Bought brand new in 07 and for the first couple years after I bought it every now and then it would not start. When I turned the key all the dash lights, chime, and dome light came on but it would not turn over. I'd turn the key to off and try again and it would start. For the last couple years it has been progressively getting more frequent. Also, I have to keep trying to start it, over and over until it finally turns over. Most of the time it takes about 20 minutes or so til I finally get it started. Last week it would not start for 3 days. Tow truck driver came to take it to the shop, got in it, turned the key and it started! I have had it in the shop several times, diagnostics ran several times at 100.- a pop, no error codes! The time before this last time, they wiped and reflashed the whole system but not the keys. It almost seems like the anti theft system does not recognize the keys when it does not want to start. I mentioned this to the advisor but it was more or less just disregarded. I asked the advisor at the shop if he has any suggestions. He said: "Pray real hard!"
The truck has been starting fine all this week. The starting issue is not related to outside temperature or dry or rainy weather. It is almost like playing russian roulette. I have been checking on the internet and many people seem to have the same issue, but I have not found any solutions to this problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions? :confuse:

I had a problem that was intermittent and replaced the diesel shut of solenoid and found out later it was only a cheap relay now i travel with a spare one always . The solenoid has a powerful electric magnet with 2 parts, The first part is the most powerful and pulls the lever up which allows the diesel to flow ,this happens when you are cranking the engine . The second part maintains this lever open and is less powerful. The relay is located on the firewall and is easy to change . If you are stuck somewhere though you can try turning the ignition to on but dont crank it and locating where the plunger is and pulling it up .if the lower current is working it you will here it click and it will hold it open. Then get in the vehicle and try cranking it ,it will start right away if this is your problem.I use mine in Costa Rica where there is no help.

i also own a 1995 ram 2500 4x4 and I was driving and then outta nowhere the damn thing shut down, was running great, then just decided "you know what would be a nice thing to do? shut down as You are driving up hill to Big Bear.", this was weeks ago now and I called the friend I bought it off and he said it would do it to him but just give it a while, so I did, then a while longer, now I have replaced the cap, rotor, pick up, alternator next is the ecu, and the cps, i wish i would have bought a tundra or an old t-100, this truck is an electrical nightmare. ??????DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT IT IS???????

Check your coolant level if it's low it will cause shut down
  • beavercleaverbeavercleaver Member Posts: 7
This was crankshaft position sensor. replaced works fine now.
I also had a stalling problem that was caused by low coolant there is a low level sensor ;)

wel to start off i have a 94 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.2 ltr with an automatic 4 speed transmission well it all started i had to rebuild the transmission so i get that all done i get it in and bolt it all back in etc well i started it and it ran rough well i pinched the wires to the crank position senors so i replace that and it fired up and idled fine for roughly about 30 seconds and it dided instantly after a big clunk sound like it was in the back portion of the engine well my buddies and i thought well maybe it was the timing chain broke and got lodge to where it wouldnt turn over well we replaced that and the gaskets for it and the oil pan well i checked the connecting rods and valves and they were all fine well i can tunr the engine by the flywheel counter clockwise and it turns over so far then it stops then i can turn it clockwise and it would turn with no problem then stop again and the starter wont turn it over it just clicks not like a dead battery though does anyone have any thoughts because my brain is starting to fry after messing with this

    Hi,

98 Ram 1500 5.2 very slow crank on hot starts, cold starts fine. Measures 12.5V across battery terminals. 14V on dash gauge, if running. Can you please tell me how to troubleshoot this issue.

    Thanks,
    Ken

So how do you isolate that it's the ECU? I have an electrical problem (no spark) and don't even know where to start? Are there common electrical components that fail on the Ram Vans? (got a '97 3500).

    See attached URL.

    http://ifar.ca/support/vehicles/40-tsb_(08-007-08)_-_2006-2008_chrysler_wcm_no_start.html

Deals with the WCM and eletrostatic problem. I have 08 Dodge 3500 Diesel. Bought used at 48K, currently has 74K. Have had new key plus WCM replaced once at about 60K. AFter many many months of checking [qualified] sources, all I'd come up with is that my vehicle, because the security system was factory installed, it can't be removed or bypassed.

Truck currently has same problem and is currently at same Chrysler dealer wo did initial repair. I got the above URL tech bulletin info from an on-line Dodge specialist. He suggested if dealer can't/won't help, call Chrysler Customer Service. I'm currently in contact with them on my issue. No outcome as of yet.

I have a 2004 2500 hemi that has starting problems only when it's -10C or colder. Upon starting, the idle will fluctuate wildly up & down and finally stall out. Often it smells of raw fuel at both the exhaust and near the driver's door areas when this occurs. This happened last winter as well. The mechanics changed the spark plugs, the O2 sensors and wiring harness, cleaned the injectors & throtle body, checked the compression, and replaced several sensors. The starting funky idle & stall sequence occures two or three times before the truck starts normally with a steady idle. Help!

Sounds like the starter is heat soaking. Do you still have the stock exhaust, or aftermarket? If it's aftermarket, like a set of headers, they will sometimes be too close to the starter & heats it up. A heat shield such as aluminum wrap on the starter housing should take care of it.

Did you ever figure out why it wouldn't start? I have an 01 gas 5.7 and it won't start in wet weather and I have replaced the coil, wire, cap and rotor.

On rainy humid days my 01 5.7 L wont start and I have replaced the coil, wires, cap and rotor. It will start right up and run fine when it dries.

I have a 2008 dodge ram 2500, 6.7 cummins. It recently had the entire rear-end replaced on it due to a major accident. We got the truck back about a month ago from the repair shops, up until thursday this past week (11/8/12) the truck has been running fine, just as before the accident. I drove the truck all day on thursday hauling horses around here and there, then on my way home I noticed that the "check engine" light turned on. Upon arrival at home I backed into the usual parking place, realized that i had backed too far so walked back to the cab of the pick up and tried to start the truck.... "click click click, click, click...nothing" the engine didn't make any attempt to turn over. I had all the dash lights, battery was reading normal, and I had JUST BEEN DRIVING IT 2 MINUTES PRIOR to this event. Now, 3 days later, still can't get the truck started.... any ideas of what is going on? We have the truck being towed on Monday back to the repair shop that did the initial repairs from the accident. Has anyone had issues such as this before? Do you think it has anything to do with a short in the system, possibly from the repairs? Any ideas? Thanks

I have a 2008 1500 dodge ram with the exact same starting problem as you. I have taken it to two different dealers who cant seem to figure out the problem. I have done a throttle body cleaning and also replaced 4 different 02 sensors but nothing seems to fix the problem. It only happens when its really cold outside, when its warmer or I park in the garage the starting problem goes away. Have you had any luck in figuring out whats wrong with your? This is driving me crazy!

My battery is good and when I turn the key it clicks one time and then nothing. Mine is a v10
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
Click-and-nothing is usually a dead starter if all the other electricals (battery, alternator, cables) test ok.

Sounds like you have dirty or corroded/caliumed up battery terminals. Also check the two cable mounts to the power distribution center (fuse/relay box) under the hood. I have a 97 2500 4x4 ext. cab long box with the V10 I drive daily and the same thing happens to me when my battery terminals need cleaning.

    Hope it helps.

I had a '93 and had to bleed the air out of the the system at each injector when I ran out of fuel. I'm guessing that it will compress the air and the fuel will return to the tank without popping the injector off into the cylinder if you don't bleed it there. Hope this helps

A few days ago I drove my truck around running errands came home parked. That night it dipped to around -30° didn’t have to leave so I stayed home, 3 days later went to start it to leave all it does is crank and tries to fire but nothing. I haven’t checked out anything but a couple of fuses and relays and put fuel dryer in it thinking maybe water in tank. Yesterday it up to 40 briefly but dropped again. Still no starting just cranking. Any suggestions? It’s ran fine with no problems up until now! Is there vacuum lines for fuel? Etc? Thanks
