Infiniti EX35 small SUV

navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
Infinti is planning an entry level sportwagon to fit in under the FX35/FX45. It will be aimed at the small luxury SUV market which includes the BMW X3, 2007 Acura RDX, as well as the upcoming Land Rover Freelander. The story also says Cadillac may introduce something in this field below the SRX in 2008 as a 2009 model, called the BRX.

The CX25/CX35 will arrive in 2007 as a 2008 model.

It will have a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine and a 3.5 liter V6.

Here's the story from Autoweek.

This new vehicle looks really interesting but I'm not sure whether Infiniti will offer the CX25 in North America, since it "only" offers 175hp. It would be considered as a very cheap model by buyers because it's an inline 4 instead of a small 6 like what BMW offers with its X3. Also, I don't think Infiniti wants to lower its prices to compete too much with its own creator, Nissan, and their X-Trail (only available in Canada) or X-Terra.

Mazda announced in May that it will name its upcoming 2007 crossover vehicle CX-7, Nissan stated a few weeks later that its 2008 Infiniti entry level crossover vehicles will be called CX25 and CX35. I think this will cause some confusion in the general public. :confuse:

LOS ANGELES -- Infiniti dealers will get a new entry-level sport wagon.

Sources inside and outside the company say the vehicle will arrive in 2007 as a 2008 model. It will come in two versions, the CX25 and CX35.

The 2.5 is a V6, the VQ25, produced in three versions, the VQ25DE producing 186 PS (DIN) in the Elgrand luxury van, the VQ25DD (direct injection) producing 215 PS in the Skyline/Stagea and the turbo VQ25DET producing more than Nissan likes to advertise in Japan (over 280 PS), probably around 300 hp.

Unfortunately, the most likely scenario will be that the marketing & accounting gurus at Infiniti will utilize the 2.5 QR25DE engine here in the US since it's already in 3-4 Nissan Vehicles, but if it they do put a 2.5 V6 in it, that would be so sweet.... :shades:

Infiniti Will Add Small SUV to Compete with BMW X3

A report in Automotive News confirms the long rumored addition of a small SUV to the Infiniti lineup. The upscale arm of Nissan Motor Co. will add a compact sport-ute to its offerings in the near future, the report says, with the X3 cited as the chief competitor for the new vehicle. The new sport-ute would be positioned below Infiniti's popular FX35/FX45 SUVs. Infiniti may also get a version of the Nissan GT-R concept shown last week at the Tokyo Motor Show.

I already created a thread about this issue back in July I think - it will be called the Infiniti CX25/CX35.

Why don't you merge these discussions?

Since I first saw the teaser info on this vehicle, I thought it just might become my next car. I currently own a 2001 2wd QX4 that I purchased a couple of years ago. I am interested in any info that people may come across regarding this future vehicle. I'm thinking it might be the perfect blend of infinit quality with subaru-like functionality.

Also, anyone know the lowdown on which year it's coming out? Most info indicated that it will be available in late 2007 as a 2008 vehicle. However, the edmunds future vehicle section has it available in late 2006 as a 2007 model year vehicle.

I may be interested, but I need 3 rows of seats.

Otherwise, it'd compliment my I35 perfectly.

I don't see the point of building an SUV that can be smaller than the FX35/45? It doesn't make much sense to me. How much smaller can it be?
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
Lol, you're kinda right about that. The Fx35/45 only seat 5, and have little cargo room.

The new CX will probably be a couple of inches smaller in size, and price, and the engine will be smaller. The thrills of an FX in a smaller and cheaper package.

The June 07 Motor Trend on page 25 has a good photo of the upcoming Infinity EX 25 / EX 35.
Engines available are a 3.5 V6 and a 2.5 liter four cylinder. The June Car and Driver carries the same photo. Estimated arrival should be the end of 2007. Looks like the Acura RDX will get a better-looking brother.

Nissan Rogue may share the platform, but it would be a mistake to offer a 4 cylinder.

Beautiful ride, doh! ;) Should be quite the sensation, especially back in NYC.

I agree. To justify the premium price for the Infiniti, it should be V6 only. And the Rogue should be 4cyl only.

I'd like the Infiniti :) but the Rogue fits my "less is more" philosophy better and my pocketbook.

Nissan probably should have kept the Altima a 4cyl and left the V6 to the Maxima. IMO, who needs a Maxima when there's an Altima V6?

Anybody seen a spyshot yet? This thing should be somewhere out there for testing...Also any idea about the price range?
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
I disagree on the four-cylinder part; the 4-cylinder model brings down the price of entry and offers people who want luxury but don't want to shell out big bucks for gasoline an option.

Then again, I've always thought a G25 wouldn't be a bad idea either, so I guess I am partial to the 4 cylinder models

I'd love to know the approximate size of this thing and what engine options it will have. Will it just be an EX35? How about an EX37? Or even a *gasp* EX45! woohoo! :)

I'd like to see a 3500-lb 300-hp AWD miniature version of the FX35, personally. It would be a top contender for my money, personally. Maybe 3500 lbs is asking too much, but DEFINITELY less than 4k. I'd want it to run to 60 in 6.5 secs or less, so whatever they need to do to make that happen, do it! :)

I feel you on the gas, but a $30k 4-cylinder SUV is a tough sell, no? Not many cleaning up in the market at this time.

The EX should look almost EXACTLY like the concept, even offer the giant chrome wheels!

Infiniti has shown that they can bring the thunder from Auto Show to Showroom. I am confident they can get it done.

Without a flagship, a solid mid-size SUV hit is very important.

well, technically, I don't believe this will be mid-sized. That's what the FX is for. This would be a compact ... I would think.

I believe it has the same 112" wheelbase as the FX. I saw some dimensions on the outside but I can't find them now. I was curious as well. It came out to be just about the same size as an X3, RDX, etc. The FX is also about that size. In my mind, there is no doubt that the FX is moving up in size. The QX4 is gone and the EX will be the same size for less money. That's not going to work with the FX staying as is. I'm in the market for this type of vehicle. I'm trying to be patient.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,936
Well, if its the size of the FX, I don't see the point. And I definitely don't see how the 2.5 could possibly be sufficient in an FX-sized vehicle. So it just doesn't add up, IMHO.

And, really, wheelbase doesn't say much. As long as it gets shorter overhangs, has a lower center of gravity (ie, is not as tall as the FX), and loses some weight.

  • jblaze13jblaze13 Member Posts: 152
The FX is slightly larger in all proportions. I was generalizing. The EX is longer but shorter in height than its competitors. There's much more to weight than size. Infiniti has only shown the concept with a V6 at this point. The 2.5 is consumer speculation.

IMHO, the two will be too close in size and too far apart in price to make the FX viable in its current state. The FX's competitor's are bigger and more spacious. They have 3 row seating too.

    EX
    112" wheelbase
    185.2" long
    72" wide
    63.2" tall

    FX
    112" wheel base
    189" long
    76" wide
    66" tall

    X3
    110" wheelbase
    180" long
    73" wide
    66" tall

    RDX
    104" wheelbase
    181" long
    74"wide
    65" tall
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,936
I didn't realize we had all these measurements. I thought it was still just a sketch at this point.(??)

IMHO, the FX doesn't have direct competitors that I can think of. In other words, if I'm in need of 3 rows and more space, I'm not shopping the FX, hence it doesn't compete with those with 3 rows. The ones that do seem to fit in terms of similar goals are either upmarket (Cayenne) or downmarket (CX7).

I kinda thought Infiniti was retiring the 3.5 VQ to go to 3.7. I guess that's just for the Coupe, initially. :confuse:

I'd expect the 3.7 to reach the G sedan and EX in about 3 years.

This is strictly a mailer, a promo piece that caused lust. It is similar to the information on the Infiniti website.

I will be glad when I can know the specs on this baby. We have a 2003 QX4, and we are ready for a crossover as long as it is lighter and no larger. The EX may be the answer.
  • archimedesarchimedes Member Posts: 16
Maybe I'm just not up with the times, but I was really hoping that this new vehicle would come with the smaller engine possible and with a manual transmission. At this point, neither seems likely. So, although it seems like an intriguing vehicle, I'll probably stick with my 2001 QX4. However, I will stay tuned to see what develops.

There is a spy photo of the EX floating around the net. Looks just like the concept. The wheels seem smaller and the ground clearance lower. Its sitting so low it looks like a G35 wagon.

yer right. Looks like a G35 hatch. But that's cool with me. Just about what I was hoping for.

I saw something in a recent magazine, too. Not that it was uncommon knowledge, but it made me think. The writeup says its based on the G35X. Since they chose that specific model, I have to presume AWD and an automatic tranny will be standard. I realize this is most likely the case, but how cool would this vehicle be with a stick and RWD?? I would LOVE to see that offered! As it is, with the extra weight and being hampered by an auto and AWD, what are we looking at? Maybe 6.8 secs to 60 mph? So drivers of this car can look forward to being outaccelerated by a RAV4? Ugh.

The EX will have the G35's 112 inch wheelbase, but will the dimensions match the Bimmer X3 or be smaller than the FX or Murano or Lincoln MKX? I can't get a feel for the exterior dimensions.

The 2009 FX will have the same dimensions as the current FX. Infiniti will use materials that will reduce weight, this is why the up-coming FX will be faster compared to the current model.

Excellent news! Doesn't get any bigger but gets lighter AND more power. Sweet!

If the EX is going to be smaller than the FX then the dimensions of the EX may prove to be just right for me. I am looking for an "empty nester" vehicle that my wonderful spouse and I can both enjoy.

She wants to sit up higher than a car, and I want handling and performance.

As an Infiniti veteran (2yr w/ G35 & 3yr w/ FX35) I can't wait for the EX. My only complaint of my present FX35 is that after driving the lighter G35, my FX is badly underpowered (280HP) for it's weight. Topspeed.com is showing the 2009 FX37 w/ 300HP which is good. I too am an empty-nester so the 2008 EX35 (G35 Hatchback?) looks like the perfect car for me. I just wish I could be in Pebble Beach this weekend instead of Atlanta!

If I am successful in any way, I'll be back here with the information.

    PRESS RELEASE:
All new 2008 Infiniti EX coming to Europe

    * EX revealed 16 August at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
    * Innovative Coupe Crossover concept
    * Standard 'ATTESA E-TS' all-wheel drive
    * Powered by a 3.5-litre 290hp V6 (US specification)
    * First introduction of the advanced Around View Monitor system
    * To be launched progressively across Europe starting from Autumn 2008 together with the G Saloon, G Coupe and a successor to the iconic FX

ROLLE, SWITZERLAND (16.08.07): The all-new 2008 Infiniti EX coupe crossover, revealed this week at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, will form part of a four model premium range that will be launched across Europe starting from Autumn 2008.

The EX is a new addition to the global Infiniti range. To be badged EX35 when it goes on sale in the US at the end of this year, this all-wheel drive crossover slots in below the iconic FX and offers an exceptional combination of seductive design, elegant interior and advanced technology systems. These include the world production car debut of the advanced Around View Monitor (AVM) system, which utilizes four small cameras to give the driver a "top-down view" of the outside of the vehicle while parking. The new EX35 also becomes the second Infiniti production vehicle, following the Autumn introduction in the US of the 2008 Infiniti M-series, to offer the new Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system, and the first to feature "Scratch Shield," a special "self-healing" clearcoat paint. Launch timing of these technologies in Europe is to be confirmed.
    Coupe-Inspired Exterior

Designed by the Infiniti design centre in Japan, the EX35's sculpted elegance should have a timeless appeal. Sleek lines portray speed, grace and finesse combining the look and feel of a luxury coupe with the elevated cabin of a 4x4.

The sporty proportions include a long hood, short front and rear overhangs, rearward cabin and smooth coupe-like roofline arching over the windows to the C-pillars.
"The EX35 is the perfect fusion of a luxury coupe and a sporty 4x4," said Jim Wright, Vice President Infiniti Europe.

The EX35 has a length of 4631mm and a width of 1803mm making it maneuverable in town. While a height of 1589mm gives it a more dynamic stance and a lower centre of gravity than most other 4x4s.

EX35's exterior includes many signature Infiniti touches, including a double-arch grille, large L-shaped headlights with available Bi-Xenon Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), integrated fog lights, distinctive LED taillights and "dynamic arch" profile. Other exterior features include a high-mounted rear hatchback spoiler, chrome-finished dual exhaust pipes, an available power tilt/sliding sunroof with one-touch activation and optional roof rails and crossbars. The EX35 also features a standard puddle lamp integrated in the driver's side door mirror as part of the Hospitality Lighting Concept.
Eight exterior colors will be offered including two shades new to the model.

One of the unique features of the new EX35 is the special "Scratch Shield," a special "self-healing" clearcoat paint, which is designed to maintain its gloss-level over time. The paint repairs fine scratches, such as fingernail scratches under door handles, restoring the EX35's surface close to the original state. The process, which takes anywhere from one day to one week (depending on the surrounding temperature and the depth of the scratch), is accomplished through the use of a special highly elastic resin. This resin is combined with a conventional clearcoat to increase the paint's flexibility and strength by raising the resin density.
    Elegant Interior Design

Like all Infiniti vehicles, the EX35 is conceived to offer an invigorating and engaging interior environment. And one that is both indulgent and inspiring.

The driver-focused "wave-inspired" cabin layout features an Infiniti signature "double-wave" instrument panel, easy-to-read high-contrast gauges with white-and-violet illumination and hospitality lighting with a pin LED light mounted over the center console and Infiniti-signature analog clock.

The instrument panel also features a 7-inch color display with Infiniti controller for the trip computer and additional vehicle information, including the available Infiniti Hard Disk based Navigation System with 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for music storage and playback.

Other technology systems include available Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition. Available technology features include RearView Camera (available separately, or as part of the Around View Monitor system), front and rear parking sensors, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Bose® Premium Audio System with 11 speakers including 2 subwoofers, 6CD in-dash changer and iPod® connectivity.

The interior is offered with cloth or leather-upholstered seating surfaces, available in four different colour concepts, reflecting Infiniti's desire to offer the customer a high level of personalisation. A special Black Lacquer trim comes standard on the center console, with optional genuine Maple wood trim for the centre

An 8-way power driver's seat with 2-way manual lumbar support is standard, along with a 4-way power passenger's seat. A driver's seat memory system is also offered, along with available heated front seats and 8-way power front passenger's seat. Also available is an unusual 60/40 split power-folding 2nd row seat (operated from the front or hatch area) making it easier to get the best out of the interior space.
"The EX35's interior is all about driving pleasure and passenger comfort," said Wright. "Like the exterior, it offers a coupe-like feel but surprising versatility – ideal for today's active lifestyles. Its design is elegant and made using beautiful materials that indulge as well as calm. "
    Advanced Platform and Powertrain

Under the EX35's dramatic body is an equally advanced platform and powertrain based on the latest Infiniti performance technology. Its advanced FR-L platform provides the same high levels of handling precision and balance as it does for the Infiniti M, FX and G Coupe and Saloon.

Every 2008 US-specification Infiniti EX35 comes as standard with the fourth-generation VQ35HR 3.5-liter V6 engine (shared with the new G35 Saloon), rated at 290-plus horsepower (estimated) and 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, DS sport mode with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), and Adaptive Shift Control.

The engine block features ladder frame construction, variable exhaust cam timing (eCVTCS), asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors and Iridium spark plugs. Its symmetric twin ram air intake system helps reduce airflow resistance, while the dual exhaust system has been designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and reduced muffler exhaust pressure help improve engine breathing.
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
Both are tuned to create authoritative harmonies, helping enhance driving pleasure, an exciting engine sound and expected improvements in emissions and fuel economy (versus the previous generation VQ engine).

The fourth-generation VQ engine design also includes a long list of advanced systems found on the previous design – including a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a "noiseless" timing chain for quiet operation, an electronically controlled "drive-by-wire" throttle system, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, and molybdenum coated lightweight pistons.

Every EX35 utilizes a subframe-mounted independent front double-wishbone suspension with aluminum-alloy upper and lower links, high-performance dual-flow pass shock absorbers and anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with aluminum-alloy upper and lower links and axle housing, high-performance dual-flow pass shock absorbers and anti-roll bar.

Steering is provided by a speed-sensitive power-assisted steering system with power-assisted front and rear discs (vented front) and standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Also standard is Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS), while an advanced Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) with Preview Braking is optionally available.

Available wheel and tire combinations include an 18-inch 8-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with 225/55R18 tires.

EX35 features Infiniti's ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system, which is also utilized on the 2008 M, FX and G Saloon.
The system utilizes an active torque distribution management system with an active centre clutch designed for smooth starts and better traction and maneuverability on snowy and wet roads than conventional all-wheel drive systems, plus minimal compromise of rear-wheel drive performance characteristics on dry roads.
    Advanced New Technology

The EX35's advanced technology design is highlighted by one system that is the first production version available in the US and Europe: the Infiniti Around View Monitor.

It utilizes small front, side and rear-mounted cameras to project an all-around view of potential objects on every side of the vehicle – helping reduce blind spots when parking.

"Conventional mirrors, no matter how carefully you use them, just can't provide a view around the car that the Around View Monitor's four-camera system does," said Wright. "Rear bumper parking sensors help detect objects behind a car, but again they can't give the view of the space around the vehicle that the AVM does."
    EX35 European specification

The information given above relates to the US market EX35. Specifications of the European version will be confirmed closer to the on sale date.

In terms of positioning, it is difficult to find any direct rivals for the EX being arguably the first of a new wave of coupe crossovers. But looking at other cars available currently, the EX might be lined up against rivals as diverse as the BMW X3 3.0si and Audi A4 3.2FSI quattro avant.

The EX will get its first European showing at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The brand will be launched across Europe, city by city, starting in the autumn of 2008 – a process that will take two years. Infiniti Europe will reveal more details of its launch schedule towards the end of 2007.

Four models will be available in Europe from launch. These will include the G saloon, the G coupe, the EX as detailed above, and a successor to the iconic FX to be unveiled next year. A replacement for the M-series will join the European range early in the next decade along with the option, on the M-, EX- and FX-series, of a high performance V6 diesel.

Superior customer service will be as important to Infiniti as the product. This starts with the retail network, all of which will employ the new Infiniti Retail Design Environment Initiative (IREDI) that has a look and feel more akin to a luxury designer hotel than a car showroom, and continues with Infiniti's Total Ownership Experience (TOE) philosophy that covers all contacts the customer will have with the brand.

Said Wright: "The launch of a premium car brand in Europe is a rare and special event. Infiniti will have the simple philosophy of offering the independently minded customer a new alternative of vibrant product teamed with excellent service. The cars are all elegantly designed, comprehensively equipped and aimed at the enthusiast. But they are only half the story. Effortless ownership will be equally important as you will discover closer to the launch."

It looks better than the RDX and X3, plus has a more powerful engine and will probably cheaper than the X3.
