EPA window sticker in 2001 was 42/49. I have every tank full documented, lowest 44 (75% traffic light inner-city travel), 50 highway average. Daily commute (35% city, 65% highway, average is 47.5 mpg). 2001 TDI Golf, 5-spd

You got very good mileage on your TDI, what is your highway average speed which you get 50mpg? My average highway speed is 80mph for 21mpg.

    1998 Passat V6 gas. 27 City - 30 Highway. 5 gear manual.

    2002 New Beetle Turbo S, gas. 29 City - 34 Highway. 6 gear manual.

    Both use 93 octane gas.

    13.9 or 14 mpg - city driving
    20 Hwy.

    Very disgusted.

Had the computer checked twice. I do not drive like a maniac. My commute to work is 3 miles each way. Very unhappy. VW says nothing they can do. I am ready to sell it.

Convertible and 6 speed Tiptronic is very heavy, no wonder you only got 14mpg in city, my 2004 VR6 only get 22.5 mpg in 75% highway driving. (75mph)

EPA window sticker in 2003 was 42/49.

I have every tank full documented, lowest 44 mpg (75% freeway traffic, light to bumper to bumper), 48 highway average. Daily commute (20% city, 80% highway, range is 48-51 mpg, 50 mile R/T ) highest 62 mpg. 2003 TDI Jetta, 5-spd, app 68,000 miles

I lifted your format, just substituted my data.

I average approx 28-29 mpg as I drive 60 miles RT to/from my office. Almost all hwy miles at 65 mph.
I do use 93 octane. The past holiday weekend i average 32mpg. on a 1100 mile jaunt to West Texas! :surprise:

I'm looking at diesel Golfs. My priority with that car is fuel efficiency. I found a decent price on a used 2002 that's loaded with heated seats, 8 air bags, etc. Anyone know how much weight loaded features add and if you lose much in terms of MPG?
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
A good rule of thumb is 1 mpg per 100#'s. So with the options you mentioned, almost negligible.

Some folks really do this kind of stuff as a hobby. I have heard of running the car with 1/2 tank of fuel, removal of rear seats, no spare tire or tools, etc, etc,.

2002 Golf,4dr, GLS, 2.0L, 5 Speed, stock tire size, 99% highway using the lowest octane, no tune up, no add-on/mods, not using cruise control, some bumper to bumper work commuter traffic - 30-31MPG
The engine is at a high RPM at highway speeds of 65MPH.

Interstate, cruise control on 75, A/C off: 25 MPG
Daily Commute, 60/40 to 70/30 mix of highway and bumper-to-bumper, 19-21 MPG

I think the automatic really kills the mileage in this car, winds up being the same or a little worse than my 2001 Buick Regal GS with it's 3.8L supercharged V6.

2005 Golf GLS TDI 5-speed Tiptronic. 41 mpg (hwy, city mixture)
  • The heated seats and airbags make no difference as all TDIs have the airbags. My 03 TDI has all options (except for the automatic, which is not a good choice with the TDI). I regularly best the EPA numbers. Lately, with higher fuel costs, I have lowered my highway speed to 67 mph. With the general slowdown I have noticed out there, it is not too slow for most traffic conditions. And my highway mpg has gone from just over 50 to between 55 and 60 mpg.

I have had my 2003 Golf TDI for almost 6 years. I have noted every filling. During the first 5 years my yearly average has been 49.5 MPG. Last year I began hypermling. I do not like the term and the phrase ecodriving For economy and ecology). Last year I averaged 58.5 MPG and over 700 miles per tank. I hope to improve upon this this year.
