Anyone find after-market custom tail lights for the current generation Frontier yet? I'd like to change what I have but everything I've found is for '04 or older.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 16,789
I seem to recall, on the '05s, anyway, that there was a button on the dash to toggle the ABLS. If toggled on, it would kick in under any one-tire slippage situations. I eventually ruled out the Frontier as a possibility on my shopping list, so have not looked at '06 or '07 models.

Yes it works,I like it when It kicks in going down the hill,it helps you pick up some mpg's.

when going down a steep hill it helps so much.
It a matter of a oppion, other people will tell you different things but thats my take.
    Thumbs up Nissan! :shades:

Please tell me more about the conditions that caused your tailgate to 'fall-off'? I just purchased a nismo KC expecting/hoping it will hold my full size MC with the gate down. I'm not sure if my rear wheel will sit on the tailgate partially..I'll find out soon when I test load it but now I'm concerned with your problem. With the obvious misalignment which should have been fixed by the dealer,it sounds like the whole TG mechanism must have been out of whack?

    Any pictures?

Just curious, if anyone in this group has loaded a goldwing on the nismo KC please tell me your experience.

I just ordered a Class III Hidden-Hitch from JCWhitney for a substantial savings over factory including free shipping! And NO..there is no difference other then convenience except the factory unit may come with a trannie cooler built-in which you can also aftermarket and if your pulling a heavy trailer in the mountains..get one,I am.

Re: conditions for tailgate to fall off - well Nissan has come to the conclusion that the whole bed of my truck was misaaligned from day one and that over time it finally starting showing wear by the tailgate following off while locked. I have not hauled any item of substantial weight other than placing a shell on the top of the bed of the truck. Bad news - dealer would not take responsibilty in fixing - stated it was my fault. Good news the manufacturer Nissan is replacing the entire bed of the truck - it will be inspected prior to delivery to me by a Dealer Tech Specialist and they will be putting on a lock - so that the tailgate can never be stolen/ and I am receiving the Premier Gold extended service plan 100,000 mile/7 year warranty - which covers everything except a few wear and tear items. I personally would not leave my tailgate down w/a MC in the back if I was driving on dirt roads but on the pavement you should not have a problem.

Thanks for the update,I'm glad you found very good satisfaction from Nissan on this issue,it's sometimes hard to believe how dealers even today behave..just curious, who are they?
  • glennbazglennbaz Member Posts: 1
I believe that the "tow package" also includes several electrical relays that must me installed in order for the trailer light wiring to function correctly.

ABLS is a simple system that merely applies the anti-lock brake to a spinning wheel. Nothing more. It's in the circuit all of the time under all conditions and you cannot switch it off. It's very unobtrusive and I like it. ABLS is not to be confused with VDC which is a sophisticated program that monitors vehicle speed, direction, steering wheel input and body lean to maintain driver control.

My 2006 frontier has numerous rock chips on the leading lower portion of the rear bed and frnders. I only drive on paved roads and have less than 6000 km on the vehicle, yet the paint is worn down to bare metal.

    Anyone else experiencing this problem?
  • 2005lekc2005lekc Member Posts: 145
It is a common problem. They just don't make paint like they used to, thanks to government intervention.

    Hi

Sorry to hear of your paint issues on your frontier do you have mud guards and step rails? Do you have pictures?
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
You're right on Okie -- EPA regulations affected the use of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in auto paint and the result has been a much lower quality of paint. Nearly all brands made in the US are suffering from this.

I bought the OEM splash guards and step rails in hope that it might preserve my paint a bit better.
  • mystromystro Member Posts: 64
Actually I've been researching this very problem and found a local shop which sprays on a matching color armor paint like Subaru put's on all their cars,it's a rumberized paint applied on all the critical lower areas..the trick is it's as tough as spray on bedliner but totally matches your paint except for a slight orange-peel finish but who cares..it's not see-able unless your laying on the ground. When I first saw this on my 03 Subraru Legacy I thought it was a painting error. I am especially concerned with the lower grill painted piece and wheel flairs on the 05-07 Frontier..it is definately exposed.

...just another reason why Subaru owners are so loyal :=)

mystro, this is very interesting can you give a little more information on this product please?

If it is not cost prohibitive I would be interested in using it on my truck.

I am planning on buying a SE 2WD crew cab with either a auto transmission or manual 6 spd and I need some information so that I can decide which way to go. Here is my question: Under normal town driving conditions, what speed does the over drive shift in? I prefer the overdrive to shift around 40mph so that I can get the best city mpgs. I hate for the overdrive to kick in and out constantly as I am driving in town. Thanks in advance.
  • 2005lekc2005lekc Member Posts: 145
I have an '05 LE KC 4X2 with a/t and to tell the truth I never have paid any attention to when it is shifting in and out of o/d. I notice sometimes when it shifts, but I have never noticed it hunting for a gear before.

I do take it out of o/d when in steep hills as it will down shift from 5th o/d down to 4th direct which is a pretty good jump.

If I were still young I would probably get the 6 speed because it would give you a little more control and a little bit better power and gas mileage.

If you do a lot of stop and go driving then I would opt for the a/t.

Apparently it is priced very close pricewise to a 3m clear tape application but offers much better *armor* protection.

I went to a professional autmotive paint retailer and he had samples of it spray applied on metal strips and suggested I contact a local ford dealer who'd give a quote for my rocker panels and front end over the phone, they quoted it $300-$400 ballpark and since it's matched to your color it needs to be pro-applied I'm assuming, the drying process is very fast only a couple of hours so it's a quickie drop off. Anyway, for info I got call Russ Dean Ford Body Shop 509-547-2100.

Hey guys, I'm planning on picking up an 05/06 4x4 c/c for daily driving in N.H. We get a decent amount of snow up here so I was wondering how it handles. Also is it worth getting the NISMO over the LE? Not planning on daily trail riding but I was interested in how beneficial the off/road pkg is. Also does the NISMO give you more ground clearance?
    Thanks!
  • mystromystro Member Posts: 64
You can order an Nismo LE or SE and yes it's worth getting since it does not detract from the overall excellent ride (foratruck:) but gives you added *capability* ..the traction package with VDC even more of the above especially since you'll be doing mostly highway..try pricing it as a SE with options.

Well, after following this forum ever since the new improved Frontiers came out I finally bought one. I was tempted to relive my young days of the floor shift but decided on the auto transmission ,and now I am glad that I did. I love it the ride is great, the cabin is quiet and has more power than I will ever need. It's tough to park in some tight places but should get easier as I get use to it and learn some tricks like telling how close I can get to another vehicle with out hitting it. This vehicle is so good in all the other areas that I can overlook tight parking, with no problem. I am still working on my first tank of gas so I can't tell about the mpg yet, I suspect that it will follow the SWB crews. I did notice that the overdrive does drop in around 40 so most of the time while cruising in the city my rpms stay under 1500 which is great.
I will give a mpg report after I am past the break in period. That's all for now folks, stay tuned for more later.

When I picked up my 07 SE LWB crew it had the bed extender with it. Along with the extender there was a notification sheet telling me not to load more than 200 lbs on the tail gate. I usually get up on the tail gate to get into the bed to manuever cargo around, or sometimes just sit or work on the tail gate, weighing in at 270lbs this may be a problem for me. Does anybody here know the weight limit for the 07 crew tail gate ? Thanx in advance.
  • mystromystro Member Posts: 64
As I mentioned earlier I will be carrying a Goldwing so I have to put a 3/4" sheet of plywood 85" long down..this will spread the rear wheel weight since the bike will be sitting partially on the TG. From what I found..just sitting on the tailgate should not be an issue..but carrying that weight bouncing down a road will be..you should be fine, your not going to snap those cables. :)
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Using a sheet of plywood is the way to go when traveling with several hundred pounds of weight on the tailgate.
300 lbs static is not likely to cause a problem. 300 lbs dynamic has been known to cause problems. The hinges seem to be the weak link on the Frontier and the tailgate itself is weak on the Tacoma.
  • stringbenderstringbender Member Posts: 29
So, If I hear you right, it's ok for me to sit my big butt on the tail gate, but not ok to jump up and down on it :)

    Thanx, Steve

I have a '06 Frontier xe with the 4 cyl. I have about 8,000 miles on it and noticed after my second oil change that my "Low Oil Pressure" light would come on only when I locked up the brakes. It doesn't happen under normal stops only when the ABS is needed. I checked the oil level and everything is fine. A trip to the dealership came up inconclusive. They said that will always happen when I lock up the brakes because all of the oil moves forward off the sensor. Since this just started to happen after my second oil change I really don't believe them. Anyone else having this problem???

I have a new 07 SE crew with a auto transmission, and I absolutely love this truck but I am concerned that the engine may have a problem since it seems to have some clicking and knocking noises going on. It's most noticable when driving in town under 50 mph, and when I sm stopped at a red light it almost sounds like a diesel engine. The truck runs and idles perfect and has plenty of power.

I only have aprox 500 miles on it and need to know if this is normal for this engine, if not I will take it in to the shop and see what is going on. Other than that the truck is perfect. Thanks, Steve
  • mystromystro Member Posts: 64
Take it in,knocking/clicking noise is not normal during breakin..hopefully it may be a minor fix.

I bought a 2005 Frontier brand new 4WD SE, and now after only 6600 miles, the dealer says the clutch burnt up. I have been driving stick shifts since the age of 16 (I'm 57), and owning some trucks for as long as 9 years and 160,000 miles in mountainous terrain and NEVER had a problem. Who do we write to at Nissan about this. The dealer accused me of racing or riding the clutch - NOT!! Help - who do we contact???
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
That's terrible about your clutch. I think the owner's manual has a phone number in it to contact Nissan Consumer affairs. You'll probably have an uphill battle. My '06 SE 4x2 CC has 5,500 Miles on it and my clutch is fine so far.
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
Your VQ40 shouldn't be running like that; problems with this engine seem very rare. The dealer will suggest bad gasoline or new ethanol blends; be ready to respond. Hopefully it'll do it for the dealer.

My 1993 Nissan pick-up, bought new, had 219,000 miles with the original clutch when I sold it.

I have a 2006 XE, which doesn't come with an AC filter. Does anyone know how difficult it is to adapt the XE to take the AC microfilter? I have heard that some cutting is necessary. I don't know if it requires some kind of filter housing. tia
  • stringbenderstringbender Member Posts: 29
Well, it seems that I may over reacted. The sounds that I was hearing evidently is common on these engines. I listen to a few new frontiers at the dealer and they sounded the same. The dealer service mgr told me that the clicking I was hearing was from the injectors. For now I am not going to worry about it at least unless some other problems come up, if it gets louder then I will try another dealer service.
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
My '06 SE has developed a slight tick at idle speed that it didn't have when new, but it's unobtrusive. I was once worried about it, but have decided that it's nothing to worry with. I have a cheapie 'engine ear' stethoscope and it's not injectors in my case. I can't locate an origin, but then again the sound is slight.
  • stringbenderstringbender Member Posts: 29
Who knows what all these sounds are as long as the engine doesn't miss and runs good. This truck is so much better than my Chevrolet Colorado, when I bought it in 04 which was the first year, this vehicle had engine sound issues galore and although it ran good, it constantly had cab rattles and wind noise, the ac was crappy, the front end would not stay alighned and it rode like crap, oh yeah the radio sounded like crap. The poor Chevy dealers never could fix these problems because they were design problems. That's why a little clicking or ticking noise is not going to bother me, at least I know the truck has so many other things going for that it's worth keeping, even if it has to go to the shop sometime. :)
  • oxmeadoxmead Member Posts: 79
I've had my 07king cab LE 2wd for about 2 months now. I really miss my Infiniti G20, but I needed a truck. I was feeling some vibration in the gas and brake petals, but finally figured out that it was the base on the radio. The audio package was a good choice and I'm getting to like the satelite radio. My big gripe is the panic button on the key fob. Why does it have to be so sensitive( .5 second). If I throw the keys on the counter it goes off. Gas mileage is about 19 in mixed driving. I also like all the storage areas and cup and bottle holders. My drivers seat cushion is showing some wear, so I may have them change it when I take it for an oil change.
  • dalodalo Member Posts: 2
Well, after shopping around I purchased an 05 NISMO with 10k miles on it. I made a road trip that night from NRFK VA to Keene NH (10 hrs) as my road test. It performed great. Since then I have had to utilize the 4wd option quite a few times due to snow and mud season roads. The Anti Slip has done so well it's taken some of the fun out of it. The bigger tires and sturdy suspension has made a tremendous difference dealing with the frost heaves and less than perfect plow jobs.
Anyhow, just to reiterate I couldnt be happier with this truck!
Anyone know of any Northeast Frontier groups or website's?

P.S. Test drove a Toyota and it just didn't feel as substantial as the Frontier.
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
I came VERY close to buying an '04 or '05 Colorado Crew Cab 5-Speed. Back then they offered that combination, but only with the smaller I-4 engine and the combination wasn't very inspiring. When I learned that Nissan would offer the '05 Frontier 4x2 Crew with a stick, I held off buying the Colorado. A test drive sometime later in the Nissan was extremely impressive and I went forward with Frontier. I love the truck and the 4.0L and 6-Speed combination is so sweet. :)
  • stringbenderstringbender Member Posts: 29
Yeah, I miss the stick shift but then the bad knee and the heel spur reminded me do do with out the clutch. You made the right choice for fun, the 6 spd that I test drove was a blast. Keep us informed on how the clutch holds up after some miles are on it. I loved my Ford ranger stick but while I had it I had to have the clutch worked on a few times and cost me some big bucks. Good Luck and Enjoy. :)

Has anyone else had this problem? I bought a 2006 Frontier in August of last year. A month or two ago, after washing it, I noticed some tiny paint chips missing. They were about the size of the end of a pen and went down far enough that I could see the grey paint (the truck is red). I cleaned it again this past week and noticed more flakes. There are about 10, all over, not in just one spot. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they claim they have never seen anything like it. Anyone else have anything like this? Other than the paint, the truck has been great. I have had older vehicles, 20 years old, that don't have any paint issues at all, though, so I'm really worried here.
  • 2005lekc2005lekc Member Posts: 145
I have an '05 LE KC and the paint has chipped on it from the git-go. The government has taken some of the harmful ingredients out of the paint they use today to become more environmentally friendly.

The end result is that the paint is not as good as it use to be thus the reason you are having the chipping problems you are experiencing.

My wife drives a 2000 Toyota Solara and it too has paint chipping issues. I am sure that it will get worse before it gets better as the government keeps moving us toward a more protective environment atmosphere.

I have a SE Crew with the auto and was driving in traffic about 35 to 45 mph and to avoid all of the slower traffic had to do some weaving in and out of lanes on occasion. When I use to have my manual floor shift, I would just shift down to 3rd and accelerate and back off the gas pedal to control my speed to get in and out traffic. For the heck of it I stuck my auto transmission in 3rd pushed down on the throttle and had a rush feeling the immediate power, and realized that I had the same great speed control as my manual. My question for any transmission experts is, will this hurt or shorten the life of my automatic transmission, if I don't go too crazy with it? Hope not because this would be best of both worlds. :)
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 16,789
Not a chance. That is why there is not just P-R-N-D! I had a '96 Subaru with AT and downshifted all the time. It had just over 220,000 miles on its last night in one piece, and the transmission was still in tip-top shape. Unless you are shifting outside of the gearing range, it will do no harm.
