residual value should not be affecting MB's buyout prices. they should be looking only at auction #s. some people will have gotten better deals than others depending on time of year, lease terms etc....the good news is that you feel like you got a great deal on your car for 24 months.

sorry i dont have the most recent r350 #s. ill try to get them. based on #s that i previously posted, i think your negotiated price is still high. is this a recent # you got from them?

    steve,

thanks for pulling those r350 auction numbers from wendy. i didnt get a chance to get back over there....

as you can see, your buyout quote is right in line with the wholesale values for R350s.

What does not make sense is why anyone would spend that much for the 350 when the 500 can be had for another $1-2k....i would have expected that the R500 would be more desired now that it is no longer imported into the U.S. Not to say that the 350 isnt a good car, but the 500 never lacks for power even when pulling its 5000lbs around town or at speeds in excess of 80mph.....I really do not understand how anyone could choose a big luxury SUV over this car....the infinity and lexus cannot hold a candle to the ride or performance and the R has nearly as much interior volume.

To answer the above I called the 800 number listed on the website for MB finance. I told the lease rep that I was going to buy a different R500 from another dealer unless she could convince me not to. I complained about my residual. She asked for milage and I told her I took a dealer demo with 6000 miles and added the allowed 27k miles over the lease term. She said $25,500 not including tax. This was quoted just under 3 months out. There is no final inspection. I just cut a check. I don't know if my mile estimate had an impact on the price but I really only have a total of 20k miles on it. I think this is a great deal and will go for it. Only road block is high maintenance wife who wants a Q7.

In Oct my payoff quote was $23,500 for my 2006 R350. I just spoke to MB today and they said the incentive has gone down and my payoff would be $25,400. But they would still honor the first quote from October. Has anyone else called recently? Are you getting the same info? Thanks.

it seems strange that the 350 payoff would go up $2k...i just got off the phone with a rep at MBF who was very helpful. he did state that the prices did just go up by a few hundred dollars on the 500. he indicated that MBF will "never" sell at true wholesale - presumably this would too greatly undercut their dealers selling used cars at retail. and probably takes into account that most people either dont know about buying at auction and/or dont know how to get someone to buy for them since most of us are not used car dealers. That said, MBF sells above wholesale and below retail off lease - this makes sense since (1) they already should have made money on the lease and (2) since non MB dealers buy at auction, why would they want to forgo selling cars for just above auction prices rather than taking less at auction and just having a fraction of those cars going to their dealers. I still do not understand why MBF does not sell or floorplan off lease cars directly to their dealers that want them (or maybe they do....). The other point is that MBF would prefer that off lease customers lease a new MB and not buy their off lease vehicle - ideally off lease vehicles get marketed to a lower economic demographic.

In any event, i got offered a cash price of $26,275 inc. tax (with no remaining lease payments). My lease has two more months so i am going to wait and gamble that the price will go down a bit more. i cannot see auction prices increasing in the winter given continued economic turmoil and the fear of higher taxes and a deeper recession in '09.

MB financial finally came down from the original reduced $28,900 buyout for my R350 to $24,125. I am going to go ahead and buy it. I know I could do better at auction and actually have a friend who could buy for me, but I like all the options my car has and since i just had a baby last week I don't feel like dinkin' around to save a few thousand more. I'm totally conent on what my total out of pocket for all lease payments and purchase price is for the car. Thanks to everyone who provided info on getting the deal done.
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
still a great price for this car all things considered.
  • stevesmerstevesmer Member Posts: 10
At $24,125 - is that total out of pocket including taxes or the buyout price alone?
  • lklein1lklein1 Member Posts: 24
Buy out price alone. I think the original msrp was around $59,000--obviously no one ever paid this much for them originally. I had them add a navigation before I leased it so I can't remember what the exact price was after they added that.

the buyout on my R350 is ~$24k. I can't quite decide whether to keep it or not, so I've considered extending my lease for 6 months. However, MB Finance told me the buyout in 6 months will reflect the $38k resid from the original lease, and not the lower current offer. Does anyone know if that will actually be the case, or are they just trying to close the deal now.

My lease is due the first of December. My buyout has been $23,500. I went ahead and had the inspection done and told my advisor that the price wasn't low enough. He told me to call back at the end of the month because the cash incentive is usually changed the end of the month or at the first of the month. So I called today and to my surprise, my buyout was dropped to $20,900. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. My advice is to be patient, get a quote a month out, and then try back closer to your lease end. Hopefully you will get an even better price. Good luck to everyone.

Steve--That sounds like you got a great deal. I was told that I could buy my R350 when the 27 month lease ends at 40 percent of the original list price plus $150 fee and sales tax. Did you need to speak to a supervisor to get your deal? Thanks
  • stevesmerstevesmer Member Posts: 10
I had a different story...they told me it was based off my residual. No negotiating involved - at least directly. He was clear that he couldn't do anything but punch in the numbers and see what comes up. My residual was $38,xxx and original MSRP $58,600. The original incentive was $14,900 off residual and increased to $17,500 off. He told me the higher ups look at auction pricing, number of cars turned in vs. sold to determine the price as well as your residual. I'm not sure what to believe...I either had great timing or they felt like I was serious about turning the car in and decided to cave. Most likely it was just good timing. No, I never spoke to a supervisor, but I did speak to the same agent every time but once. The $150 fee and tax is added. I would check back every so often with the same agent and get a quote and find out the incentive and ask lots of questions. I was told my buyout price would never go higher after a quote even if the incentive changed. They would honor the lower amount or if the incentive increases, like in my situation, then I could get the better buyout price. He wouldn't offer much help but answered all my questions. I found out there is a 5 day grace period after your lease is up in which to buy or turn in the vehicle. That's why I waited until the last minute to decide. Also, if you do turn it in, there is a $600 turn-in fee. I hope this info is helpful!

Wierd. I called on Dec 1 and they lowered my buyout by another $3000. The discount is now $13,500 bringing the buyout to $23,700 or so. I had called about a month before and my buyout was $10,500. Mine is an R350 which stickered at about $54K. How did you get $17,500 off? My mileage is about 21,500.

Your post on the auction prices was very interesting. Is there a site that can be accessed to view auction results for all cars? thanks

I called MBF yesterday on my 2006 R500 and was quoted a payoff of $24k + tax. I was told this was a discount of $17k off of the residual, which seems about right. This puts the price at 40% of original MSRP and that is right inline with what others are posting here.
My lease isn't due until mid-January so I'll probably wait a few more weeks and see how things change. I forgot to ask if they would do an extended warranty or "certified pre-owned" on it if i decide to keep it. I normally pass on these things, but have had some minor issues along the way and plan to keep it for another 5+ years so it might be worth the piece of mind.

thanks everyone for all the information.

I've been debating the same approach. Thinking 08 Rclass CDI with between 9K-20K on the ticker lease return - offering 28K and working from there. The dealer pricing on the used one's are way out of whack given many of these 08's were sold between 8 and 10K below MSRP to start with with zero miles. Which means that all the R's listed in the 40K range with miles on them are all over priced given the MSRP ranged from 45-50ish new.

Anyone can share the experience of turning in the car? I have the car in the shop for service B which is going to cost me about $700 including flushing brake fluid and they are saying i need pads and rotors which cost me about $1400!!!!!!!!

I am totally going to get X5 instead of MB next time.

does anyone have an '06 R500 lease that is up in Jan? Has anyone called since Dec 9th to check on discounts? I plan to call first week in Jan...mine is up Jan 15th. I already had the lease inspection done and expect to turn it in unless the discounted buy price is close to auction values....

Also has anyone learned anything about purchasing an extended warranty at the same time as lease buy out?

I am returning my R500 first week of January. Since I have been away, I totally forgot about the DMV license fee until today. I know there is a penalty for being late since my deadline was 11/4/08. I need help with a few questions.

    1. Should I go ahead and pay that or let the dealer pay it and bill me for it?
    2. Is it true we have 5 days after the end of the lease to returne the car?
    3. Is it possible to ask for extension of a few months on my lease?

Correction on my previous message #686.

My lease expires on 2/3/09. I talked to MB today and they offered me $28688.92 for the purchase price. For the extention on the lease they want additional $140/mo.

    Irish,
The price hasn't changed this month as far as they are telling me. I called today and the price on my R500 is $24k plus taxes or ~ $26k out the door. Let me know if you hear anything different as my lease is up Jan 15th as well.

im going to call tomorrow. any word on buying an extended warranty at the same time??
  • gadgetguy1gadgetguy1 Member Posts: 4
I inquired about an extended warranty with purchase from lease and was told to ask the dealer, that MBF does not sell warranties..
Curious that you received a 24k quote for the r500, as my r350 also i quoted at 24k...
  • not_2_shabbynot_2_shabby Member Posts: 29
It seems that regardless of initial MSRP or residual, the buyouts are all being lowered to about $24K. I have a 2006 R350 that MSRP'd at $54K and my buyout is $24K. Seems somebody else had an R350 with an MSRP of $58K and their buyout was about the same.
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
I just spoke to MBF. Basically got bad news. They are only discounting me $15,236 from my stated residual of $42,035. This bring buy out to $26,999 + $150 fee. I dont think that I am keeping it.

MBF also confirmed that any extended warranty has to be purchased through the dealership..what a great way to ensure that MB dealers get a second chance to try to fleece buyers and ensure that MB customers are unhappy....i just do not understand certain aspects of this business model.

Hi, I'm new to the board. My '06 R350 lease came up in early April 2008. At that time I extended the lease for another 12 months (they charged me an additional $64 per month for those 12 add'l months). I read some of the posts on this board about the fairly attractive buyout quotes at the end of 27 month lease periods and thought I would find out what mine will be come this April at the end of my 39 months. I was shocked to learn that my buyout is $39,200. I asked why I wasn't receiving any of the incentives I had read about and the MBF told me it was because I had extended the lease at the end of the original lease term so I am ineligible. Now how can this possible make good financial or business sense? My car will have 39,000 miles on it at the end of the lease. Why won't they incentivize me to keep the car? Any thoughts or advice would be truly appreciated.
    Thanks.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Wait until the lease is almost over --- they don't want to hear from you now. Your car will probably auction out in the low 20's then so they may be more interested in offering you a deal. If they don't, walk away knowing that MB took a big hit on projecting depreciation on your car. You are the winner in this deal -- big time. That's why you lease instead of buying. When April comes around, they will be singing a different tune so relax and enjoy your R.
  • zorogriszorogris Member Posts: 11
Irish, that is a little strange. I just got the docs from MBF with the buyout numbers and this is the skinny:

    Orig. MSRP $63565
    Orig. Residual $41952 (66%)

Current Residual $24391 (38% and/or ~$17500 off original residual depending on how they present it to you.)

Total out the door $26636 (WA sales tax of 9.1%)

I only have 24k miles on it and I just don't know where I would find this nice of a car for that price (especially when I know the history) so we have decided to keep it. Thanks everyone for all of your help. If you need anything, post here and I will respond to "pay it forward".
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
    zoro,

did you request docs when you spoke to MBF?? i got an email quote (high) to my MBF online account and a slightly lower quote by phone ($15236 off my residual of 42,035). More than one person has now posted a discount of $17,500 off their residual for an R500.

    Friends:

I am also in the same situation as many of you. Like the car very much, and would like to buy it off at the right price. How should I go about negotiating it? How much should I expect to pay?

    2006 R350. MSRP $62k Residual $38k. 27-mon lease ends March '09.

Is the price based on the mileage? I drove much less than the allowed 15k miles per year.

    Financing through MB finance.

Also, should I consider getting extended warranty? How much will it cost? Can I get it from 3rd parties? A friend is high-up at Honda and can arrange a good deal. Would that be recommended?

I'm based in Southern California. Thanks.
  • zorogriszorogris Member Posts: 11
    irish,
I got the quote after talking to them on the phone first. They came right out with the $17500 off of residual. After he gave me the quote I asked them to send the paperwork so I hope that helps. Personally, I would call them back and tell them you want the same $17500 off that others are getting or no deal.

    good luck!
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Latest auction prices are $20-$22k average 1-2k above average. Below average 17-18k. They appear to be dropping.
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
i m calling them tomorrow and flat out asking for 17500 off.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Just be respectful--- make your offer and if they say no talk to the sales manager and if he/she says no communicate with the owner.
  • pepe11pepe11 Member Posts: 41
Out of curiosity, how can talking to a sales manager or even an owner of a MB dealership help in a lease buyout transaction? I thought MBF is a finance arm of MB and completely separate from dealers.
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
well, i called and was very nice.....(no there is no manager or owner to talk to at MBF remarketing).

they held firm at a discount of $15,236 even when i told them that others have gotten 17,500 off (38% residual).

the only thing i can think of is that they adjust residuals customer by customer based on the individ lease terms not solely on current market value and msrp....

for those who dont remember i leased in what was close to the "perfect storm" thanks to a handful of folks on this board who coordinated and shared info and I had the best no BS dealer/saleman a person could ask for -

    MSRP = $62,740
    Cap Cost = $46,240
    discount $16,500

    Drive-off amt = $1,372.56 ( Ca State Title Transfer fee = $15.00, 1st month payment = $508.81, MBF Bank Fee = $795.00, Ca dealer documentation fee = $45.00)

    12k miles per year

    27 months = $508.81 + tax

    Money factor = .00400

    Residual = 67% / $42,035.80

with the offered discount of $15236 my adjusted residual percentage is 42.7% after 27 mos.

including the interest component for 27 mos, i am paying $41,300 for a car (+$750 shipping from CA when new) that listed for $62,700. I purchased outright for my mother the identical car at the same time for the cap cost of $46,240....clearly I cannot complain...BUT I could turn this car in and pick one up at auction for $23-24k inc auction fees....but the add'l 2-3k to buy my car ensures that I get a creampuff with no issues, no dents, no accidents, driven gingerly for only 20k miles....sigh....

how many days after the lease ends can i hold the car before buying or turning it in??
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
my mistake -- I thought you were negotiating the purchase with the dealer. If you can buy your car for 2-3k over auction, that sounds like a pretty good deal. If it's cpo than its a great deal. When is your lease up?
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
as i was fast running out of time, i placed my last call to MBF yesterday (lease is up today).....again they tried to up my buyout by a few hundred....fortunately they did back down to the quote they gave me a few days ago (see above post).

Lease Residual = 67% / $42,035.80 - at lease end with the add'l offered discount of $15236 my adjusted residual percentage is 42.7% after 27 mos.

at the end of the day, i cannot complain about paying a bit over $41,000 for a $62k car (including financing for 27mos). the car has under 20k miles and is in perfect shape save one door ding and a need for new rubber all the way around. Dealer quotes for extended warranty are a rip off compared to GM extended warranties (apples and oranges i know but still).

    2years 75k $3542.00 or 100k $4605.75 /2012

    3years 75k $4071.00 or 100k $5313.00 /2013

considering the car still has factory warranty for 1.75yrs or 50k miles, not great options.
  • zorogriszorogris Member Posts: 11
good info irish. Crazy expensive on the warranties given the time left on the original warranty. BTW, I talked to MBF today and the discount did go down from $17k to $15k, but they honored the original quote. Sent them a check today as well. Total price paid of $40k for a loaded R500 so no complaints here. :)
  • irishrogue1irishrogue1 Member Posts: 127
So what was your out of pocket and monthly payments?
  • zorogriszorogris Member Posts: 11
$0 down. ~$600/mo + tax for the 27 mo. I looked on this board and approached several dealers with the best deal I had seen until one of them accepted it.
