and what is the "open the door fee"???? and how much and why????? I have heard of dealer prep fees (which is ridiculous) but never and "open the door fee!!!! (that sound even more ridiculous)
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
    I can't resist ;)

I wouldn't be surprised to hear about a Fee fee eventually!

If buyers pay these add-ons dealers will be empowered to add them. I wish car buyers were stronger when it comes time to get up and walk out the door. Years ago when I went with my daughter to buy her first car. She was panicked when I said let's get out of here. She really wanted that little Ford Escort. When they ran us down in the parking lot and agreed to my terms, my daughter was thrilled. She saved $30 per month and cut 6 months off the loan. To this day she is brutal when it comes to buying cars. Anyone that walks in and pays what the dealer is asking for any car has more money to waste than I have.

I'm flying to Phoenix this weekend and was thinking of renting a Prius II instead of any other car. Called up Fox/EV Rental but their phone keeps ringing and no one picks up. Finally gave up and searched if anyone else had Prius to rent out. None so far.
I own a Prius I but am very interested to try out the Prius II over the week I'll be in Phoenix. Any leads will be highly appreciated

Just to let you all know, I put myself on the Prius list four months ago without a $500 hold on it, not only agreed by a sales rep but did not even ask for one. Just checked, and they took me off the list for no reason, and did not bother to let me know. Now they want me to hand over $500 to hold a car sometime in the future..... I said, Good by
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
The Toyota dealer near me uses the phone method. When they get Prius or HH in the salesmen all have their lists of potential customers. They start calling and the first customer through the door with the money gets the car.

I think its in referance to Honda Hybrid (the other hybrid people are lining up to buy).
By the way .......They're both great hybrids. I own an '04 Prius w/ 23 K miles on it and I think I've just about got her broke in. Of all the 50 plus cars I ever bought the Prius is by far the most interesting and enjoyable car to come along in years. Simply put...A SMART CAR for these times.

Several fees (dealer prep, handling, paper work, temporary plates, etc) are reasonably normal when the fees are, like I said, reasonable. Unfortunitly YOU, the buyer, must be knowledgable, prepared and a step ahead of pushy sales people. If you don't like a salesman for various reasons ask for the sales mgr. and request a different one or bring it to the attention of top brass. If you don't like the "price" say so. If you're trading in a car know what it is worth wholesale and be reasonable. Cars have dropped in value the last 6 months. Also know your credit rating. It's best to have your own financing on hand B/4 you settle on a deal.
Lastly, be prepared to pay MSRP on a Prius....Thats the norm. Anything less is a blessing to say the least. I wish you well in your endeavors. Keep us posted.

HH is the Highlander Hybrid. For those that the Prius is just too small.

I went to a Fremont dealer today and got the following:

    -05 Prius
-order now, wait is 1 to 3 months (but salesman said the last one came in 3 wks)
    -three packages: #3 B1 $23,500, #4 AM $24,500, #6 $27,000

If I wanted one now, he could get me one with dealer-installed leather for $5000 over MSRP, but did not ask which msrp that was based on.
  • aleknitaleknit Member Posts: 6
i had the leather installed on mine.. after market its around 900 bucks. made all the difference in the world. I didn't like the cloth seats at all. you can have it installed on any model you get.
If you have to wait, I would wait for 06 model and even look for a dealer on the net. if you can save a few bucks and get it sooner a weekend in frisco or la is always fun.
I got mine about 2 months ago, and love it.. walked into the dealership he had 2 this one was loaded and I drove it home that nite.
  • falcononefalconone Member Posts: 1,726
HH is the Highlander Hybrid. It's for people that need great mileage in an SUV package. The Prius is pretty nice sized too! Did you know that it has more rear legroom than a Mercedes E Class???? A lot of people don't realize how big the Prius really is!! It can hold quite a bit. I hope you enjoy the buying experience.
  • nortsr1nortsr1 Member Posts: 1,060
Dealer installed leather for $5000.00 over MSRP. That's even better than the "open the door" add-on, which we still have not had a reply to that one. That leather must be from an "endangered specie" of the rarest animal in the world.
  • charlotte7charlotte7 Member Posts: 144
Has anyone bought a Prius in Central Texas? What was the experience like/what dealership did you use?

I'm thinking about a Prius, but I don't want any packages, just the plain Prius. How difficult would it be to get just a plain Prius? Has anyone bought one?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You might want to consider getting at least the side airbags/curtains package. They can help a lot to protect you and your passengers in side collisions, plus they will probably add to the resale value of the car because more and more cars come with side bags and curtains.

Does anyone know if you can use the hybrid tax deduction for a Prius lease in NY?
  • railroadjamesrailroadjames Member Posts: 560
Alot is said about the Prius (MPG's, Green, etc) but ain't it nice to talk about the rarely discussed "backseat." First test drive I told my wife to get in and drive while I settled in the backseat. Boy!! Right away I `couldn't help but notice the huge ample space for legroom and seating that was downright comfortable. Then there were the little things like....pockets in the back of front seats, cup holders, fold down arm-rest, easy access togetting in & out. Two side fold-down backrests, storage cover, loads of storage in the back(check it out you'll be surprised... And much more!

    seating that was downright comfortable

The Prius cab driver I talked to in Victoria, BC, said his customers liked the car. His company had replaced 40% of their cars with the Prius. I have not seen any Prius cabs yet in CA.

Did anyone see Fox News where they were talking about the guy who left Texas because of Rita and drove for over 30 hours and still had a 1/4 tank of fuel. They were impressed. Granted I bet most of it was stop and go with stop being the most part of the 30 hours. :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Those evacuations would be idea for a HSD car like the Prius I guess--the engine is off most of the time (probably wouldn't be able to run A/C, but then I talked to a friend from Houston and he said no one had A/C on because they wanted to save gas).
  • railroadjamesrailroadjames Member Posts: 560
This should show that, in a pinch, stuck in traffic like the "Mass Exodus" from the horrific hurricanes a hybrid seems well suited to get you out of "Dodge City." B/4 the big gunfight with Rita or Katrina. Having the ability to go 500-600 miles on a tank of 11 gallons of gas sure has to give solice to someone trying to get clear of trouble.
If ever there comes a time when "gas rationing" becomes a reality a hybrid again seems a blessing. Take note below:

    Hummer ..38 gallon tank....9 mpg's....342 miles max
    Prius........12 gallon tank..49 mpg's....588 miles max
estimates that can vary but close to general range :shades:

  • falcononefalconone Member Posts: 1,726
I noticed that most of the stranded vehicles were gas hogs. I enjoyed reading the numerous blogs of folks evacuating with their hybrids. One thing I don't understand is why they just didn't drive south into Mexico :confuse: :confuse:
  • railroadjamesrailroadjames Member Posts: 560
ACTUALLY ......Many did head south. Unfortunitly Mexican border officials & police were limiting entrance at some points. Plus...Think about it. Just where are you going to go exactly? I think that its unfortunate that our transportation system lacks the know how and the systems (railroad) to do mass evacuations. I only hope we learned our lessons well. Maybe we should give credence to auto and railroad manufacturers to assist our problems.

The '04 -'05 Prius has been noted with areas that many owners have indicated need improvements. Tires, Fit & finish, leather uphostery, controls, etc are just some of the items that have been mentioned. Then there's the desire for improvements like : sunroofs and moderate towing capacity. For RVers there's the question as to towability. Toyota can listen to buyers and gain more of our confidance and the ultimate goal....A better Prius! WaLaaa!!

    www.hybridautomobile.us

Is supposively being introduced by Toyota to compare US gas prices/hybrid efficiency against other cars. They must be doing this since they know the Prius is on top.

As of now, the site is nothing, but I'll keep checking. I'm interested to see the exact breakdowns, including the Lexus model, which I heard the mpg statistics they've been releasing are skewed. Anyway, this all coming from an "Hybrid Insider" newsletter, so I guess take it for what it's worth.

I didn't see the posting on here with Toyota's official list of features....I did a Google search on it, and just came across it on their Press Release site. Here it is in case anyone is still wondering...

Exciting to finally see what the 2006 packages look like....now I can finally go out and place my order for January delivery!
  • falcononefalconone Member Posts: 1,726
Yes.... the leather looks really nice. I also like the leather wrapped steering wheel. Quite a nice offering. Did you notice the nice stub for the antenna? This car keeps getting better and better. At 26.X k it's such a bargain!! Can't wait to get mine!
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'm finding the option packages on the '06's kind of confusing. I've heard the JBL stereo is not that great. I definitely want the side air-bags. Wondering what people think about the VSC & SKS? It's leading me towards Package #6--but it all depends on the price. If Package #6 is $3K or more, I might consider #4 & go w/o the HID's. Any advice? And when will pricing be available? TIA!
  • falcononefalconone Member Posts: 1,726
Definitely get the SKS and VSC. I also suggest getting a package with the curtain airbags. The Xenons are nice but if you live in the city/suburbia you really wouldn't even notice their effectiveness. Good luck! I am on deck for a loaded Prius. Can't wait!!!
  • pduboispdubois Member Posts: 73
I am planning to buy a loaded 2006 Prius in the spring of 06. I was told by the Open Road dealer in Richmond, BC (Canada) to place my order in January. Has anyone got better pricing than MSRP in the lower mainland? Open Road is a "no-haggling" Toyota dealer and sells all cars at MSRP. I am wondering if there are other Toyota dealers (lower mainland or online for Canada) who do negotiate the price (particularly for the loaded models where there is more profit)? Thanks!
  • falcononefalconone Member Posts: 1,726
Probably going to be MSRP. In the states there will be a big run on the Prius and other hybrids to take advantage of a nice fat juicy tax credit.
