Nissan Xterra Prices Paid & Buying Experiences



  • I thought I would chime in with what i just paid for a brand new 2010 Nissan Xterra OR 4x4. My out the door cost was $28,000 (including TTL). Based on my numbers, I estimate that I paid $27,000.00 for the truck. Sticker was $31,775.00.

    How did I do?

    Hard to be exact without knowing what your options were, but here is the base msrp and invoice prices: $31,200 - $29,304, which would be a difference of 94%. $31,775 x .94 = $29,844. $29,844 - ($1,500rebate) = $28,344. If your out the door was $28,000 then you scored a major coup on your vehicle, almost $3k under invoice. Can't beat that!
  • Just to help, here are my options on the 2010 OR 4x4:

    Rack Lights
    Rockford Fosgate w/ Sub & XM, Bluetooth
    Nevada Tow Package
    Floor Mats

    Just about all of this is standard on the new OR but I think the tow package might have been an add-on.

    The $28,000.00 was the exact amount financed.

    Hello everyone and I am considering purchasing a 2009 X which has an MSRP of $26,200.00.

    The dealer is willing to sell the X to me for $21,995.00.

    Is it possible to do better?

  • I think I scored a very good deal last weekend, October 25, 2009, in the Portland, Oregon Metro area.

    Tonkin Nissan of Wilsonville, Oregon runs a weekend ad in the Oregonian newspaper (with prices that are good for ONLY Friday to the close of business Sunday), They are straightforward Ads, stating an amount off MSRP. The discount applies to any unit on their lot without ANY added accessories.

    They had 5 new 2010 Xterras in stock. I picked out a Blue 2010 Xterra X, 4WD, Automatic. Mudflaps@ $125 was the only factory option. MSRP $26,235. Brand new unit, 9 miles.

    I paid $20,247 plus $272 for DMV (includes a FOUR YEAR license plate ! ) plus a $50 Doc fee. NO Sales Tax. I wrote them a check for $20,569. Paid in full. NO TRADE IN.

    My friendly, professional and mature salesman explained that the dealership was going for some kind of Volume Sales Award from Nissan. According to him the dealership gets back triple the holdback monies if thet sell a certain number of units. BS or not ?? Who cares ?

    This dealership is about 35 miles from Portland International Airport. An Oregon trip permit is about $20, which will get you back home. You must be an Oregon resident to registir your vehicle in Oregon with our cheap licensing costs. The State nails us with hefty income and property taxes so it all evens out somewhere down the line.
  • Well, my situation is a bit different than some as I am out of the country right now. I have a 2005 S that a friend of mine just bought from me so I needed a new vehicle for my fiance to drive until I get home. I started by soliciting quotes from all Colorado Nissan dealers informing them that I was a motivated buyer looking to purchase a 2010 SE in Super Black with the Nevada Tow Package as the only added option. I also stated that I was looking for their "best offer" right off the bat and that I would not be contacting any of them via telephone until I had received the lowest offer.

    Obviously I started to get replies almost instantly. Of the 10 dealers that I contacted I received replies from seven with prices ranging from $27,998 to $29,500. Some of them claimed to have the tow package installed, some said they would install it, others tried to sell me other models of the vehicle. I even had one very amateur dealer at Larry Miller Nissan - Denver that refused to give me a price stating that "I had to tell him my price".

    I developed a spread sheet and started to compile the data that I was receiving that listed the dealership, salesman, date contacted, quoted price, counter offer, notes, etc.

    I went back and fourth with about five of the dealers for a few days while some budged their price a few hundred dollars but added on the "dealer fees, pinstriping, paint protection, blah blah blah" I had it narrowed down to two dealers within a few days: Boulder Nissan and Empire Nissan - Denver.

    Boulder Nissan had originally quoted me $27,818 with no tow package but including the iPod cable. I came back stating that I wasn't interested in the iPod connector but would like the tow package. He countered with $27,998 with tow package installed and no additional fees apart from taxes. I attempted to play this number off of some of the remaining dealers to no avail. None of them would budge or even meet that price.

    I eventually entered into formal negotiations with Boulder Nissan stating that I would buy for that price if he would be willing to send somebody to Colorado Springs - (90 miles each way) to pick up my fiance and drive her to pick up the vehicle and do the paperwork. He was willing to do this and the deal was set.

    So yeah, I ended up purchasing for $27,998 for the 2010 SE (4X4) in Super Black with gray leather with the iPod connector (H94), tow package (T92) and the included Technology Package and Garmin Nuvi. The only add on was the AZ state taxes of 5.6%. I felt comfortable dealing with them because of all the dealers that I contacted, it seemed like they were being honest from the beginning and that was what I wanted.

    To further break down the pricing:

    According to new car pricing the 2010 SE 4X4 as equipped above has an MSRP of $32,045 and an invoice price of $29,981 so that means that less the $1500 rebate, he most likely gave up a portion of the holdback selling the vehicle at $1,983 less than invoice. Granted, true invoice pricing is hard to gauge without the actual invoice but that seemed to be a pretty consistent number between KBB, edmunds, etc.

  • Bought an Xterra S yesterday for invoice less $2,000 ($1,500 plus $500 customer cash coupon mailed from Nissan). One dealer in Rivergate area is offering $500 over Kelly Blue Book trade-in allowances -- which made a huge difference on my deal. I emailed three dealers asking for the deal (including no doc fees) and had one dealer reply within minutes. You have to ask for the "internet sales specialists" to get the best deals. Also -- guess all the latest incentives with Nissan end 1/31.

    I live in Alaska and am looking at a 2005 S model Xterra.
    Excellent condition; 50,000 miles; like new tires; extended warranty; power windows/locks; 6 speed manual.
    I love the rig, but they are asking $15,500, $2000 over Kelly Blue Book value, although KBB doesn't figure in extended warranty.
    What is an extended warranty worth and how do I get the party to reduce the price?

    I don't know anything about the used car market in Alaska. Even so that price seems WAY too high! Print off the used car retail value from edmunds and/or KBB and walk in there and other them your best price, which should be no more than retail edmunds or kbb, and tell them that's your offer. They will either take it or not and if not you walk away. There are plenty of used cars out there, I assume even in Alaska. So don't let yourself get screwed over, because that's about 3 grand overpriced! Good luck! You could probably buy a new one for under 20 grand!

    For anyone in Denver Metro or Colorado wanting to purchase a Nissan, Sean's testimony for getting an honest price is same as my experiences with purchasing two Pathfinders and an Xterra over the last Six years, my currant Nissan is an Xterra O/R purchased a couple years ago from Empire Nissan.

    Boulder Nissan & Empire Lakewood Nissan were the only two I ever received upfront, decent pricing from, and definitely would recommend, all the other Metro area and Colo Spgs dealers were a joke on getting an internet deal from. Great experience from both Boulder & Empire dealerships (had exp. from both purchasing from and service work)

    Recently thought I wanted a Wrangler limited 4dr Rubicon, love the looks and 4WD capablity, but after test driving a couple times and getting back in my Xterra, no way!, the Jeep feels like it has a bad case of ashma, I like my paid off Xterra better! :)
    My Xterra has 30K miles, never even a warranty issue, cannot give this vehicle up, so will keep for a long time, even though I am in the market for a car now as well.

    The salespeople were very professional and it was for the most part a great experience.

    My guess is there will be a completely new Xterra for 2011 given that we are in the sixth model year. Later in the 2010 model year I would expect $2000.00 additional in discount to clear them out. Maybe more given higher gas prices to come.

    Love it so far with only 50 miles.

    Anybody have some advice on which options to add such as all weather floor mats?

    Thank you for the positive feedback kyfdx and I love the Xterra.

    The dealer started at $8025.00 for the CRV and I negotiated the price up. I also had to decline the plethora of dealer installed options.

    Please let me know any fun accessories to add to the truck if you can think of any. I already ordered all weather mats and touch up paint.

    How about having the body side molding installed?

  • My experience is similar to the Colorado poster above. Don't have time to visit a bunch of dealers, and relying heavily on internet/email quotes. Nissan had the $2000 rebate, and no factory-to-dealer incentives I was aware of.

    I used to send quote requests to every dealer in the area (large city in CA), about 30 total. Mentioned my trim and color interests, and "send me your best quote."

    Started getting emails within a half hour, nearly every dealer had responded within 6 hours. Set up an Excel spreadsheet with offers, colors, trims, contact info, MSRP's, invoice, etc. For invoice information they often provided this straight off the bat and it matched what's on Edmunds TMV.

    There weren't really that many to choose from out there, maybe 4-5 dealers or "families of dealers" could get me the car I wanted. MSRP on the rig I was looking at was $28400 (all prices incl destination), and almost right away by email I was being offered low $25K and high $24K including the rebate, i.e. right around invoice.

    I test drove one and really liked it. Dealer A was a typical high-pressure place, telling me my trade-in was worthless and could only be sold for scrap (1998 sedan KBB trade-in $2400). I was offered $24600. I told them I'd gotten better offers already from Dealer B, which was true, and countered with $24100. They kind of balked, and I walked away.

    I then emailed Dealer B and told them Dealer A was matching their price. Dealer B then dropped their price $500 ... i.e they were now offering $1000 below invoice by email.

    So I went to Dealer B. They only had a 4x2 in stock and I wanted a 4x4, and we negotiated on the 4x4 which was from their sister dealer 1 hr away. They said they could have it the next day. I was paying cash, and they insisted on a credit check, which I balked at and ultimately refused. We settle on the price $1000 below invoice. Then came the fees, which were VASTLY inflated to the tune of $600-700 including overcalculated taxes and DMV registration fees. I insisted on the EXACT amount of tax and fees as determined by the DMV website. After 2-3 hours of back and forth, contract was signed, no hassle with additional warranty/prep etc etc.

    Ultimately I got a 2010 Xterra, Auto S, $28400 MSRP, for $24100 + tax + fees which in CA comes out to around $2500.

    All in all I found the info on Edmunds, KBB, NADA, and very helpful ESPECIALLY with the explanations of all the scams, fake fees, salesman/sales manager "routines," and advice on how to act (firm, professional, unimpressed, and skeptical).

    Huh I didn't know they could scam you into paying higher taxes than necessary. Do they only pay what's required but screw you into paying more? I'll have to check the paperwork on the last couple cars I bought and see what they charged me. Do you pay sales tax on the negotiated price including rebates, or not includng rebates?

    Here in Colorado, rebates are taxable. While this is very unfortunate, it is explained by saying that you are paying the price for the vehicle, and then after the purchase you receive the rebate money back to you. The argument that you gave up the rebate to the selling dealer at the time of the purchase is not an accepted argument. Why? Because the state wants more sales tax paid to them! Plain and simple...

    After shopping for almost 3 weeks..the deal I am getting for Xterra SE 2010 model i bought the SUV for a total of 27,600 Invoice price including salex tax, fees registration etc. It also has DVD docking station and Ipod interface.
    i love the SUV and the price :-)
