I also had a Mark VIII which I'm almost positive had the same engine as the Aviator (4.6L, around 300hp, right? - Mark was 270hp) and that engine was bulletproof. Sis-in-Law is driving it now at 175K and is real happy. She's had typical air shock problems, but elsewise is happy.
All this and I close with I'm real sorry and surprised the Aviator has been a problem for so many people. How can Ford(Lincoln) expect repeat customers when they build cr@p like this? :confuse:
What I don't understand (other than the engine which is different) is why the Aviator seems to have so many more problems than the Explorer.
But really, fan or not, it's hard to take when u spend $45000 or more of your hard-earned money on a vehicle that turns out to have been better left in the scrap yard.
Things like this are what causes people (and I know lots of them, though I aint one) to say "I'll never buy another American car."
Every manufacturer has known defects at some point. The fact is these problems don't affect every vehicle - overall it's probably a small percentage. If it was 5K miles past the warranty then it's a better argument, but they have to cut it off somewhere.
My point is that you're expecting Ford to do something that NO OTHER MASS MARKET mfr would do - not Honda, not Toyota, etc.
Also, isn't this the same engine in the Mustang GT? Is the GT also showing this type of problem?
I'm not sure if the same engine is in the gt, don't quote me on this but I might have read something to that affect. Hope this helps
You have the same problem as we all have with this engine.
I will find the TSB number for you.
We also have one [an 03, with 7k left to pay], and I was trying to talk my wife into keeping it...but I have noticed a slight vibration and the rear decal issue. It's a beautiful SUV, but we've gone through some of the other issues that others have talked about on this forum, not knowing they were common issues. Like, getting our transmission replaced, water leaks around window seals, premature brake and tire wear, and a crack around the keypad entry area.
I think I'll push for a off-lease RX400h.
Thanks!
Thanks
Had I been aware of TSBs while still under warranty, I would have opted to buy the extended warranty even if no problems had surfaced at that time (my warranty expired in May 08)....to see all of the issues in TSBs now that I've been burned is alarming. I'm already looking into other vehicles and getting rid of this one...loved the style of it, but I am not willing to risk keeping it any longer. I grew up in a family of Lincoln owners and this was my 2nd and likely, my last. It's funny that while mine was in the shop, my dad was looking at a new Navigator....this situation may have changed his mind as well.
I owned a 03 Aviator but got rid of it shortly after the warranty expired. The left head was replaced under warranty. It was a piece of junk but I replaced it with a 2008 Edge Limited that has been flawless as has my 06 Fusion. And the Aviator is no longer made.
After about 3 or 4 cold starts, the engine light on our Aviator will go off and stay off unless we allow our vehicle to idle for a few seconds. Anytime we are sitting at a traffic light or in park, we give it a little gas to push the RPM's to 1,000 and this keeps the engine light from coming back on. If we ever forget to do this, the engine light comes on until 3 or 4 cold starts again.
I hope this keeps working for us and right now with an additional 30,000 miles since the problem was first detected, it looks like it is. Hopefully your vehicle will act in the same manner.
Please give us an update later on and let us know if this works for you too. Good luck!
But I will be honest, I am afraid to keep this Lincoln ONE MINUTE out of warranty.
I was planning on not buying a warranty as I brought it there for the 1. Lift gate (Not Covered) 2. Sun Roof (not covered) 3. Electronic Door Switch (Not covered)
My dealer ALWAYS has some excuse why it isn’t covered, so unless it needed an Engine, I didn’t plan on going back to a Ford dealer period. BUT NOW IT JUST MIGHT NEED AN ENGINE!!!
Does anyone know the percentage of Aviators this effected? Also, for the future, does the "PowertrainCare" warranty cover this, if I do decide to keep this SUV.
My fear is some stipulation in the contract that this isn’t covered, the same way so many little things (sunroof and liftgate) are not covered now, in a full premium warranty.
Thanks in advance :confuse:
The powertrain warranty should definitely cover a head replacement. No way they can get out of that one unless they're claiming it's due to improper maintenance and even then that's a stretch.
I don't think this affects a high percentage of Aviators - just a lot more than it should. We actually had ours replaced during the factory warranty and we kept it for about 8 months after the warranty expired, but I was a little nervous. Never had the liftgate problem but did have numerous other small problems.
Good riddance. Got a new Edge and it's been perfect.
Within the past few weeks, with the climate control "OFF", I am getting heat inside the car. I cannot feel any air coming out of the vents, but the interior is definitely
warming up...sometimes to the point where I have to turn on the A/C. The normal heat and A/C are working OK.
Interior of the car still warmed up. Had to turn on the A/C.
The rear heat thing was a great idea...thanks. Seems to be something else.
