I wonder if California residents can buy the warranty out of state, for example, from Troy @ Toyota of Greenfield in MA. If you go to http://www.bernardiwarranty.com/Departments/Toyota-Extra-Care.aspx for a quote in CA, you'll get an error message: "Sorry - the states of Califonia and Florida require you to purchase warranty agreements from an in-state dealer"
  • mforermforer Member Posts: 3
Can you further explain in detail your reply and in particular, about the "error message." I need futher clarification and detail, please; the more the better.

I will be buying a Toyota auto soon and plan on buying a Toyota extended car warranty from a dealer in another state....because the prices are better and it's for the same product. I already checked.
  • bchen_binbchen_bin Member Posts: 2
If you go to that link and input some car info for a quote in CA, you'll see the message. I just checked with a dealer from another state, and was told that If you are in CA, you can buy from out-state dealers as long as the transaction is NOT processed via internet (fax or mail is fine). That's what I learned. Don't blame me if anything goes wrong :-)

My wife and I went to a local Toyota dealer in California to inquire about Extended Warranty for our 06 Highlander Hybrid. We were given a quote of $1795 for the Platinum Package, 7 years/75,000 miles with zero deductible. When we balked at the quote, we were then told that since the vehicle is nearing 36 months, “you have only a few days to wrap this up.” When we were about to leave, the Finance Manager picked up his phone and supposedly called his supervisor. I said “supposedly” because he began talking far too soon after dialing. His boss must have been just waiting for the call, and grabbed his phone in a flash! After the lightning “conversation,” the manager said his boss had approved a discount – we could get the same coverage for $1595. The new quote was $200 less, and the dealer was not making any money, but “we’re doing it for our customers”.

I began searching the internet. Lo and behold, quotes that are more reasonable began appearing. The internet is a great equalizer. It allows car owners to check locally, state-wide and nation-wide.

The Internet Extended Warranty Manager at Molle Toyota came through with the most reasonable quote of $645. He beats the next two lowest quotes by $5 and $10, and he beats the highest quote by $1150. There are definitely sharks out there. Let the buyer beware. If you don’t watch out, you can really get conned, and ripped off big time.

If you are not sure which warranty plan to choose, go to:
    http://www.toyotafinancial.com/consumer/tfs.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pg_NewV- ehicleProtectionPlan

then select Protection Plan Comparison Chart to view the different plans available.

If you emailed Molle Toyota, you will get a reply with a quote, including a scanned (pdf) copy of the paperwork for you to review. If it looks good, call with your credit card. You may be put on hold, as the call is transferred. Part of the recorded message at Molle Toyota says: “if you don’t buy from Molle, you’ll pay too much.” Based on my experience, this is very true!

Molle Toyota is in Kansas City, MO.

I want to share this info with everyone on this forum!

    I was quoted $860 for 7yr/ 100,000,/ 0 deduct,Platinum plan, What plan were you quoted for $645 ?
  • highlanderhybhighlanderhyb Member Posts: 6
Mine was only $645 for the Platinum Plan for 7/75 with zero deductible. We have more than one vehicle, and we don't put that many miles on the Highlander Hybrid, so we feel that 75,000 miles would be adequate - that's how we selected the 75 plan instead of the 100K.

Hi - I am researching whether this platinum plan is really worth getting on my new highlander. I haven't closed the deal at the dealership on the new car, but they really want to sell it to us.

My question is, can I purchase this warranty at a later date? I believe my dealer said I could, but that it would be more expensive. True?

The quote given was $1350 for 7yrs/75k miles or $1650 for 7yrs/100k miles. As I research what others have posted on this board, I see the dealer is getting a high profit margin. Is this just another tactic for the dealer to squeeze more money out of you?
  • karen mariekaren marie Member Posts: 1
I have been struggling with both of these, together they cost an extra 2800.00.
Yes I was pressured into them. I have been doing research and asking mechanics what they think. Most say get rid of em and put money in the bank. These plans are ways for the finance depts to make a profit off of us by trying to scare us into thinking something "bad" is going to happen but they will be there for us. HA!
What do u think out there?
  • highlanderhybhighlanderhyb Member Posts: 6
I posted my experience in Sept of 2008, Message #59 (just 5 messages before yours).

Since then, I have received a few emails sharing similar experiences. It is clear that some dealers are using this trick to con us in spending more money, by trying to scare us. Recently, I accompanied a friend when he went in to buy a Tacoma truck. Based on price searches done on the internet, the dealer did give him a good price. Sure enough, he was "encouraged" to protect his investment with an extended warranty. I saved my friend over $1600 by buying from an out-of-state dealer. It's the same warranty - just from another Toyota dealer from another state.

I did not buy GAP insurance, just the Extended Warranty.

It makes me mad that these sharks are out there taking advantage of their customers.

Hartford Toyota offers $975 for Pt 7yrs/75k miles for my 08' HL Limited. It appears that they still have some margin in this quotes.

Thank you very much, EandHo. The prices on the web site are cheaper than those quoted by the dealer. Have you dealt with them before? Can you trust them?

I have not dealt with them before. I've read about them on several Edmund's forums. They have several dealerships in the Boston area (Toyota, Acura, Honda, Audi). All of the posts I've read said they are legit and offer the same manufacturer warranty that we can buy from our local dealer. They have taken advantage of the internet and automated the purchase process. Make their money on volume rather than crazy dealer mark up. I just purchased an '08 Highlander Sport. Bernardi's prices beat my local dealer by over $200. I plan on purchasing a Platinum plan from them tomorrow.

Hope this info helps. You can also read some threads about them over on the Acura MDX forum (my other choice in a new car). Good luck to you.

I got four quotes on a 6-year/75,000 miles Platinum Extended Care warranty on my 2006 4wd Toyota Highlander. The highest was $910 plus tax from a Connecticut dealer. Toyota of Greenfield was $615. Bernardi was $585. The best deal: Midwest Superstore at $474. The whole thing took less than 5 minutes.

I just purchased an extended warranty from Midwest Superstore, Hutchinson KS,for my 2008 FWD Highlander Sport and my wifes FWD 2009 Rav4 Limited. The price was $644.00 for 6yr-100,000, -0- deductible, for each vehicle. The quote for the 7-100-0 was $789.00.

    Hi all,
I bought a brand-new 08' Limited Hybrid in 02/09. The dealer offered me an extended warranty. I declined because I wanted to shop around for it. I have been busy and forgotten all about it. Does any of you know if I still can purchase one for my car? My car has only 7k miles on it.
    Thanks,
    John
  • highlanderhybhighlanderhyb Member Posts: 6
Yes - unless the rules have changed. We bought an 06 Highlander Hybrid. Almost 3 years later, and at slightly over 35,000 miles, we bought an Extended Warranty, and it was good. My experience dealing with scare tactics and high-pressure sales is listed on this forum. Good luck.

You have until your vehicle reaches the 30,000 /3yr part of your warranty to buy the Toyota Platinum Plus Extended Warranty. My dealer tried to rip me for $1600.00 and I bought mine from Midwest Superstore, Hutchinson KS. My 2008 FWD Highlander and my wifes 2009 FWD Rav4 was $664.00 ea, for the 6yr/100,000 mi./0 deductible. If you have AWD it will probably be a little more ,but I guarantee ,you won't find it less expensive anywhere else. This is the same Toyota warranty your dealer tried to sell you and it will come right from Toyota .
  • smooth01smooth01 Member Posts: 18
Cancel !! and call Midwest Superstore Hutchinson KS.Yuo won't find a better price and it will be a Toyota Platinum Plus, right from Toyota.

To limit the number of shill-type bird-dogging posts around the site, we ask that you not post names of names of salespeople, telephone numbers, email addresses, or other contact information.

Dealer names, locations, URLs, etc. are fine.

    Thanks!

Recently I purchased a Toyota Platinum 75000/8yr warranty for my 2007 Avalon from Midwest Superstore at Hutchinson Kansas. The price of $744 was $1000 less than what my NY Toyota dealer charged for a 75000/7yr warranty. The service was friendly, honest and efficient and I received my Warranty documentation directly from Toyota within 2 weeks of buying the contract. IF YOU NEED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR YOUR TOYOTA, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DEALER. ;););):D

Is is true that you may not purchase Toyota Protection Plans for vehicles in North Carolina? Or is it just that you cannot purchase them IN North Carolina but they are applicable in NC?
  • firstacurafirstacura Member Posts: 12
Can you get extended warranty from Midwest on the phone or the internet? Or do you physically have to be there?
Sorry am not familiar with getting warranty from anyone else except the dealer I bought the car from. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I do not remember where I was going to buy the Platinum warranty, but I found it online and it was somewhere in the midwest. And A LOT less expensive than what my dealer (in NoCal) had offered. I had about 34,000 miles on our '03 HL at the time, and was satisfied enough with the vehicle that I knew we'd be keeping it.

I called our dealer and asked if they would match the price. At first, "no" and "you can't buy it with that many miles on the car". Later they called back.

"Yes we can match the price" and "yes you can buy it as long as the car is less than 36,000 miles and less than 36 months".

We bought it, and also for a couple of hundred more, an addition that IF we didn't use the warranty before 100,000 miles or 7 years, we'd get the entire price of the warranty (including the addition) back.

Last month we got our entire Platinum purchase price (plus the addition) back. The only "catch" was that there was a narrow window of opportunity to apply for the refund. We had notes on calendars, notes reminding us in email, etc. I was skeptical, but it was legit and we got the money back. The "warranty refund" was through NADA. It took a month for our dealer to process it and have the check for us.

Of course, we've had NO warranty work done, and currently have 105,000 miles. I was concerned about the "what if" I needed a warranty job done of $750.... that would cancel the refund of ~$1300. The situation never happened so it was a needless worry.

I must concur on Midwest Toyota in Hutchinson KS. Just purchased about 12 minutes ago a 7/75K and was by far the best price on the net. Not to mention outstanding customer service and follow up. Jerry Rocks!

When I purchased my Highlander from Royal Palm in Florida in October it came with a lifetime powertrane warranty. It covers everything for the original owner as long as the work is done by a certified mechanic. There is a deductable of $25 per visit. This was something that Penske, the dealer was doing at the time. What does the platinum cover? Ofcourse it will be awhile before I need to use this and hopefully never will.

    Good luck to all

Unless you're getting a smash up deal. Our dealership sales person tried to make it sound like he swung us a great deal on an extended warranty of 7 years/100k miles (Platinum Coverage) on a new (less than 20 miles) 2010 Highlander Limited and basically worked in another $2,000 cost into our payment plan. Thank God for these forums cause I was going to just go through with it.

Some people suggested purchasing from the Superstore in Kansas. I called and they offered the identical Toyota Platinum Coverage for $810. What a wonderful little profit margin our dealership would have gotten on that. I'm definitely going to cancel it. Plus, I have 3 years and 36k miles to go before having to secure the coverage. I'm really disappointed in those sales and scare tactics they used and pressure point to buy and sign on the spot for the coverage. I guess I'm not the only customer who's experienced this as it looks like many other dealerships do the same exact thing, mark up the price and scare the customer into buying it.

Thanks to all who posted about the Superstore in Kansas. I will be purchasing my coverage through them!

Is it safe to purchase a extended warranty from out of state toyota dealer, if I live in WV, DC, MD or VA then can I buy a platinum warranty from out of state toyota's dealer? Will the coverage remain same and acceptable anywhere in USA? Please let me know. Thanks.

Is it possible to cancel and get a refund on an extended warranty bought from the local dealer and then get a cheaper one from elsewhere? How does one go about doing that?
    Thanks.
  • smooth01smooth01 Member Posts: 18
Yes it is perfectly all right. I purchased mine from Midwest Superstore in Hutchinson Kansas, They are a Ford -Lincoln Toyota Dealer. I purchased the same Platinum plan from them that my local dealer was selling for TOYOTA for minimum half the price. I was told they sell these for only $75.00 over dealer cost. After a week to 10 day's you will recieve your warranty paperwork directly from Toyota. The transaction was simple. They were friendly and explained the process in a simple way.

I also purchased my Toyota Extra Care Platinum warranty with zero deductible from Jerry at the Midwest Superstore in Hutchinson, KS. I am in NY and had done quite a bit of searching around the local dealerships and on the phone calling out of state dealers as well. I called Midwest and their price was by far the cheapest. The process was easy and all done over the phone. I have a 2008 Toyota Camry which I purchased new in October of 2007. I got the 8 year/100,000 miles platinum warranty with $0 deductible for $1,039. Yippee! I highly recommend Jerry, he is very pleasant and informative. He made the whole process very easy!

Unfortunately I purchased a 8yr/125K miles with 0 Deductible from a Dealer last week for $ 1900. Can I cancel and get a Full Refund? If I can do that, I can purchase from this Midwest Dealer that this thread has recommended very highly.

    Cheers,
    Neil
  • smooth01smooth01 Member Posts: 18
YES ! You either have a certain time frame to cancel or at worst case, prorated.I believe you might have 30 day's for full refund but I wouldn't be quoted on that.

The other wrinkle is that you may not be able to buy a replacement Toyota extended warranty if you cancel the current one. Honda has (or had) this policy but I don't know about Toyota.
  • teddybearneilteddybearneil Member Posts: 15
Both of you are correct. I did cancel and we do have 30 days to get a full refund and after that a prorated refund. I checked with Jerry and he said that Toyota does not have that restrictive clause about not being able to buy a replacement Warranty if we cancel the current one. So I went ahead and cancelled with the current dealer and Jerry quoted $ 1400 for the same Warranty! So, that is a straight savings of $ 500 that ima gonna use to buy myself a high end Escort Passport Radar Speed Detector!!

The Toyota extended warranty is a RIP OFF - and TOYOTA SUCKS. We purchased the same 100,000 mile extended warranty for our 2006 Sienna van for about $1500. The sliding door failed a year ago and the warranty claim was denied. It took many many many hours of fighting the warranty claim and finally we were able to get half the cost covered. Last week the van chugged to a halt 80 miles from town - I had it towed the 80 miles to the Toyota dealer, where upon they told us we had to pay $1100 to have the engine dismantled so the Toyota Investigator could determine the cause of the failure. It turned out the head gasket had blown. The customer service person at the dealership assured us this was covered by the warranty and was not a result of anything done by the drivers. The head mechanic assured us of the same. The service manager assured us of the same. The investigator assured us of the same. We received the call this afternoon from the warranty claim center saying our claim was denied.

Tomorrow we begin the uphill battle of getting our due and getting the engine (replacement is the only option) covered. Frankly it is BS. If you own stock in TOYOTA - sell, sell, sell. I will never buy a TOYOTA and you should not either. TOYOTA SUCKS!

I purchased this warranty 3 1/2 years ago for my Sienna and Camry Hybrid. I think it was the best choice and have found it invaluable. My Sienna had a sensor problem at 60,000 miles that was $750 to fix and the Toyota dealer took care of it and it cost me nothing. Now i am selling my Camry Hyrbid and having that 7yr/100,000 zero deductible warranty is an incredible selling point making the car more valuable and much easier to sell. Fidelity is owned by JM Family who is the Toyota distributor for the southeastern US and is an incredibly reputable company. You couldn't ask for better security and customer service than these guys. I purchased a warranty from an internet company 6 years ago for another vehicle and they went out of business and i am out the $1400 I paid for it. That was very frustrating and I didn't want to take any chances again. Last point is that if you don't use this warranty you get your money back at the end of the contract. To me this is a no brainer worth while deal with nothing but upside whether you use it or not and a great asset when you go to sell your car
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Such effusive praise makes me think you are selling cars down in Florida yourself.

Southeast Toyota has quite the reputation alright. For padding the cost of new Toyotas.

Why does Edmunds' pricing for Toyota vehicles differ from pricing at my local Toyota dealer?
  • luckysevenluckyseven Member Posts: 134
Can you verify if you have Toyota extra care warranty or you have something different? Why was your claim denied?
  • teddybearneilteddybearneil Member Posts: 15
Dunno what kinda warranty you purchased, it could be an Aftermarket warranty, not from Toyota itself. You shoulda been browsing this thread before you purchased that warranty on the internet as u claim to have done. Better late than never...

Thank you Lucky777, "MIDWESTSUPERSTORE" is the real deal. Their Toyota care price is 35% less than where I bought my 2011 Toyota van from. Thank you again......
