  • I bought this truck with 20,000 miles. Regular maintenance, put 32,000 in 4 years, nothing! Easy driving. In the past year, put 30,000 but almost all freeway miles, no towing. Yesterday it just went out, when I'd hit 3rd it would go into neutral. No warning, nothing obvious. I did have trouble getting it into drive on occasions, hard to shift and loud when it moved. I thought these truck were tuff! This truck couldn't have had an easier life. What sucks more is I bought the extended warranty because I bought it used, the date hasn't expired but I've exceeded the miles. It's a joke.
  • Does this issuse go along with the 2007 Avalanche aswell?
    I've only had mine for only two weeks and same problem just happened to me. Got it right into dealership ASAP
    Please tell me theres some solution!

  • Well Appears GM does not care about its customers. So I no longer care about GM. My 2006 Avalanche just recently had a transmission failure as well, with between 68,000 and 70,000 miles on it. I bought it new in 2006 at that time it only had 164 miles on it. I have kept it in good maintenance and have records on all the up-keep that has been done fot this truck. I will of course replace the transmission - however I will never buy another GM Vehicle for as long as I live and will constantly give that advice to all that I meet.

    Since I was an early victim (12k miles) of Avalanche transmission failure, I've continued to monitor comments on this thread. One theme in the background seems to surface from time to time...a warranty agent asks the owner 'were you towing with this vehicle?'

    If that's a question being asked by GM or Chevy regarding transmission warranty repairs, then it bothers me A LOT. Chevrolet willingly advertises the Avalanche with stated payload and towing capacities; equips most Avalanches with towing packages before shipping to dealers; and installs a transmission selector (at least on my 2010) that includes a button to select TOWING MODE. THIS VEHICLE IS ADVERTISED AS PROVIDING SIGNIFICANT TOWING CAPACITY IN ITS CLASS. So, is the question 'were you towing with this vehicle?' for statistical purposes, or is it being used as a rationale to deny a warranty claim? If it's the latter, then I think I would consult some legal advice.

    And in my case, no, I was not towing.

    The Avalanche is a vehicle that is able to tow and there is a section outlining the appropriate procedures and weight limits in the manual (for the 2012 Avalanche Manual, this section begins on page 9-66). How is the transmission repair going on your Avalanche?

  • We have now fallen victim to the transmission going. Our odometer reads 29857 and we are months outside of our warranty and GM customer service has served worthless for us. They are claiming that we denied a diagnostic warning that we received. I have my email from the night before our truck crapped out that everything checked out great and we had no warning sign or lights that came on just no drive gear. We were quoted $3400 for total cost and then we received a call that they would cover half but then the dealership stated tey quoted us the price with the discount. For a truck that is five years old this is ridiculous to say the least and there are so few miles, rest assure we will be voicing our opinion on the poor quality and lack of customer service. We paid too much for a truck that was not used to tow either that did not meet our expectations at all.

    OK, here is my story about Avalanche's transmission problem. I have a 2007 Avalanche with 64,640 miles on it. I really love the truck that is strong, quiet and very comfortable. In the past few years, I had some battery problems, and it has been changed twice, like every another year I need a new battery. I hated GM's battery but still love the truck til last night. In the past few weeks the battery problem is coming back, if I didn't drive the truck for one day, next
    day the car won't start. To keep the battery charged, I had to drive
    it every day once even I didn't need go somewhere or just run the engine for 10 minutes. Yesterday I didn't drive at daytime and by the evening I was worried about the battery will be bad next day, so I wanted to drive it for little while. It was hard to get it ignite but it did start without jumping, but
    the message "stability-control service" was shown on the dashboard, I
    thought it might be the weak battery caused computer malfunction and
    drove for about 5 minutes, and every time when I hit around the third
    gear I could feel some kind of lagged throttle move. I turned off the engine
    and turned it on again, drove less than 500 feet, felt 3 more constant lagged
    throttles one by one then the car was on the neutral, it couldn't move
    forward only could backup. This morning I called onstar service, and it
    was diagnosed ignition problem, but the engine was running during the call, so the representative suggested me get the car towed to the
    dealer. After check, the technician said the
    transmission needs to be replanced, and it will cost >$3,000. I was
    shocked, for a car only has 6 years with ~64,000 miles on it, never
    towed any thing more than 200lb (I have a small plastic boat), alway had
    suggest services, and the transmission need to be replaced? Is this GM's
    quality? I had told so many people, friends, colleagues, even some
    strangers who ever asked me how do I feel the car, I always said love
    the engine (strong and quiet), transmission (smooth), and style, but
    now I feel I'm betrayed. I expected gift for the Xmas but never though I could get this. Maybe it is time for a change and GM would never be my choice again. Shame on you, GM!

    Here is some update for my Avalanche's transmission problem. I received a call from the dealer next day and told me there are more problems than just transmission it self, and for all fix it will be cost ~$4600 plus tax (the total would be almost $4900). I couldn't believe what I heard, but what else I can do if I want my truck running again? On the same day, after I sent an email to socialmedia@gm.com told them what happend to me and asked if this is normal or common life of transmission for 2007 Avalanche, a representative from socialmedia@gm.com emailed me back and started a case file for the available options for cost assistance, and later asked my contact number, forwarded the case to a district specialist who will work with the dealership management to better consider cost assistance. The specialist never called me but I could wait for that long to get my truck back for this Sunday's planed trip. I called dealer, and they told me the specialist offered free 2 years oil change and tires rotation, and dealer will give a 10% off for the parts, so the final bill will be $4400. I think 10% off from the dealer (Lannan Chevy Woburn in MA) is the best they can do, and for the major repaires I always had some discount from them and alwasy appreciate for that. But from GM free stuff that is just nothing to me, I only drive ~10k per year, 2 years oil change might be worth ~$200, and I have my tires rotated free from Costco, so basically only ~$200 from GM for what they built and not acceptable major parts failure. Here are what were fixed for the $4400 that I paid:
    Replaced transmission $3220
    Replaced serpentine belt $98
    Perform charging system check and replaced defective alternator, road test $483
    Perform engine scan test, replaced crankshaft position sensor and clear cods $427
    I don't mind pay wear and tear, and when I bought 2007 modle I also bought 5 years warranty which was extended from manufacture's basic and paid $1000 for that, just thought about there were some major changes for 2007 modle so I need prepared for any defect or early failures. Indeed I did have some services after basic warranty expired and the $1000 was paid off already for what it was cost for the repaires. But I never though the transmission could be failed just around 6 years with 64,640 miles on it. When my friends and colleagues asked me what happened to my truck, they just couldn't believe it (I guess no body would believe it either unless you had same or worse experience wit GM's product), everybody's responds from this was GM not only produces bad products and they won't do much for their reputations to fix the problems such as this, so better stays away from GM, no body wants get a junk and hit the head a $4400 bill at Christmas. But I still appreciate socialmedia@GM's effort to set up the case quickly just wished I could get much better results than some cheap S**t from GM! And who knows what would happen to this junk in next 2 years, oh yeh I forgot, maybe I can use that $200 to balance another few thousand grand!

    More update from GM. I received a phone call from GM today (finally) but I really wished I have never had it and I guess GM should had the same feelings too, because it didn't help their reputations and just made it worse, and I'm not talking about how the representative handled the case, I don't think she has the power to make the decision. The whole conversations were GM willing to make their customers satisfied but they can't do anything more for my case at this moment because the warranty is expired. The message is here, if you don't want spend few thousand grand to fix the early failures of major parts, buy extended warranty, and not only buy one like what I had that covered 5 years, get another one for the following years, otherwise you are on the risk of your own. 6 years and 64k miles for GM is too long and too much to cover their transmission, they are not guarantied for a truck with normal driving, towing less than 200lb during summers and not even a constructor's vehicle either, also not mention it was followed suggested maintenances all the time, why? I guess every one will get the same and the only answer, they don't have any confidence for this truck. They will never put any advertisement that let buyers know some extended warranty (and not only one) is a must for this truck, but now I tell you, put two more grand for the security and have some peace in mind if you want to buy a brand new Avalanche, otherwise you better pray no such gift (lose not get few grand) arrives at Christmas! I don't need say any more Shame on you, GM! Because it looks like shameless is a better description and good luck GM for the competition with other manufactures!

    My 2005 Avalanche Transmission started slipping New Years morning just after midnight believe it or not. Later that day it completely went out. I towed it to the dealer the following day and found that the transmission was totally shot! How can this be for a vehicle with only 77k miles? This is so dissapointing. I boought it new and a new vehicle is usually not starting to be broken in until around 60K. This shows the poor workmanship of this product produced. So dissapointing. Now Im looking at $3,200 that I can not pay. I thought I was going to be a long time customer. This is my second Avalanche. Luckily now looking back I traded in the first one at around 30k miles before the problem could have started. Trust me, there won't be a third one or another GM vehicle.

    No surprises at here after what happened to my truck! And don't count on GM will give you $$$$ to balance your bill, I guess another 2 years oil and tire rotation? Can't wait to hear what offer you have, because it is out off GM's warranty! After I spent $4400 for the truck, now the truck is running again but feels not same to the before fix. I can hear some rolling clicks whenever step on the gas that I have never heard even the day before the transmission broken, no more quiet ride, and I guess if I complain to the dealer, they might say they found another problem and few hundred bucks more are needed to fix it. I asked the dealer what was wrong with the transmission they said they have no idea, open the parts and try to find if there is a defeated piece is not worth it. So nobody knows what's going on with GM's transmission after short life. Sociamedia@gm just GM pretending they care their customer but cannot help you if you have some problem with their bad product. After 2013, Avalanche will be discontinued, I wonder why and you will never know the true reason...
  • Update, I spoke with GM and they were going to review my situation. Then I was told that they needed to contact the dealer that had my vehicle before they made a decision and that they would call me back within 24 hours. Well its been 5 days and they havent called the dealer because I spoke with them yesterday myself and they said GM never called. So I called back to GM to see what is the hold up and some representive says that she sees in some notes that a decision has been made on my situation but she can't see what the decision was decided to be. OK wait! You make a decision, can't tell me what it is, never called the dealer to find out what they have to say because this is what YOU GM said YOU had to do first in order to make an informed decision, and then don't call me to tell me what it is. I left 4 messages and still no call back. GM you can forget me ever being a customer in the future, and for the local Avalanche club, I will make sure that all 28 members are aware too so that they aren't dissapointed too. Just horrible.

  • I just had a same problem out of no where. I was at a red light turned green and I accelerate, my rear end sounds like it spins out and i lose all gears drive 3 2 and 1 i did not try r. dealer has me paying 2822 .98 for a new transmission my 07 avalanche has 94,000 miles on it. the dealer said a new transmission come with a 300,000 3 yr warranty so I think its a good deal for me but I want to know what every one thinks
  • My 07 avalanche has not had much problems until recentlyin 2007 I had a 3000 dollar repair bill for struts belts another suspension problems. But thats in the past last night I was on my way to work and I was at a stoplight I was waiting for oncoming traffic to drive by the opportunity came so I could turn as I turned my rear end sounded like the tires spin out I wasn't drive and could not accelerate after that sound I could not accelerate in third gear second gear or first gear.so I had it towed to my local dealer whom I've always used for any of my repairs and the dealer told me that my transmission needed to be replaced and was going to cost 2822 dollars and 49 cents and to rebuild the transmission would be about the same cost with the new transmission I got a 300,000 mile warranty 3 year warranty my Chevy Avalanche has 94,000 miles on it it is an 07 LT model I bought the truck used the truck had 35,000 miles on it.I was reading some of the old posts and it seems like I'm getting a good deal but would like to know if this is true and is worth the money.
  • It's an OK deal if you plan on keeping the truck a while longer. I was able to get my trans rebuilt by my local (trusted!) mechanic for a little over 1/2 of what the dealer's asking...that included a 1 year warranty which was plenty of time to look for a replacement truck. Lucky that you got 94K out of it!

    I've never even heard of a 300,000 mile warranty on a class 8 truck/tractor or a motorcoach, let alone a pickup transmission. Please check with the dealer again on that mileage.

    I don't know if that is a deal. It seems like everyone has replaced the tranny.
    The dealer is making money. These chevys are not made ti last.
    I'll consider buying a toyota or Nissan.
  • Don't get me wrong. I love my 2007 Avalanche.
    But I wish that GM WILL LISTEN TO OUR PROBLEMS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT ...

  • Not that it should go out before 100,000 but at least you got 94,XXX our of your vehicle, ours did not even make it to 30,000 miles. We got the transmission replaced end of October and it doesn't matter who you contact, it is worthless they will not assist you. Too bad so sad your warrenty is up sorry we put a junk transmission in that model but now you still get to pay for it. They have the worst customer service and we have made it known to anyone that will listen. Right now as we go on the lot looking for a new car we still continue to inform people about our experience and we will not touch another Chevy for the very reason no car that was taken care of like ours, not used to tow and did not last us 30,000 miles without the most major expense of any of our vehicles and two are over 10 years old! Pathetic!

  • I have an 05 Chevy Avalanche now on the second tranny outage. Found a 4L60E at a good price that was going into an 01 Silverado and with shift kit, racing clutches (red stage)and stall convertor (2800 stall),corvette billet servos. I am being told this is a much more aggressive tranny and will not be anything like the stock one and eill be a totally different ride, but I wont have to worry about it going out. So my question is this a good call and what are the ups and downs if any??

    I have a 2005 Avalenche. I have read all the postings but none directly address my issue. With the 2 wheel button engaged, the transmission will work for a bit, then I loose all gears. If I select the Auto 4 wheel button, the transmission will work fine and has never slipped out of gear. Does anyone have a suggestion regarding what is going on? Thanks
