Sounds like a nicely equipt car and you should have many years of service. Didn't you get the rebate with the car or did you go with the financing deal?
  • gene_fitzgene_fitz Member Posts: 9
Since it was technically "used" they did the sale as a certified pre-owned.
There were no rebates or financing incentives available. (it had 6,000 miles on it)

It was the salesman's bad, when I walked in, I said "What ever i get will be $15,000 out the door (check in hand)"
He first said he could do it, then the manager tried to squeeze another $2,000 for a down payment. I got them with "The salesman said he could do $15,000 out the door. Later!"
6 blocks later, the manager called me and said "We will make it happen"
They still had to do some certified inspections for the classifications, so they gave me a Malibu to drive until the car is ready, telling me to save the gas receipts for re-embursements, and promised the car to have a full tank and be perfect.

We looked at an Aveo 5 door economy version about 2 weeks ago. The dealer called yesterday and said chevy has a new rebate of $1000.

So we get $1000 rebate, plus another $1000 for being a current Ford owner (2000 or newer ford).

I think the sticker price was about 10K
Minus $2000 chevy rebate (apparently just released).
    Add tax, delivery etc.
Minus my GM rebate from our credit card of $1450.
    Michigan tax is 6%

Out the door price is $7650.

So if you didn't have any GM credit card rebates, it would be about $9000 with tax, or about $8600 without tax.

I guess for a car without air, just manual everything, is it a good deal??
  • gene_fitzgene_fitz Member Posts: 9
The SVM is a great car, if you are not needing A/C. And a wonderful value for the money. Moreover, at $7,650 plus the money you save in gas, you definately come out a winner in the end.
  • northerncedarnortherncedar Member Posts: 11
We looked up the blue book retail value for the vehicle, and it was a little bit higher than the bottom line price (not counting my GM card rebates).

A used Aveo with about 6000 miles was being listed for sale on ebay for a higher price. So I think this must be one of the lowest price in the year for this model. I think we could have saved a few more hundreds if I had bartered. But I didn't feel like bartering too much.

I know that most of the time, if you bring the invoice to another dealer, he'll knock a few more hundreds off.

So folks, you can print up my post, and take it to a dealer, and likely will beat me by at least a hundred bucks. The rebate might run out at the end of the month... Or maybe not.

I have a quote from Casey Chevrolet in Newport News, VA for $14,500 "out the door" under the GM family first plan. Does this seem like a reasonable price. I am nervous about this car as I see a lot of people on car-space seem to be having problems and CR ranked it a 36 out of 100. I commute about 240 miles a week and need something reliable. My 99 Ford Escort has about 200,000 miles and has to be repaired about twice a month so I need to replace it  . Thanks in advance for any input.

Impossible to say with the info you provided. How is the car equipped? What options?

    Sorry about that.

It is the LT trim with automatic transmission which includes:
AM/FM stereo with CD MP3 player and aux input jack
    Cruise Control
    Fog Lamps
    folding, power adjustable, heated mirrors
Remote keyless entry, theft deterrent system
    Bucket Seats with adjustable headrest
    15 in aluminum wheels
    Power windows

also: Steering Wheel controls for the audio system

I can only estimate, since I have no idea of your actual location.

    But, according to Edmunds...

MSRP is around 15,580. Invoice is about 14,700.

    That is before any rebates.

Personally, I would suggest you research a few other models, such as Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Hundai and Honda Fit.

The MPG of the Aveo seems to be all over the board by posters on these forums, and for just a little more money, you can have a larger vehicle with the same or better mpg.

But, if you have your mind set on the Aveo, I suggest you send your requirements to 3 or 4 dealers nearby via email, and see what they offer. That will give you the best idea if the price is competitive or not.
  • amethisteamethiste Member Posts: 28
I really liked the Fit however it is significantly more expensive. I have emailed 3 local dealers in the Baltimore, MD. My parents live in Newport News, VA and they took a look at the car for me as my car is dead in the water so I could not do it myself. I'm looking at the Aveo because I have an family member who works for GM and could get me a discount

I just got this quote on a silver Aveo LT Sedan auto transmission with steering wheel controls and spoiler from a dealership in Baltimore

    Vehicle Price:$15,805.00
    Preferred Customer Discount:-$1,216.95
    Customer Rebate:-$500.00
    Selling Price:$14,088.05

    Sales Tax (estimate):+$876.48
    Tag/Registration Fees (estimate):+$143.00
    Tire/Battery/MVWEA:+$4.00
    Title Fee:+$50.00
    Other:+$20.00
    Electronic Filing:+$20.00
    Balance Due (estimate):$15,201.53
The salesman says that the rebate may end tonight. I don't quite believe him.
  • merckxmerckx Member Posts: 565
I'd say that's an ok price, but dealers in Virginia Beach seem to be selling the car for less...

And as far as that "ends tonight" pressure, that'd be enough to make me buy from another dealer.....As we get closer to the 2009 Aveos coming, the 2008s won't be getting m ore expensive..
  • amethisteamethiste Member Posts: 28
I was looking in Newport News at Casey Chevrolet. The downside is that I would have to pay MD taxes and tags when I brought the Aveo back to Baltimore.

Another dealership (Jerry's)here in Baltimore is alleging that this dealership (Fox)that gave me that quote did not mention the freight charge. Jerry's is alleging that Fox is trying to sell me a vehicle that belongs to Jerry's. The Sales Manager at Jerry's wants me to get the vin number so he can see if Fox is trying to sell me "his" vehicle.

Ack - I just want to buy a car. What's with the drama?

That's between the 2 dealers, and not your problem.

I wouldn't give it any more thought...

Simply stated...buy the car from the dealer you feel the best about and also gives you the best price.
  • merckxmerckx Member Posts: 565
All this between dealers I'd say ignore,too.....See what incentives GM is offering on the Aveo...On that, you can expect the dealer to offer a discount,too...that's why I thought $1,400 is good, but not great....

Start with finding out here at Edmunds how much odff GM is offering...

I purchased my 07 LT off the showroom floor April 07. sticker was 15,138 and i drove out at 13,008 all inclusive. (tax, tiltle, all fees, etc,) so was very well pleased. It has given me 50K of miles with no problems. Not even tires. Everything is all original, I just drive the heck out of the little car and I am not easy. Interstate driving is 70-80 mpg with ease.
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
Sounds like a good commuter car. But with 75 mpg highway you are screwing up on your math or need to get that car to lawerence livermore for examination, especially with an auto trans.

    Good luck

I just purchased my second Chevy Aveo 5-door SVM from Mike Anderson Chevrolet in Merrillville, IN. They advertise the car for $9,890 and minus our $3,000 in GM Card savings + TTL, we paid $7,800 in the end. It has the auxilary jack for the iPod and it's sport red (which is our favorite color). The first Aveo we bought, we got incredibly lucky and bought it for $6,000 with only $500 in GM card money. Some crazy Chicago dealer was advertising the basic Aveo for $6,000, of course when we went there they said it was sold and all this other nonsense. Once they heard we were going to sue them, they caved but by this time we found Mike Anderson who agreed to match the Chicago price.

We absolutely love both of our Aveos. The first one has over 82k on it and has never been in the shop for more than a day (only for wear and tear items like brakes). It is such a good car, it averages 35 mpg if we drive it nice and not like a race car driver. We get so many compliments on them especially our new 2009 Sport Red Aveo which is just stunning. Our family has never bought two of the same car so it is such a first to do this. We plan on buying another Aveo next year with $4,000 in GM card money.

Compared to the Yaris, Fit, Scion, and other comparable cars, this is such a better deal. Why pay $15-20k for those cars when the Aveo is so much better. I would not recommend anyone buying the overpriced Aveos that top off at $18k, spend that money elsewhere like on a full size sedan. The basic Aveos are great for city driving and just using them when you need to run errands. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants something that is fun, affordable, and reliable.
  • micwebmicweb Member Posts: 1,617
Magazine and on-line reviewers generally give lower marks to the Aveo than to the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, etc., but I think the same thing is going on here that is going on with quality ratings: the differences are real, but they are such a small order of magnitude compared with 10 or 20 years ago that they are no longer meaningful. I keep looking at the Aveo and keep wondering what's not to like - the quality of materials and construction, to my rather picky eye, matches the imports.

It's good to hear your early Aveo ( I assume earlier since you have 82k in miles on it already) has held up. That's what readers like me want to hear.

So I do have a couple of questions for you. The 2009 Aveo hatchback is greatly revised, with supposedly more or smarter soundproofing, and a new engine. Can you tell any differences compared to your first one?
  • VwEnthusiastVwEnthusiast Member Posts: 2
In response to your message, my family and I definitely noticed the difference between the two Aveos. The 2009 (although it has a "new" engine, it has Dual Continuous Variable Cam Phasing which makes the engine appear faster or more efficient when in reality I believe it has the exact same horsepower as the older one or maybe one more horsepower like 106 hp for the 2004 and 107 hp for the 2009) is really quiet and appears to have a much better fit and finish both inside and out. We like the interior of the new 2009 one so much more because it is more polished, uses chrome pieces as accents, and has a nicer dash display. The soundproofing is definitely there in the 2009 and you can barely hear if the car is on compared with the 2004.

After putting 420 miles on the new 2009 Aveo, I would highly recommend it because it looks a lot sharper than the old one with the new front end and redesigned tail lights, it is way more advanced (ours is a manual transmission and it even tells you when to upshift, which is kind of unneccessary but neat at the same time), and it just feels like a better quality car. We all fight each other to drive the new Aveo and we are even considering buying another 2009 or 2010 one if the price is right!

Don't pay up for these cars... There may be a huge shooting gallery for most cars in the traditional may-july inventory reductions. A 90 day supply is considered bloated for most autos.

    Good luck

    Description Click to Edit
Last summer, when gas cost $4 a gallon, buyers snapped up small cars so fast that dealers couldn't keep them in stock. Now, with gas prices half that level, almost 500,000 fuel-thrifty models are piled up unsold around the country.

The turnabout comes at a bad time for the struggling U.S. car industry, which has revamped factories and shifted product plans to produce more small cars in coming years. The moves are prompted by coming stricter federal fuel-economy standards and the Obama administration's car-bailout plan, which encourages auto makers to boost their vehicles' mileage.

Practically every small car in the market is stacked up at dealerships. At the end of February, Honda Motor Co. had 22,191 Fits on dealer lots -- enough to last 125 days at the current sales rate, according to Autodata Corp. In July, it had a nine-day supply, while the industry generally considers a 55- to 60-day supply healthy.

For other models the supply situation is even worse. Toyota Motor Corp. has enough Yaris subcompacts to last 175 days. Chrysler LLC has a 205-day supply of the Dodge Caliber. And Chevrolet dealers have 427 days' worth of Aveo subcompacts. At the current sales rate, General Motors Corp. could stop making the Aveo and it wouldn't run out until May 24, 2010.

"I don't think Americans really like small cars," said Beau Boeckmann, whose family's Galpin Ford in southern California is the country's largest Ford dealer. "They drive them when they think they have to, when gas prices are high. But we're big people and we like big cars."

The logjam of small cars is caused in part by the recession, which has sapped sales of all types of vehicles. But it also underscores how badly gasoline prices have whipsawed the industry

GM Has 161 Day Supply Plus Massive Cash Burn

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GM struggles to reduce cash burn

    Jesse Snyder

    Automotive News | March 2, 2009 - 12:01 am EST

Here's the scary thing about General Motors' fourth-quarter operating loss of $5.9 billion: There's little reason to expect much improvement in the first three months of 2009.

Despite drastic cuts in production, employment, marketing and capital expenditures, GM still is hemorrhaging cash.

How bad is it? In a conference call last week, CFO Ray Young said GM's cash burn this year would be less than last year, which it put at $19.2 billion — but admitted the cash burn in 2009 would be "front-loaded."

Translation: The short-term bleeding will continue. It will be hard in this quarter for GM to reduce its cash-burn much below the $5.2 billion consumed in the last three months of 2008.

And that won't be popular in Washington, where bureaucrats analyzing GM's bailout request seek assurance that they aren't throwing good money after bad.

One of GM's biggest headaches is a stubbornly high inventory. Despite drastic cuts in production, GM had a 161-day vehicle supply on Feb. 1. A 60-day supply is considered ideal. In unit terms, GM had 792,600 vehicles in stock, down 69,800 from Jan. 1. That's a reasonable figure by historical standards.

But sales have collapsed, so unsold cars and trucks still are piled up on dealership lots. GM's January sales totaled 122,728 units, down 48.9 percent from January 2008.

GM sales analyst Mike DiGiovanni expects GM's February sales to be "about the same" as January, and he sees only modest improvements in the months ahead.

At current selling rates, Chevrolet has more than a year's worth of unsold HHRs and Aveos.

I bought a 2009 Pontiac G3 (same as aveo) 5 door during the cash for clunkers. Price was $15000 sticker, -4500 cash for clunkers -3500 factory rebates, so I paid 7000 plus 450 destination charges. (my clunker was a true junker, worth $200) I like this car. It is a stick shift, air conditioning, but thats all, no cruise, no extras. I drive 17 miles to work and back each day, I drive gently and at 55 mph, and average 34MPG. I believe that the important fact is how much you pay per mile you drive, price and fuel milage, so it may not compare as well as some other compacts in some areas, including mileage, but if it proves reasonably reliable, it will be less pennies per mile than all the others, and is a good car for me. I have 3000 miles on it. It is easy to change your own oil, once you get used to the paper filter and Torx t45 tool to drain the oil. I would recommend this car to drivers who pay a small price like I was able to, and just look for $ per mile.

I just purchased an Aveo 2008 with 15,000 miles for $7799 from Miller Chev in Rogers, MN. Great experience....great car at a solid price. Most Blue Book MSRP's have it for over $8000 on dealers lots. Very happy! :)

At the end of December I purchased a new '09 sedan for $4200 TOTAL with NO trade and the is NOT Cash for Clunkers deal.

I needed a new car and wanted something new and cheap. The LS Aveo fit the bill. I sold my 1993 Honda Civic privately and got a new car with a 3/36K bumber to bumper warranty, 5/100k powertrain, 5/100k roadside assistance, 6/100k rust warranty, OnStar free for a year, built in phone and emergency services notification assistance, etc, It even has it's own phone number. Not necessary - but included free. It has side air bags, too. No curtain bags. But it's still a lot safer than my 16 year old Civic. No rust. No rot. All shiny, new and clean. Nice.

The car drives very well, is very comfortable and is NEW for $4200. I sold my Civic for $1.8k so after netting out my Civic it cost me about $2400 to move up 16 model years.

It turns on a dime and the brakes are awesome. The drivers seat is height adjustable and has adjustable lumbar support and even a little right-side armrest. It even has 2 trip odometers. Great for tracking gas mileage and little trips on the other trip odometer. Very handy. The rear seat folds down 60/40 style. So far I am averaging mid thirties after 7 tanks of fuel.

3,000 miles and climbing. Gas mileage is Mid-thirties MPG in winter in New England. The car is comfortable, great for running around, scout meetings, dance pick-up etc... Works for me.

    Not a bad deal, huh.

    marc :)

I'm a BIG Chev/GM supporter and owned an Aveo. This car, however, is something that GM should get rid of. From day one I had, electrical problems, engine light ghost problems, continual blown head lights, cracked plastic pieces in cooling system causing overheating, leaking master cylinder seal, culminating with a broken timing belt at 120,000 km causing massive engine damage. There was no warning from GM dealership at services that the belt needed changing and nothing from them advising of the propensity of this engine to have timing belts break at low mileage.

If the new Cruze uses the same engine as the Aveo I would avoid it like the plague.

The Aveo was the worst vehicle I ever pruchased. GM should be ashamed.

I bought a 2009 Aveo in 2010. I paid $11,500 for it and now it has a little over 12,000 miles on it. There was a recall on the spark plugs not sure if the wires were included in the recall. Anyway, so far the car is doing great. I love to drive it and it gets great gas mileage. I only drive it four or five days a month. My husband and I drive for a trucking company and we are gone three to four weeks a month. :)

I bought an '05 Aveo with around 50k miles on it for about $8k. I have not enjoyed it. I have had so many problems and in just a year and a half put an additional $1.5k into the car to keep it running. I will not buy another Aveo, and probably not another Chevy. I'll ditch this one off to some place like this once I'm done with it because it belongs in a junk yard!
