    G'day

Dodge Convertible from about 1952. Is that Dean Martin?

Setting looks European, maybe Austria or Italy.

    Cheers

Yup, it's a 1951 Dodge Coronet and the scene is from a German movie.

    G'day

I am a bit late to this exchange but can add a bit of detail. This was the last Aston Martin DB4 chassis which was sent to Bertone, where Giugaro fashioned this one off "Jet" body. Whilst DB4s were aluminium bodied, this one was in steel.

I rather like the contrast of the swoopy Aston flanks with an Italian glasshouse above.

There is a lengthy article on Bertone in the latest Car (probably a couple of months delayed here).

A few days late. Is it an Allard?

Better late than never. You're still the only to get it-it's a mid-50's Allard Palm Beach. IIRC most featured Cadillac or Chrysler Hemi V8s.

    G'day

Allard are one of those wrong turns in car design. There was a microcar, the unlovely beast above and a very sweet looking J2.

    Sank in the mid 1960s

Oh, I wouldn't characterize Allard as a "wrong turn". It's true they faded out in the 1960s but Allards served as training wheels to a generation of drivers, one of whom was Carroll Shelby who won several important races driving J2s then went on replicate the formula of big American V8 + lightweight Brit Chassis that gave us the Cobra.

BTW nor would I characterize the Palm Beach as "unlovely", IMO the Palm Beach was pretty attractive.

Not that Allard didn't make some fairly unlovely cars>

It may lack the aggressive minimalism of the J2 but it's certainly prettier.

I dunno----It has a kit car look to it--taken full view, it's rather clumsy-looking but not too bad compared to what else was out there at the time.

Probably the least expensive Allard you can buy, in the $40,000 range for a nice one?? Parts would be virtually impossible to find.

A nice J2 would cost you a cool 1/4 mil.

If you say so, but to my eyes it's the J2 that looks like a kit-car.

BTW didn't I read that somebody is making J2 replicas (also for six figures).

Looking at the color chart at TCP Global (http://www.tcpglobal.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1956-chevrolet-pg01.jpg) I guess that's the "Laurel Green"? Personally, I think "Bile" or "Puss" is a bit more appropriate. :P

Actually, it doesn't look bad on the paint chart, but in that photo it looks pretty unappetizing.
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
You are correct, imidazol97. The crease in the bumper is the clincher. It's a Buick.

Hmmm. That front end seems to indicate a Chrysler 300B. May I hazard a guess that it is the only 300B convertible?

Yup that is the one and only '56 Chrysler 300B convertible but it wasn't born that way. It came off the MoPar assembly line as a '56 Windsor and much later was painstakingly converted to 300B spec. They're asking $49,500 for it.

Shifty I'd be interested in you opinion of this as I'm sure there are those who'd consider this an overpriced desecration of the glorious Letter Cars but I'm not so sure. The '56s are my favorite 300s (I love the styling) and a fair amount of money must've gone into the conversion (check out the top!) and it's the only one. If I had the dough I'd be on the plane to Oakland.

How bizarre. They should have restored the Windsor convertible itself--it would have been worth more!

It's tough pricing these...ahem...we call them "tribute" cars now, not clones, copies, fakes or desecrations. :P

So I'd peg a show quality '56 Windsor convertible at about $60,000, and naturally this fa....er.....TRIBUTE car would be worth less.

Problem with buying a car like this is, you can only do one thing with it--drive it and enjoy it. You'll be anathema at any Mopar meet, but most likely folks at the local show and shine won't know.

Certainly a bad investment at any rate.

if I were appraising it for insurance/loss, I'd peg it against something like a '56 Windsor hardtop, and treat it as a "chop" even though it isn't---the point being it is a stigmatized car. Or price it has a "resto-mod", meaning add up the receipts and divide by 2.

So maybe $35,000 is about right for a reasonable replica of a 50s convertible. Let's face it, you can't buy a mid 50s open car for much less than that.

but I can't positively identify since my knowledge of this time period is limited to Plymouth and Cadillac. In this picture it's implied that it is a 1967 Impala which it clearly is not. (Ignore the decoration on the hood...please  )

The thing that is NOT a 67 Impala

I believe you are right. Looking in the...ahem...crotch area of the hood decoration there is that cute little cutlass emblem. I had concentrated so much on the name on the grille that I totally missed that. Thanks!

There was a Lamborghini show car like this shown at Paris some years ago. Cannot recall details but I think the holes in rear are air vents over engine bay.

It wasn't clear to me whether the weirdo mystery car was a production unit or not; Wikipedia says 20 of these have been made. Graham is right about the extensive use of carbon fiber; the car weighs only 2200 lbs despite the (Gallardo)V10 engine and an AWD system.

It is a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, the name derives from the fact that carbon is #6 on the periodic table of elements.

    Wikipedia Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Personally I think it looks cool in a Stealth Fighter kind of way.
