Has anyone heard of the blades on a cooling fan melting and breaking off? Well it happens. I had only been driving about an hour when I heard a sound like a belt breaking, then the air conditioning quit being cool. I thought for sure a belt broke. Then the motor just quit running. Not sure if the 99 degree weather had anything to do with. I have been good with keeping up with oil changes and check ups. I had noticed on the Edmunds car safty recall site that there is a notice for coolant system fans. Not sure what to do from this point. This just happend on July 29. Will post results. Anyone who has this type of vehicle needs to get this checked out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just had all the required maintenance (40,000 miles) performed about 4 months ago at my local dealership. My check engine light has come on now. It is a steady light (not flashing) and the dealer says that because the maintenance was actually performed BEFORE the odometer hit 40,000, that the light just needs to be reset. But for me to get my car into them for a half a day is a huge hassle. How can I reset the light myself? They don't want to share that info with me.
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
Try unhooking the battery. You'll have to reset the clock, but I believe that'll reset the computer on most cars.

i am a little overdue for an oil change - would this make my check engine light come on? (just came on today)
  • crazedcommutercrazedcommuter Member Posts: 281
Some companies do set the "check engine" light to coincide with the oil change intervals. My Scion light comes on every 5k miles to remind the driver for the oil changes. I reset it after I chenge my own oil.

diagnostic code reads: P0140 02sensor circuit no activiy detected (bank 1 sensor 2)
somewhere i found the code to mean the oxygen sensor. The owners manaul suggests to first start with the fuses. Then the wiring, and last the sensors. Checking the fuses was easy .... they are not blown. Now I am lost as I have no idea where to look for wiring, or where the oxygen sensors are located. Can anyone help?
  • rgarrisonrgarrison Member Posts: 10
I had the same problem. You have to change the o2 sensor. $105.99 at autozone only go with oem part.
  • rgarrisonrgarrison Member Posts: 10
Can you clean the o2 sensors on a 2000 kia sportage?
  • cwoodardcwoodard Member Posts: 6
thank you! alhou I did change the wires and coils, and the check engine lite stayed off for almost 2 days, in which I got it thru D.E.Q. and it passed!!! The lite is back on, then off, now on.... so thats my next project!! I appreciate the advice to stay with the OEM part.... and I did find an illustrated guide on line thru the official kia site on how to do everything and where everything is located!! Maybe something I should post for everyone? again thank you!

you have to sign up, but it costs nothing!!
once you are at the site, in the left column, click on ETM
it takes you to another screen. On the header of the main screen you need to select your model, year, control unit, and option. Once you have done that, use the column on the left to type in what you are looking for, such as brakes, spark plugs, etc, Good Luck .... its been a life saver for me!!

"thank you!" I most definitely will show the questions and answers. The questions I would answer and was not clear with, is if anyone is having a problem with the web site and how to perform a search.
  • rgarrisonrgarrison Member Posts: 10
Loss of power and top end speed.Any suggestions...
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Try an Advanced Search (on the left sidebar) for "loss of power." You may want to limit the search to the Maintenance & Repair board. Maybe you'll get some ideas to try while waiting for responses in here.

Most of the results I found focused on fuel system issues, but there are lots of other causes including tranny problems, bad ECUs, etc. I didn't make a search pass using "top end speed."

You may want to try posting over in Got a Quick, Technical Question? too. Good luck!
  • cwoodardcwoodard Member Posts: 6
have you checked the veichle speed sensor at all? I remember you had already changed the 02 sensor so that maybe not be the problem now. +
  • rgarrisonrgarrison Member Posts: 10
Good idea. Didnt think of that thanks.
  • rgarrisonrgarrison Member Posts: 10
Could the problems ive been having with the speed and rpm be the catalitic converter?
  • bmorrealebmorreale Member Posts: 7
thank you much cwoodard. that website you posted definately helped me out a lot.

my 98 died while driving down the road...it didn't shut off...it just didn't recognize me pressing the throttle. i got it to the side of the road, then it died. it now won't restart. i changed the fuel pump in it, still nothing. i checked the fuel pump relay and fuse, both are good. i'm very confused... any ideas would be greatly appreciated. please e-mail me. morrbnb@gmail.com

both headlights to the kia went out at exactly the same moment.is this possible or could there be another explanation? we heard a clicking from the steering colum before they went out. please help!
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
went out at exactly the same moment

It's entirely possible but very unlikely. The sound you heard was probably a fuse being blown. Have you lost power to anything else?

In any case, I'd have my dealer look for a root cause.

Any ideas on the catilitic converter limiting my speed and rpm. Im sure if it clogs its just as bad as the intake air cloging.

your right, it would be more beneficial to everyone to have the info left right here on the page rather than in my personal e-mail.

i'm beginning to think my problem might be something electrical, with the fact that the the fuel pump isn't pressurizing. i'm going to check it out today. i'll try to let y'all know as soon as i do. Not looking forward to trying to follow the electrical lines in this crowded pos. it's like they took a 6 foot engine compartment and tried to put 12 feet of stuff in it.

I test-drove a new 2006 V6 Sportage automatic with AWD yesterday. I really liked the look and feel of it. However, as I was turning up the first hill, the steering wheel seemed to lock (lost its power, I guess). I said nothing to the saleman. But as I completed the turn and started up the steep hill, the car just stopped. I had never experienced something like this while driving, and my current car is rather old (97 Explorer). The salesguy put the emergency brake on, I restarted, and all was fine. But that did not leave a good impression. The guy said this had never happened/he could not explain it.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this? Fortunately, my timetable to get a new car is anywhere from 2 to 12 months, so I am not pressed. But I really wanted to like the car, which I did besides what seems to be a major issue.

found the prob was not the o2 sens. clogged cat converter

Every so often my Sportage just WILL NOT start. I took my Sportage to the dealer two days ago but they couldn't find the problem. I have a brand new [diehard] battery, but once in a while the car is dead. I put the key in the ignition and all the icons that are supposed to illuminate will come up but when I turn the key to start-it, nothing happens. I will come back--let's say--two hours later, it will start immediately (as if nothing had ever gone wrong). Sometimes I have to wait two days for it to start. It has nothing to do with weather or relative atmospheric humidity. It just does it once in a while (every 6 months or so). The dealer checked the alternator and they say that it is fine. They did clean all the connections to the alternator. I brought the car home from the dealer went inside to get some stuff to run errands. I came out about 15 minutes later and the car wouldn't start!!!!!! I love this car but I need one that can be depended on to start. Any ideas? I'm going to bring it to a new repair place if I can get it started.

once that would do this and I had to get out, open the hood and bop the starter solenoid with a screwdriver's head a few times. Then I'd hop back in and the little ponycar would fire right up!

It is worth trying anything and everything now so try it(I don't know if the Sportage's have starter solenoids, sorry)or ask the dealer about starter solenoids, or any other part that has starting your Sportage in it's job description. Your dealer is supposed to be able to help you in these types of matters. Post back what you find out. I own a '01 Kia Sportage 4x4 with 124,900 miles, so I'm keenly interested in what you find out. Good fortune to you, prego.

I recently bought a '95 Sportage 4x4 4dr. base Mdl. and the ABS light is always on. I ran the diagnostics (9 flashes) and was directed to check out the speed sensor & ABS Control Unit. Speed sensor ckd. out OK. To my surprise, when I removed the padded panel beneath the stearing column, there was no ABS Control Unit! I called the dealer and gave them my VIN# and they told me my ar did NOT have ABS??? Why is the ABS light on in the dash if it does not have ABS? Anyone???

I leased a 1998 Kia Sportage. During my ownership of this
vehicle the right front fender treatment (which was painted
a different color than the car) paint started to peel off.
I brought the car back to the dealer and they replaced it
at no charge. After that incident the other 3 fender treatments and the rocker panel treatments began to experience the same problems with the paint peeling off. I did not have them repaired as I was about to turn the car in due to lease end. At the time of turn in to the dealer this problem was noted by the dealer. They have tried to collect damages from me for this problem and I refuse to pay! Does anyone know of articles that have been published concerning this problem?

I own a 2006 V6 4x4 and it is an awesome SUV. I do not know why you experienced this problem. However, I would not it deter you from them as they are great.

    Thanks for the tip
I went on the KIA site, did everything up to the page with all the different sections of control unit, click on one of those,"now downloading" appears, then nothing happened.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

In 1998, my husband and I had a 1998 Kia Sportage with defective paint problems. The dealership actually had a guy come down from NJ. He inspected our Kia and determined the paint was defective from factory and they replace the vehicle with a new 2000 Kia Sportage. He told us they could try and repaint the vehicle but under warranty we would just be back again with paint problems before the warranty was up and they would then have to keep repainting the vehicle. It was easier to just replace the defective one. The dealer needs to have someone come in and inspect this paint job from Corporate then the dealership would get their money. You shouldn't be responsible for this defect. It took him six weeks before he could look at it but he flew in to MD from NJ to inspect it. He was a ex-paint specialist from Dodge Motor Corp.

Contact: Kia Motors America, Inc. Eastern Region, 3000 Atrium Way, #400, Mt. Laurel, NJ 08054 Phone: 1-888-886-3228, Opt. #2. This was on his business card.

    Hello,

I urge you NOT to purchase a 2006 Kia sportage. We bought one last feb and are in the process of completing paperwork to pursue a Lemon Law case. Our 2006 sportage stalls in traffic.... without warning. It is an usafe vehicle. Ours has been in the shoppe for repairs 3 times. the first time, they said it was a clogged thing a ma jig.... which they claimed to have fixed and guaranteed the issue was resovled. Within 1 week we were back for the SAME stalling issue... this time they replaced the throttle and said it was fixed... this lasted for about 2.5 months and it stalled again. I drive my children in this car... everytime i go thru and intersection, i hold my breath wondering if the engine is going to stall and will this be the time we get hit!! It is a horrible car... cute, but not safe.

    Hi!
Just had a similair problem. I have a 2000 Sportage. In the past 2 months i had to have them replace the spark pulled. One came unthreaded (almost blew out of the cyclinder) and melted/bent over and was causing a small fire each time it sparked. We fixed that $400 and then about a week later, i couldn't seem to get it past 45mph on the highway. Turned out to be a clogged catalytic converter. Going to cost $1700 to fix because Kia decided to make theirt converter in two pieces. Very spendy! I have had the car since 2002 and since then i have always had the check engine light on, replaced a fan clutch, sensor in the drive shaft, mechanical/spark plug issues and now the cat probs.
    Good luck!

My 2006 Sportgage has less than 8,000 miles on it. Lately, I am having sporadic starting problems. It justs cranks and won't start. I have to shut it off, try again and actually hit the gas pedal right as I stop turning the key. Ridiculous. I had a Sorento for 3.5 years and never had a problem like this. It's not the cold. My garage is 55 degrees in the winter and today it was 60+ outside. Yesterday it was 60. It wouldn't start twice today. I buy my gas the same place I've bought my gas for 2.5 years. It's not pinging or shuddering when I turn it off so it's not bad gas. I live in Colorado so it's not humidity or condensation(at least that seems unlikely). I also noticed it smells extremely rich when I start it, but no check engine light. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow only so they can tell me they can't duplicate the problem or tell me what's wrong with it. Anyone else have this problem please email me.

I got my 1st sportage, brought it home, got to looking at the paint it had dings all on the front of the hood. After they 'rubbed' the paint there were swirl marks. After a weeks 'discussion' they decided to trade it for another truck. 2 months into having this one, it stalled in traffic, almost getting me ran over by a semi. Cat converter clogged. They replaced that. Then the relay switch went out. Replaced that. Then air flow went out. Now, the check engine light comes on when its cranked. After being on for about 10 mins it goes off. Turn it off, its back on for another 10 mins. Had the 30k mile service done yesterday, the light is still on! The guy in the service dept said he's never seen one vehicle with so many problems. Seems to me they would find the problem and fix it before returning the vehicle to me after paying them 520$$ to 'fix' my truck! So my question is, is it the truck or the service dept??? Or maybe both. Either way, I'll never buy another Kia or recommend to any one to purchase one. :lemon:

I also have a 2000 Kia Sportage and my engine light stays on all the time. I was advised that I need to replace the Exhaust Manifold & Exhaust Manifold Gasket & O2 sensor. The engine light went off after they fixed the above, but came back on shortly after. Have you gotten your repairs yet?
  • parker5gparker5g Member Posts: 2
Was reading your postings. I have had problems with my engine light as well. I replaced the manifold exhaust and the exhaust gasket and the o2 sensor. Soon after the light went off, but then came back on. No-one can seem to figure out why?
