Thanks for the info. I'm sure if you dropped down to 60mph you'd be up to at least 26-28 which would a 20% increase or more in mpg or put another way a 20% or more decrease in your gas consumption! With today's prices you'd be saving 80 cents a gallon. Tommorrows might be $1.00. (I'm not preaching. Your driving habits are your own decision.)

What amazes me is cars of this size and vintage can get this kind of mileage when the newer ones are not that much better, if any.

I'm hanging on to mine until it totally dies or they come up with a decent size vehicle that can get 50 mpg! I'll sacrifice horsepower, acceleration and torque. Just get me to 60 mph. I'm no engineer but why do we need 300+ HP? What if we tried 100 hp?

BTW, just heard today GM is considering getting rid of the Hummer. The times, they are a changin!

Thanks for the reply. I think as gas prices go up alot more drivers will be paying attention to how they drive. I think if anyone gives some effort to how they drive they could increase their mpg by at least 20% or more!. Just imagine if the whole country drove more carefully with fuel consumption in mind. We'd have fewer accidents. They wouldn't be as severe. We'd import 20% less oil. There would be less road rage. Your stress level would decrease when driving. On and on. And that's just scratching the surface. We could do all that without changing anything else. Just our own driving style! :)

Mine is Lincoln 93 model town car and has 1, 38000 miles on it. Until now It was fine, just today one spark plug was not working and the car began to shake. After that I noticed white smoke coming from the tail pipe very much. No Engine heat. what should I do?
  • peachpie56peachpie56 Member Posts: 6
Not an expert. I've got the same year TC with about 140K miles. What does no engine heat mean? Alot of white smoke from the tailpipe could mean its burning coolant from a leaking head gasket. Check your coolant reservoir for a large drop in the level. Did you just buy this car or do know it's history?
  • rameshjrameshj Member Posts: 4
I meant that the Engine is not over heated. Today I took to the mechanic and he said that there is some oil in the tail pipe and it is not the problem of Engine.
  • rameshjrameshj Member Posts: 4
Normally how many miles can a lincoln town car get before you get any major trouble with the Engine? I heard some people say that these cars are good for at least 350000 miles. Is it right? I got this car one year back and I dove at least 16,000 miles in one year and until now there are total of 136,000 miles and absolutely no problem just with the smoke in the tail pipe I posted yesterday but we need to wait and see if the anlysis of the mechanic is right or not. any advice?
  • nwraaanwraaa Member Posts: 177
You may just have a plug that is misfiring. Keep the engine tuned and maintained, change the oil regularly, and don't abuse the engine and you can easly get a quarter of a million miles out of the 1993 Town Car engine.

Hi....I have had my car for a year and a half, no problems at all. This morning, I tried to leave for work, and the car would not start. It is getting juice, all of the lights work fine.....I cleaned the battery cables...there was a bit of corrosion...checked the fuses...all of them good. I have a half a tank of gas, and when I crank it, I can't smell any fuel. When I step on the accellerator, I smell no fuel. Any suggestions?

Just thought I would let you know that after having starter fluid sprayed up the tube to the manifold, it started. Turned it off, waited a few minutes, and it started again. No waring lights - I will try it again tonight before I go to bed. Once - fluke, twice - problem. Glad there is a forum - just thought I'd let you know what was up.

My lincoln towncar 1993 model has done crazy things which I posted previous. The brake booster failed and the brake fluid entered into Engine but did not effect the engine. The car is shaking at the sped of 40mph. The mechanic found that one of the fuel injecor was pumping fuel continuos and he could not figure out why. The computer is showing no problem but the shaking problem is not yet fixed. Any ideas what should I do?

Does anyone know how to replace the drivers side low beam headlamp on a 2003 towncar?
  • adjusteradjuster Member Posts: 22
Open hood. There is a large black cover in the front of the engine compartment up to the front of the car. There are 4 little knobs that hold it on. Turn them 1/4 to 1/2 turn counterclockwise and the cover will lift off. The headlamp is mounted in a large socket with three rather large wires in the rear of the headlight lens. It turns 1/2 turn counterclockwise to remove. Remove lamp and get another just like it, then reverse the above procedure. Look in your manual, it will give you the part number of the lamp. This is a very easy job that requires no tools. ;)

    Hi you all.
Recently I bought a 2007 Lin. T.C the engine plastic decoration cover (you know) was not in place. I asked the sales person he said due to overheating this cover is removed. I asked the service specialist at the dealer he said that he had no reports on that. ???
Anyone knows out there which is which? Cover or no cover??
    Thanks

You've been a victim of sales junk. The engine would be MORE  likely to overheat WITHOUT the cover. Find one at a junk yard or make the dealer replace the one that is missing. I'd wonder about the car being in a serious accident or otherwise needing major work where the cover was so damaged it couldn't be used again or was lost. You need it, get one somewhere.

There are a few things that will trigger the light and the latest I've discovered is driving at altitudes of 5,000 feet and higher. The car runs fine, gas economy is great, but at higher altitudes the light goes off & on. Currently, we are now at 2,000 feet & the light has stayed off since desending from the Alberta Rockies, Waterton, & Glacier N.P. It teased off & on from Whitefish, MT & to the ID border.

The Town Car is a 94, with Handling Package, 140,000 miles & a new air filter was installed at 138,000. Thus, if the air is too thin, the Check Engine light will go on.

Some things are not to be concerned about and this is one of them.

My 06 cobalts powersterring just recently went out and ive only had it for a year and i cant afford to fix it  and being that my husband is in the military a car dealership is letting him purchase a town car with no down payment because he will be deployed to iraq in a couple of months and we need a reliable car. Its a 03 model and i was just wondering if it was expensive to maintain this car and it has 62,000 miles on it. the mileage is not bad but being that it is so low would that make me think it was in a wreck or something. Should i purchase it or what?

FYI I have a 1993 TC Sig series 2nd owner. 128K miles Only major repair has been the Auto temp control actuator door motor @ $800 cause they had to take the whole dash apart. Car runs like new get 23mpg I love it! I rented a 2008 in Hawaii and that rode great too.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
The '03 was a big improvement over previous models.

If it is 5.5 years old, 11,272 miles per year is low miles.

Our '94 has 141,000 miles and the only major expense has been replacing the gears in the differential @ 97,000 and Lincoln paid 1/2 of that expense because their factory lube was defective.\

Take it for a 50 mile test drive. If it passes, buy it.

I have a 1998 town with a bad engine temperature sensor. the temperature reads normally until about half way in the gauge then jumps to max. I read the codes and turned out the temperature sensor was bad. I have already purchased the new sensor and I am trying to put it in the car now. I can't find its location. It thought it would be by the thermostat but I could not find it there. I would greatly appreciate any help someone could give me with the location of the sensor. thanks.

I have a 1988 lincoln town car. I am having trouble with the heater controls. The heat setting is on the hottest setting and the defroster blows out cold air. If I move the control to the floor on heat hottest setting it blows outside air. Thermostat works and engine gets the normal temperature. Does anyone have any ideas. Could this be a bad heater control valve?
  • nwraaanwraaa Member Posts: 177
The heater control valve is a good place to start. This valve may be stuck. The system has another vacuum motor that also needs to be checked.
  • jayg2jayg2 Member Posts: 10
    nwraaa,
Thanks for the information. Where is that vacuum motor located?
  • nwraaanwraaa Member Posts: 177
The other vacuum motor is under the dash board. Take a flashlight and look under the dash board about midway of the car. You should see the vacuum motor with vacuum hoses attached to it.

On my 1995 Town Car, the passenger window will not go up by itself. Once I get it up, it will normally go down with the button. I can run the button up, and then lift the window manually. I've searched this website and pretty well figured out it may be the motor that needs changing. I removed the door trim and am looking at the motor and regulator mechanism. My question is, do I remove all the rivets? There are three holding the motor, two bolts at the top that hold the metal guide (is that the regulator, or is the whole unit called the regulator) and two rivets at the bottom of the guide. Then there are two rivets clamping the window to its lifting device. Do I take all those rivets out to get the unit out of the door? It's a lot tighter inside that door than a van regulator I changed on my Villager. Any suggestions or answers to my questions will be greatly appreciated.
  • nwraaanwraaa Member Posts: 177
To keep the window up, put two long screw drivers below the window through the door under the window. Drill out the rivets and unscrew the motor. I have found that in most instances either the wire in the regulator is frayed or the small cylindrical balls in the gear mechanism are broken. Fix or repalce the regulator. There are usually a number them for sale on E-bay. Use small bolts and nuts to repalce the rivets.

Need suggestions!!! My town car has a new battery, and all fuses have been checked and are good. Everything electrical is working...Headlights, tail lights. interior lights, power seats, etc. When key is turned, you can hear the fuel pump delivering fuel, but engine does nothing. No clicking, thumping, anything!! Starter was checked at the dealer about 2 months ago and said to be fine. Only thing I've noticed is that it is very sluggish going in to Park. A few times, I've had to move gears a few times, then back in to park and it started. That isn't working anymore. Where should I look first?
  • izaclown1izaclown1 Member Posts: 118
Will it crank in neutral? It may be the switch in the gear shifter??
  • cardsnappercardsnapper Member Posts: 7
same as in park. I hear buzz of fuel being delivered, but no crank, or clicking, or thumping......nothing!
  • izaclown1izaclown1 Member Posts: 118
My 2000 did something similar, but would would start in neutral. The brake engagement switch went bad. Sorry,I cannot help you out.

I think I know your problem fix. It is called a rain hat. It is on the passengers side. You have to remove the plastic section under the windshield wiper. Now you can access the oval plastic piece. I don't remember but there are just a few screws that hold it down. There is a foam gasket between the piece and the cowl that deterioriates and you have to scrape it off realy clean on both the rain hat and if there is any on the metal of the cowl. After cleaning it you need to put a 1/4" bead of silicone on the rain hat ( it doesn't hurt to be generous applying it) and the install the plastic rain hat. Try and keep it dry for 24 hours and your leak will be fixed. That is a very common problem and this should fix your problem

The turn signals and 4 way flashers stopped working on my 97 Towncar. I replaced the light control module, but the problem is still there. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your responses.

Checked out the vacuum motor under the dash. The lever moves for each setting. Defroster still blows cold air. Is there any other thing I can look for?

Condinuity and vacuum check out on the thermal blower lockout switch.

    Thanks,

The latch on my (drivers)seatbelt broke. Anyone know where I can pick up a new or used drivers seatbelt buckle and belt. Just the short part that goes into the seat and is held in place with a nut. I checked with the dealer and they want $104. for a new one.

As we all know the trunks on Lincolns close by themselves once you presented it to the latch, here is where my problem lies. I dont know if it could be a fuse that went bad or if the little motor that closes the trunk broke, because my trunk stays ajar. I try to close it but it just clicks on to the latch and stays there without going down by itself. Can someone help me with this please., i need to fix it asap.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
This happened to our 94 and my son took a wire and made a connection between two places on the pull down motor. When we got the latch down in the right spot, we let it be and now I just shut the trunk like you do on other Fords, but the automatic release still works.

I know my car really well. Most of the problems have been posted by others in the forum over the year but I have an electrical problem that I can't shake. I was thinking of getting my car rewired but this is a cry for help or suggestions to save money. I have a 20 amp fuse under the stirring column that blows after about a few days of installing. I works my power seat(most switches) and my interior lights. I can turn my lights on with the car switched on by pressing the front and rear fixtures but the headlight switch and opening the doors won't activate the interior lights when the fuse is blown. The cigar lighters also works by that fuse. Is there anywhere else that I can check to see what's causing the fuse to blow. :confuse:

AFTER A BAD OIL CHANGE AT WALLMARTS I CANNOT GET THE REAR AIR BAGS TO COME DOWN. (1997 LINCOLN TC)
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR THAT?

    PLEASE HELP!!
  • adjusteradjuster Member Posts: 22
Open your trunk, look on the driver's side wall and turn the switch for the air bags back on. When they put the car on a lift they always turn the switch off, they forgot to turn it back on after they were done.

I just escaped from a very bad situation tonight. Driving home from work just before dark in my 93 TC and all of a sudden I lose all power and the engine dies 10 miles from home. I pull into a subdivision with an upward incline and park it before it starts rolling backwards. I've had the car for about five yrs and I suspected it was the same problem which occured about a yr after I first bought it. The fuel pump. It's electric as you may know. At that time a mechanic replaced it and I still got stuck and he said it was a ground problem.

Anyway it got fixed at that time and hasn't given me any trouble until tonight. So here I am stuck. I call a friend but I don't have the money to get it fixed. I'm screwed I think. I can't even leave it in the subdivision because they will tow all cars not parked in a driveway or garage. It doesn't look good. I try starting it. Nothing. Check the ground connection at the battery. Solid.

Then, out the blue the guy that lives in front of where I parked asked me what's going on and I tell him it's the fuel pump. He says let me see if I can help you. He comes out with a hammer gets under the vehicle and starts banging on the gas tank while I'm trying to start it.

BINGO. It starts!!!! I'm mobile again. This guy saved my shorts tonight and I will repay him some way. Evidently these pumps can stick.

Now my question is. What's the life expectancy of the fuel pump? And how do you replace it?

i bought a tc 2003 , is it recommended to do a computer check for all sensors in my car
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
To reset some computers, all you have to do is cancel their power source by disconnecting the Negative terminal of the battery for an hour. Reconnect & go.

there is another thing that i need your help for ....my kids keeps playing with the driver`s door keyless entry numbers ...can any one tell me how to remove the driver`s door panel so i can disconnect the wires leading to this numbers

This car is hanging in park.

That must be a pretty big tree that it is hanging from.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Your question was understood and my reply still stands.

Don't disconnect the keyless entry numbers, discipline the kids. I've even taught my grandgirls to keep their fingers off the windows and other parts.

my trunk on my 93 wont close all the way is there any way to bypass the power motor which pulls the deck lid tight. any help ? . thank you.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Good News: There is a way using a wire.

Bad News: My son did the trick four years ago on our '94 and I forgot how he did it.

He got the power pull down catch to a position where when you close the deck lid, it is tight and secure. He used a wire to make a connection, but I don't remember where he connected the wire.
