I assume the music will be spot on... How about the rest of the show? Lighting effects, etc? I think this will be the closest he has been to a real rock concert (unless you count Trans-Siberian Orchestra).

    Thanks

Since the holidays are here, I thought it would be interesting to read others favorite holiday artists and albums.

    Heres are some of mine:

    1) The Jackson 5 Christmas Album. "Hey... what's wrong with you Jermaine?" "Leave him alone... he just broke up with his girl...can't you see there's tears in his eyes" "Ahhh, he's crying", "he's crying" .... (music starts) DON'T CRY, DON'T CRY, DON'T CRY !! "

    2) The Little Drummer Boy sung by Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

    3) Barbara Striesands Christmas Album

    4) Neil Diamonds Christmas Album

    5) Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer

    6) And everyones favorite from the Chipmonks, "Christmas Don't Be Late". ;)

Good call on Fogarty. I caught a concert on HD that was taped in '06, and he *rocked*. He can still hit all the notes in his songs, which is pretty good for a codger.

    Recent acquisitions:
Bryan Ferry, "Dylanesque" - an album of Dylan covers. His reading of "Positively 4th Street" is brilliant, and nothing at all like the original.
Robert Plant and Allison Krause, "Raising Sand". Produced by T-Bone Burnett.
Desmond Dekker, "Israelites" Great early Reggae hit
Gov't Mules live version of "Low Spark of High Heel Boys"
    New Pornographers - various cuts
Robyn Hitchcock, "I Often Dream of Trains"
St. Vincent - various cuts from "Marry Me"
Creedence - "Heard it Through the Grapevine"
Cortney Tidwell - "Eyes Are At The Billions"
Gryphon Trio - Shostakovich and Silvestrov

Other stuff that keeps coming back:
    DJ Shadow - "Endtroducing"
King Crimson - "Starless And Bible Black"
Brian Eno - "Before And After Science"
Joni MItchell - "Court And Spark"
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - "Streetcore"
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" and "Sketches of Spain"

Long drive to work; sometimes the right song can be just as satisfying as a craved food. Some songs that fit the mood at the moment, everchanging though.
    Feeling fragmented.....Plainsong (The Cure)
Feeling paranoid........The Light (Love and Rockets)
    Feeling aggressive..... Moanjam (King's X)
    Feeling nostalgic.......One Summer Dream (ELO)
Missing my mom....... I know love is all I need (Rodney Crowell)
Thinking of the wife.....Harvest Moon (Neil Young)
    Heading home and encountering
electic peach sunset...Approaching Pavonis Mons by Ballon (Flaming Lips)
    Feeling bittersweet....Movie Theme (Beck)
    Feeling happy..........Two of us (Beatles)
Psyching up for work..Anything by Infected Mushroom.

That Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss album is one unexpected gem. Being a big fan of Gene Clark (late of the original Byrds) I was very pleased to have nice covers of two of his songs on there (Polly Come Home and Through the Morning Through the Night).

There are a very few female singers who could sing the phone book and I'd still just melt and be putty in their hands. Alison tops the list, along with Emmylou Harris and Iris Dement.

Hey! On that list of songs for a particular mood I was pleased to see Rodney Crowell there. That CD - the Houston Kid is as good as it gets. Rodney started putting out the best music of his career at 50. I saw him at a 75 seat venue promoting that album. A real treat.

I was listening to a show called "Salsa Con Jazz" on our local jazz station, and they played an a capella version of "Hotel California", by a Cuban group called "Vocal Sampling." It's note perfect, including Walsh's guitar solo. As a singer myself, I have to say I'd give my eyeteeth to be involved in something like that. I just tracked it down on iTunes, and their's a video for it on youtube.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is booming away as I'm typing this, but the selection just before was oddly engaging. A Portland reviewer said “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by a possibly tranquilized Martina Sorbara is slow enough that you could teach it to a toddler. Dean Martin singing The Christmas Blues just before that was entertaining too.

Oops, where's the mute - the Chipmunks just came up singing Rudolph. Yikes!

For Christmas, I just added two Mike Doughty CDs and the newest Queensryche CD (along with an HD radio).

Queenryche album of covers ("Take Cover") is better than Def Leppard's similar album last year, and better than Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime II" which failed to live up to the power of the original.

The Mike Doughty CDs ("Skittish/Rockity Roll" and "Haughty Melodic") are often overlooked records. I got into Mike Doughty because I really enjoyed his band Soul Coughing, but these discs are nothing like that type of music. It's more acoustic, less jazzy and more folky. Still alternative rock enough to entertain me, though.

They're both still around, eh? I used to listed to Deff Leppard in high school and my roommate was a huge Q fan, even going to their local concerts before they made it big.

I've been a big Def Leppard and Queenryche fan since well before either were well known. I haven't heard a good Def Leppard CD since "Slang" eleven years ago(!) and "Take Cover" is the best Queensryche CD since "Hear in the Now Frontier" ten years ago. "Operation: Mindcrime II" had a few good songs on it but I couldn't get the local rock station to play any of them. That's about the time I gave up on local radio.

Relaxing at home after an ugly car accident with no casualties, I am re-listening to Paul Simon's Negotiations and Love Songs (1971-1986). I could not say which ones I like the most: the melodies or the lyrics. Or the Steve Gadd´s drums!

My office IT department has asked us not to stream music, so I've been loading my computer with music from home. Today's add was "Stars - Hear 'n Aid." Anyone know this one? Yesterday's was "Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell."

The band at one of the bowl games was playing Stairway to Heaven.. I think it was the Fiesta Bowl, a couple of days ago..

Stairway to Heaven is actually a quite sedate song... not exactly what I'd term Heavy Metal... though there is a great guitar solo...

When I was in high school (Paleozoic Era), we considered it the greatest rock-n-roll song, ever...

Does anyone like Richard Thompson? I just got the "Sweet Warrior" album and thought his song-writing and guitar work is as good as ever. He's back to electric, too. Anyway people are raving on Amazon about it, for what that's worth. His fans are pretty hard core types.

In my play list now is it a rare bird: Concha Buika, not exactly a flamenco singer tough undoubtedly rooted in flamenco tradition. She is a woman of African ancestry. Yet she was born and raised in Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain link title) within a gypsy neighborhood. She was encouraged to be a professional singer by Path Metheny. Three releases till now, the last one being 'Mi Niña Lola' link title . She is getting credit over here. (She spent a time singing in Las Vegas to make a living, by the way.) I write below some more links for those interested in her songs.

Same here; right now I'm working through Amy Winehouse's 1st CD (issued in the UK before the Rehab CD, or so I've been told). I'll give it a closer listen in my portable CD player this weekend laying in the sun (with plenty of sun block, of course!)

I bought her Rehab CD based on all types of glowing written reviews; that CD did not disappoint. I can see why it won her 5 grammy awards. She's just got that "it" factor when it comes to music--she writes a lot of her own stuff and she has a very distinctive and pleasing voice to my ears. Of course, we won't get into all her other trials and tribulations. :shades:

I'm not a fan of random shuffling between CDs; if I'm in the mood for a particular artist, I want to listen to the entire CD, but that's just my preference.

Sad that so much talent often comes with so much drama in the personal life of these artists.

    bryanbryan Member Posts: 198
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I wrote that. Another talent with issues that comes to mind is George Michael; what a voice! What is it with these singers who "smoke"--doesn't that end up messing up your instrument?

This year I got into watching American Idol, and was truly impressed with the "gift" several of those young folks have. I began rooting for the guy who ended up winning very early on, when during one of the vignettes they do about each, he revealed himself to be quite a normal fellow. Talked about his crossword puzzle "addiction" to reduce his stress. How grounded and mature he seemed compared to most of the rest. He's another one with enormous potential, and I think he'll make it just fine.

I'm not a fan of random shuffling between CDs

Funny how that works (I had this discussion 30 years ago with a friend who plunks a guitar and is more into music than I am). I've always gone for the song, and sitting through albums bores me. With a few exceptions of course.

Give me a hour of one hit wonders any day instead of a 8 B-side tunes.

What I will do is get on a narrowly focused net radio channel and listen to that all day, even if the short playlist repeats every hour.

My local Top 40 station has Sting in the rotation lately and I finally got around to looking up the lyrics to the song (Fields Of Gold) they've been playing. Had trouble finding "on the fields of Bali lyrics" with my search engine.

I guess Bali has more beaches than fields....

"You'll remember me when the west wind moves
    Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold"

Yesterday night we went to a live concert of The Police. The concert started with 'Message in a bottle' and then came 'Walking on the moon', 'Every Breath You Take', and so on. You can imagine. Nostalgy filled the place, with every attendant singing every song. It was like a massive karaoke. But Sting and his band delivered plenty of music. We all had a great time.

The program for today and tomorrow (Bilbao Live Festival) includes R.E.M., Lenny Kravtiz and Tequila, among others, but our family choice was that of yesterday. :shades:

Yeah, there is plenty of live pop-rock-jazz live festivals over here around the year. Amy Winehouse was singing in Madrid yesterday. Last monday I couldn't go to a Bob Dylan's concert near to my place.

Sounds great. I bet that was quite a show.

Reminds me, James Taylor was in Brazil and he could not believe how many people sang along. They knew all the words to his songs.

I guess good music can overcome any language barrier. :shades:
