Still, if maintained zealously- if you use synthetic tranny fluid and change it often, the Axiom's 4L-30E transmission should last quite a while. Still, several Axiom owners have reported premature failures. (And should do so on the NHTSA website, so that a recall might actually take place.)
Some of the problem may be related to the the quality of the transmission (which is supposed to be quite good) and some to the confusion in the owner's manual about not having to change the fluid until the 120K mark, which differs from what is stated in the Axiom Technical Service Manual , which specifies that you should change the transmission fluid "Every 20,000 miles (32,000 km)".
The 2002 Axiom Service Manual goes on to say, "Under harsh operating conditions, such as constant driving in heavy city traffic during hot weather, or in hilly or mountainous terrain, change the transmission fluid and service the sump filter after every 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of operation. More over, the remaining life percentage of ATF can be estimated by using TECH–II as an auxiliary tool to judge the right time for ATF replacement. The remaining life percentage is calculated from ATF’S heat history. When it is close to 0%, ATF replacement is recommended."
I'll bet just about nobody does that, or even thought of it. Worse, there is no tranny dipstick, so you have to jack up the car and remove a plug to check the fluid level, and remove two plugs to change it - definitely not an easy DIY task.
What transmission problems have you experienced and what did you have to do to fix it?
. I'd like to know if anyone has tried changing their transmission fluid. I mean flush and refill. Please advise.
Closest thing I've seen to the Axiom is a same-year Lexus suv.
While your down there, do yourself and your tranny a favor and drop the pan, and replace the filter and fluid. did your seal blow because the trans got hot and the extra pressure on a hot soft seal blew it out. Could be telling you something. Heat is this trans enemy, and restricted oil flow is what makes 'em hot.
You may be able to save the trans if you act now. But, it might be too late.
So, today I visited Midas and they said that they need "Genuine Isuzu Transmission fluid." I checked online, but I did not find any such fluid. Will a regular ATF Dextron III work?
Also, I went to a former Isuzu dealership, and a mechanic there offered to drain my fluid for $99, but mechanic said that "a lot" of old fluid will stay in the transmission system. Please let me know if I should ask specific questions before I let him drain and refill my transmission fluid. And should I buy a new gasket/filter for my transmission. Will this one work? Duralast Transmission Filter/Gasket
Did you check the manual for the transmission fluid type?
Thank you
Also, if getting my money back doesn't work, i might need to replace the transmission, does anybody know if this transmission is compatible with any other make and model? thank you
Terri
I'm contemplating going to the dealer and having the tranny serviced ( drop and clean the pan add new filter and fluid) but I hate to waste $$ that could be going for a tranny replacement. That procedure is $265. I've been calling around and a new trans w/ labor is around $3200. It sounds like he did a half job as he should have done the aforementioned procedure to get all the old fluid etc....
She tried to start it yesterday....it produced only one loud click, but wouldn't start. I jiggled the automatic transmissions shifter a bit and it started for me. She went out today to start the car...same problem. Again I jiggled the shifter, and again the car started.
I suspect that there is an issue with the switch which only allows the car to start in "park"....as little else makes sense...the battery is fully charged, and the connections are clean and tight.
Any thoughts on how to locate this switch and test, adjust or fix this switch? Or does anyone else have a suggestion?
I just had the transmission rebuilt on my 2003 Axiom. The mechanic called and said it still will not shift down to first gear. It starts out in 2nd gear and will not shift to third. He says the transmission is not getting a signal from the computer to change gears. I bought a used computer and when he installed it the vehicle will not even start. Does anyone have any suggestions on resetting the computer or fixing the problem?
