we absolutely will get the GTD in the US. no question about it. we should see them in sept./oct.

    vwgreg
there is nothing official at all. however, if demand for diesels in the US rises and vw sees it as a safe venture, i would call it a pretty good chance we may see them in 2011.

Wow! Absolutely a pretty good chance.

hey Nostradamus, the GTD is absolutely not going to arrive in September/October as you stated.

Tiguan is slim chance for 2011 as there is no engine used in Tiguan that meets US emissions.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
There are several models of the Tiguan sold in the UK with the same 140 HP 2.0L TDI as the Jetta. I don't see any reason to keep them out of the USA.

you are correct regarding the tiguan. the 2.0 diesel drivetrain will format with the car no problems. no emissions issues either. the only thing holding it back would be US demand and if vw can produce enough diesel engines as they satisfy the european market for diesels before they think about the US market.
this idiot who says the GTD wont be here in oct. absolutely has no idea what he is talking about. i can see the GTDs on my vw ordering site, however i cant activate an order for one yet.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
2.0 TDI Tiguan will not pass emissions. Neither will the 2.0 TDI Passat. Both would require UREA system for the 2.0 TDI to enable certification.

Wait until October and we'll see who is more credible. I'd love to eat crow on this one as it would be fantastic if GTD was available.

I remember in 1997 when VW salespeople said there was absolutely going to be a 98 Passat TDI......
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
What is the difference between the 2.0L TDI in the Tiguan and the Jetta? Both are the same exact size and HP.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,471
I would guess that the problem is that the vehicle has to pass the standards, not the engine. In the Tiguan the engine has to work harder than in the Jetta, and so produces more byproducts; in this case enough more that it fails the standards.

I was assuming they tested the platform which I was thinking was the same. Though the AWD Tiguan would be different. Kind of like Honda was able to get the manual Transmission to pass the test with their diesel and not the Automatic.
  • jbaustianjbaustian Member Posts: 78
Once the engine passes in one vehicle, then it's just a matter of minor tweaking to get it to pass in others.

All the testing is done in an indoor lab on a rolling road aka dynamometer. So every test is identical, under identical conditions.

The Tiguan is a heavier vehicle so may require more power to achieve an equal speed at a particular point in the test. So it could consume more fuel and emit more byproducts of combustion than the same engine in a lighter vehicle.

Or maybe VWoA just doesn't know whether Americans will buy enough Tiguan TDIs with the 140 hp engine to make it worthwhile. Seems foolish to me, these are the same executives who came up with the Routan minivan, the EOS convertible, the Phaeton luxury sedan, and the Passat CC -- all of which were sales failures.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
You are right. The Tiguan is a big success with the gas engine. Should be even better with diesel.
  • anowlananowlan Member Posts: 48
Can you see what options are available on the GTD?

We were at the local dealer on Saturday, drove the Jetta TDI to make sure that 140HP would be enough (wife has an A3 2.0T, so there WAS cause for concern.) It's not as fast as the A3, but peppy enough. Then we talked in general terms about ordering a 2010 Golf TDI Grey Metallic, Sunroof, Xenons, Nav, Dynaudio, iPod adapter. They couldn't order one on 7/10/09.

We'd rather the GTD. The salesperson seemed clueless- initially he said there wouldn't be a TDI Golf in 2010, then found the spec sheet that said there would be one at the same time as a product specialist brought us a postcard of one.

So, do you know what options will exist on the 2-door GTD? When do you anticipate being able to take orders?

    Thanks.
  • vwgregvwgreg Member Posts: 22
I cannot tell for sure what the options will be on a GTD. i cannot order one yet either. when i look in my ordering website i can see no production of them thus far. i would speculate that i can get exacts on them in about 2 weeks and begin ordering them shortly thereafter.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
It would be good if VW could get the Golf TDI or GTD out in time to get some of the Clunker trades. That is if Hyundai does not pre sell all of them before the rules get sent out. Have you have many people wanting to trade an junker in on a Jetta TDI yet?
  • tonys6tonys6 Member Posts: 3
VW is smart enough to make a car then it is smart enough to give Tiguan a diesel engine. Those who claim Tiguan cannot have Diesel engine due to size and emission then they don't know much about cars.

Wait until the end of the year and see golf TDI, Tiguan, and GTD.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Those who claim Tiguan cannot have Diesel engine due to size and emission then they don't know much about cars.

Tiguan already is sold with a diesel engine in Europe so it is proven that it can have a diesel engine.

Only four months and remaining days in August until the end of the year so your prediction won't have to wait too long to be verified.

I'm on the record in earlier posts stating that only the Golf TDI will be sold in USA before the end of the year and Golf "GTD" and Tiguan TDI will not be available here in 2009.

vwgreg has stated the GTD will arrive in September or October. There are none in port and none on transports according to my sources, so time is quickly running out.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
vwgregwe absolutely will get the GTD in the US. no question about it. we should see them in sept./oct.

Still no mention of GTD availability from VWoA, no GTD's in route on transports, no availablity to order from VWoA..........

Pricing for 2010 VW TDI Golf

    Sadly, as expected, no GTD.

    Here's the correct URL:

    Golf price list
  • longo2longo2 Member Posts: 347
    Thanks for the price link,

I did a quick comparision of the 4 door Golf Gasser (no options) and the 4 door TDI (no options)

    The gasser $19,890
    The TDI $24,660

    a whopping $4770 difference.

    are we having fun yet?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The TDI does have equipment that's not on the base 2.5 though, including better audio system and alloys. But... $4770? Are diesel engines that much more expensive to make?
  • jbaustianjbaustian Member Posts: 78
There is no stripped-down model of the Golf TDI being offered currently. The standard features are not much different than the GTI, which is about $23,500 when configured closest to the Golf TDI. So a GTI with premium sound and 17" wheels is about $1500 more than the Golf.

Remember, what it costs to own a TDI is always about fuel economy and depreciation, and not about purchase price.

Maybe there will be a stripped-down version of the Golf TDI sometime next year, with 15" steel wheels, basic sound system, and no sunroof. Then look for a price around $19,500 or a few hundred more.

    2010 Golf TDI pricing

Apologize for the incorrect link earlier, and thanks for providing the correct link. I'm on TDY and my internet connection was terminating soon.

Golf TDI is highly contented compared to past Golf TDI trims. Still, it is priced at a substantial premium and I expect the cost of entry to be a problem for non diesel and non VW fans.
  • anowlananowlan Member Posts: 48
Fully loaded, this is 10% less than the base price of an A3.
This car remains highly appealing at it's price point, and I'd be surprised if it
    didn't sell like hotcakes
  • thammer62thammer62 Member Posts: 48
I've heard absolutely no word of a GTD coming to America. None. Each magazine has clearly stated that America will not get the GTD. Years from now? Who knows - that goes for any car. But for now? No GTD and whoever is making the claim that we are getting it will have to give some facts on that one. That's the one I want but will gladly settle for the standard TDI Golf. An $800 chip will give you practically the same performance as the GTD.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I wonder what the difference in suspension will be on the Golf we get in the US, to the much praised Golf GTD being tested all over the World? The extra 30 HP is not as important to me as the handling and braking. I am also hoping they come with the seats that the GTI has.
  • jbaustianjbaustian Member Posts: 78
thammer: where did you get the idea that it would cost $800 for a chip (aka remapping the engine computer)? The most I've ever paid to chip a VW TDI was around $300.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
vwgreg post 110this idiot who says the GTD wont be here in oct. absolutely has no idea what he is talking about. i can see the GTDs on my vw ordering site, however i cant activate an order for one yet.

Contact vwgreg to order a GTD, they should be at dealer very soon (according to vwgreg).
  • thammer62thammer62 Member Posts: 48
The only person who is an idiot is the person who mails "vwgreg" money for a GTD when it is impossible to get one in this country for multiple reasons. So fishy sounding. Please give some proof that it's coming or stop teasing people who believe everything they read on the lovely internet.
  • thammer62thammer62 Member Posts: 48
I actually meant to hit 3 as in $300 instead of 800 for the chip cost. I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem but with texting now as convenient and popular as it is, the numbers are upsidedown when I type on a numbers keypad on my keyboard - and I constantly have to pause to remember which task I'm doing:

    Text #s:
    123
    456
    789
    0

    Keyboard keypad #s:
    789
    456
    123
    0

    Oh well, probably just me.

I said goodbye to my 2007 Rabbit yesterday. It was a great car which I loved to drive, and cost me only gas and insurance during the 8 months I owned it. But my wife has a bad back and it was hard for her to climb in and out of it (although she too liked driving it). Also, we recently sold our minivan and were left with two small cars. So I decided we needed a bigger car. I traded the Rabbit even-up on a 2007 Sonata, which has a higher driver's seat and a lot more room, plus the practicality of four doors. It's a better car for our situation right now. Maybe in a couple of years when we need to add another car again, I'll be able to get a Golf, or maybe find a great deal on a VW Certified 2009 Rabbit, like I did with the 2007 Rabbit.

FWIW, I paid $11k + T&L for the Rabbit eight months ago, and the Sonata's discounted price was $10,988. So with the even-up trade, the Rabbit was probably the best car I've ever owned in terms of cost of ownership.
