  • Hi, I'm curious to know what the outcome was? I have a 2008 w/same issues and they act as if they have never heard of this!

    I had same issues on a 2006 Commander; check the Technical Service Bulletions that I posted, &, I had posted that an independent mechanic who is a jeep enthusiast & specialist showed me that at 40,025 miles many fluid hoses were cracked & had to be replaced and replacing these made a huge difference in the reliability of the engine, I.e., replaced transcooler lines, steering line from pump to cooler, power steering hyd pressure line.

    That said, the commander has more problems: leaking sunroof, flashing/strobe light dashboard, cruise control turns on by itself & park assist turns off, headlight covers aren't aligned so moisture seeps in., etc.

    The Kelley blue book value, please post here how close to that you get if you trade it in as I'm planning on doing so as well.
  • I bought my 2007 Commander used and it was just now about a year ago. Since then I have had it in the service department roughly 15 times and also at different service locations. Each time they have never been able to understand the problem. The first time it stalled out while my wife was driving down the freeway at 70mph. When I took it to them and told them they told me they would honor it as a good faith warranty and replaced the front right speed sensor for free. I thought that the issues was resolved but then it continued to stall out however not while I was accelerating. Typically only stalls when I am coming to a stop and most recently when it is cold it seems to play a big part in the stalling. But after the initial issue, it continued to happen and I continued to take it in per the instruction of "Chrysler Customer Care". Each time they would hand me a rental while they attempted to "duplicate" the issue. This happened for approximately 4 months. While they finally came to the conclusion that my spark plugs needed to be changed?!?!?!? So I changed them out...and the issue continued. Took it back to them and they were once again unable to determine what the issue was. They then contacted the "Chrysler Engineers" whom then told them that the wires that ran to the coils were too close and that they needed to be rearranged. Needless to say this didn't solve the issue either...they finally came to the conclusion that the computer module was faulty. So they then replaced it and told me that everything was good and all their tests came back clear. But, they then decided to let me know they were no longer honoring it in good faith and I was told to fork over $500.00 before I could get my car back. Unfortunately, I did...and two days later it did it again. So now I am unable to figure out what the issue is and so is every place I take it. Escalated my issue with Chrysler which appears to do nothing, but give me another person that tells me to do the same thing "take it in and have it diagnosed". I'm done with them...and now I'm hoping I can just get out from underneath it as soon as possible as it is pretty much our daily driver and it continues to have these stalling issues. But, yet Chrysler doesn't seem to be concerned with the lives of their customers...I would be more than happy to join in on a class action suit and would be ecstatic to gather all of my documents and information on this issue. Other than this issue it has been a great vehicle which is very upsetting because my wife wanted an Explorer, but I sold her on Jeep because of their reliability...Currently has 55k and its a HEMI if that makes any difference.
  • In 2008, I bought my 07 Jeep Commander as a demo from the dealer. For a couple of months the commander was completely fine. Everything has gone wrong since the 35,000 mile mark. Being a collage student it hard to keep on pumping money into a car, that can't be fix. I have had the stalling problems, water leaks, starter problems and many of other thing. The jeep dealer has a list of every service appointment's from oil changes to the stalling problems and on. I'm tried of have a car sitting in a parking lot that I can't drive because I don't know when it wants to work. Jeep company need to recall the commanders for everything. It doesn't make since that I have to rent a car every time I want to go out of town. When I have a car with less then 65,000 that have had all the work done that the owner need to do of a regular bases. Jeep get your act together. These cars are getting out of control.

    I'm in exactly the same spot. I now haven't driven the Jeep in more than a month because I feel like it will just fall apart literally at the seams. It's at 64k miles. Once it started leaking so much water that puddles are forming AND the cruise control turned on by itself at the same time that the park assist turned off by itself, I got the feeling that this Jeep is a danger to others on the road.

    Am I wrong?

    That said: are you aware that if you call Chrysler Corporate and make formal complaint they will consider refunding you all or partial for repairs? I have had NO SUCCESS with this 'offering' of Chrysler-Jeep, i.e., they have determined not to cover the repairs thus making the efforts for restitution on my part simply a waste of my time but you may have better luck. More: the Chrysler-Jeep customer service represenative, Luis, that I have unfortunately been assigned to is so obnoxious and unaware of the seriousness of these inherent design flaws, i.e., make sure you do not get Luis if you pursue this reimbursement strategy.

    You said you are a college student, if it happens to be a Business Major or MBA or even a Poltiical Science Major, think about making it a case study in the results of government bailout of US auto-industry, i.e., prior to that bailout Jeep did not have these sorts of customer service problems because their proprity was to cultivate long term repeat customes (which i was until this purchase; my 3rd AND LAST Jeep purchase).

    This bailout of the auto-industry that I believe this Jeep problem, our dissatisfaction and the threat these Jeeps pose everyone driving alongside us, is, the only thing standing between my vote going to the Obama Campaign or to his opposition in the next presidential election.

    Fortunately a local Jeep Dealer (Manhattan Jeep, NYC) discovered this and provided me a bolt free of charge whiel they were making Jeep Recall Adjustments on the brakes.

    That said: has anyone else had problems with their caliper bolts coming loose from the Jeep Commander?

    I literally could have killed someone driving with that bolt being loose.

    Needless to say this service manager at Jeep Manhattan gave me a bit of hope that even if Chrysler Jeep Corporate is inept and the dealer that I purchased from in Connecticut is equally inept, that other Jeep Dealers can very well still be acting with total integrity. Needless to say, the sunroof water leak will go to Jeep Manhattan for repair (though only now that i have received no less than 4 opinions as to what the problem is and how much it should cost to make the repair; Jeep Corporate and the Jeep Dealer I purchased from in CT have done Jeep's reputation a real diservice by not attending to Commander problems thoroughly).

    we have a 2008 jeep commander that keeps stalling while driving and recently would not even start in our driveway. A roadside assistance member from ford came about 10 hours later and it started right up, the dealership keeps telling us they find no problems, we read all the complaints from other people is anyone involved in a class action suit yet???

    there doesn't seem to be a class action yet.

    call Jeep Chrysler Corporate and make sure that you haven't missed one of the safety recalls regarding the stall problem. INSIST that they go through every safety recall. if you can - ask to be connected to Claire - she has been THE ONLY Jeep Chrysler customer service represetative who understands the frustration of Commander Owners, and she is the one that discovered I was not informed of the safety recall which covered one of my ongoing safety concerns; if you get Luis, ask for another representative.

    inspite of my contacting Jeep Chrysler regarding the stall that resulted in new starter at my expense (at 30k miles) and my contacting them about the stall i experienced while driving (accelerating slightly up slight inclines after having to slow down) they neglected to inform me that there was indeed a safety recall on the latter stall problem, i.e., they only discovered-revealed to me that this safety recall pertained to me when i called about the leaking sunroof, cruise control turning on by itself while park assist turned off by itself, etc.; I had been driving the commander for over a year past the date that the safety recall was published, and, i had made my complaint to Jeep Chrysler a 11 months before this same safety recall was issued.

    I have a 2006 Commander and last summer I started experiencing engine hesitation while it was automatically shifting into the next gear. At times the engine would cut out and die, leaving me to pull off to the side of the road to restart the engine. I took it into the local Chrysler dealership and they put it on the computer and found that the EGR valve faulted. So I paid to replace that. Not even a week later, I experienced the same thing. Took it in again and they found that the intake manifold was cracked. Well, from what I was told from other auto mechanics, the manifold can be cracked accidentally when an EGR valve is replaced. Well, ended up paying for the manfold because the dealership wouldn't admit fault. Still experienced the hesitation and the stalling. Sometimes, the engine would stall and the cruise control would not work until the next time the engine stalled or after taking the Jeep to a dealership to have the computer error cleared (which also cost me $$). Finally, about a month after the manifold was replaced, the hesitation and the stalling stopped. That was September. Now, last night, hesitation shifting down from a coast to stop at a stop sign and a stall shifting into the next gear after that very stop. Now, being in IL, weather is starting to change again, warming up, and gas prices are going up and gas mixture is changing again (from "winter blend" to "summer blend"). Could it be possible that there is bad gas or some type of problem with the engine dealing with the warmer temperatures/humidity? Has anyone else had this thought?

    I am so frustrated! I have a new driver and she can't be driving our only vehicle if the engine is going to shut down on her. I can't believe that all of us have this problem and Chrysler isn't doing a single thing about it. This is DANGEROUS!!!!

    I am also having the strobing/flashing dashboard lights problem. After paying $$$ for a new battery, no change.

    regarding your stall problem: get your VIN # from inside of car (not from Chrysler Jeep Dealer receipts) and call Chrysler Corporate and ask them to check that your Jeep has gone in for all safety recalls. I had done this and they kept telling me that it had been serviced for all safety recalls, and, then when i called to complain about the 'park assist shut off/cruise control turn on' they informed me that i had an oustanding safety recall that addressed my stall problem (it was not totally stalling but like lagging if i had to go from highway speed to a full stop and then say quickly enter traffic). the recall had been announced about 2 months after i first reported this problem; but, i was never informed of it until i called 2 years later regarding these other electrical safety concerns.

    also, try another chrysler jeep dealer or try an independent service jeep specialist; i found that the dealer that i purchased from did not inform me of safety recalls or technical service bulletions but instead 1. charged me for the repairs, and 2. that each time the Commander went in for a simple oil change it came out within a 10mile drive needing a $400-$500 repair. This was not a problem when i brought it to the jeep dealers that i had purchased prior jeeps from.

    also, refer to the consumer reports recently published, i.e., the jeep - not commander but cherokee, but it says alot about Chrysler Jeep's concern with it's reputation - costs on average $15k more than the BMW SUV over a 5 year period.

    Thank you for the tips, itabot. Sadly, there aren't very many Jeep dealers around anymore but I will start looking for a specialist. I have been having multiple problems with this dealership. I enjoyed 14 years out of my Cherokee before it was totalled but this vehicle has been nothing but problems. I have emailed Chrysler a copy of my original post. Will wait and see if anything gets done about it.

    As for the valve replacement. I understand if there is too much tightening, the manifold will crack. The way the crack was found was with a smoke test. The dealership thought that both of those problems caused the stalling issue but neither fix has helped.
  • I bought my Jeep Commander 2007 Ltd approximately 6 months ago. Two days ago, while driving down the tollway at 70 mph, it stalled. Frightening to say the least! Then over the next few days, the problem continued to get worse and stalls at lights, while driving, after starting. I have called Chrysler and they act like they have never heard of it. My friend found this site, thankfully. Today, I reported issues to Chrysler and was told to take it to an authorized Jeep Dealer. I understand that Chrysler will not do anything, but if EVERYONE that is having issues would please call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 to report safety defects in your vehicle. You can also complete a report online at https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/. I did both and will be contacted by an investigator within the next 24-48 hours. Going around Chrysler and having everyone report that incidents will get noticed. If you complain to the banks about their fees they look the other way. You have to go OVER their head. Please call!! And let me know if their is a lawsuit. I'm interested.

    But consumers say the problem is more widespread than Jeep admits

    ConsumerAffairs.com -- March 3, 2008 -- Chrysler is recalling 1,338 of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander SUVs to repair a stalling problem in the vehicles.

    The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the “the front control module may have been incorrectly manufactured. This could cause the engine to stall while driving or nor to start.”

    The safety agency also reported that the windshield wipers on the vehicle may fail. “Engine stalling or inoperative wipers could cause a crash without warning,” NHTSA said on its web site.

    ConsumerAffairs.com readers report that the stalling problem is far more widespread than just a handful of 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Commanders.

    In Arlington, Texas, Joanna said her 2006 Jeep Commander stalls without warning “during turns which are both from moving and stopped positions. ”It occurs during cold and hot weather, with electrical devices on or off, in park, neutral and drive,” Joanna said.

    From Anniston, Alabama, Deanna reported a similar condition with her 2000 Grand Cherokee.”I can be traveling 65 mph or less or sitting in the drive-through when it stalls. All power is lost," she said.

    Deanna said her Jeep is now dangerous to drive and she is afraid to get behind the wheel.

    Elizabeth in El Paso Texas agreed.

    “I too have been having stalling problems with my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo,” she wrote. “I am scared to drive on the highway because it sputters and stalls suddenly. The problem has not been found. We have replaced the fuel pump, but the problem continues.”

    Chrysler should do something about all of the stalling problems," Elizabeth warned. “By searching online, I found that dozens of people have the same problem with their Jeep. Too many people have had the same thing happen while driving.”

    For Jeeps part of the limited recall just announced, dealers will inspect the front control module and replace it if necessary. Jeep owners can contact Chrysler about the stalling problems at 1-800-853-1401 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

    Hey Tex, Thanks for posting the 2008 article to make it easier to report these problems. I'm one of the lucky ones who has been happy with my 07 Commander purchase almost a year and a half ago. The nearest problem that has happened to me is that with my long legs, my knee has hit the ignition key twice and it made the car shut down. It acts like some sort of short in the ignition, which I have proposed in this thread as one possible place to track down problems. The solution in the above 08 article mentions the computer module and most people seem to agree that is the culprit.

    also, something i notice with Jeep Chrysler, in addition to not informing me of this recall even when i was someone complaining to them about this very stall problem just a month before the recall was issued, maybe because the dealer entered the wrong VIN number on my paperwork and maybe because Jeep Chrysler Corporate is purposely being negligent, when i call in to Jeep Chrysler with the VIN number about TSBs and recalls, their reply is "though there is a safety recall for this problem in Jeep Commanders your Jeep Commander's VIN number is not part of the recall.' you would think their reply would be though your VIN isn't listed as part of the recall if you are having the same problem and it's a safety issue, we need to take care of it, right?

    I purchased my 2007 Commander in Feb. 2011. It has not stalled completely but has tried to when sitting at a light. I had not thought to much about it until now. Just add that to the list!

    My problem now is the REAR DRIVE SHAFT! I know there are 10 others (at least) on back order. My Commander cannot be driven it went in at the beginning of March and I have not seen it since. I had taken the Commander in to the dealer in February because of the serious vibration at 50 mph or higher. The dealer balanced the tires and thought the problem was solved. I took it back in a couple of weeks after I was on the highway and the serious vibration was still a problem. It turned out to be the rear drive shaft. The dealer tried to send the part out to be rebuild however it could not be fixed. They ordered the rear drive shaft and now we sit and wait.

    Chrysler is being of no help or assistance at this time! They put a rush on my order however they cannot give me a date for the part. They have their money for the car so it does not concern them if I have to make payments on a car that cannot be driven! I am looking for the other Commander owners that are also sitting a waiting for a new drive shaft!

    I do not understand how it takes 2 months to come up with a rear drive shaft!!!

    so strange that mine went in for a new engine valve and then they drove it and the 'subtle bump' feeling i had when shifting gears, i.e., reverse to drive turns out to be that the bushel has been worn down and needs to be replaced; i'm picking it up friday.

    the cost of the bushel itself is about $70 but the labor is about 2 hours. that said, if you are getting this done at an independent repair shop, see if you just need a new bushel; if you are getting it done at jeep dealer they are replacing the whole shaft on a a car that - let's be honest - isn't going to last forever. if they aren't charging you that's one thing, but if they are think about if you really need to install or new or just keep car running perfectly for as long as you think you will get your value out of it.

    Also, the reason that the rear drive shaft bushel is getting worn down - on my commander that is only at 65k miles - is that though Jeep Chrysler recalled for the problem that is at the heart of these damages to the bushels and rear drive shafts when they do the recall repair Jeep Chrysler isn't repairing all of the parts that are worn down prematurely by 'the reason for the recall'

    Sorry - this is a long post...

    I had a 2006 Jeep Commander Limited 4x4 Hemi - had relatively few problems over the 3 years that I owned it. Sadly someone ran a red light and totaled it for me. I LOVED my Commander so I bought a 2008 Overland 4x4 Hemi in 2009.

    Wow, what a mistake that was. I bought the car with 4500 miles from a dealer. Had leak issues from day 1. This Jeep had a cracked windshield, which the dealer had replaced. The people that did the work did a terrible job - broke my rain sensor. Windshield continued to leak, plus leaks right above the "oh shoot" handles. After about 8 months, finally got all the leaks worked out. Leaks have returned to the "oh shoot" handles. The dealer I took it to notified me that whoever did the windshield did a horrible job and I need to replace the windshield. Dealer I bought the car from went out of business so I'm stuck with this $300-$400 fix.

    Struts had to be replaced at about 45,000 miles - I don't even go off road that much and probably like most people here, my Commander is my baby and I take really good care of it.

    I haven't had the dash lights problem but I have had constant problems with the Navigation / Entertainment system. Sometimes the display in the front won't come on or it will go off after the car is already on - but it is weird because the display is black but you can see lights around the sides. UConnect is constantly losing its mind. My rear DVD display has gone out completely (at 50,000 miles). Again, no abuse. They want $800 to fix that.

    Rear hatch will sometimes open with a button, sometimes not. It likes to fake you out like it is going to open, then when you reach for the handle, it sucks shut. It mocks me. Replaced the shock on it once when it quit working entirely (around 30,000 miles). Of course it wasn't under warranty. Around $100 fix - but it isn't really fixed.

    I had a full tune up done (spark plugs replaced and everything) around 30K-40K - not sure on other years but this year uses the old copper spark plugs that have to be changed every 30K. You can't use platinum plugs, read that could be a source of some stalling issues.

    The big issue - the stalling. That started around 45,000 miles. Started with dying while sitting at stop lights. Had to turn the key off and pull it out put it back in - car starts fine. Then it started stalling driving down the road. I never had the lights blink or any "codes" that showed up. Took it to the dealer 2x they didn't find anything wrong.

    Then it died on the freeway at 60+ mph. I was driving along then noticed hey, I am slowing down but my foot is on the gas. Could not restart until I pulled the key out of the ignition and put it back in. Took it back to the dealer - they replaced 2 sensors. 1 was for the transmission and 1 was an engine sensor but I don't remember which one. 4WD service light came on around that same time - they said it wasn't related and I paid to have the 4WD serviced. 2 sensors were covered by my warranty (about $100 each).

    That fixed the problem for a few months. Car was running better than ever. Then it started running rough, engine light coming on. I read that could be the gas cap so made sure it was good and sealed. Problem went away.

    Then, driving down the road - starting noticing jerking. Like the transmission is disengaging then engaging. Not constant, just 1 or 2 times then everything is fine. Then it started dying again. I can see the RPM's go up if I push on the gas but there is NO forward momentum. Sometimes I get lucky and the transmision will reengage and everything is fine. Sometimes it doesn't and the car dies. On the freeway, 75 mph it just jerked then died. I had to coast to the side of the road - dodging 18-wheelers - trying to restart does not work. You have to pull the key out and put it back in to restart. Service 4WD light came back on shortly after the incident but then cleared before I got it to the dealer. As of today, it has been at the dealer 4 days and they can't find the problem. There are no codes. They said they would open a case with Chrysler to see if others are reporting the problem - I told them to just google it - lots of people complaining. At least they are trying.

    This problem scares me to death because this is my families primary transportation. What happens if it stalls when we pull out in traffic? I can't believe Chrysler hasn't had a lawsuit on this problem. I'm certainly in if one is started.

    I still owe money on this car and Lord knows I can't afford to replace it. Besides, I would hate for someone to buy this car and get killed in it. And honestly, how much do you think we can get for trade-in on a car with a long wrap sheet of problems? It just makes me sick.

    I'll post back with any dealer updates...

    I'm in very much similiar spot that you are in with this Jeep, i.e., I owe on it (as of this past week's repairs i have paid on non-anticipated maintenance of this Jeep as much as I still owe on it) and am not comfortable selling it to someone else. The independent repair shop that I go to recently gave me some great guidance: expect to pay $1,500 per year on it for maintenance and a liitle more every 2-2.5 years for new tires. regarding the stall problem, you should check my posts; the repairs - not dealership recalls and/or dealership repairs which have every time resulted in nothing more than me having a new problem and having to have car towed back - done by the independent repair shop have all really focused on leaking transmission lines, steering lines, i.e., the corrosion of seals, tubes, etc., and with those repairs the stalls have stopped.

    also, recently, and i haven't posted yet because i just picked up Jeep last week, there was a kind of stall feeling that as it turned out was a worn out bushing that was giving an 'about to stall sensation' as i was they explained about to lose the entire rear axle/rear driving shaft. the wearing out of this bushing at such a low mileage is result of the collateral damage caused by the reason for one of the safety recalls...

    Geez, so the bushing problem, is that covered by a recall?

    I read your other posts and mentioned your success to my husband and my dad - they thought it was strange that transmission lines / hoses could cause the stall problem but admitted it could be a vacuum issue? On my Jeep it literately feels like the transmission disengages before a complete stall. How much was it to get all those lines replaced?

    Doesn't it worry you that if you are spending $1500 / year to maintain this vehicle - what will it be at 8 or 10 years old? I keep my cars for a long time because it is usually cheaper to maintain than buy a new one. But I don't know about this one.

    We are planning a trip to Colorado to do Jeep trails and this problem is so random I am worried we'll be stranded on the side of a mountain somewhere (or worse).

    And I'll reiterate, this sucks because I really, really, like my Jeep and there is no other SUV on the market that I want. But I also have the safety of my family to think about - including my little 4 year old.

    More concerning than the independent repair shop advising me to budget $1,500/year to get 250,000 miles out of it (its at 66,579 today) was not having any idea of how much more this jeep could cost me. They gave me that $-figure when I asked if they thought I could get it to last 90,000 miles; I drive maybe 800-1000 miles/month. I also keep my cars a long time, including BMW, jaguar & 2 jeep wranglers; I purposely traded a jaguar in for this jeep in order to reduce my maintenance costs, but, obviously this jeep is exponentially more in maintenance. Worse, the maintenance on this jeep is not regular wear & tear, a.k.a. To be anticipated costs it's mostly been repairs due to corroded materials & parts that were original to the car at manufacture.

    And, no, the bushing problem is not covered by recall. I'd prefer now to not ever bring this jeep in to another jeep dealer because every time it has been touched by the dealer I drive it only so far away as it then needs at least a $100 tow & $350-400 servicing 'not related to the recall repair' I just drove it away from. I'm certain that the repairs at dealer are a waste of time and it's best to find a jeep expert at an independent repair shop.

    Please tell me that you've gotten this problem fixed. I'm having the same problem - I drive down the road and my Commander starts to turn itself off but starts back up. On occassion when my husband has driven it, it has turned itself completely off driving at full speed - losing all power steering. I am scared to death to drive it - to ride in it - or to let my son be in it. I am so afraid that we will be rear-ended. We have taken it to a Jeep Dealer several times and they have "found" different things that need to be changed out but still it has not fixed the problem. I am ready to tell these people to drive my Commander on the interstate if they really think they have fixed the problem ... I will NEVER buy another Jeep again!!! ps: my Jeep is 5 yrs old and we are the only owners.

    Yes & no; the car is still not how any car - never mind a Jeep that has been so well maintained & is only at 66kmi should run. Every single repair done be jeep dealer in CT resulted in further & more costly repairs being necessary within 1 day of picking it up. My best advice is to find an enthusiastic independent repair shop with a mechanic who specializes in Jeeps. If I had not been referred to him I would have spent thousands more & the car would not be running dependably. Now, while its still sometimes 'weak' i feel that it's reliable; that said, I never let it miss it's 3k check up & I'm prepared to make the $1,500 in repairs annually.
  • Susano....I believe my issue started when I had my friend who is a car entusiast tune up my car. The Commander's seem to be ultra sensitive. He replaced the spark plugs, but take it from me, call your Jeep dealer to find out what kind need to be used and stick with it. After replacing the spark plugs, it continued to stall. I finally had no choice but to take it to an authorized Jeep dealer and it did cost some $, but they worked with me. It came down to replacing the coils and the computer chip (whatever that is called) but it IS under warranty until 80K miles. I am NOT a mechanic, but it is my belief that the wrong spark plugs triggered a chain of events. If you have recently replaced the spark plug, have the other things done and put the right kind on there. I have not had any additional problems. After dealing with the stall for two months, I realized that #1, your steering still works, it's just very tight. Don't panic, just slow down and get to the shoulder. Once I realized my steering and brakes were still there, I didn't worry as much. But you do want to get the situation fixed so it isn't a concern.
